Bi-based semiconductors have been regarded to be an ideal platform in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to fuels. However, the insufficient charge transfer efficiency greatly restricts their practical application. Herein, we fabricated 1D/2D hierarchical heterostructures by the hybridization of Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 and rod-like MOF-derived MoS 2 anchored in nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC-MoS 2 ) using Mo-MOF as a precursor followed by sulfidation and typical solvothermal process. Compared to pristine Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 nanosheet and NPC-MoS 2 nanorod , the 5 wt% NPC-MoS 2 @Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 p-n heterojunction exhibits distinctly enhanced photocatalytic activity under light illumination due to the increased light absorption capability and more effective charge transfer efficiency. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical analysis imply that a built-in electric field on interfaces is created to form p-n heterojunctions which drive the photoinduced electrons transferred from NPC-MoS 2 to Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 . Finally, the type-II charge transfer mechanism is proposed which promotes separation of the charges and provides suitable conduction band to reduce CO 2 much efficiently. In a word, this work provides a new insight into the establishment of hierarchical p-n heterostructures for photocatalysis .

Developing efficient materials for the extraction of gold(I) was pivotal for application of ammoniacal thiosulfate leaching technology. Mn-doped molybdenum disulfide (Mn-MoS2) spheres were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal route for photocatalytic reduction of the gold(I) thiosulfate complex ([Au(S2O3)2]3–) in this work. The experimental results exhibited that [Au(S2O3)2]3– was efficiently recycled in the form of gold nanoparticles by Mn-MoS2. The reduction capacity (936.9 mg/g) and rate (2.74 mg/(g min) in 300 min) was 1.5 and 2.72 times higher than that of MoS2, respectively. The inside photocatalytic reduction mechanism was studied by combining an experimental and first-principles approach. Outstanding reduction performance of [Au(S2O3)2]3– was attributed to the enhanced transfer of photoinduced electrons after Mn doping. In addition, S atoms in the Mn-S bond could well interact with Au(I), which slightly promoted the adsorption of [Au(S2O3)2]3– on Mn-MoS2. The discovery provided a promising strategy for the efficient extraction of gold(I) from thiosulfate leaching solutions.

Developing a low-cost and transparent counter electrode (CE) for a self-powered electrochromic device (SP-ECD) can address the requirements of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). Herein, a new partly covered poly(3,4-(2,2-dimethylpropylenedioxy) thiophene) (PProDOT-Me 2 ) on MoS 2 nanosheets CE is developed for replacing an expensive Pt CE and achieving high-performance SP-ECD. The device consists of the proposed CE, an electrolyte containing Br − /Br 3 − redox pair, and a working electrode made with a dye-sensitized TiO 2 photoanode integrated with PProDOT-Me 2 . ECD changes its color between deep blue and colorless by varying the illuminated light on and off. Measurements reveal that the ECD achieves a transmittance modulation of 46% at 580 nm with cycling stability over 500 cycles (4% contrast attenuation) that are about five times stable than that based on Pt or MoS 2 CE. In addition, the switching speed between colored and bleached states is fast under a light on and off, with a coloration time of 2.1 s and a bleaching time of 1.5 s. These characteristics result from the unique design of CE and can be beneficial in accelerating the electrochromic process and enhancing the self-powered performance for good cycling stability. This study reveals a new approach to prepare good CE for efficient SP-ECD in BIPVs.

A novel pomegranate-like Zn x Cd 1-x S@MoS 2 core@shell nano-heterostructure was synthesized by using a facile one-pot solvothermal approach. In this architecture, the MoS 2 nanosheet and well-dispersed Zn x Cd 1-x S nanospheres serve as peel and seeds, respectively. While maintaining the advantages of nanoscale materials, such as high ratio of surface to volume and a relatively short charge transportation path, this unique structure also provides some additional positive features for H 2 generation application: (1) the intimate contact of MoS 2 and Zn x Cd 1-x S contributes to the well-defined heterostructure formation and thus enhances H 2 generation efficiency; (2) the MoS 2 nanosheets with amorphous-like structures providing numerous active sites for H 2 generation; (3) the multiple pore nano structure promotes mass transfer and allows the active site through exposure; (4) the coated MoS 2 with superior chemical stability protects Zn x Cd 1-x S from photocorrosion and disaggregation. With those advantages, the Zn x Cd 1-x S@MoS 2 heterostructure exhibits a high photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 28.22 mmol g −1 h −1 far exceeding that of pristine Zn x Cd 1-x S by a factor of more than 56 and maintains long term stability with no obvious active deterioration in 24 h performance evaluation. Moreover, the one-pot synthesis of this heterostructure significantly saves time and energy, rendering it cost-efficiency. The demonstrated strategy here could have great significance in the design and fabrication of the low-cost and high-efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts .

