Dark pericarp disease (DPD) in litchi is a physiological disease caused by excess manganese (Mn) in pericarp, impacting fruit appearance and marketability and leading to substantial economic loss. The susceptibility of litchi varieties to DPD differs greatly, but the underlying mechanisms remain vague. In this study, we investigated the discrepancies in physiological and biochemical processes in pericarp of two varieties (Feizixiao and Heiye) resistant to DPD and a susceptible cultivar (Guiwei) during fruit development from the same orchard. Pericarp Mn in Guiwei was significantly lower than that in Feizixiao and slightly higher than that in Heiye through fruit growth. Under Mn stress, Feizixiao and Heiye maintained ROS homeostasis, whereas substantial H 2 O 2 accumulated in Guiwei. Reduced anthocyanins and soluble sugars and increased lignin were observed in diseased Guiwei compared to Feizixiao and Heiye. The expression of genes encoding Mn transporters, light-harvesting antenna complex, ROS scavenging proteins and enzymes involved in anthocyanin synthesis was downregulated, whereas that of genes functioning in H 2 O 2 production and lignin synthesis was upregulated in Guiwei, and that of genes involved in glucose metabolism was altered, suggesting that Mn was poorly transported and sequestrated within Guiwei pericarp cells, and excess Mn boosted H 2 O 2 overproduction. The inhibited anthocyanin synthesis, enhanced lignin accumulation and tuned sugar metabolism conferred Guiwei adaptability to Mn stress. Conclusively, the poor Mn intracellular transferability and variations in response to H 2 O 2 accumulation associated with disturbed photosynthetic energy deliver under excess Mn, are collaboratively responsible for the cultivar-dependent DPD vulnerability in litchi.

Fe–N co-doped carbon catalyst has received increasing attention in the field of organic wastewater treatment because of its unique structure and outstanding activity. However, the reusability, catalytic activity, and pH working range are still a great challenge for future application. Herein, a novel αFe-HM@C-T catalyst was prepared by pyrolyzing a mixture of starch and heme and was analyzed by TEM, H2-TPR, XRD, BET, XPS, FTIR, and Raman spectrum. Meanwhile, αFe-HM@C-T catalysts show the highest catalytic performance due to abundant porous structure, higher redox property, and unique Fe–Nx configuration. The rhodamine B (RhB) could be almost completely degraded within 30 min on the 5Fe-HM@C-850, and recovery rates of catalytic activity of 96% and 91.8% were achieved in peroxydisulfate (PDS) and H2O2 systems with an extensive buffer pH range. Furthermore, mechanistic insights by quenching experiments and EPR verified the high removal efficiency of RhB mainly attributed to indirect oxidation of SO4•–, •OH, and 1O2 in both systems, and the potential mechanism was proposed.

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) possess outstanding catalytic properties arising from unique intermetallic synergistic effects and electronic coupling, yet the precise construction of cooperative reaction centers remains a critical challenge. In this study, a synergistic electrostatic modulation strategy is employed to anchor Zn Co dual-atomic sites onto an S/N co-doped carbon substrate (Zn,Co-DAC/SNC), in which Zn and Co are cooperatively distributed at an interatomic distance of 2.59 Å within an N3 Zn Co N/C/S coordination environment, forming stable reactive centers. Sulfur doping induces Zn-p/Co-d orbital coupling, which strengthens electronic synergy and promotes efficient ·OH generation, endowing the catalyst with excellent ibuprofen (IBP) degradation activity (>98 %). In this system, Co serves as the primary active center responsible for O O bond cleavage, Zn modulates the electronic structure to enhance ·OH yield, and sulfur atoms stabilize metal coordination while regulating interfacial charge. Under sulfur regulation, the Zn Co bimetallic centers induce electron redistribution and an upshift of the d-band center, thereby lowering the O O bond cleavage barrier (−3.79 eV) and preferentially driving one-step bond scission to yield dual ·OH. This work elucidates the Zn/Co/S ternary synergy in H 2 O 2 activation and provides theoretical guidance for the structure-activity design of multimetal-heteroatom catalysts.

