Food contamination caused by Listeria monocytogenes has been a major concern worldwide, and postbiotics derived from lactic acid bacteria are promising in controlling foodborne pathogens, while the antibacterial effects and mechanisms are still largely unclear. This study aimed to investigate the anti - L. monocytogenes activity and mechanisms of the postbiotics derived from Ligilactobacillus salivarius LSA-6 (Postbio-LSA-6), and its potential application in Inner Mongolian cheese preservation. Results showed Postbio-LSA-6 exhibited efficient anti - L. monocytogenes activity, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 4 mg/mL. Postbio-LSA-6 at 2MIC could significantly disrupt the bacterial membrane integrity, the membrane-damaged cells percentage increased to 49.6 %, leading to the intercellular materials leakage and cell death. Besides, Postbio-LSA-6 at 2MIC could induce the oxidative stress in bacterial cells, the membrane-fluorescence cells percentage increased to 46 %, resulting in lipid peroxidation. Untargeted metabolomics analysis showed organic acids and fatty acids such as erythronic acid, citric acid, 2-hydroxybutyric acid, and oleic acid were identified as the main differentially expressed metabolites in Postbio-LSA-6. Furthermore, Postbio-LSA-6 could effectively maintain the moisture content and pH stability, reduce the color and texture alterations, and extend the shelf life of cheese samples by suppressing microbial proliferation and lipid oxidation. These results offered new insights on the antibacterial activities of postbiotics against foodborne pathogens, and provided a low-cost, label-friendly biopreservation strategy for local dairy products preservation.

Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo has been used extensively in functional foods and garnered significant attention because of its therapeutic properties and nutritional value. Anthocyanins are prone to degradation in environmental and biological conditions, leading to color fading and loss of bioactivity. Forming complexes with endogenous polysaccharides can enhance their stability and protect the color of anthocyanin products. In this study, anthocyanins extracted from D. officinale (DOA) were complexed with D. officinale polysaccharide extract (DOP) to investigate the effects of complexation on the physicochemical properties of the anthocyanins. DOA–DOP complexes were characterized by scanning/transmission electron microscopies, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic light scattering, and multiple spectroscopies. Stability assessments and simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion were performed. Bioactivity was evaluated using a human colon epithelial (Caco-2) cell monolayer model. Spectral analyses revealed hydrogen bonding as the primary interaction in the DOA–DOP complexes. Complexation significantly enhanced DOA retention under light exposure, heat treatment, pH variation, and exposure to metal ions. DOP improved the in vitro antioxidant capacity of DOA. Furthermore, the DOA–DOP complexes exhibited prolonged resistance to upper gastrointestinal digestion and restored lipopolysaccharide-induced epithelial hyperpermeability in the Caco-2 cell model. Collectively, DOA–DOP complexation enhanced D. officinale anthocyanin stability, bioactivity, and colonic bioavailability.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder marked by dysregulated immune responses and pyroptosis of intestinal epithelial cells, a type of programmed cell death that aggravates inflammation. Current therapeutic strategies frequently encounter limitations in both efficacy and specificity. Herein, we developed a calcium manganese-based (CaMn2O4) pancatalytic nanozyme designed to mitigate pyroptosis and alleviate IBD symptoms. The calcium manganese-based nanozyme exhibits dual enzyme (catalase and superoxide dismutase)-mimetic catalytic activities, scavenging reactive oxygen species and suppressing GSDMD cleavage, a key mediator of pyroptosis. In vitro studies demonstrated that CaMn2O4 nanozyme significantly reduced pyroptotic cell death in lipopolysaccharide/nigericin-stimulated cells. In a murine colitis model, CaMn2O4-based nanozyme treatment attenuated inflammatory infiltration, preserved epithelial barrier integrity, and downregulated pyroptosis-related markers. This study highlights the potential of pancatalytic nanotherapy targeting pyroptosis as a novel strategy for IBD treatment.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Ludwigia adscendens (L.) Hara ( L. adscendens ) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), first mentioned in Sheng Cao Yao Xing Bei Yao ( Essential Guide to Raw Herbal Properties ). It clears heat, removes dampness, detoxifies, and reduces swelling. In TCM, it is prescribed for acne caused by dampness-heat accumulation. It is also used for cold, fever, sore throat, boils, dermatitis, and snake or dog bites. Research shows it has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-lipoxygenase effects. However, studies on its impact on sebaceous gland function (a key factor in acne pathogenesis) are still limited. Aim of the study This study aims to investigate the effects of L. adscendens extract (LHE) on sebaceous gland function and its mechanisms. Materials and methods Active compounds in LHE were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Its effects on lipid synthesis, sebocyte proliferation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assessed in a 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced sebocyte model. Untargeted lipidomics was used to analyse sebum composition and detect LHE-induced changes. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities were evaluated using zebrafish models and biochemical assays. Sebum-regulatory efficacy was measured to assess LHE's impact on sebum production. Results LHE showed strong biological activity by activating the PPARγ/LXRα/SREBP1 pathway, reducing lipid production, inhibiting sebocyte hyperproliferation, and delivering notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Lipidomic analysis revealed that LHE effectively altered lipid composition, especially by lowering triglycerides (TG), diacylglycerols (DG), ceramides (Cer), and hexosyl-1-ceramides (Hex1Cer), with major changes observed in medium- and long-chain TG and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) levels. Efficacy tests confirmed that LHE reduced sebum production and improved skin texture by shrinking pore size. Conclusions LHE improves sebaceous gland function by reducing lipid overproduction and hyperproliferation through the PPARγ/LXRα/SREBP1 pathway. It also enhances the lipid profile by lowering key lipid molecules like TGs and PEs. Moreover, LHE shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These findings suggest its therapeutic potential for sebaceous gland-related conditions and reveal new insights into its mechanism in topical use.

