PVDF-based polymer electrolyte has been widely studied because of its good mechanical strength, easy processing, excellent thermal/chemical stability. However, pure PVDF has the problems of low ionic conductivity and insufficient interface stability with the electrodes. Herein, this research presents a facile strategy for fabricating Ce-MOF-derived rodlike nanocrystalline CeO2 to incorporate composite polymer electrolytes for Li-metal batteries. The CeO2-PVDF-HFP composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) could achieve enhanced ionic conductivity and interfacial stability.Notably, the ultrasmall nanocrystalline CeO2-PVDF-HFP CPEs demonstrates superior Li⁺ transport kinetics (5.04×10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹), lithium dendrite suppression and an extended electrochemical stability window up to 4.6 V. When applied in Li| LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4 full batteries, the quasi-solid polymer electrolyte system could maintain a discharge capacity of 94 mAh g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, deliver good cycling stability and rate capability retaining 99% capacity after prolonged 500 circles at 1 C. These advancements highlight special functional nanocrystalline fillers improve the performance of PVDF-based polymer electrolyte, offering a promising pathway for developing reliable solid-state lithium metal batteries.

To overcome the activity and durability bottlenecks of Pd catalysts in the deep dehydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), we couple dielectric-barrier cold plasma with CeO2 modulation. This green, low-energy cold-plasma process treats a Ce-doped Pd/C precursor at near-room temperature, redistributing the oxide and constructing a stable CeO2-carbon (CeO2–C) interface, and drives Pd nanoparticles to anchor at this interface, generating electron-deficient Pdδ+ sites in intimate contact with Pd0. Structure-performance correlations show that the new interface greatly increases Pd dispersion and Lewis-acid site density, while the Pdδ+ centers, through concurrent electronic withdrawal and acidity enhancement, accelerate the rate-determining 4H-NPCZ → NPCZ step. Consequently, with a catalyst mass fraction of 20 wt %, PdCe5C–Ar achieves complete dehydrogenation of fully hydrogenated N-propylcarbazole (12H-NPCZ) within 240 min at 180 °C and delivers a mass-specific hydrogen-release rate of 223.0 mmol H2 gmetal–1 min–1─almost twice the best literature value─while retaining full activity after eight cycles. DFT calculations attribute the performance leap to a downward shift of the Pd d-band center and to a lowered third-step barrier (ΔH3 = 2.381 eV) induced by Pdδ+. This work is the first to apply low-temperature plasma interface engineering to a Pd-CeO2–C ternary system, offering a broadly applicable paradigm for low-Pd, high-efficiency, long-life LOHC dehydrogenation catalysts.

Due to the increased use of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs), their potential environmental risks have caused concern. However, their effects on the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process and the later recovery of AGS are still unclear. In this study, we comprehensively determined the changes in pollutant removal and the levels of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in AGS that were exposed to CeO2NP treatments (0 (the control, R0), 1 (R1), and 5 (R5) mg/L), following an increase in the influent chemical oxygen demand (COD). An increase in the CeO2NP concentration enhanced their inhibitory effect on the removal of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), and promoted the production of polysaccharides (PS) and proteins (PN) in loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) or tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), as well as the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) components in EPS, but had no long-term effects on the removal of organic matter. When the addition of CeO2NPs was stopped and the concentration of influent COD increased, the TN and TP removal efficiencies in R1 and R5 slowly increased and recovered. In R1, they were only 4.55 ± 0.55% and 2.71 ± 0.58% lower than in R0, respectively, while the corresponding values for R5 were 5.06 ± 0.46% and 6.20 ± 0.63%. Despite the LB-EPS and TB-EPS concentrations in the R1 and R5 treatments recovering and being similar to the levels in the control when no CeO2NPs were added, they were still slightly higher than in the R0, which indicating that the negative effects of CeO2NPs could not be completely eliminated due to the residual CeO2NP levels in AGS.

This study presents a systematic investigation of CeO 2 -doped reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a support for platinum catalysts in direct methanol fuel cells. CeO 2 /RGO composites with loadings of 3–10 wt% CeO 2 were synthesized via controlled precipitation and thermal reduction, followed by the deposition of Pt nanoparticles using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. Physical characterization by XRD, TEM, and XPS confirmed the uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles (3–4 nm) and revealed chemical interactions between Pt and CeO 2 . Electrochemical testing demonstrated that the catalyst with 5% CeO 2 doping exhibited optimal performance: A methanol oxidation current of 959 mA/mgPt, which is four times higher than that of the undoped Pt/RGO benchmark. An electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 87.1 m 2 /g. Enhanced CO tolerance, as indicated by an If/Ib ratio of 1.24. The enhanced catalytic activity is attributed to the oxygen storage capacity of CeO 2 and synergistic interfacial effects between Pt and CeO 2 , which were evidenced by a positive shift in the Pt4f binding energy observed in XPS analysis. This work demonstrates a cost-effective strategy for improving Pt utilization in fuel cell anodes through doping with rare earth oxides.