The 2D ultrathin MOF nanosheets, which effectively integrate metals and functional ligands, possess the advantageous features of molecular catalysts and exhibit remarkable catalytic activity in multiphase catalysis. Herein, we employed the sacrificial template method to achieve in situ attachment of metalloporphyrin onto a ZnO substrate, resulting in the formation of surfactant-free 2D dispersed structures of Zn-TCPP(Mn)/ZnO. The multilayered stacked B-Zn-TCPP(Mn) (3D) blocks were prepared by growing Zn 2+ mixed with metalloporphyrin as a comparison. The novel composite catalyst Zn-TCPP(Mn)/ZnO was employed for the efficient epoxidation of various alkenes using H 2 O 2 as an oxidant at ambient temperatures. Notably, alkenes conversion within 20 min achieves a high yield and impressive 1980 h − 1 turnover frequency. The composite catalyst can still maintain its structural integrity after undergoing five consecutive cycles, and the total yield of oxidized styrene is slightly reduced. This was confirmed by a series of characterization analyses and other assessments. Additionally, comparative experiments revealed that the B-Zn-TCPP(Mn) blocks underwent partial exfoliation into 2D nanosheets following the catalytic reaction, thereby enhancing the catalytic conversion efficiency in subsequent epoxidation reactions. This finding provides compelling evidence for the heightened catalytic activity of 2D materials. Graphical Using the sacrificial template method, metal porphyrin was attached in situ to the ZnO surface to prepare surfactant-free, highly dispersed Zn-TCPP(Mn)/ZnO, which had a positive effect on the stability and activity of the catalyst. Notably, styrene underwent complete conversion within 20 min, with an impressive epoxide selectivity reaching 97%, and exhibits a remarkable conversion frequency of 1980 h − 1 . More significantly, the composite catalyst Zn-TCPP(Mn)/ZnO exhibits a structurally stable framework and maintains a substantial level of catalytic activity even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Meanwhile, other substrates exhibited varying degrees of selectivity, ranging from moderate to commendable.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) exhibiting superior fluorescence characteristics were synthesized employing o-phenylenediamine and 2-methylimidazole as precursors. The synthesized NCDs exhibited yellow photoluminescence with an excitation/emission maxima of 410/554 nm with a quantum yield of 28.41%. The presence of pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, graphitic N, and amino N functionalities on the NCDs’ surface provided strong evidence for the successful nitrogen doping of the carbon dots. Upon exposure to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the NCDs exhibited a significant reduction in fluorescence intensity, which could be restored by the addition of ascorbic acid (AA), demonstrating a quantitative relationship between ascorbic acid and fluorescence efficiency. A novel fluorescence “off–on” system utilizing these NCDs was developed for the quantification of AA. The sensing mechanism relies on H2O2-induced fluorescence quenching via the selective oxidation of the NCDs’ surface, followed by fluorescence restoration upon AA addition due to the reduction in surface defects. Meanwhile, further experiments confirmed that the quenching mechanism was static quenching. The NCDs demonstrated a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.605 μM for AA detection. The use of NCDs for AA sensing was validated through the analysis of commercially available beverages. This study aimed to establish a simplified method for ascorbic acid detection. The experimental findings indicated that the developed technique exhibited high accuracy in quantifying ascorbic acid. These findings suggest that the developed NCDs possess considerable potential as a multifunctional sensing tool for various analytical applications.

