Enhancing effect of Mn2+ substitution in CuAl2O4 spinel for methanol steam reforming in a microreactor

Moyu Liao,Ruofei Xiang,Xinwen Zhou,Zhongxu Dai,Li Wang,Hang Qin,Hanning Xiao

Hydrogen generation via methanol steam reforming is a promising method for producing renewable energy. In this work, a series of Mn 2+ -substituted CuAl 2 O 4 spinels were prepared by solution combustion method, and the crystal structure, micromorphology, chemical constitution, reduction behavior, acidity, specific surface area and surface chemical state of the spinels were comprehensively characterized by various equipments. The obtained spinels were washcoated on Cu foams to prepare monolithic catalysts, and the catalytic performance of the catalysts was evaluated in a methanol steam reforming microreactor. Compared with the binary Cu–Al spinel, the Mn 2+ substitution led to a decrease in the particle size, a change in the chemical composition and reduction behavior, a decline in the acidity, an increase in the specific surface area, and an improvement in the surface chemical state. As a result, the release rate of active Cu from the Mn-containing CuAl 2 O 4 spinel was significantly slowed down and the formed nanoparticles were fine, which was believed to be in favor of maintaining a stable catalytic performance longer. Among the prepared catalysts, the monolithic catalyst loaded with Cu 0.4 Mn 0.6 Al 2 O 4 exhibited the highest activity and stability. The findings of this work suggested that introducing Mn 2+ might be a promising way to regulate the Cu releasing property for obtaining a better sustained release catalyst system.

Cu–Cu direct bonding in air by in-situ reduction of copper oxide with glycerol

Xiaocun Wang,Shuo Han,Fei Xiao

With the maximum operating temperature of semiconductor devices becomes higher, novel die attach methods for high temperature application are required. Cu–Cu direct bonding provides a simple solution that eliminates the use of die attach materials and the related reliability issues. However, the easy oxidation of copper is the main obstacle for Cu–Cu direct bonding. In this study, a simple and efficient method for Cu–Cu direct bonding in minutes at low pressure and low temperature in air without complex pre-treatment was developed. The problem of copper oxidation was solved by rapid in-situ reduction and temporary passivation of glycerol. The bonded samples show very high shear strength. The surface leveling effect of the glycerol reduction was verified, which is beneficial for bonding. The bonded samples showed little change in shear strength after 1000 h of aging at 250 °C in air, demonstrating a long-term high temperature service capability. This new bonding method has great potential in power devices packaging and flip chip bonding.

Crystal Facet Effect in Chiral PdPt3 Hollow Nanocages as Nanozymes for Use in Enantiomer Recognition

Liying Zong,Xiaoqiao Yang,Xiaohuan Sun,Zheng Xi,Jie Han

Understanding the crystal facet effect in chiral enantiomer recognition plays an important role in designing and fabricating chiral nanozymes for biosensing and biodetection applications. Herein, we design an ideal platform to study the crystal facet effect in chiral enantiomer recognition using cubic and icosahedral PdPt3 hollow nanocages (NCs) as peroxidase mimics via surface ligand decoration of l/d-cysteine (l/d-Cys). The two PdPt3 NCs have the same structure of surface ligand, particle size, wall thickness, surface area, and elemental composition, with the only difference of exposed crystal facets, i.e., {100} for cubic PdPt3 NC-l/d-Cys and {111} for icosahedral PdPt3 NC-l/d-Cys. The cubic PdPt3 {100} facet demonstrates 2.2-fold higher peroxidase-like catalytic activity than the icosahedral PdPt3 {111} facet, which also leads to the better enantiomer recognition performance of discerning 3,4-dihydroxy-l/d-phenylalanine. Our work provides the concept of crystal facet tuning for designing chiral nanozymes with high stereoselective properties.

