Jun Li,Xianling Yang,Pingcong Lv,Yuwei Zheng,Hongli Ou,Wanxia Wu,Xianggui Chen,Xiaoqi Yu

The high-value utilization of rice straw can not only unlock its potential economic and environmental benefits but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, significantly enhancing resource efficiency and promoting sustainable agricultural development. In this study, rice straw was used as a biomass-derived carbon source to synthesize biocompatible rice straw-derived carbon dots (H 2 O-CDs) via a green hydrothermal method. The fluorescent sensor constructed based on H 2 O-CDs offered the advantages of wide range (8–100 μM), high sensitivity (2.27 μM), and wide pH stability (2.0–8.0), making it suitable for detecting ferric ions within cells. Additionally, H 2 O-CDs were innovatively studied the antioxidant properties and had been proven excellent antioxidant enhancement potential by 2 times, suggesting their future practical application as a cigarette filter additive for the efficient removal over 40 % of harmful oxidizing free radicals in cigarette smoke. With their low cost and outstanding biocompatibility, H 2 O-CDs not only enable the high-value utilization of rice straw but also provide new insights and technical support for sustainable agricultural development.

A Novel Nanozyme for Sustainable Agriculture: Improving Wettability, Reducing Toxicity, and Enhancing Drought Resistance in Wheat and Rice

Qianwei Liang,Qing Tian,Yifei Tan,Tianzhen Jiang,Zhen Li,Jianguo Feng

Drought stress causes a significant accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in crops, inhibiting their growth and development and threatening food security. This study constructs cerium-based metal–organic frameworks (CeMs) encapsulated with polydopamine (PDA), effectively eliminating ROS (O2•–, H2O2, ·OH, DPPH·, and ABTS·+). Experiments showed that CeMs@PDA exhibits superior wettability and outstanding translocation capabilities in wheat and rice. Under drought conditions, CeMs@PDA (12.5 mg L–1, 100 mg L–1) significantly increased the vigor index (71.84%, 224.83%) of seeds (wheat, rice). The application of 25 and 100 mg L–1 CeMs@PDA significantly alleviated drought-induced growth inhibition in wheat and rice seedlings, respectively. The inhibition of stem and root growth decreased from 28.07% and 38.15% to 3.72% and 4.43% in wheat seedlings, and the inhibition declined from 25.33% and 30.83% to 2.89% and 5.30% in rice seedlings, respectively. In addition, CeMs@PDA significantly increased the level of antioxidant enzyme activities in wheat and rice and showed better biosafety. This study opens valuable pathways for sustainable agriculture under water-limited conditions.

Reyihanguli Alimu,Lanlan Dong,Patiguli Aihemaiti,Houfeng Jiang,Wurikaixi Aiyiti,Cijun Shuai

High-performance hydrogel biomaterials hold considerable promise for advanced wound care. However, the suboptimal mechanical properties of conventional hydrogel materials limit their practical application. In this study, Hyaluronic acid sodium salt (HA), xanthan gum (XG), and N-acryloyl-glycinamide (NAGA) hydrogels with porous structures were successfully fabricated using in-situ extrusion 3D printing technology, and a functionalization strategy involving tea polyphenol (TP) immersion was proposed to enhance material properties through additional hydrogen bonding. Systematic optimization of TP concentration and immersion time led to significant improvements in the resulting hydrogel: tensile strain increased from 95 % to 266 %, tensile stress improved 6.8-fold, and compressive stress increased 10-fold, with an elastic modulus of 0.68 MPa and toughness of 1.2 MJ/m³ . Furthermore, TP-treated hydrogels exhibited excellent biocompatibility and strong antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity. This study provides a simple yet effective secondary functionalization approach for enhancing the performance of 3D-printed hydrogels, offering a promising approach for multifunctional hydrogel biomaterials with integrated mechanical strength and biocompatibility. These findings open new avenues for advanced wound care systems and personalized medicine applications.

Carbon dots derivatizing from kanamycin with selective antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria and reactive oxygen species scavenging ability