Efficient and cost-effective removal of emerging contaminants from water bodies has become a global priority. This study assessed the degradation efficiency of bisphenol-A (BPA) at varying Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 (molar ratio 1:1) concentrations. In addition, the degradation mechanism of BPA by Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 and the evolution of toxicity in intermediates were examined. The results indicated that, no additional acid is needed, with a Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentration at 0.15 mM and a reaction time of 20 min, and the degradation efficiency of BPA exceeded 90%; this is primarily because the oxidation still occurred when Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 was added to neutral BPA solutions, possibly leading to the conversion of the active functional groups of BPA into carboxyl groups. The deprotonation of these carboxyl groups provided the acidic conditions necessary for Fenton oxidation, thereby possibly facilitating further degradation of BPA and the formation of more carboxyl-rich intermediates, replenishing acidity for Fenton reactions and promoting continuous oxidation. Moreover, highly toxic intermediates are likely to form during the degradation of BPA at a 0.05-0.1 mM Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentrations, but this tendency decreases substantially with increasing Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentrations. At a Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.2 mM, the intermediates were predominantly low-toxicity or even nontoxic. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring toxicity evolution and the conditions favorable for the formation of low-toxic or nontoxic intermediates in the removal of emerging contaminants. To further validate the applicability of this method, p-chloroxylenol (PCMX) and paracetamol (PAM) were also tested under identical conditions, and both showed high degradation efficiencies under neutral pH.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have currently attracted interest as effective self-sacrificial templates for the fabrication of hierarchical porous metal–nanoparticle materials. This study involved the synthesis of Cu-based MOF-loaded polyacrylonitrile (MOF/PAN) fibers using electrospinning, subsequently subjected to calcination in a nitrogen environment to yield Cu nanoparticle-loaded carbon nanorods (Cu@CNRs) as heterogeneous catalysts. The catalytic performance of prepared Cu@CNRs was investigated via hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), peroxydisulfate (S 2 O 8 2− ), and peroxymonosulfate (HSO 5 − ) activated degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The activation performance of Cu@CNRs followed the sequence: HSO 5 − > S 2 O 8 2− > H 2 O 2 , indicating that HSO 5 − was the most effective oxidant under identical conditions. The Cu@CNR-I/HSO 5 − system demonstrated exceptional efficacy, attaining 99.99 % SMX removal in 30 min and a significant rate constant of 0.2312 min −1 . The improved activity is due to the hierarchical porous structure, elevated surface area, plentiful active sites, and robust Cu-N-C/HSO 5 − synergy. The carbonization created a polarization disparity in Cu N coordination, thereby promoting PMS activation by Cu(I/II) species. Radical quenching and EPR tests revealed that SO₄ •- and OH • radicals predominated the degradation route. The primary operating factors, such as catalyst and oxidant dose, solution pH, SMX concentration, coexisting anions, and humic acid, were carefully examined. The catalyst Cu@CNR-I exhibited remarkable catalytic stability and reusability over five cycles, indicating significant potential as a sustainable heterogeneous catalyst for wastewater treatment applications.

In this paper, a simple, one-step chemical synthesis of Au@poly(m-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) core-shell nanoparticles by direct dropping aqueous chloroauric acid aqueous solution to m-phenylenediamine aqueous solution was reported, which is a facile and green method. We further evaluate the use of the obtained Au@PMPD to modify glassy carbon electrode and for H2O2 electrocatalytic biosensing. The results indicate that the aggregated small Au nanoparticles in the inner part of PMPD could be an ideal sensing platform for H2O2 detection.

Tailoring the electronic structure of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been widely adopted to optimize their performance. However, the steric effect originating from the layered or crystal structure of a catalyst is often neglected. Herein, we demonstrate the importance of such steric effect in a one-dimensional π-d conjugated metal-organic framework with Ni-(NH) 4 nodes (Ni-BTA) for optimizing its electrocatalytic performance, where the activity and selectivity towards two-electron ORR for H 2 O 2 production are largely enhanced. Theoretical simulation and in-situ characterization demonstrate the formation of inter-layer H-bonds between *OOH intermediates and -N-H groups in the adjacent top layers of the Ni-sites, enhancing the *OOH binding energy to an optimum value. Thus, the as-prepared Ni-BTA catalyst exhibits an outstanding electrocatalytic 2e − -ORR performances under neutral and alkaline conditions (e.g., >85% H 2 O 2 selectivity from −0.1-0.4 V vs. RHE and >13.5 mol g −1 h −1 H 2 O 2 yield in neutral electrolytes), also showing great potential on water treatment and disinfection. Here, we highlight the alternative avenues for utilizing the non-coordinated structure to regulate the catalytic performance, thus providing opportunities for the design of catalysts and beyond.

