Tailoring double-layered fibrous mat of modified polypropylene/cotton fabric for the function of directional moisture transport

Jinhao Xu,Binjie Xin,Chun Wang,Yuansheng Zheng,Chuoming Chen,Mengjuan Zhou,Xu Tian,Xuanxuan Du

It has been widely acknowledged that the moisture (sweat) management in the textile is a crucial performance to adjust human comfort. Herein, a double-layered fibrous mat of modified polypropylene (PP)/cotton fabric for the function of directional moisture transport was reported. The PP fibers were deposited on the surface of cotton fabric via melt-electrospinning to form as-prepared fibrous mat, wherein the PP mat was used as the inner layer and the cotton fabric acted as the outer layer. The as-prepared fibrous mats were modified by means of plasma treatment and grafting hydrophilic groups for the sake of converting natural hydrophobicity of PP fibers into moderate wettability. After these treatments, sweat can be transport from the inner layer to the out layer rather than accumulating on the surface of the PP layer, while the capillary action of the cotton fabric on sweat was further enhanced. The directional moisture transport was systematically characterized by a moisture management tester and the experimental results exhibited remarkable accumulative one-way transport index (1,103.1%), outstanding overall moisture management capacity (0.91) within 120 s and high water vapor transport rate (11.3 kg d −1 m −2 ). Besides, the obtained fibrous mat also provided decent wearability, showing the great application prospects in the moisture (sweat) management of textiles.

Incorporation of silica network and modified graphene oxide into epoxy resin for improving thermal and anticorrosion properties

Yankun Xie,Weiqu Liu,Liyan Liang,Chunhua Liu,Maiping Yang,Hongyi Shi,Shuo Wang,Fengyuan Zhang

In this study, the silica network and functionalized graphene oxide (GO) were incorporated into the epoxy coating systems, which was aimed to improve the thermal property and corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings. First, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) oligomers and epoxy hybrid was fabricated through sol–gel method. Then the (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) modified graphene oxide (FGO) was added into the epoxy hybrid composite to obtain anticorrosion coatings. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectrum were conducted to evaluate the structural information of GO and APTES modified GO nanosheets. The results indicated that the APTES successfully grafted onto the surface of GO sheets. Besides, TGA curves, electrochemical measurements and salt spray test were also carried out to characterize the thermal performance and corrosion resistance of GO based epoxy coatings. The TGA results revealed that the thermal performance of epoxy coating containing silica network and FGO nanofiller (ES/FGO) was significantly strengthened compared to pure epoxy. The initial degradation temperature of epoxy coating was increased from 300 to 343.7°C after incorporation of silica component and FGO. The EIS measurements demonstrated that the impedance modulus of ES/FGO was significantly higher than neat epoxy, which indicated that the corrosion resistance of epoxy was substantially strengthened after introduction of silica component and FGO. The corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency of epoxy composite coatings were also shifted from 1.237 × 10 −7 mm/year and 76.6% (for neat epoxy) to 1.870 × 10 −9 mm/year and 99.6% (for ES/FGO), respectively. The salt spray test also revealed that the silica and FGO can improve the corrosion resistance of epoxy coating. Additionally, the dispersion of GO sheets was also enhanced after the modification of APTES siloxane.

Magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles grafted by DOPO and its flame retardancy in ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers

Tingting Liu,Feng Wang,Gen Li,Peng Liu,Chong Gao,Yanfen Ding,Shimin Zhang,Xiangrong Kong,Mingshu Yang

Magnesium hydroxide (MH) nanoparticles have been considered as an excellent nonhalogen flame-retardant. However, the drawbacks of easy aggregation and relatively low flame retardancy limit their applications in polymer materials. In this research, MH nanoparticles were successfully grafted by 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) through the bridge of vinyl silane coupling agents (WD70). The grafted MH nanoparticles (MH-WD70-DOPO) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. MH-WD70-DOPO nanoparticles were incorporated into ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) matrix by melt blending method. The results indicated that MH-WD70-DOPO nanoparticles were much homogenously dispersed in EVA matrix than unmodified MH particles. EVA/MH-WD70-DOPO nanocomposites with 51.32 wt% loading showed higher flame retardancy, better mechanical and processing properties compared with EVA/MH-WD70 sample. These findings could provide a novel method to enhance the flame-retardant efficiency of inorganic hydroxide flame retardants, while keeping good mechanical and processing properties of polymer materials.

