The transgenerational impacts of pesticide mixture on Daphnia magna ( D. magna ) following long-term exposure, particularly regarding transcriptomic effects, remain poorly understood. We analyzed 470 irrigation water samples from various Chinese provinces. Imidacloprid (IMI, 71.1 %), clothianidin (CLO, 60.43 %), and tebuconazole (TEB, 64.68 %) were the most frequently detected pesticides, with nearly 50 % of samples showing mixtures of TEB with IMI or CLO. D. magna were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.89–1.62 μg/L) over 12 generations. Key effects included reduced fecundity, delayed development, and smaller body size, with these impacts exacerbating across generations. A Leslie matrix model revealed declines in population size, intrinsic rates of increase, and age structure. Notably, mixed pesticide exposures induced specific pathways related to oocyte meiosis, resulting in greater toxicity than single exposures. Additionally, disrupted lipid metabolism and feeding behaviors were linked to insufficient energy for growth and reproduction, affecting ovarian development. These findings highlight the ecological risks of long-term pesticide exposure and offer insights for mitigation strategies in aquatic ecosystems.

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have evloved into versatile visible light photocatalysts. Narrowing the bandgaps of CMPs could capture more visible light without shifting the suitable position with an established electron acceptor like thiazolo[5,4- d ]thiazole (TzTz). Here, benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Bz-CHO) and benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b':5,6-b'']trithiophene-2,5,8-tricarbaldehyde (BTT-CHO) are adopted to undergo condensation with dithiooxamide, preparing two TzTz-bridged CMPs, namely TzTz-Bz and TzTz-BTT. Thereby, TzTz-BTT could capture visible light more substantially than TzTz-Bz due to narrowing the bandgap. Endowed by TzTz, both TzTz-BTT and TzTz-Bz possess similar positions for the activation of O 2 and can drive the subsequent formation of imines. However, TzTz-BTT, with a narrower bandgap, could capture more green light to drive the electron and proton transfer for the selective formation of imines with higher conversions than TzTz-Bz. This work suggests that CMPs can be equipped with extensive visible light absorption for photocatalytic selective oxidations.

The large-scale implementation of direct ethylene glycol fuel cells (DEGFCs) relies on the design of catalysts that possess exceptional activity, durability, and efficient C–C bond breaking ability. However, Pt and Pd-based nanomaterials continue to face challenges of low selectivity and slow reaction kinetics in driving the complete oxidation of ethylene glycol to CO 2 . In this work, a facile one-pot reduction method is reported for controllable synthesis of PtBi nanodendrites (PtBi-NDs) composed of ultrathin bimetallene subunits. In alkaline media, the composition optimized PtBi-NDs demonstrate outstanding activity and strong resistance to CO poisoning during the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR). The PtBi-NDs show 5.8-fold higher mass activity, enhanced stability, and superior C1 selectivity relative to commercial Pt nanoparticles (Pt c-NCs). Most strikingly, PtBi-NDs deliver a higher power density (8.3 mW cm –2 ) than Pt c-NCs in DEGFCs. The theoretical analysis and experimental measurements explain that the introduction of Bi element into Pt induces d–p orbital hybridization and promotes electron transfer from Bi to Pt, thereby facilitating C–C bond cleavage and boosting EGOR kinetics. This work establishes an effective strategy for constructing Pt-based ultrathin bimetallenes and offers fundamental insights into boosting EGOR performance via d-p orbital hybridization.

In this study, a composite film with dual antioxidant and antibacterial properties was prepared by combining 2% chitosan and 7% gelatin (2:1, w:w), with D-carvone (0–4%) as the primary active component. The effect of D-carvone content on the performance of the composite films was systematically investigated. The results showed that adding 1% D-carvone increased the water contact angle by 28%, increased the elongation at break by 35%, and decreased the WVTR by 18%. FTIR and SEM confirmed that ≤2% D-carvone uniformly bonded with the substrate through hydrogen bonds, and the film was dense and non-porous. In addition, the DPPH scavenging rate of the 1–2% D-carvone composite film increased to about 30–40%, and the ABTS+scavenging rate increased to about 35–40%; the antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus increased by more than 70%. However, when the addition amount was too high (exceeding 2%), the composite film became agglomerated, microporous, and phase-separated, affecting the film performance, and due to its own taste, it reduced the sensory quality of the noodles. Comprehensively, the composites showed better performance when the content of D-carvone was 1–2% and also the best effect for freshness preservation in Xinjiang ramen. This study provides a broad application prospect for natural terpene compound-based composite films in the field of high-moisture, multi-fat food preservation, and provides a theoretical basis and practical guidance for the development of efficient and safe food packaging materials. In the future, the composite film can be further optimized, and the effect of flavor can be further explored to meet the needs of different food preservation methods.