Electrode design and fabrication are of major importance for hydrogen evolution reaction applications, as far as high-efficiency and low-cost production of hydrogen are concerned. This paper reports on a titanium-nitride-ceramic-membrane electrode modified by MoS2 nanoflakes. Porous TiN-ceramic membranes were fabricated by phase-inversion tape-casting, followed by pressureless sintering. The as-prepared TiN membranes contained straight finger-like pores with an average diameter of 80 μm and smaller pores with an average diameter of 1–3 μm. Then, MoS2 nanoflakes were perpendicularly, densely, and uniformly grown on the surface of the TiN grains through the one-pot hydrothermal method. The optimized MoS2/TiN membrane electrode displayed a low overpotential of 113 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 78 mV dec–1, a small charge transfer resistance of 1.44 Ω, and a high double-layer capacitance of 504 mF cm–2. It also exhibited excellent stability with slight degradation after 80 h testing at an overpotential of 150 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4. The high conductivity of the TiN substrate, the similar chemical bonds, which favored the rapid electron transfer between MoS2 and TiN, the abundant exposed active sites of MoS2 nanoflakes, and the unique dual-pore structure resulted in the above superior electrocatalytic activity. The proposed successful utilization of conventional ceramic-membrane technology to prepare electrocatalysts based on membrane electrodes has potential for large-scale application in industrial hydrogen production.

A hierarchical hollow Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 architecture was successfully prepared using a Ni/Co Prussian Blue analogue as the precursor followed by the solvothermal-assisted insertion of MoS42− and extraction of [Co(CN)6]3− at 200 °C for 32 h. The obtained Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 composite exhibited a hollow microcubic structural characteristic, and the morphology, structure, and chemical compositions were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 composite used as an electrode material featured excellent glucose sensing activity and a high sensitivity of 2546 μA mM−1 cm−2 with a relatively low detection limit of 0.69 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the Ni/Co-codoped MoS2 composite showed good anti-interference sensing performance in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), lysine (Lys), cysteine (Cys), urea, H2O2, KCl, and other interferents. These experimental results revealed that the composite is a promising electrode material for enzyme-free glucose sensing, and the feasible synthetic strategy may provide an effective and controlled route to prepare other multi-metal substituted sulfide-based hierarchical structures with high electrochemical sensing performance.

To tackle the devastating microbial infections for the public health, a continuous search for effective and safe nanobiocides based on their prominent nanoscale effects has been extensively explored during past decades. In this study, a green electrolysis method was employed to synthesize silver-doped molybdenum sulfide (Ag@MoS 2 ) composite materials. The obtained nanocomposites exhibited a sheet-like structure with a large specific surface area, which contributed to the efficient loading and refined distribution of silver nanoparticles. G − E. coli and G + S. aureus were used as model bacteria for the antibacterial test, which revealed enhanced antibacterial activity of produced nanocomposites with an identified destructive effect on preformed biofilms. It was found that within 72 hour incubation, 20 μg mL −1 Ag@MoS 2 was sufficient to inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus without visible colony formation, pointing to a desirable long-term antibacterial activity. Further a mechanistic antibiosis study of Ag@MoS 2 indicated the involvement of a generation of reactive oxygen species. Notably, owing to the well-distributed silver nanoparticles on the nontoxic MoS 2 nanosheet, the cytotoxicity evaluation results revealed that produced nanocomposites exhibited negligible toxicity to mammalian cells, and thereby held promising potential for biomedical applications.

