In this work, we prepared a series of bio-based poly(butylene adipate- co -furandicarboxylate) (PBAF) copolyesters with BF segments ranging from 20 to 80 mol% through a two-step polycondensation. Then, their thermal, mechanical, gas barrier, and degradable properties were investigated. With the increase of BF content, the glass transition temperatures ( T g ) and melting temperatures ( T m ) of PBAFs increase constantly. Besides, PBAF copolyesters exhibit excellent mechanical performance with elongation at break in the range of 140% to 870%. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of PBAF60 are 138 and 17 MPa respectively, which are comparable to those of commercial poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT). Moreover, thanks to the structural characteristics of the furan ring, the barrier performances against CO 2 , O 2 , and H 2 O of PBAFs are 4.6–147.5 folds, 4.0–76.0 folds, and 0.8–8.7 folds of PBAT, respectively. Finally, the degradation tests reveal that the weight losses of PBAFs increase with decreasing BF contents. It is worth emphasizing that although the compost degradation rate of PBAF60 is slightly lower than that of PBAT, it is still a prospective alternative to PBAT due to its improved barrier properties. And it provides a possibility for applications in food packaging, mulch films, and structural elements.

Nitrogen (N)-doped microporous hollow carbon spheres were prepared by facilely nanocasting spherical SiO 2 with N-containing melamine phenolic resin through a simple in-situ polymerization process. Through regulating the dosage of melamine, N content in microporous hollow carbons could be easily tuned to an unprecedented level of 49.2 wt%. Additionally, in order to address the common problem of relatively poor structural porosity of N-doped carbons, especially after incorporating vast N into carbon frameworks in reported literature, a comprehensive strategy including optimizing carbonization temperature and performing further activation by CO 2 and KOH were explored, and their effects on material textural properties and CO 2 capacity were systematically studied. Although this strategy did not completely avoid the N loss during activation of carbon materials, it sharply promoted the textural properties of carbon materials at the expenses of partial N and efficiently produced a series of highly microporous carbon materials, still with abundant N species (11.5 ∼ 29.9 wt%) and large structural porosity (330 ∼ 1263 m 2 /g). More importantly, these N-doped microporous hollow carbons, when used for CO 2 capture, showed superior CO 2 capacities of 3.00 mmol/g (25 °C and 1 bar) and 1.05 mmol/g (40 °C and 0.1 bar), exceptionally robust cyclic stability, and low regeneration energy of 2.75 GJ/ton CO 2 , which is much lower than aqueous amine-based absorbents and comparable to amine-supported adsorbents. Thus, these outstanding adsorption performances make the N-doped microporous hollow carbon spheres prepared in this study more promising for energy-effective CO 2 capture from dilute gas streams.

Adsorption sites play an essential role in gas separation. We introduce N-oxide groups into MOFs to investigate the binding interactions between N-oxide groups and light saturated hydrocarbons for the first time. MOF-808-INO with N-oxide groups shows great performance to separate the mixture of methane, ethane and propane. Remarkably, MOF-808-INO exhibits a very low heat of adsorption of propane, which is important for pre-activation. The cycling experiments reveal that subsequent activation is only required at room temperature with nitrogen purging for several hours, indicating that MOF-808-INO has immense potential applications for recycled materials.

The gas sensing mechanism of metal oxides has always been the research focus in the field of gas sensors. Herein, a novel gas sensing mechanism based on the active edge effect was proposed to account for the difference in gas sensing performance between pothole-rich WO 3 and non-porous WO 3 nanosheets . The gas sensor based on pothole-rich WO 3 exhibited a higher response (9.5) than non-porous WO 3 (6.8) when exposed to 500 ppb C 2 H 6 S 3 , which could be ascribed to the active edge sites on the pothole-rich WO 3 nanosheets. DFT calculations and XPS confirmed that the edge sites showed higher adsorption energy and more charge transfer for C 2 H 6 S 3 gas, and W-S bond was formed at the edge site due to the strong chemical adsorption .