Wet flue gas denitrification offers a new route for converting industrial nitrogen oxides (NOx) into highly concentrated nitrate wastewater. This study presents a novel H2O2-based advanced oxidation process that utilizes the composite calcined phosphate rock to activate H2O2 for efficient NOx removal. The calcination treatment for composite phosphate rocks was found to enhance de-NOx efficiency and capacity by varying the CaMg(CO3)2 and Ca5(PO4)3OH contents and creating oxygen vacancies. A systematic investigation of the phase structural evolution under alkaline H2O2 conditions identified CaMg(CO3)2 and Ca5(PO4)3OH as the primary active components, with CaMg(CO3)2 preferentially participating in the reaction. Radical quenching experiments and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed the predominant roles of superoxide radicals (O2•–) and surface-bound hydroxyl radicals (•OHsurface) in NOx oxidation. A mechanistic pathway was proposed, highlighting the synergistic effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mineral phase transitions on NOx removal. The proposed NOx purification method offers a promising option for nitrogen recovery and NOx pollution control.

Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) is one of the most important reactive oxygen species (ROSs) for organic pollution controlling in advanced oxidation processes, while its production suffers from numerous H 2 O 2 addition and narrow pH range in generally used Fenton reaction. Herein, we demonstrate a BiOIO 3 (BIO) piezo-catalyst loaded with γ-FeOOH nanoparticles (FNPs) (BF) that can convert O 2 to ·OH in a wide pH condition without external H 2 O 2 addition under ultrasonication. It is found that the robust interfacial interaction facilitates rapid electron migration from BIO to FNPs, enabling two-electron O 2 reduction into H 2 O 2 at the FNPs site, while the leaving behind piezo-holes to perform two-electron water oxidative H 2 O 2 generation on BIO. Because the electron-rich nature of FNPs favors the H + adsorption that contributes a surface acidic micro-environment, the produced H 2 O 2 can be in-situ catalyzed into ·OH in either neutral or even alkaline conditions with a great stability. Finally, the optimal BF can achieve either an impressive ·OH yield of 38.1 µM h −1 or a high H 2 O 2 yield of 522.0 µM h −1 by regulating the FNPs loading mass, which enables dual capabilities of rapid organic pollutants degradation and H 2 O 2 production in a wide pH condition.

At present, the most commonly used advanced oxidation technology for drinking water treatment has the disadvantage of low utilization rate of oxidant. After research and comparison, the UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) combined process selected in this study can effectively degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water and improve the utilization rate of hydrogen peroxide. The results showed that the removal rate of SMX by UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) process was 96.7%, and the utilization rate of H 2 O 2 was increased by 25%; the UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) combined process also had a good effect on the degradation of fluorescent components and other organic matter in water; the presence of nitrite ion and humic acid significantly reduced the degradation efficiency of SMX, under the condition of nitrite ion concentration of 5 mg/L or humic acid concentration of 10 mg/L, the removal rate of SMX by UV/H 2 O 2 /Fe(III) combined process decreased by 10.68% or 11.92%, respectively. In terms of mechanism research, the reactivity of SMX molecules was theoretically calculated by density functional theory (DFT), and the atoms with higher contribution rate were calculated, and the degradation products and four degradation pathways of SMX were identified and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Finally, the potential ecological toxicity of SMX and its degradation products was predicted by ECOSAR software and luminescent bacteria experiments; it was found that the toxicity of SMX and its degradation products was relatively high at 15 min.
