Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), which catalyzes the production of highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), has been widely used in tumor therapy in the past five years. However, most of the current nanomaterials for CDT are difficult to penetrate into the tumor effectively due to the lack of motility, resulting in an unsatisfactory CDT effect. Herein, bioinspired jellyfish-like carbon/manganese nanomotors (JCMNs) are designed to achieve hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and NIR light dual-propulsion for the enhanced CDT therapy. Based on the jellyfish-like asymmetric structure, the manganese component can catalyze H 2 O 2 to generate chemical concentration gradient, propelling JCMNs to dynamically generate ROS in cells by self-diffusiophoresis. In addition, the carbon component of JCMNs can absorb near-infrared (NIR) light to produce a temperature gradient, driving JCMNs to enhance tumor penetration by self-thermophoresis. The combination of chemical and NIR light propulsions significantly improves the efficiency of tumor CDT, revealing that it should be a reasonable strategy to promote the development of nanobiomedicine by endowing nanosystems with propulsion capacity.

Hg 2+ poses a great threat to human health and the environment due to its bioaccumulation and permanent damage. Herein, a reversible CHEF-based near-infrared fluorescent probe 2-(3-((E)-4-((E)-4-(diethylamino)-2- hydroxybenzylidene)amino)styryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)propanedinitrile ( DHEY ) capable of specifically recognizing Hg 2+ was constructed. DHEY exhibits advantages of large Stokes shift (157 nm), excellent selectivity , high sensitivity (LOD = 3.2 μg/L), and fast response efficiency (<3 min). Interestingly, DHEY can also realize rapid and effective detection of Hg 2+ after being recycled 7 times. The successful recovery of trace Hg 2+ in different environmental water samples fully demonstrates the potential of DHEY for actual applications. In particular, DHEY enables real-time observation of the distribution and translocation pattern of exogenous Hg 2+ in HeLa cells and zebrafish. This work provides important theoretical support for investigating the fate of heavy metal ions in the environment using fluorescence techniques.

Bacterial infections, such as bacterial keratitis (BK) and subcutaneous abscess, pose significant challenges to global healthcare. Innovative and new antibacterial agents and antibacterial strategies are in demand to control infections in this era of high drug resistance. Nanotechnology is gradually emerging as an economically feasible and effective anti-infection treatment. High-entropy MXenes (HE MXenes) are used to confer desirable properties with exposed active sites to high-entropy atomic layers, whose potential application in the field of biomedicine remains to be explored. Herein, monolayer HE MXenes are fabricated by implementing transition metals with high entropy and low Gibbs free energy to fill the gap in the biocatalytic performance of non-high-entropy MXenes. HE MXenes are endowed with extremely strong oxidase mimic activity ( K m = 0.227 m m ) and photothermal conversion efficiency (65.8%) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) biowindow as entropy increases. Subsequently, HE MXenes realize NIR-II-enhanced intrinsic oxidase mimic activity for killing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and rapidly removing the biofilm. Furthermore, HE MXenes can effectively treat BK and subcutaneous abscess infection induced by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as nanotherapeutic agents with minuscule side effects. Overall, monolayer HE MXenes demonstrate promising clinical application potential in the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections and promote the healing of infected tissues.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have been extensively applied in biomedicine . However, the potential of MXene-based nanomedicine in sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has been rarely explored. Here, under the guidance of theoretical calculation, Nb 2 C MXenes are engineered as a high-performance sonocatalyst/sonosensitizer through mild in-situ self-oxidation. The work function values of Nb 2 C MXenes with different oxidation degrees are calculated to determine the optimized conditions to construct efficient Schottky heterojunction in the self-oxidized Nb 2 C MXenes. Experimentally, the niobium oxide clusters are homogeneously self-generated in-situ in Nb 2 C MXenes to form efficient Schottky barriers after the mild hydrothermal oxidation. The results reveal that the Schottky heterojunction can accelerate the separation of sono-triggered electron-hole pairs and inhibit their recombination, which profoundly augments the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation efficiency of the in-situ self-oxidized Nb 2 C MXenes (denoted as Nb 2 C-Ox) under ultrasound (US) irradiation. The mild oxidation also allows the Nb 2 C-Ox to inherit the high photothermal performance of Nb 2 C MXenes in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window. Accordingly, the developed Nb 2 C MXene-originated sonocatalyst/sonosensitizer can achieve high therapeutic efficacy based on the sonodynamic effect and NIR-II photonic hyperthermia. Therefore, this work proposes a theoretical calculation-oriented strategy to design and fabricate new MXene-based sonocatalysts/sonosensitizers for biomedical applications .