High-performance epoxy nanocomposites via constructing rigid structured interphase with epoxy-rich graphene oxide

Xueqin Zhang,Zhengguang Heng,Lu Shen,Mei Liang,Zhong Zeng,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

Epoxy resins, as the most important thermosetting matrix of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, are widely used in the structural field, but the highly intrinsic brittleness of epoxy resins greatly limits their application. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new method to prepare high-performance epoxy composites. In this research, GO riched with rigid short-chain structure epoxy group on its surface was synthesized by chemically grafting dopamine, hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and glycidol successively. Then the modified nanofillers were incorporated into the epoxy matrix to prepare high-performance nanocomposites. The effect of epoxy-rich GO nanosheets as fillers on mechanical properties of aerospace grade epoxy was studied. The results revealed that the epoxy-rich GO could effectively optimize the performance of epoxy resins owing to forming the rigid structured interphase. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the nanocomposites were up to 113 MPa and 7.6% with 0.075 wt% additives, respectively, which greatly surpassed the value reported by the limited researches on strengthening epoxy with GO and its derivate nanofillers. Therefore, instructive idea and effective method were provided to obtain high-performance polymer nanocomposite matrix in this study.

Study of polymerization kinetics and copolymerization behavior of N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]methacryamide and cationic surfmers

Yifan Wang,Ming Duan,Xiujun Wang,Bo Jing,Fei Wang,Yan Xiong,Shenwen Fang

Gas flotation is one of the important technologies for oily wastewater treatment and the surface-active polymer is an important kind of developing flotation agents. In this article, the flotation performance, polymerization kinetics, and copolymerization behavior of surface-active copolymer of N -[3-(dimethylamino) propyl] methacrylamide (DMAPMA) and dodecyl dimethyl propenyl ammonium chloride (C 12 DM) and copolymer of DMAPMA and decyl dimethyl vinylbenzyl ammonium chloride(C 10 MVBA) were investigated. The flotation experiment showed that both copolymers had an oil removal of 97% at the concentration of 30 mg/L. The result of polymerization kinetics showed that the polymerization initiation rate was influenced by the monomer concentration and the polymerization termination was dominated by bimolecular termination and accompanied by unimolecular termination. The activation energy of DMAPMA-C 12 DM copolymerization (89.64 kJ/mol) was smaller than that of DMAPMA-C 10 MVBA (91.65 kJ/mol) copolymerization. The reactivity ratios of DMAPMA and C 12 DM were 0.46 and 15.52, respectively, as well as the reactivity ratios of DMAPMA and C 10 MVBA were 1.19 and 35.77, respectively. These results are meaningful for the oily wastewater flotation and the copolymerization mechanism of DMAPMA-based copolymer.

Effect of hybrid polysphosphazene coating treatment on carbon fibers on the interfacial properties of CF/PA6 composites

Xiang Chen,Haibing Xu,Dong Liu,Chun Yan,Youqiang Yao,Yingdan Zhu

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composite has an extensive application. However, the performances of CF/PA6 composite are constrained by the poor interfacial adhesion between CF and PA6 matrix. In this article, in order to strengthen the interfacial adhesion of CF/PA6 composite, a layer of poly(cyclotriphosphazene- co -4,4′-sulfonyldiphonel) (PZS) hybrid coating with plenty of PZS microspheres (PZSMS) was successfully introduced onto CF surface through facile in situ polymerization. After surface modification, the surface morphologies and the surface chemical structures of fibers changed distinctly. On one hand, the PZSMS provided more contact points and increased mechanical interlocking between CF and PA6 matrix. On the other hand, numerous hydrogen bonds between CF and PA6 were formed due to a great amount of unique polar groups on modified CF surface. Consequently, in comparison with untreated CF, the interfacial shear strength of CF-PZSMS/PA6 composites was improved from 37.68 ± 3.16 to 53.79 ± 3.38 MPa, by 42.75 ± 3.02%. The results indicated that PZS hybrid coating on fiber surface effectively improved the interfacial adhesion of CF/PA6 composites, and the stronger hydrogen bonding and the enhanced mechanical interlocking synergistically played a major role in such significant improvements.