The flower of Syringa pubescens Turcz., frequently prepared as herbal tea, exhibits various biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective activities. Herein, we identify the chemical constituents from ethanol extract of S. pubescens flower (SPFE) and explore its antioxidant, anti-xanthine oxidase (anti-XOD), and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme activities, and anti-inflammatory activities and mechanisms. SPFE contained a variety of glycosides and showed good antioxidant capacity and effectively inhibited the activity of 5-LOX and XOD enzymes in vitro. In the model of RAW264.7 cell inflammation generated by lipopolysaccharide, SPFE not only impeded the expression of inflammatory mediators and the accumulation of malondialdehyde, but also restored the capacity of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, SPFE could notably relieve or treat inflammation by suppressing the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 proteins. In vivo inflammation models, oral SPFE remarkably reduced the swelling of the ear, paw tissues in mice and had a good anti-inflammatory activity, reducing cell infiltration in the claw tissue, and restoring the degree of oxidative damage in the organism. Our findings demonstrate that SPFE exhibits promising potential as a novel therapeutic agent or nutraceutical for anti-inflammatory applications. Graphical

Chemical modifications can impart distinct physicochemical properties and biological activities to polysaccharides. In this study, Lavandula angustifolia polysaccharide (LAP) was purified through a series of processes including decolorization, deproteinization, freeze-drying, and column chromatography using DEAE-750 cellulose and Sephadex G-200, yielding a major homogeneous polysaccharide designated as LAP. The LAP was subsequently modified via acetylation method, producing a series of acetylated derivatives with varying degrees of substitution, referred to as LAP-1, LAP-2 and LAP-3, respectively. The characterization of these polysaccharides was conducted using various methodologies, including viscosity, solubility, molecular weight (Mw), ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Congo red, thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermogravimetry (DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The LAP and its derivatives were identified as heteropolysaccharides composed of varying molar ratios of fucose, rhamnose, mannose and galactose, with Mws of 27.32, 19.74, 17.52, and 21.43 kDa, respectively. The acetylation modifications were found to influence the viscosity, solubility, surface morphology and thermal properties of LAP and its derivatives, and notably, these effects were observed to be beneficial. Furthermore, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity assays demonstrated that acetylation significantly enhanced the biological activities of the polysaccharides, exhibiting a positive correlation with the degree of substitution. These findings suggest that distinct functional and bioactive polysaccharides can be developed through acetylation modification. Graphical

To address the low extraction yield and structural degradation issues of conventional methods, this study optimized microwave-assisted extraction (61°C, 64 min, 30:1 mL/g ratio) to obtain Inonotus obliquus polysaccharides (IOP), followed by DEAE-52 and Sephadex G-100 purification to isolate two fractions: neutral IOP-1 (12.67 kDa) and acidic IOP-2 (26.13 kDa). Monosaccharide analysis revealed both as heteropolysaccharides containing mannose, glucose, and galactose with distinct compositional ratios. Structural characterization showed IOP-1 primarily contains 1,4-Glcp, 1,3,6-Glcp, and 1,3-Manp linkages, while IOP-2 features 1,3-Glcp, 1,4-Glcp, 1,4,6-Glcp, and 1,4-Galp linkages. Multiple antioxidant assays demonstrated superior free radical scavenging capacity in both polysaccharides, with IOP-1 exhibiting exceptional activity exceeding typical polysaccharides performance. These findings highlight IOP-1's potential as a novel natural antioxidant for pharmaceutical and food applications. Graphical