CeO2 nanorods supported Co–CoOx catalysts showed high selectivity for higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) from syngas. The selectivity has found to increase with lowering the Co loadings, and the value over Co1/CeO2 (19.86%) is twice higher than that over Co5/CeO2 (8.67%). The active sites at the interfaces between Co0 and CoOx, or to say, Co–CoOx pairs, have evidenced to be responsible for HAS. The strong metal–support interactions between Co and CeO2 retard the reduction of CoOx and stabilize the intermediates such as CO–Coδ+. Likely, CO favors dissociating on the metallic Co surface to form CHx species, while CO is associatively activated on Coδ+ sites. Moreover, the structure evolution of the Co–CoOx interface was revealed during calcination, reduction, and reaction using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (CO-DRIFTS). The structure–performance relationship of HAS over Co/CeO2 was proposed.

The catalytic decomposition of methane is a strategic process to produce COx-free hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials. In this work, for the first time, highly porous ceria was prepared by a urea-assisted solid state combustion method and used as a support for the preparation of a set of platinum-promoted nickel catalysts. The amount of Pt varied from 0.05% to 0.2% while retaining 20% nickel in the catalysts. The prepared catalysts were completely characterized for their structural, textural and redox properties, and their catalytic performance was tested for undiluted methane decomposition. A fine surface dispersion of nickel oxide over ceria was observed in the prepared catalysts. No peaks related to Pt were observed in the catalysts, indicating its good surface dispersion. An enhancement was observed in the properties of the Ni/CeO2 catalyst after the addition of Pt as a promoter. The crystallinity of NiO was not altered by the addition of Pt, whereas the specific surface area of the catalysts was increased with the incremental addition of Pt. Furthermore, the reduction temperature of nickel oxide was shifted to low temperature in the Pt-promoted catalysts due to the hydrogen spillover effect. The surface composition and chemical states of the Pt-promoted Ni/CeO2 catalysts were further studied using XPS. The Pt-promoted Ni/CeO2 catalysts exhibited high catalytic efficiency for methane decomposition due to their improved catalytic properties. The addition of Pt increased the hydrogen yield, and a significant increase in the hydrogen yield was observed for the incremental amount of Pt in the catalysts. Moreover, by increasing the reaction temperature from 650 °C to 750 °C, the hydrogen yield increased significantly. A maximum hydrogen yield of 65% was observed for the 0.2% Pt@Ni/CeO2 catalyst at 750 °C. The enhanced activity and stability of the catalysts were attributed to the synergistic effects of Ni and Pt due to their fine surface dispersion over ceria with a proper metal–support interaction. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes with different diameters were deposited over the catalysts. The carbon nanotubes deposited over the Ni/CeO2 catalyst were found to be more homogeneous than the Pt-promoted catalysts. Moreover, a wide hollow channel was observed in the carbon nanotubes deposited over the Pt-promoted catalyst.

A series of Zr-doped CeO 2 nanorods supported by Au nanoparticle catalysts with different morphologies were prepared for methyl methacrylate (MMA) synthesis via direct oxidation esterification of methacrolein (MAL) with methanol. Catalytic activities under mild conditions (0.3 MPa; 80°C) were evaluated in the kettle reactor. Different characterization methods, such as XRD, Raman, N 2 adsorption, ICP, TEM, SEM, XPS, and H 2 -TPR techniques, were applied to study the relationship between catalytic activity and structural characteristics, especially the form of Zr doped into the lattice of CeO 2 and the promotion mechanism of selective oxidation. The influence of Au supported on Ce 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 nanorods (Au/CZ-R) was also discussed. The results exhibited that the highest catalytic activity for the oxidative esterification with a MAL conversion of 99% and a MMA selectivity of 74% was achieved. The MMA synthesis performance correlated well with the surface oxygen vacancies, in particular for the active oxygen species around the Au particles.

The Pt-Ni nanoframe catalysts have attracted great interest owing to their unique electronic structure and excellent catalytic performance. However, the stability of the tenuous edges of nanoframe-structures is dissatisfactory and their universal applications in catalytic market beyond electrocatalytic reactions are yet to be tapped and explored. Herein, we developed a new core@shell structured Pt-Ni nanoframe@CeO 2 (Pt-Ni NF@CeO 2 ) composite via etching the Ni from inhomogeneous Pt-Ni rhombic dodecahedra (Pt-Ni RD) by cerium(III) acetate hydrate (Ce(OAc) 3 ). In this path, Pt-Ni RD was used as self-sacrificial template, while the Ce(OAc) 3 serves as the provider of the Ce 3+ source and OH − for the formation of CeO 2 shell, etchant of Pt-Ni RD, and the surface modification agent. By this way, the etching of Pt-Ni RD and the formation of the CeO 2 shell are simultaneously proceeded to form the final Pt-Ni NF@CeO 2 in one step. The obtained Pt-Ni NF@CeO 2 exhibits strong interfacial charge transfer interaction between Pt-Ni NF core and CeO 2 shell even without reduction treatment, leading to enhanced catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene. After introduction of trace silver, the Pt-Ni-Ag 4.9 NF@CeO 2 achieves remarkable catalytic performance for the selective conversion of phenylacetylene to styrene: high conversion (100%), styrene selectivity (86.5%), and good stability. It reveals that encapsulation noble metal nanoframes into metal oxide to form core@shell structured hybrids will indeed enhance their stability and catalytic properties. Particularly, this work expends the application of noble metal nanoframes materials to hydrogenation reactions.