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity have attracted comprehensive attention in membrane-mediated gas separation because of their rigid and contorted structure that facilitates well-defined microporosity for fast and selective gas transport. We report a new macromolecular design synthesizes semi-ladder and fully-ladder polymers of intrinsic microporosity containing 9H -xanthene units by superacid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts polymerization named SACPs. The prepared SACP membranes display high microporosity with amorphous chain packing structure, high FFV, and high BET surfaces areas. In particular, SACP-3 exhibited the most elevated BET surfaces area of 568 m 2 /g, fractional free volume (FFV) of 0.243, and bimodal micropore size distribution with two maxima at ∼5 and ∼8 Å, respectively. Due to its fully ladder architecture, SACP-3 exhibits highly permeable gas transport with CO 2 permeability of 6497 Barrer and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 7.8, respectively. The microporosity and gas permeation properties of SACP membranes are also demonstrated to be highly tailorable by employing different monomers . The facile polymerization procedure, excellent solubility and processability, highly diverse tunability, and outstanding gas separation performance render SACP membranes attractive for many membrane-mediated gas separation processes.

As hydraulic fracturing (HF) practices keep expanding in China, a comparative understanding of biological characteristics of flowback and produced waters (FPW) and sludge in impoundments for FPW reserve will help propose appropriate treatment strategies. Therefore, in this study, the microbial communities and functions in impoundments that collected wastewaters from dozens of wells were characterized. The results showed that microbial richness and diversity were significantly increased in sludge compared with those in FPW. The vast majority of microorganisms found in FPW and sludge are organic degraders, providing the possibility of using these indigenous microorganisms to biodegrade organic compounds. Our laboratory findings first show that wastewater pretreatment using these microorganisms was effective, and organic compounds in FPW from different shale formations were removed by 35–68% within 72 h in a wide temperature range (8 – 30 ℃). Meanwhile, highly toxic compounds such as phthalate esters (PAEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and petroleum hydrocarbons were effectively eliminated in reactors. The main microorganisms, key functional genes, and putative pathways for alkanes, PAHs, and PAEs degradation were also identified.

Superacid-catalyzed polymers of intrinsic microporosity have attracted increasing attention in membrane-mediated gas separation due to their good processability, facile polymerization procedure, and tunable microporosity and gas separation performance. In this study, we synthesized a series of new superacid-catalyzed polymers with fully ladder backbones and well-defined micropores using a one-pot condensation polymerization. The incorporation of a contorted spirobisindane building block facilitated the formation of highly microporous structures in the resulting polymers, enhancing their intrinsic microporosity and gas separation properties. Among the three SACPs, SACP-PhMe exhibited the largest d-spacing value, specific surface area, and pore volume due to its bulkiest side group. The gas separation performance of the SACP membranes surpassed several benchmark polymer membranes, with the SACP-PhMe membrane demonstrating excellent performance in separating CO2/CH4, H2/CH4, O2/N2, and H2/N2. The SACP-Me membrane exhibited the lowest porosity, making it less susceptible to CO2 absorption and showing superior plasticization resistance. The results highlight the promising gas separation properties of the SACPs and their potential for various gas separation applications, offering new opportunities for advanced polymer membrane design.

The novel copper hydroxyfluoride-copper oxide (CHFCO)/zinc hydroxyfluoride-zinc oxide (ZHFZO) nanomaterials were prepared by hydrothermal method and exhibited superior sensing performance for methamphetamine analogue-phenethylamine. The sensing characteristics of calcined ZHFZO rods, CHFCO flakes, and four composite nanomaterial ratios were examined. The experimental results demonstrated that the CHFCO/ZHFZO-2 sensor exhibited improved sensing performance for phenethylamine, with the optimum working temperature reduced to 200 ℃. The responses of the ZHFZO and CHFCO sensors to 10 ppm phenylethylamine were 1.9 and 3.5, respectively, while the response of the CHFCO/ZHFZO-2 sensor was enhanced to 5. With a response time (T res ) and recovery time (T rec ) of 30 s for 10 ppm phenylethylamine, the sensor enables rapid detection. It has great selectivity and reproducibility for phenylethylamine and can detect concentrations as low as 125 ppb, demonstrating its potential for quantitative detection at the parts per billion (ppb) level. The prepared composites possessed unique nanostructures and large specific surface areas . The substitution of fluoride ions produces a large electronegativity and the physical adsorption of polar hydroxyl bonds combine to enhance the sensitization of phenylethylamine gas. The findings presented in this study underscore the promising potential of the synthesized nanomaterials for highly sensitive and selective detection of phenylethylamine.