A hybrid system of hydrogel/frog egg-like microspheres accelerates wound healing via sustained delivery of RCSPs

Xuan Ji,Guomin Liu,Yutao Cui,Wenyuan Jia,Yungang Luo,Zhiqiang Cheng

In this article, a hybrid system of hydrogel/frog egg-like microspheres (H-FMS) formed by the combination of coaxial electrostatic spraying and freeze-drying was introduced for enhancing wound healing efficiency through the sustained release of Rana chensinensis skin peptides (RCSPs). The porous PVA/gelatin hydrogel were obtained and frog egg-like microspheres (FMS) of sodium alginate (SA), shaping uniform and smooth, were embedded into hydrogel. Based on PVA/gelatin hydrogel, the FMS addition increased the water absorption of hydrogel to 1,105%. RCSPs were more effectively encapsulated into FMS than solid microspheres (MS). Not only does the H-FMS act as good “depots” for sustained release of RCSPs over 9 days, without exhibiting obvious burst release, but also show good biocompatibility in vitro. In vivo studies on wound healing as well as the histology of fibroblasts, re-epithelialization, inflammation, and hair follicles indicated that the structure of H-FMS released RCSPs continuously and promoted wound healing in rats significantly.

Preparation of tetrafluoro-λ6-sulfanyl bridged-bonding perfluoroalkyl styrene and its emulsion copolymerization with acrylate monomers for cotton fabrics finishing

Kexin Liu,Lei Chen,Zhanxiong Li

4-(Perfluorobutyl)styrene, 4-(Perfluorohexyl)styrene, 4 - [Perfluorobutyl(tetrafluoro-λ 6 -sulfanyl)]styrene (C 4 F 9  SF 4  styrene), and 4 - [Perfluorohexyl(tetrafluoro-λ 6 -sulfanyl)]styrene (C 6 F 13  SF 4  styrene) were prepared in two or three steps. The short-chain perfluoroalkyl groups are modified through the insertion of tetrafluoro-λ 6 -sulfanyl linked groups (  SF 4  ). The prepared perfluoroalkyl styrene acts as functional monomers to react with butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate for emulsion copolymerization to obtain side-chain fluoropolymers. The long-chain fluoropolymer formed in contrast to the tetrafluorosulfanyl (  SF 4  ) modified ones. The emulsions were applied on cotton fabrics to give hydrophobicity. The result showed that the fabrics treated with tetrafluorosulfanyl-modified fluoropolymers were more hydrophobic, indicating that the introduction of  SF 4  was beneficial to provide lower surface energy and obtain better water repellent performance. The water contact angles record the varying degrees of variation in polymer degradation under UV exposure. The result showed that, as the perfluoroalkyl is bonded by  SF 4  , when comparing with the carbon-chain perfluoroalkyl polymer, the tetrafluorosulfanyl-modified fluoropolymer is more degradable during UV irradiation.

Impact of inhibitor loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles on waterborne coating performance in various corrosive environments

Bruno Židov,Zhifeng Lin,Ivan Stojanović,Likun Xu

This article is a contribution to the development of the smart, self-healing solutions in the context of corrosion protection of metallic materials based on nanotechnology. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and loaded with two different corrosion inhibitors, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole and 8-hydroxyquinoline. Loaded particles were embedded in different concentrations in waterborne epoxy coating, and as such applied to low carbon steel substrates. A continuous immersion test in 3.5% NaCl solution, humidity chamber exposure, and salt spray exposure were performed. Successful synthesis of silica nanoparticles has been demonstrated using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterization techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the loading of inhibitors, while the quantity of loaded inhibitors was determined by thermogravimetric method. Anticorrosive performance of intact composite coatings was determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and open-circuit potential measurements. Adhesive properties were determined using the pull-off test (ISO 4624). Significant improvement in corrosion protection performance has been demonstrated for coatings containing inhibitor-loaded nanoparticles.