This study investigated the effects of ultra-high pressure (UHP)-assisted alkaline extraction on the physicochemical and structural properties of carrageenan. UHP treatment between 100 and 300 MPa significantly enhanced performance, with yield increasing by 12.7% at 100 MPa and gel strength reaching 911.57 g/cm 2 at 300 MPa, accompanied with a 16.15% improvement when compared with the control. Compositional analysis showed a 13.26% reduction in sulfate groups and a 19.63% increase in 3,6-anhydrogalactose at 300 MPa, together with higher uronic acid (increased by 30.11%) and total sugar (increased by 13.90%) contents. These changes resulted in functional improvements, e.g., the elevated water-holding capacity. LF-NMR analysis indicated the reduced water mobility and a higher proportion of bound water for carrageenan treated at 300 MPa. Antioxidant assays further confirmed that carrageenan treated at 300 MPa exhibited stronger radical scavenging activity, with DPPH and •OH clearance rates increased by 20.99% and 8.87% ( p < 0.05), respectively, whereas treatment at 500 MPa attenuated these effects. Overall, the results demonstrated that moderate UHP treatment, particularly at 300 MPa, effectively improved the structural and functional properties of carrageenan, supporting its potential application as a functional hydrocolloid.

The healing of diabetic wounds is a complex process involving multiple physiological mechanisms, which necessitates an appropriate microenvironment to effectively facilitate the healing process. Recently, advanced wound dressings constructed by functionalizing cotton nonwovens with appropriate structures and biological properties have aroused intensive interest in chronic wound treatment and care. The present study fabricated composite dressings by coating cotton nonwoven webs with UV-cross-linked methacrylated gelatin (Megel) hydrogels containing Salvia miltiorrhiza–Radix Puerariae/polyhydroxyalkanoate-loaded short nanofibers (SP: 632 ± 191 nm diameter, 2.9 ± 2.7 μm length). The composite dressings exhibited a uniform microporous structure (pore size: 24.2 ± 9.2 μm), superior water retention (85.8 ± 0.3% after 2 h), and markedly improved mechanical properties (Young’s modulus: 6.8 ± 1.3 MPa; elongation at break: 153.8 ± 10.4%). Additionally, they demonstrated excellent performance in swelling, biodegradation, and free radical scavenging. All composite dressings demonstrated excellent biosafety and rapid hemostasis in liver bleeding models. Critically, the Cotton&Megel + SP-3% dressing accelerated diabetic mouse wound closure to ∼98% within 18 days, which also reduced early inflammation and markedly improved regenerated tissue quality by promoting collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and hair follicle formation. These results indicate that our composite dressings made from SP, Megel hydrogel, and cotton nonwoven hold significant potential as advanced dressing candidates for diabetic wound treatment.

The increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastic packaging has driven interest in the development of biodegradable edible films with functional properties. In this work, edible blend films were developed based on fish gelatin (FG), soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS), and tea polyphenol (TP) for active food packaging applications. The FG/SSPS/TP films were prepared by solvent casting and characterized in terms of their structural, mechanical, optical, thermal, and barrier properties. FTIR, SEM, and XRD analyses revealed TP-induced morphological and structure changes in the biopolymer matrix. The incorporation of TP significantly enhanced the antioxidant activity and UV-shielding properties of the films, while also modifying their flexibility and surface hydrophilicity. The packaging performance of FG/SSPS/TP films was evaluated using beef tallow as a model food product. Compared to neat FG/SSPS and polyethylene films, the FG/SSPS/TP films effectively suppressed lipid oxidation of the samples during storage. The results demonstrated that the prepared FG/SSPS/TP films possess strong potential for use as edible and active packaging materials for food products.

The development of advanced antimicrobial packaging is crucial for ensuring food safety. This paper reports a novel photodynamic antibacterial film (PVA-CM@TFQ) that effectively combats microbial contamination, delays food spoilage and minimizes the risk of foodborne diseases transmission. Quercetin (Que) was encapsulated within a tannic acid-ferric ion (TA–Fe 3+ ) coordination network and embedded into a biodegradable polymer matrix composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CM). The TA-Fe 3+ network significantly improved the stability of Que, while the resulting PVA-CM@TFQ demonstrated excellent mechanical properties, barrier performance, and biocompatibility. Upon light irradiation, the film produced reactive oxygen species (ROS), exhibiting potent photodynamic antibacterial activity, with inhibition rates of 99.83%, 99.42%, 100%, and 100% against Escherichia . coli, Staphylococcus . aureus , Candida. albicans , and Saccharomyces cerevisiae , respectively. When applied to raspberries, hawthorn, goldenberries, and lime, the film effectively prolonged shelf life by suppressing microbial proliferation, minimizing weight loss, and maintaining fruit firmness. These findings highlight a sustainable, light-responsive strategy for fruit preservation with significant potential in enhancing food safety.