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment modality for cancer treatment owing to its minimally invasive nature and negligible drug resistance. However, the disadvantages of conventional photosensitizers including universal aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect or nonselective activation are still major hurdles for PDT clinical application. Herein, a new strategy for flexible manipulating photosensitizers in effective quenching and quick recovery of photoactivation is presented by introducing porphyrin units into upper critical solution temperature (UCST) block copolymer decorated gold nanorods (AuNR-P(AAm-co-AN-co-TPP)-b-PEG). The UCST block copolymer can achieve a self-quenching effect to make the porphyrin photosensitizers in the “Off” state by π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions at physiological temperature, which greatly minimizes the nonselective phototoxicity of the photosensitizers to meet the requirement of phototherapy protected from sunlight. After the immigration of AuNR-P(AAm-co-AN-co-TPP)-b-PEG nanoparticles into the tumor tissue and the internalization by cancer cells, the UCST polymer chains can be extended under the local heating of AuNRs by NIR light irradiation, and then porphyrin photosensitizers are turned “On” to dramatically boost the PDT efficiency. Therefore, the process of PDT could be well manipulated in the “Off/On” state by the hybrid nanoplatform with UCST block copolymers and AuNRs, which will open new horizons for clinical treatments of PDT.

Strategies utilizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) to cause cell death are widely practiced for cancer therapy, including photodynamic therapy (PDT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). However, the efficiency of PDT alone is greatly hindered by tumor hypoxia, laser penetration depth and the relatively low oxidation performance of 1 O 2 and its subsequent products H 2 O 2 . Meanwhile, CDT is limited by the deficiency of endogenous H 2 O 2 in cancer cells. If the ROS, produced in PDT process, served as the substrate in CDT, the total ROS production would be greatly enhanced. However, the increased ROS could be scavenged by the overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in cancer cells, impairing the effect of PDT and CDT. Thus, in this study, a self-reinforcing ferric pyrophosphate based nanoagent (FeP-ZnPc) for synergetic NIR-triggered photo/chemodynamic therapy with glutathione depletion ability was constructed. The constructed FeP-ZnPc exhibited “triple use”: PDT, CDT and GSH depletion function. Upon internalized into cancer cells, the FeP-ZnPc could release Fe 3+ which underwent a redox reaction with GSH, resulting in GSH depletion and the production of Fe 2+ . Upon laser, Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) in the FeP-ZnPc could generate ROS for PDT directly. Moreover, the elevated ROS particularly H 2 O 2 could serve as the substrate of CDT, accelerating the Fenton reaction process, producing the strongest oxidants, hydroxyl radical ( OH) and leading to ROS burst to expedite cell death. This combination strategy of enhancing ROS production and inhibiting ROS elimination could eventually break down the redox homeostasis and enhance the ROS-mediated cancer therapy.

To fully utilize the solar light, photocatalyst with broad spectrum response from UV to near-infrared (NIR) is desirable. In this work, ternary mixed valent Bi 2 O 4 -Bi 4 O 7 -BiO 2-x with rich oxygen vacancy has been synthesized through one-pot hydrothermal treatment of NaBiO 3 . The results showed that through adjusting the hydrothermal conditions, oxygen vacancy-rich Bi 2 O 4 -Bi 4 O 7 -BiO 2-x nanocomposites with much higher efficiency than single or mixed bismuth oxides (Bi 2 O 4 , Bi 4 O 7 , BiO 2-x and Bi 4 O 7 -BiO 2-x ,) can be synthesized for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under UV, visible, and NIR light irradiation. In addition, the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (LC–MS) characterization demonstrated that BPA was oxidized to 4-isopropenyphenol first and the rings were opened sequentially under NIR light irradiation. Further detection of reactive species indicated that holes, O 2 − , and OH were the main oxidizing species in the degradation system. The experimental observations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that both type-II and the Z-scheme charge transfer with oxygen vacancies as electrons and holes mediators were formed at the interfaces of Bi 2 O 4 , Bi 4 O 7 , and BiO 2-x , resulting in a very efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers in the composite. This work adds to the growing potential of mixed valent bismuth oxides based photocatalysts and is expected to accelerate the pace of the development of new-generation photocatalysts with high efficiency utilizing full-spectrum solar light.

Graphical Tunable nanocrystals . Ternary I-III-VI 2 (AgInS 2 ) colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) with precise control of the composition (from In 3+ doping to ternary composition) and good NIR fluorescence performance (800–1000 nm) have been synthesized by facile low-temperature in situ conversion of colloidal Ag 2 S nanoparticles. In 3+ ions were inserted into the crystal lattice of Ag 2 S NCs at a relatively low temperature as dopant with ternary AgInS 2 NCs obtained at a higher temperature following a phase transition (see figure). Focusing on ternary I-III-VI 2 colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized with precise control of the composition (from doping to ternary composition) and NIR fluorescence performance, monodisperse binary In 3+ -doped Ag 2 S NCs and ternary AgInS 2 NCs have been achieved successfully by facile low-temperature in situ conversion of colloidal Ag 2 S nanoparticles. In 3+ ions were inserted into the crystal lattice of Ag 2 S NCs at a relatively low temperature as dopant and ternary AgInS 2 NCs were obtained at a higher temperature following a phase transition. These doped Ag 2 S and AgInS 2 NCs based on different indium precursor concentrations were explored with respect to the position and intensity of the near-infrared photoluminescent emission at different doping levels and crystal phase evolution.