Excellent broadband sound absorption in composites manufactured by embedding piezoelectric polymer aerogels in porous ceramics

Kunhan Chen,Dong Wang,Jiawei Du,Qikuan Cheng,Lu Zhang,Weibang Xia,Yunming Wang,Huamin Zhou

Challenges remain in the design and manufacture of acoustic devices with excellent broadband sound absorption performance. Herein, an efficient acoustic absorber with hierarchical pore structure and additional acoustic-electrical energy conversion mechanism is reported in which combined zirconia porous ceramics and P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric aerogels. Reticular cross-scale pore structure enables sound waves to propagate and dissipate effectively. The vibrations generated by piezoelectric aerogels under acoustic excitation further consume sound waves through converting acoustic energy into electrical energy based on the local piezoelectric and triboelectric effect, which improves the medium and low-frequency sound absorption capability. The average sound absorption coefficient of the prepared acoustic composites reaches 0.87 while the noise reduction coefficient is 0.54. Furthermore, the composites also possess low density, high compressive strength, good hydrophobicity and thermal insulation properties for applications. Therefore, this innovative strategy offers new design ideas for the next generation of high-performance acoustic materials with promising applications in transportation and industrial construction.

Formation of nitrated naphthalene in the sulfate radical oxidation process in the presence of nitrite

Jiayue Dong,Peizeng Yang,Deyang Kong,Yiqiang Song,Junhe Lu

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have become a global environmental concern due to their potential hazardous implication for human health. In this study, we found that sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ) could effectively degrade naphthalene (NAP), a representative PAH in groundwaters, generating 1-naphthol. This intermediate underwent further degradation, yielding ring-opening products including phthalic acid and salicylic acid. However, the presence of nitrite (NO 2 − ), a prevalent ion in subsurface environments, was observed to compete with NAP for SO 4 •− , thus slowing down the NAP degradation. The reaction between NO 2 − and SO 4 •− generated a nitrogen dioxide radical (NO 2 • ). Concurrently, in-situ formed 1-naphthol underwent further oxidization to the 1-naphthoxyl radical by SO 4 •− . The coupling of 1-naphthoxyl radicals with NO 2 • gave rise to a series of nitrated NAP, namely 2-nitro-1-naphthol, 4-nitro-1-naphthol, and 2,4-dinitro-1-naphthol. In addition, the in-situ formed phthalic acid and salicylic acid also underwent nitration , generating nitrophenolic products, although this pathway appeared less prominent than the nitration of 1-naphthol. When 10 μΜ NAP was subjected to heat activated peroxydisulfate oxidation in the presence of 10 μΜ NO 2 − , the total yield of nitrated products reached 0.730 μΜ in 120 min. Overall, the presence of NO 2 − dramatically altered the behavior of NAP degradation by SO 4 •− oxidation and contributed to the formation of toxic nitrated products. These findings raise awareness of the potential environmental risks associated with the application of SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes for the remediation of PAHs-polluted sites in presence of NO 2 − .

Facile preparation of Co/C catalysts encapsulated in carbon and selective hydrogenation in nitroaromatic hydrocarbons

Qianxi Wang,Yuyu Dai,Xueli Hong,Yunyang Hong,Rui Zhang,Xinhuan Yan

Non-precious metal catalysts play a significant role in the field of hydrogenation. This study synthesized Co-BTC from cobalt nitrate hexahydrate and 1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid benzene. By changing the calcination temperature of Co-BTC in an inert atmosphere, a series of novel non-precious metal Co/C microsphere catalysts were successfully prepared. The composition and structure of the Co/C-n catalysts were characterised by FESEM, TEM, XRD, IR, XPS and BET. These results confirm that 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid provides a rich carbon matrix and metallic Co nanoparticles are generated by self-reduction on the carbon matrix. The graphite matrix formed during the calcination process has a rich pore structure and good dispersion of active components on the catalyst surface, which is very favourable for the catalytic reaction. In the hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB) to o-chloroaniline (o-CAN), the Co/C-500 catalyst showed the best catalytic performance. At 80 °C and 2 MPa H2 for 60 minutes, the conversion rate of o-CNB reached 99% and the selectivity reached 99%. When the reaction takes 5 minutes, the conversion rate reaches 10.5%, and the TOF value reaches 36.3 h−1. The Co/C-500 catalyst can be easily recycled and reused after reaction with the help of a magnetic field. Moreover, this catalyst is also effective in the selective hydrogenation of other nitroaromatic hydrocarbons containing halogen or unsaturated groups to corresponding aniline. This simple and direct synthesis method may lead to the economic production of large-scale Co/C catalysts, which is an attractive prospect for the industrial trial production of corresponding aniline.