Pyrolysis is a promising thermochemical conversion technology, which can convert biomass and cellulose into value-added products. Herein, a new approach of oxalic acid-assisted staged fast pyrolysis (OASFP) of cellulose was developed, achieving the coproduction of 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-α-d-glucopyranose (DGP), furfural (FF), and formic acid (FA) in separated pyrolysis stages. The lab-scale tests demonstrated that a selectivity of 71.6% and a yield of 31.5 wt % for FA in the aqueous phase, as well as a selectivity of 55.6% and a yield of 1.2 wt % for FF in the organic phase, were achieved in the primary pyrolysis stage under the optimized conditions (primary pyrolysis temperature of 220 °C and cellulose-to-oxalic acid (OA) ratio of 1:3). During the subsequent secondary pyrolysis process at 400 °C, the decomposition of the solid residue achieved a yield of 7.2 wt % and a selectivity of 32.7% for DGP. The interaction between OA and cellulose during the primary pyrolysis stage was essential for DGP generation. The formation mechanism of major products and the role of OA were revealed based on experiments and density functional theory calculations. In total, the OASFP of cellulose offers new possibilities and opportunities for biomass utilization.

The development of highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes under mild condition is of great importance for both theoretical and industrial applications, which can efficiently reduce energy consumption and environmental pollution. In this work, we found that the prepared CoCu nano-alloy catalyst after exposed in the air over 24 h (named Co 1 Cu 1 /C) exhibited a dramatically improved catalytic performance (yield from trace to >99%) for quinoline hydrogenation under mild reaction conditions (60 °C, 3 MPa H 2 ). According to the characterization, the catalyst Co 1 Cu 1 /C exhibited the strong interaction between Co and Cu. Meanwhile, it was endowed with a stable partial oxidation surface. The unsaturated oxygen coordinated surface of Co 1 Cu 1 /C presented a moderate binding for quinoline and 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroquinoline, which could efficiently avoid the deactivation of catalyst and favor the hydrogenation kinetics. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled with X ray-based structural analyses suggested that the unsaturated oxygen coordinated surface could lower the diffusion energy of the active hydrogen species and the reaction barrier for quinoline hydrogenation which resulted from the d - p orbital electron coupling. This work revealed that the catalytic performance of nano-alloy catalysts might not only be ascribed to the interaction between metals, while the unsaturated oxygen coordination of metallic surfaces played an important role.

In conjunction with the pressing global issue of climate change and the associated concern over global warming, increasing interest has emerged in the exploration of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a resource for the generation of a diverse array of products intended to serve societal needs. This study presents the development of an ATP-free and NAD-balanced in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystem (ivSEB), which comprises only five cascade thermophilic enzymes, designed for the synthesis of L-malate through CO2 fixation powered by the utilization of D-glucose as a substrate. This designed ivSEB yields two moles of L-malate from one mole of D-glucose and two moles of CO2. Through meticulous refinement of reaction conditions and enzyme loading amounts, this ivSEB has demonstrated its capability to produce 6.85 mM of L-malate via CO2 fixation from an initial 5 mM of D-glucose with a molar product yield of 68.5%, and 2.45 mM of L-lactate as a byproduct. In the pursuit of assessing the industrial feasibility of this ivSEB, the study further subjected the system to the utilization of a high concentration (45.70 mM) of D-glucose. Although this endeavor necessitates additional optimization for enhanced efficiency, the present findings herald the emergence of an alternative avenue for the sustainable production of L-malate through CO2 fixation, thus bearing substantial promise for addressing ecological and industrial imperatives.

Peri-implantitis, caused by bacterial biofilm on dental implants, leads to bone loss and tissue inflammation, ultimately causing oral health decline. Traditional methods to remove biofilm are ineffective in promoting reosseointegration on implant surfaces. This phenomenon can be attributed to two factors: incomplete removal of biofilm from hard-to-reach areas and alterations in the physicochemical properties of implant surfaces caused by decontamination procedures. To address this problem, we developed D-arginine-loaded chitooligosaccharide-capped pH-responsive mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Dar@MSN-COS) for improving the efficacy of decontamination of Water Jet (WJ). Dar@MSN-COS particles exhibit a targeted approach towards the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in order to disrupt the biofilm, and possess the capability to infiltrate confined areas between implant screws. Following this, the WJ treatment effectively removed residual biofilm and demonstrated improved cleaning efficacy. Furthermore, the decontamination of the Dar@MSN-COS combination with WJ promotes effective cell cytocompatibility on the titanium surface. The results of mechanistic experiments indicate that Dar@MSN-COS may act on biofilms by releasing a significant quantity of reactive oxygen species (ROS), suggesting it as a key contributing factor. In summary, our novel therapeutic protocol shows promise as an alternative solution for addressing the clinically complex aspects of peri-implantitis.