Multifunctional nanoplatforms have been developed into advanced drug delivery systems for cancer therapy. In this study, we report a charge-switchable nanocapsule with multistage pH-responsive behaviors. First, DOX-encapsulated and oleylamine-embedded hollow structures with a diameter of 132 ± 21 nm are prepared via the double emulsion method. Subsequently, the hollow structures are encompassed by Gd-DTPA-, chlorin e6 (Ce6)-, and folate (FA)-modified BSA to form tumour-targeted, dual NIR/MR imaging-guided and chemo–photodynamic therapeutic nanoplatforms. Importantly, the nanocapsule can intelligently switch its surface charge to positive under mildly acidic conditions (pH 6.5) with no release of Ce6 and DOX, which is confirmed by ξ-potential and cumulative release measurements. Moreover, confocal imaging pictures demonstrate that acid-sensitive DOX sealed in nanocapsules is progressively released into the nuclei of MGC-803 cells. These advantages as well as FA-targeting facilitate effective endocytosis and synergistic therapeutic efficacy. Selective tumour accumulation and long tumour retention time are further indicated by NIR/MR in vivo imaging. In addition, excellent therapeutic efficacy combined with chemotherapy (DOX) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is observed with the tumour eventually ablating at the 15th day. All results demonstrate that the as-prepared nanocapsules hold great potential for clinical cancer theranostics.

A new type of gel polymer electrolyte composed of free-standing aramid nanofibers was used to fabricate all-solid-state near-infrared (NIR) electrochromic devices for NIR sheltering applications. This new type of gel polymer electrolyte showed excellent mechanical and heat endurance compared with currently available gel polymer electrolytes. The good film-forming ability of the aramid nanofibers makes assembling the electrochromic devices more convenient. The as-fabricated device showed an optical modulation of about 40% at 980 nm and achieved a coloration efficiency of 79.5 cm 2 C −1 , values that are larger than those previously reported for other electrochromic devices with similar structures. It is expected that aramid nanofibers-LiClO 4 -based electrolyte films with high mechanical and heat endurance will have potential applications in spacecraft thermal control, optical communication , and biomedical analysis.

To inhibit bacterial infection in situ and improve osseointegration are essentially important for long-term survival of an orthopedic implant , in particular for infection-associating revision surgery. Herein, we fabricate a functional molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 )/polydopamine (PDA)-arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) coating on titanium (Ti) implant to address above concerns simultaneously. The coating not only improved the osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), but also endowed Ti substrates with effective antibacterial ability when exposing to near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. It accelerated glutathione (GSH) oxidation via photothermal energy and induced intrinsic ROS-independent oxidative stress damage deriving from MoS 2 nanosheets . The results displayed that RGD-decorated MoS 2 nanosheets significantly increased the cellular osteogenic behaviors of MSCs via up-regulating osteogenesis-related genes (ALP, Runx2, Col I and OCN) in vitro. Moreover, the functionalized Ti substrates demonstrated great antibacterial efficiency of over 92.6% inhibition for S. aureus and E. coli under NIR-irradiation. Hyperthermia induced by photothermal effect accelerated the GSH consumption and ROS-independent oxidative stress destroyed the integrity of bacteria membranes , which synergistically led to protein leakage and ATP decrease. Furthermore, co-culture experiment showed that S. aureus contamination was efficiently cleaned from MoS 2 /PDA-RGD surface after NIR photothermal treatment, while MSCs adhered and proliferated on the MoS 2 /PDA-RGD surface. In an S. aureus infection model in vivo, MoS 2 /PDA-RGD modified Ti rods killed bacteria with an efficiency of 94.6% under NIR irradiation, without causing damage to normal tissue. More importantly, the MoS 2 /PDA-RGD modified Ti implants accelerated new bone formation in comparison with TNT implants in vivo .

Cr3+-activated near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are the most promising materials for commercialization. However, the emission of most Cr3+-activated phosphors is typically located in the NIR-I region and achieving luminescence towards the NIR-II region (>900 nm) via Cr3+ doping remains challenging. This study reports a novel Cr3+-activated NaBaScSi2O7 phosphor that exhibits broadband NIR emission centred at 974 nm with a full width at half maximum of 140 nm under 493 nm blue light excitation. The emission wavelength exceeds that of most Cr3+-activated NIR phosphors. The underlying mechanism for the encouraging phenomenon is attributed to the strong charge polarisation arising from the intrinsic local coordination environment of the Cr3+ ions, as confirmed by charge differential density (CDD) and the electron localization function (ELF) analyses. The photoluminescence properties of phosphors were systematically investigated, and the performance of the fabricated NIR pc-LED device was evaluated for night vision and non-invasive imaging. Notably, the NaBaScSi2O7 phosphor displayed a bright green colour with excellent colour properties and its potential as a stable green ceramic pigment was explored.