Kynurenic Acid Plays a Protective Role in Hepatotoxicity Induced by HFPO-DA in Male Mice

Jianglin Hu,Jiayin Dai,Nan Sheng

Following its introduction as an alternative to perfluorooctanoic acid, hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) has been extensively detected in various environmental matrices. Despite this prevalence, limited information is available regarding its hepatotoxicity biomarkers. In this study, toxicokinetic simulations indicated that under repeated treatment, HFPO-DA in mice serum reached a steady state by the 4th day. To assess its subacute hepatic effects and identify potential biomarkers, mice were administered HFPO-DA orally at doses of 0, 0.1, 0.5, 2.5, 12.5, or 62.5 mg/kg/d for 7 d. Results revealed that the lowest observed adverse effect levels were 0.5 mg/kg/d for hepatomegaly and 2.5 mg/kg/d for hepatic injury. Serum metabolomics analysis identified 34, 58, and 118 differential metabolites in the 0.1, 0.5, and 2.5 mg/kg/d groups, respectively, compared to the control group. Based on weighted gene coexpression network analysis, eight potential hepatotoxicity-related metabolites were identified; among them, kynurenic acid (KA) in mouse serum exhibited the highest correlation with liver injury. Furthermore, liver-targeted metabolomics analysis demonstrated that HFPO-DA exposure induced metabolic migration of the kynurenine pathway from KA to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, resulting in the activation of endoplasmic reticulum stress and the nuclear factor kappa-B signaling pathway. Notably, pretreatment with KA significantly attenuated liver injury induced by HFPO-DA exposure in mice, highlighting the pivotal roles of KA in the hepatotoxicity of HFPO-DA.

In-situ preparation of highly photocatalytic active octylimidazole functionalized CuO in deep eutectic solvent medium

Qiang Wang,Miao Li,Yunchang Fan

The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) through various catalysts has emerged as a promising method for the degradation of organic pollutants. However, the search for effective catalysts that are both cost-efficient and easy to prepare continues to pose significant challenges. In this study, a simple approach was developed to synthesize highly active cupric oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using deep eutectic solvent (DES) as the reaction medium. During the preparation, octylimidazole (OIM), a component of the DES, is adsorbed in-situ onto the surface of CuO NPs. The resulting OIM-functionalized CuO (OIM-CuO) NPs exhibited an enhanced charge transfer rate, improved separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and superior catalytic activity compared to pure CuO NPs. The OIM-CuO-1 NPs demonstrated a degradation efficiency exceeding 94 % for the typical dye, rhodamine B (RB) within a duration of 3.0 min under both acidic and neutral conditions. Furthermore, the catalytic performance of the synthesized OIM-CuO-1 NPs surpassed that of previously reported catalysts. Notably, the catalytic activity of the OIM-CuO-1 NPs remained stable after undergoing five consecutive degradation cycles. This research offers valuable insights into the development of highly effective complex catalysts and may facilitate the advancement of photocatalysts in the degradation of organic pollutants.

In-situ interfacial reactions in boron nitride-reinforced zinc implants for achieving strength and toughness

Shuai Ci-Jun,Zhang Jin,Yang Ming-Li,He Chong-Xian,Shuai Xiong,Xiao Xin-Yi,Wang Dong-Sheng,Shao Yin-Jin,Yang You-Wen

Boron nitride (BN), as a nano-reinforcement, offers notable benefits for zinc (Zn)-based implants due to its distinct asymmetric hexagonal structure and high fracture strength. However, the limited interface adhesion between BN and Zn limits its potential for strengthening and toughening. In this study, copper (Cu) was in situ grown on acidified BN through chemical synthesis and subsequently incorporated into laser additive manufacturing of Zn to enhance interface bonding. During this process, the Cu on BN experienced a displacement reaction with Zn due to thermal reduction induced by the high-energy laser, leading to the replacement of Cu by Zn and the formation of a robust covalent bond between BN and the Zn matrix, thereby improving load transfer. Additionally, the reduced Cu further interacted with Zn to produce the CuZn 5 phase, which was evenly dispersed in the Zn matrix under Marangoni vortices, resulting in both dispersion and Orowan strengthening. Consequently, the ultimate tensile strength of the composites achieved (251 ± 7) MPa. The fracture toughness also showed a notable increase from 12.10 to 24.03 MPa·m 1/2 , as the unique structure of BN effectively redistributed stress at the crack tip and absorbed considerable fracture energy. Furthermore, the Cu@BN/Zn implants demonstrated excellent antibacterial properties. Graphical abstract