Highly sensitive and specific identification of complex volatile organic compound mixtures has always been a huge challenge in the field of gas detection. To address this issue, the gas-responsive two-dimensional metal–organic framework (MOF) composites have been designed for fabricating a colorimetric sensor arrays for extremely sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The physically exfoliated MOF nanosheets Zn 2 (bim) 4 with large surface area and abundant unsaturated active sites were used for loading various dyes to form dye/Zn 2 (bim) 4 composites. Due to the protective effect on dye activity and preconcentration for VOCs, the dye/Zn 2 (bim) 4 composites-based colorimetric sensor arrays showed significantly enhanced sensitivity compared with the corresponding dyes for the detection of various VOCs. The mechanical flexibility of the dye/MOF nanosheets endowed the excellent film-forming properties on various substrates for fabricating the colorimetric sensor arrays. Besides owing to the hydrophobic property and the protection of the Zn 2 (bim) 4 nanosheets, the dye/Zn 2 (bim) 4 sensor arrays exhibited excellent anti-interference including humidity and temperature influence. On the basis of the fantastic properties of dye/Zn 2 (bim) 4 composites for VOCs detection, the dye/Zn 2 (bim) 4 sensor arrays were applied for the early perception of the plant disease late blight via ultra-sensitive and highly specific sensing the VOCs released from the infected plants.

In quest of sustainable development, research efforts have been focused on replacing conventional toxic solvents with green solvents to fabricate greener membranes, illuminating the significant role of green chemistry and engineering to promote a circular economy. Nevertheless, the use of green solvents in membrane technology is still in the early stages since its practicality remains elusive. This work demonstrates the preliminary screening of green solvents using Hansen solubility parameters (HSP), followed by an optimization of the synthesis conditions of polyimide using the selected green solvent. Based on HSP evaluation, TamiSolve® NxG is identified as a potential green solvent for polyimide synthesis. Two synthesis approaches such as chemical imidization and one-step high temperature polymerization are examined by varying monomer concentrations, polymerization temperatures, imidization time, and imidization temperatures. The polyimide membranes developed from the optimized synthesis conditions ameliorate the gas separation performance with more than 30 % increment in O 2 and CO 2 permeabilities without compromising their O 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /N 2 , and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivities. Additionally, the membranes prepared from green solvent-synthesized polyimide exhibit a remarkable enhancement in CO 2 plasticization pressure up to 25 bar which outperform that of conventional membranes within 5–15 bar.

The environmental problem caused by industrial emissions of NO x has been studied in the past dacades. In this study, red mud coupling with phosphorus sludge were used to enhance the solution to absorb NO x from the flue gas . Firstly, red mud reacted with the binder silicic acid in the phosphorus sludge, destroying the emulsion structure of the phosphorus sludge. Then, the P 4 in the phosphorus sludge is completely released, and the P 4 reacted with O 2 in the flue gas to produce O 3 and O. NO and NO 2 contained in the flue gas reacted with the active O and O 3 to produce high-valent NO x , such as NO 3 , N 2 O 5 . At last, the mixed slurry of red mud and phosphorus sludge absorbed the high-valent NO x , resulting in the formation of Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F along with HNO 3 . Using phosphorus sludge to produce O 3 in the reaction process can reduce the production cost of O 3 and achieve waste utilization. Meanwhile, the interaction between red mud and phosphorus sludge can promote phosphorus sludge to produce O 3 and remove F - from phosphorus sludge, as well as avoid the problem of secondary pollution. This study should be helpful for red mud and phosphorus sludge utilization and flue gas denitration.

The detection of dissolved gases in the oil of oil-immersed transformers is essential to evaluate the operating status of oil-immersed transformers. In this study, a CuO/TiO 2 /N-MWCNTs composites-based sensor was fabricated by hydrothermal method for the detection of dissolved CO gas in oil. The introduction of N-MWCNTs with high specific surface area, high electrical conductivity and multiple adsorption sites effectively improved the response value and response/recovery performance for CO. The response can reach 4.33 at a CO concentration of 50 ppm, which is 1.74 times higher than that of the CuO/TiO 2 sensor. In addition, the prepared sensor presents a fast response/recovery time (230 s/60 s) to CO, and has excellent selectivity and long-term stability. Finally, a multi-concentration CO alarm system was constructed through a reasonable circuit design. It is shown that the CuO/TiO 2 /N-MWCNTs-based sensor can achieve high-precision CO detection, which can provide a new idea for the detection of dissolved CO gas in the oil of oil-immersed transformers.