Yuxi Xiao,Zhi Li,Yanping Yu,Yuchen Xie,Li Xu,Heng Zheng

Multidrug resistance in bacteria, especially in Gram-negative bacteria, has been an emerging issue for public health. The antibacterial agent with high antibacterial activity but avoiding drug resistance is highly desired. Carbon dots (CDs), as a new type of nano-antimicrobial agent, has attracted heightened attention due to their tunable physicochemical properties and high biocompatibility. In this study, we developed one kind of CDs, i.e., Kana-CDs, which was prepared based on the ternary carbon sources, including kanamycin, phenylboronic acid and citric acid. Kanamycin provided the antibacterial activity, while citric acid assisted the carbonization of kanamycin and stabilized the CDs, and phenylboronic acid endowed Kana-CDs with antibacterial selectivity. Kana-CDs behaved a good inhibitory effect on Gram-negative bacteria but not on Gram-positive ones. As well, Kana-CDs could inhibit/eradicate the biofilm formation, and eliminate excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). Kana-CDs succeeded in treating E. coli -infected wound animal without significant toxicity on major organs. Compared to kanamycin, Kana-CDs was more stable with selective antibacterial activity towards Gram-negative bacteria, along with extra ROS scavenging activity and better wound healing efficiency. This study provided a new strategy for nano-derivatization of antibiotics for reducing drug resistance and improving antibacterial efficacy.

High efficient aging of sweet red wine by ultrasonic treatment and acoustic radical chemistry explanation

Shiyao Wang,Xinyi Jia,Shuangli Xiong,Yisheng Chen

This study investigated the effects of low-power, low-temperature, and short-duration ultrasonic treatment on the quality of sweet red wine (SRW) to optimize flavor aging. Experiments were conducted by varying temperature (10–30 °C), duration (30–180 min), and power (100–300 W), with subsequent analysis of total sugar, acidity, tannins, esters, phenolic content, and antioxidant activity. Results demonstrated that low-power and low-temperature ultrasonic treatment effectively modulated the sugar-acid ratio in SRW. Tannin content exhibited minimal temperature dependence but was significantly influenced by ultrasonic power and duration, with duration exerting the strongest effect. Total ester content decreased with prolonged ultrasound exposure, though this reduction was mitigated under low-power conditions. Phenolic content declined as ultrasonic intensity increased. Sensory evaluation identified optimal aging parameters at 20 °C, 90 min, and 200 W. These results confirm that low-power, short-term ultrasound effectively ages sweet red wine while improving quality. This method offers a practical alternative to traditional aging, with potential benefits for wine production efficiency and quality control.

Kunying Yu,Bingyou Luo,Haiyu Yang,Jingjin He,Ziqi Zhu,Peiyuan Li,Haiyi Zhong

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for flexible wearable electronics; however, their facile fabrication remains challenging. This study presents an antifreeze, antibacterial, and conductive hydrogel constructed from biomacromolecules sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The hydrogel was synthesized via a simple one-pot method in an ethylene glycol/water (EG/H₂O) binary solvent system, incorporating lithium chloride (LiCl) and clove essential oil (CEO), followed by a single freeze-thaw cycle. The synergistic framework of CMC-Na and PVA endowed the hydrogel with robust mechanical flexibility and structural integrity. LiCl integration achieved high ionic conductivity (6.94Sm −1 ), while EG imparted exceptional freezing resistance, maintaining flexibility and conductivity at −50 °C. CEO provided potent antibacterial activity against common pathogens, significantly mitigating bacterial contamination risks. Owing to its high strain sensitivity, fast response time (<200 ms), and environmental resilience, the hydrogel served as an effective wearable sensor for real-time monitoring of human joint movements, subtle physiological signals. This work establishes a CMC-Na/PVA -based multifunctional hydrogel design paradigm, offering a scalable strategy for next-generation smart wearable devices.

Green synthesis of carbon quantum dots from soluble soybean polysaccharide for multifunctional applications

Yilan Xie,Xiangdong Geng,Xuejing Zheng,Jie Liu,Keyong Tang

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route using soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) as a green and renewable precursor. The resulting SSPS-derived CQDs (SCQDs) were uniform nanodots with average diameters ranging from 2.66 ± 0.69 nm to 2.81 ± 0.57 nm, exhibiting strong blue fluorescence and excellent water dispersibility. Structural characterization by TEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS confirmed the amorphous carbon structure and the presence of abundant hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups on SCQDs, which contribute to their distinctive optical and functional properties. The SCQDs exhibited excitation-dependent photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 12.0 %. They also demonstrated potent radical scavenging activities of 91.3 % for ABTS and 79.4 % for DPPH, along with notable antibacterial properties. Furthermore, the SCQDs showed good biocompatibility within the concentration range of 50–500 μg/mL, maintaining cell viability above 70 % after 7 days of exposure. The SCQDs were successfully utilized for cellular imaging, Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ ion sensing, and preservation of strawberries and bananas. These results demonstrate the suitability of SSPS for serving as an effective precursor in the sustainable synthesis of multifunctional CQDs with significant potential for applications in biomedical imaging, environmental sensing, and active food packaging.