Morphology and mechanical behaviors of rigid organic particles reinforced polycarbonate

Yukai Su,Ting Sai,Shiya Ran,Zhengping Fang,Zhenghong Guo

For the purpose of promoting mechanical properties of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) reinforced by rigid organic styrene–acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) particles, styrene/acrylonitrile/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer (SAG) was synthesized and applied as compatibilizer for PC/SAN blends. It is found that the phase morphology of PC/SAN/SAG blends is closely related with their mechanical properties. Large continuously distributed SAN phase or spherical dispersed SAN particles with average diameter over 2 μm tend to trigger premature tensile failure of blends due to stress concentration. The incorporation of SAG can simultaneously reinforce and toughen PC/SAN blends by controlling the size and distribution of the dispersed SAN particles. For the blends with fixed PC/SAN ratio, the elongation at break and fracture energy are markedly improved when SAN domain size is reduced by adding appropriate amount of SAG. Typically, for blends with a PC/SAN ratio of 75/25, adding 3 wt% SAG will cause the average diameter of SAN particles to reduce from 2.35 ± 1.20 to 0.74 ± 0.25 μm, meanwhile up to 95% increment in elongation at break and 115% increment in fracture energy is achieved.

Effect of injection molding on structure and properties of poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) and its nanocomposite with functionalized montmorillonite

Xiaoyan Li,Hui Yu,Xiong Kang,Gang Chen,Ming Zhu,Jianjun Xu

In this paper, the effects of injection molding on structure and properties of poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) (SEBS) and its nanocomposite with a functionalized montmorillonite (FMMT) were illustrated by comparison with the results of hot pressing. The injection-molded SEBS and its FMMT nanocomposite have a skin-core morphology with FMMT platelets more preferentially aligned along the sample plane, while hot-pressed samples not. The injection-molded samples also have a dense structure, and a less extent of microphase separation. In the injection molding process, the high shear flow coupled with solidification in presence of temperature gradient and high pressure in the closed cavity greatly affect the morphology and structure of the SEBS and its nanocomposites. The results also indicate attractive interaction between the soft segments of SEBS and the long alkyl silane chain grafted to FMMT, which allows FMMT to form a macroscopic network structure after the high-speed and high-pressure injection molding. The SEBS/FMMT-injected nanocomposite have the highest tensile strength and the best corrosion resistance, which can be attributed to the dense skin-core structure, stronger SEBS/FMMT interaction and the preferentially aligned FMMT platelets.

Investigation on two modification strategies for the reinforcement of biodegradable lignin/poly(lactic acid) blends

Xin Ge,Mingming Chang,Wei Jiang,Bangwen Zhang,Ruiguang Xing,Chaoke Bulin

In this work, biodegradable lignin/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends were prepared with melting compounding method. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and maleic anhydride (MA)/biphenyl peroxide (BPO) were used for the modification of the polymer blends, respectively. Structure of the polymer blends was characterized with Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical properties of the samples were determined with universal test machine and dynamic mechanical analysis. Thermal behaviors and thermal stability of the blends were all characterized with a thermal gravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry simultaneous thermal analyzer. Lignin reinforced the mechanical strength of the blends while the thermal stability was not improved. At low content, DCP and MA/BPO apparently enhanced the mechanical strength of lignin/PLA blends. However, excessive DCP led to decreased tensile strength and elongation at break. Both DCP and MA/BPO resulted in lower glass transition temperature and melting temperature of PLA in the blends, while the thermal stability of the polymer blends was poorer after modification.