Ir-O-Mn embedded in porous nanosheets enhances charge transfer in low-iridium PEM electrolyzers

Wang Dawei,Lin Fangxu,Luo Heng,Zhou Jinhui,Zhang Wenshu,Li Lu,Wei Yi,Zhang Qinghua,Gu Lin,Wang Yanfei,Luo Mingchuan,Lv Fan,Guo Shaojun

Using metal oxides to disperse iridium (Ir) in the anode layer proves effective for lowering Ir loading in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). However, the reported low-Ir-based catalysts still suffer from unsatisfying electrolytic efficiency and durability under practical industrial working conditions, mainly due to insufficient catalytic activity and mass transport in the catalyst layer. Herein we report a class of porous heterogeneous nanosheet catalyst with abundant Ir-O-Mn bonds, achieving a notable mass activity of 4 A mg Ir −1 for oxygen evolution reaction at an overpotential of 300 mV, which is 150.6 times higher than that of commercial IrO 2 . Ir-O-Mn bonds are unraveled to serve as efficient charge-transfer channels between in-situ electrochemically-formed IrO x clusters and MnO x matrix, fostering the generation and stabilization of highly active Ir 3+ species. Notably, Ir/MnO x -based PEMWE demonstrates comparable performance under 10-fold lower Ir loading (0.2 mg Ir  cm −2 ), taking a low cell voltage of 1.63 V to deliver 1 A cm −2 for over 300 h, which positions it among the elite of low Ir-based PEMWEs.

Identification of key anti-glycation polyphenols in Sakura through metabolic profiling and in vitro assessments

Yuhang Zhu,Zhangtie Wang,Xiang Li,Siyu Chen,Daoxin Dai,Weihu Li,Binhai Shi,Baolong Wang,Guoliang Jie,Baiyi Lu

Sakura, a traditional edible flower, has been investigated for its anti-glycation potential; however, the bioactive components remain unclear. Polyphenols are recognized for their exceptional anti-glycation properties. In this study, main polyphenols were identified from seven varieties through metabolomics. 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-OCA), 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3-OCA), and caffeic acid were confirmed as key agents through multivariate analysis, which was further validated by anti-glycation assessments. The concentrations of these polyphenols in Cerasus serrulata ‘Kanzan’ (CK) were 2.52 ± 0.08, 3.31 ± 0.18 and 2.38 ± 0.15 mg/g, respectively, contributing to its superior AGEs inhibition ratio (100 μg/mL) of 76.11 ± 0.40 %. Simulated digestion revealed that isomerization between 5-OCA and 3-OCA occurred during the gastric phase. Both compounds were metabolized to caffeic acid in the intestinal phase, contributing to a sustained anti-glycation activity of 64.74 ± 1.11 %. Overall, our study provides a theoretical basis for the development of Sakura-based functional foods targeting anti-glycation.

Insights into the critical role of anions in nanofibrillation of cellulose in deep eutectic solvents

Zhang Qing,Dai Ziliang,Zhang Lili,Wang Zhiguo

Complex interactions between cellulose molecules and small molecules of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) can lead to dramatic changes in the structure of the hydrogen bond network in cellulose. However, the molecular and ionic evolution mechanism of DESs on cellulose nanofibrillation is still unclear. In this study, the mechanism and the critical role of ions in DESs on cellulose nanofibrillation were investigated. The results showed that cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with a diameter of less than 200 nm could be prepared directly using DES consisting of lactic acid (LA) and chloride, e.g., LA/ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) or LA/dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC). Using LA/Zinc chloride (ZnCl 2 ), CNFs with a diameter of less than 100 nm can be prepared. The Kamlet-Abboud-Taft parameters (KAT value) showed that DESs containing LA had higher hydrogen bond acidity ( α ) than other systems (such as ethylene glycol and urea) without LA, which provided more active protons to improve the proton mobility in the cellulose nanofibrillation. Also, DESs composed of LA and Cl − had high hydrogen bond alkalinity ( β ), which led to great changes in the original hydrogen bond network of cellulose and the formation of a new hydrogen bond structure, thereby easing the dissolution of the cellulose. Thus, the cellulose hydroxy groups could be esterified by the LA under high-temperature moistening conditions, and the CNFs prepared by the DES system containing LA and Cl − had the highest degree of substitution (DS) (up to 0.73 in LA/ZnCl 2 system) after high-temperature moistening.