Microenvironment-responsive immunoregulatory hydrogel exerts multi-regulation and synergistic reprogramming of macrophages to promote diabetic wound healing

Xin Rao,Yujing Niu,Qiantao Zhang,Xingcan Chen,Fangmei Zhou,Mingyuan Zhou,Yuchi Chen,Yingzhi Shen,Jie Yu,Bingqi Zhu,Zhishan Ding

Diabetic foot ulcers pose a significant clinical challenge due to dysregulated immune responses, neuropathic complications, and persistent infections that synergistically disrupt physiological tissue regeneration mechanisms. While immune activation is essential for orchestrating wound repair, excessive inflammation often exacerbates tissue damage in chronic diabetic wounds. To address these multifactorial issues, we designed a dual-crosslinked hydrogel platform integrating alginate, Bletilla striata polysaccharides (BSP), and gelatin to encapsulate tannic acid/Fe 3+ (TA/Fe 3+ ) composite nanoparticles with synergistic photothermal antibacterial treatment function. In vitro studies demonstrated that the dual-crosslinked hydrogel modulated immune microenvironment through effective scavenging of pathological reactive oxygen species (ROS) and significant downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and promoting fibroblast migration. In addition, TA/Fe 3+ endowed the hydrogel with antibacterial activity under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The macrophage phenotype study revealed that the hydrogel promoted anti-inflammatory phenotype reprogramming of bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, which may be achieved by down-regulating the nuclear expression of pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2). In the in vivo evaluation of the diabetic mouse model, the ability of the hydrogel to accelerate wound closure was verified, and the neovascularization at the lesion site was strongly stimulated. Through the temporal and spatial control of the healing process, the hydrogel has become an integrated treatment platform for chronic infection wound management, showing potential clinical application value.

Efficient Application of Supramolecular Behavior in the Antimicrobial Activity and Antioxidant of Structurally Mismatched Zn and Co-MOFs

Zi-hang Yuan,Si-ya Zheng,Yu-mei Dai,En Tang

The escalating global challenges posed by antibiotic resistance and oxidative stress demand the urgent development of dual-functional materials integrating both antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities to address these intertwined biological threats. This raises a pivotal question: Why not engineer a material capable of simultaneously delivering antioxidant and antibacterial functionalities? To bridge this critical gap, we strategically designed two novel Co and Zn metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) through supramolecular interactions to achieve synergistic antimicrobial–antioxidant performance, rigorously validated via multimodal characterization. Different from traditional antibiotics, these MOFs exert antibacterial effects by controlling the release of metal ions and other mechanisms. Co and Zn-MOFs demonstrated robust antimicrobial efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, coupled with potent antioxidant properties. Zn-MOFs exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity by intensifying membrane disruption via strengthened hydrophobic interactions with bacterial surfaces, whereas Co-MOFs showcased superior antioxidant capacity derived from their redox-active nature. This study unravels the critical mechanistic interplay between metal-bacteria interfacial dynamics and the preservation of cell wall structural integrity. These MOFs redefine multifunctional material paradigms for combating drug-resistant pathogens and oxidative damage, offering transformative potential for biomedical innovations and beyond.

Apple peel fermentation by Lactobacillus plantarum: Phytochemical transformations and enhanced abilities against inhibition of advanced glycation end products

Muhammad Nawaz,Hafiz Muhammad Rizwan,Zia Ud Din Momand,Irfan Ullah,Jiayi He,Qian Zhou,Mingfu Wang

Apple peel, a byproduct of apple processing or consumption, is often discarded, contributing to environmental pollution and a considerable loss of valuable bioresources. This study explored the health-promoting potential of apple peel through fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC14917. Our previous study indicated that this strain could increase the in vitro antioxidant activity of apple juice. In this study, we examined the phytochemical changes of apple peel extract (APe) fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC14917, as well as evaluating its beneficial effects against advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-induced cellular responses. In particular, the primary phytochemicals were identified as chlorogenic acid, rutin, isoquercitrin, quercetin-3-xyloside, and quercitrin in APe. After fermentation by L. plantarum ATCC14917, APe exhibited changes in phytochemical content, as well as induced pronounced anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Notably, fermentation increased the levels of quercitrin and quercetin-3-xyloside, while slightly decreased the levels of chlorogenic acid, rutin, and isoquercitrin. The highest antioxidant activities were observed in APe at a concentration of 2.0 mg/mL after 72 h of fermentation (F-APe). Furthermore, F-APe significantly reduced the ROS level and inflammatory responses in RAW 264.7 cells by modulating RAGE/MAPKs/NF-κB signaling pathway, demonstrating enhanced potentials compared to non-fermented APe (NF-APe). Collectively, our findings provide the first evidence that L. plantarum ATCC14917 fermentation specifically converts apple peel waste into bioactive compounds with enhanced beneficial effects, offering a novel strategy for the prevention and management of diseases linked to AGEs.