CeO2/polymer nanoparticles have drawn considerable attention for their excellent UV absorption properties. However, many challenges still exist in the successful incorporation of ceria into the polymer matrix for the easy agglomeration and photocatalytic activity of CeO2 nanoparticles. Herein, we address these issues by constructing three-layer structured nanoparticles (M-CeO2@SiO2) and incorporating them into a polymer matrix through a mini-emulsion polymerization process. During this process, small-sized nano-ceria became uniformly anchored on the surfaces of monodisperse silica particles first, and then the particles were coated with an MPS/SiO2 shield. The morphology and dispersion of the nanoparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The performance of the hybrid films was characterized using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis) and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. Results showed that the M-CeO2@SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited a three-layer structure with a mean diameter of 360 nm, and they possess good compatibility with acrylic monomers. After the addition of M-CeO2@SiO2, hybrid films exhibited enhanced UV absorption capacity as expected, accompanied by an obvious improvement in hydrophobicity (the water contact angle increased from 84.2° to 98.2°). The results showed that the hybrid films containing M-CeO2@SiO2 particles possess better global performance as compared with those containing no particles.

Spherical cerium dioxide (CeO 2 –S) nanoparticles were successfully prepared using a solvothermal method, and their performances in catalytic oxidation reactions were studied. The CeO 2 –S catalyst showed superior low-temperature catalytic activity for styrene removal (T 90 = 118 °C, GHSV = 18,000 h −1 ) compared with commercial CeO 2 . The characterization results showed that there were numerous oxygen defects in CeO 2 –S that were key to its catalytic performance at low temperatures, high redox properties, and high adsorption capacity for the reaction gases (O 2 and styrene). Moreover, the catalytic performance of CeO 2 –S was highly stable (132 h), and the particles were reusable. FTIR and in-situ DRIFTS results showed that the type of intermediates formed during the oxidation of styrene determined the CeO 2 catalytic stability, and the main intermediates were bidentate carbonate species that accumulated on the surface of deactivated CeO 2 –S and were not thermally stable. Moreover, the soft carbon that also deposited on CeO 2 –S during the reaction was easily decomposed at higher temperatures. The role of the oxygen vacancies on the CeO 2 –S catalyst was further revealed by correlating the concentration of oxygen vacancies and the accumulation of coke on the catalyst surface.

Chemical recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) attracts increasing attention worldwide since it is a sustainable way to tackle the escalating plastic waste problem and create a circular plastic economy. Herein, defect-rich CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable sizes and shapes were conveniently synthesized by one-step precipitation with KH550 modification and first used as novel catalysts for the glycolysis of PET. Among the obtained CeO2 catalysts, CeO2–2.7 nm NPs possessed the best performance for depolymerization at 196 °C, completing the reaction in 15 min with a PET conversion of 98.6% and a monomer yield of 90.3%. The glycolysis mechanism study reveals the relationship between defect engineering and catalytic activity. An ultrasmall size of 2.7 nm minimizes oxygen defect formation energy of CeO2 NPs and increases the dispersity in ethylene glycol (EG). Rich oxygen defects on CeO2 nanoparticles accelerate the glycolysis reaction evidently via inducing the generation of Ce3+ and providing sites for the adsorption and activation. This work provides the application prospect of defective heterogeneous catalysts in the depolymerization reaction under low energy consumption.

Phosphorus (P) has brought a series of environmental problems while benefiting mankind. To reclaim phosphorus from wastewater efficiently and conveniently, a novel magnetic adsorbent with aminated lignin/CeO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 composites (AL-NH 2 @Fe 3 O 4 -Ce) possessing a high affinity to phosphate and easily separated from aqueous solutions was developed in this work. The characterization results revealed that Fe and Ce elements have been doped into the aminated lignin successfully. Batch experiment results convinced that the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of AL-NH 2 @Fe 3 O 4 -Ce was 183.72 mg P/g at pH = 3, which was roughly 4.5 times greater than aminated lignin and 8.5 times greater than cerium oxide, respectively. The adsorption isotherm was fitted well by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics was in line with the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption thermodynamics indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and naturally exothermic. Additionally, AL-NH 2 @Fe 3 O 4 -Ce exhibited high selectivity towards phosphate over common coexisting anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− and F − ). After five consecutive cycles, the adsorption performance of AL-NH 2 @Fe 3 O 4 -Ce decreased by only 16% compared with the fresh adsorbent, indicating that AL-NH 2 @Fe 3 O 4 -Ce exhibited excellent recycling ability. The results of XPS analysis and batch experiments showed that the possible mechanisms were electrostatic attraction and inner-sphere complexation. The tailored interfacial chemistry affinity to phosphate as well as endowed magnetic property reveled AL-NH 2 @Fe 3 O 4 -Ce could be adopted as an up and coming adsorbent in phosphate removal process.