In this article, poly(ethylene glycol)-poly( d -lactide) (PEG-PDLA) block copolymers with different PEG chain lengths were synthesized and melt-mixed with poly( l -lactide) (PLLA) and rubber nanoparticles. The role of PEG-PDLA block copolymers in tailoring the microstructures and performances of PLLA/rubber blend were investigated in detail. It was found that high contents of stereocomplex (SC) crystals were generated in PLLA/rubber/PEG-PDLA copolymer blends, which induced rubber nanoparticles to agglomerate and form network-like structures. The size of rubber aggregates and continuity of rubber network-like structures first increased and then declined significantly as the PEG chain length increased. Resultingly, the impact toughness of PLLA/rubber/PEG-PDLA copolymer blends first remarkably increased to 74.1 kJ/m 2 and then decreased to 30.6 kJ/m 2 . Meanwhile, the elongation at break increased with increasing PEG chain length and little loss of tensile strength happened, revealing good stiffness-toughness balance performances of PLLA/rubber/PEG-PDLA copolymer blends. Moreover, the matrix crystallization rate of PLLA/rubber/PEG-PDLA copolymer blends could be greatly increased by increasing PEG chain length and the PLLA/rubber/PEG-PDLA copolymer blends exhibited much higher Vicat softening temperatures than PLLA/rubber blend, which confirmed the excellent heat resistance of PLLA/rubber/PEG-PDLA copolymer blends. These interesting findings suggested that PEG-PDLA block copolymers were highly conducive to prepare PLLA materials with outstanding comprehensive performances.

In this study, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was employed to augment the array of chiral recognition sites, thereby enhancing the affinity of GQDs/β-CD composite for imprinting molecules and realizing heightened chiral selectivity. The incorporation of GQDs/β-CD into the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), synergizing with the host-guest inclusion properties of β-CD and the abundant carboxyl groups of GQDs, enhanced the chiral recognition capacity of MIPs materials. Consequently, a novel MIPs/(GQDs/β-CD) sensor with chiral recognition capabilities tailored for D-carnitine was successfully fabricated. The binding mechanism between GQDs/β-CD and D-carnitine was elucidated via Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The variation in the response signal (ΔI) of the probe molecule exhibited a linear correlation with the logarithm of D-carnitine concentration (lgC) in the range of 1.0 × 10−12mol/L to 1.0 × 10−9mol/L, and the detection limit (3δ/S) was calculated as 2.35 × 10−13mol/L. These results underscore a 7.15-fold enhancement in the selectivity of MIPs/(GQDs/β-CD) sensor for D-carnitine recognition. Moreover, the sensor presented commendable efficacy in real-world scenarios, yielding recovery rates ranging from 98.5% to 103.0% during the determination of D-carnitine content in real samples.

Nonradicals relying on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation face inherent kinetic and thermodynamic limitations in pollutant mineralization. This is overcome using asymmetric iron single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) with Sabatier-adjusted d -band centers that establish a synergistic nonradical network of pathways, achieving exceptional mineralization (≈85%) with only one-tenth conventional PMS dosage. Direct coordination of high-loading Fe (≈10 wt.%) with controllable p -block elements (S, P, B) simultaneously facilitates electron-transfer pathways and selective generation of nonradicals ( 1 O 2 , Fe IV = O). Compared to symmetric Fe 1 -N 4 , they enhance pollutant removal and mineralization by 4.2-fold and 6.3-fold, respectively. Atomic-resolution characterization and theory reveal that the dopant's electronegativity governs the electronic perturbations of the Fe center, dictating PMS adsorption. Pollutant-specific charge transfer and adsorption affinity critically determine nonradical activity. The asymmetric Fe SACs exhibit excellent stability and applicability in complex matrices and continuous-flow wastewater treatment. This work provides a transformative strategy to overcome fundamental limitations in advanced oxidation processes and a design framework for sustainable environmental technologies.

Diallyl sulfide (DAS) is an effective bioactive organosulfur compound extracted from garlic. This study aimed to explore whether the protective effect of DAS on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/ d -galactosamine ( d -GalN) induced acute liver injury was associated with the regulation of Kupffer cell (KC) activation. The results indicated that DAS administration protected mice from LPS/D-GalN-induced histopathological damage and serum aminotransferase elevation and also showed more pronounced beneficial effects than GdCl 3 administration. The F4/80 + or CD11b + KC immunohistochemistry results showed that DAS administration suppressed LPS/D-GalN-induced KC activation. DAS administration also suppressed LPS/D-GalN-triggered production of TNF-α, IL-1β, MCP-1 and NO in the liver or serum, which was in line with the mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, MCP-1 and iNOS in the liver. Taken together, these findings reveal that the protective effects of DAS on LPS/D-GalN-induced acute liver injury may be achieved by inhibiting the activation of KC, thereby suppressing the secretion of various proinflammatory mediators.