Currently, Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has been regarded as an emerging organic pollutant and efficient TBBPA elimination technology has been attracting increasing attention. In this work, a novel photocatalyst, MoS 2 /SnIn 4 S 8 , was synthesized through hydrothermal method by introducing few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets and then employed to establish an integrated photocatalytic reduction/oxidation system for the remediation of TBBPA under visible light. The characterization results demonstrated that the few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets were well combined with SnIn 4 S 8 and significantly lowered the recombination rate of the photo-induced electron and holes, leading to outstanding photocatalytic performance of MoS 2 /SnIn 4 S 8 composite. Besides, the MoS 2 /SnIn 4 S 8 composite also exhibited excellent reusability (over 10 runs) and stability. The TBBPA degradation experiments showed that the integrated photocatalytic reduction/oxidation system was able to completely degrade TBBPA and mineralize its byproducts (60.2 ± 2.9%). In the photocatalytic reduction, due to the cleavage of C–Br bonds by photo-induced electrons, TBBPA underwent stepwise debromination and finally transferred into BPA in 6 h. In the following photocatalytic oxidation, under the attack of reactive oxygen species ( 1 O 2 , h + , OH and O 2 − ), BPA was first decomposed into aromatic products (such as phenol, benzoic acid , p -hydroxybenzyl alcohol and so on) via C–C bond cracking and hydroxylation, and then further oxidized into organic acids like maleic acid and muconic acid through ring-opening, and finally mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O. What was noteworthy was that the final effluent from the photocatalytic reduction/oxidation system showed no toxicity to the luminescent bacteria.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been regarded as a promising anode material in the field of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), with the advantages of high theoretical capacity and large interlayer spacings. Unfortunately, its intrinsic poor electrical conductivity and large volume changes during the sodiation/desodiation reactions still limit its practical application. To deal with this shortcoming, we built MoS2 nanosheet/multiwalled carbon nanotube (denoted as MoS2-MSs/MWCNTs) composites with a three-dimensional (3D) micro-spherical structure, assembled in situ from MoS2 nanosheets. These nanosheets are connected to each other by the MWCNTs network, which provides a highly conductive pathway for electrons/ions through interparticle and intraparticle interfaces, accelerating charge transfer and ion diffusion capabilities. More importantly, the carbon network can boost electrical conductivity and relieve structural strain. Consequently, the as-prepared MoS2-MSs/MWCNTs composite presents a high reversible specific capacity of 519 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 94.4% and excellent rate performance (227 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1). Outstanding cycling stability was also achieved (327.1 mA h g−1 over 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1) and was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Our findings provide a simple and effective strategy to explore anode materials with advanced sodium storage properties.

A novel fibrous BiVO 4 /Bi 2 S 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction is facilely constructed by simple electrospinning and hydrothermal processes. Bi 2 S 3 was formed concurrently along with the hydrothermal synthesis of MoS 2 on to the porous structure of BiVO 4 fibers. The BiVO 4 /Bi 2 S 3 /MoS 2 (BBM) heterojunction is organized with MoS 2 nanosheets of several layers in thickness encapsulating both on the Bi 2 S 3 nanorod around 40 nm in diameter and fibrous BiVO 4 template. The BiVO 4 /Bi 2 S 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction shows significant enhancement of visible light absorption in the region of 500–800 nm and photocurrent of 3 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 . By adjusting the precursor concentration of MoS 2 , the optimized BBM-2 sample presents 4.9 and 9.5 times higher of the photodegradation efficiency and apparent reaction rate constant respectively, than that of pure BiVO 4 fibers after 120 min under visible light irradiation . The present work will provide a new strategy to the design of Bi-contained nanofibrous heterojunctions with high photocatalytic activity for the applications in energy storage and conversion.

Hydrogen, as the one of clean energy source, has the advantages of high energy density and carbon-free emission. Water electrolysis is one of the most promising ways to generate hydrogen, but the rather high energy required seriously hinders its widespread applications yet. In this study, we report an alkaline electrolyzer to implement energy-saving H 2 generation by coupling cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with anodic glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) other than oxygen evolution reaction , in which nickel-doped MoS 2 nanoparticles (Ni–MoS 2 NPs) has been developed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for HER and GOR. The electrolyzer only requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V to reach an electrolysis current density of 10 mA cm −2 , about 270 mV lower than the corresponding value in the traditional electrolyzer. Electrolytic H 2 generation with the assistance of biomass derived materials may open a new way for the future sustainable development.

In this work, by functionalizing MoS2 quantum dot with 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid, a novel multifunctional quantum dot (denoted as B-MoS2 QD) was obtained and used successfully for a fluorescence nanoprobe for detecting o-dihydroxybenzene (o-DHB). Transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectrum, UV-vis spectrum and fluorescence lifetime were used to investigate the prepared nanoprobe. The results show that the B-MoS2 QD nanoprobe can exhibit strong fluorescence and excellent light fastness owing to the coupled effect from the MoS2 QDs and boronic acid; interestingly, the vicinal diols structure from its surface can bridge covalently with o-DHB, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of B-MoS2 QDs and selective recognition toward o-DHB. With the increasing of o-DHB concentration, the nanoprobe fluorescence would gradually decrease. By measuring the fluorescence intensity of B-MoS2 QDs, a wide linear range from 0.1 to 200.0 μM with a low detection limit of 0.025 μM was obtained for o-DHB analysis; meanwhile, this fluorescence nanoprobe possesses excellent selectivity for the selective detection of o-DHB from its analogues.
