Unearthing the fate and transport of nanobubbles in groundwater: Significance of straining in nanobubbles deposition

Dan Zhang,Wenke Wang,Zhengyu Zhang,Fengjia Liu,Yufei Ma,Shengke Yang

Knowledge of the transport and fate of nanobubbles (NBs) in groundwater is decisive to assess their remediation scope. In this work, based on the exploration of the stability of NBs in groundwater environmental conditions, the transport behavior and mechanism of NBs under physical (grain size, NBs concentration and flow velocity) and chemical conditions (pH, iron strength (IS) and types and dissolved organic matter (DOM)) were investigated by the column experiment and numerical simulation. The results showed NBs were more stable under alkaline and humic acid (HA) environment. NBs transport increased with the increase of grain size, NBs concentration, pH and HA, respectively. However, NBs transport was inhibited with the increase of acidity, electrolytes and L-Tryptophan (L-Trp) concentration, which was mainly due to these unfavorable factors will lead to an increase in the NBs size and a stronger electrostatic attraction at the interface between NB and sand, resulting in more retention of NBs in porous media. This was demonstrated by the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory and straining calculations. The two–site deposition model showed a better fit. The straining rate (k str ) was greater than attachment rate (k att ), which proved the main retention mechanism of NBs in groundwater was a synergistic mechanism dominated by pore straining and supplemented by attachment (electrostatic attraction and blocking). These findings provided a theoretical basis for the application of NBs technology in groundwater.

Unlocking efficient urea oxidation via Built-in field modulation in NiFe2O4/CeO2 Mott–Schottky heterojunction

Dongya Liu,Shaohan Xing,Xiuping Chen

Interface engineering via the construction of heterojunctions to accelerate electron transfer is an effective strategy for enhancing electrocatalytic activity. This study designed and synthesized a NiFe 2 O 4 /CeO 2 Mott–Schottky (M–S) heterojunction for efficient urea oxidation reaction (UOR), which exhibits exceptional activity with a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at 1.40 V (vs. RHE). Spectroscopic analyses validate the formation of the M–S heterojunction, where a significant work function difference drives spontaneous electron transfer from NiFe 2 O 4 to CeO 2 through Ni–O–Ce bridge, thereby establishing a strong built-in electric field. This interfacial charge rearrangement precisely modulates the electronic structure of the Ni sites, enhancing initial urea adsorption and lowering the d -band center. Such modulation weakens intermediate binding and reduces the energy barrier for the rate-determining CO 2 desorption step. The utility of NiFe 2 O 4 /CeO 2 is demonstrated through reduced energy consumption in hybrid water electrolysis along with improved efficiency and longevity in urea-assisted zinc–air batteries. This study elucidates the effectiveness of M–S heterojunction engineering for developing highly efficient catalysts for advanced energy conversion and storage.

Enantioselective interactions of silver nanoparticles and chiral antibiotics in driving resistance evolution in activated sludge

Fang Zhao,Zhao Yang,Yifan Xiao,Ganghua Han,Kim R. Hardie,Mark Bartlam,Yingying Wang

The stereochemistry of antibiotics significantly affects resistance development. With rising antibiotic resistance, nanotechnology is emerging as a promising solution, potentially increasing the likelihood of nanoparticle coexistence with antibiotics in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, the influence of nanoparticles on chiral antibiotics induced resistance remains unclear. This study employed chemical characterization, metagenomics, and molecular docking to comprehensively elucidate the resistance mechanisms induced by the combination of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and chiral antibiotics (ofloxacin: OFL and levofloxacin: LEV). AgNPs significantly altered the abundance and composition of antibiotic and metal resistance genes, as well as the conjugative transfer of the RP4 plasmid among activated sludge communities, with the OFL_AgNPs combination exhibiting a higher resistance potential than LEV_AgNPs. Mechanistic studies revealed that chiral antibiotics selectively interact with AgNPs, promoting Ag + release, enhancing antibiotic uptake, and forming stable complexes. These interactions reshaped microbial functions, including cell membrane permeability, oxidative stress response, quorum sensing, and extracellular secretion, thereby shaping resistance profiles. This study reveals previously overlooked enantiomer-specific risks associated with nanoparticle-antibiotic interactions and provides a foundation for strategies to mitigate ARG dissemination in wastewater treatment and broader environmental systems.

Enhanced Electrochromic Performance and Cycling Stability via Built-In Electric Field in WO3/Nb2O5 Heterostructure

Yingyu Chen,Wei Jiang,Chenyang Zhang,Qing Shen,De Li,Zhen Wang

Tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) is considered one of the most promising inorganic electrochromic materials due to its low cost, environmental friendliness, and high optical modulation capability. However, during the coloring/bleaching process, WO 3 films often suffer from performance degradation caused by ion trapping, resulting in slow response times and poor cycling stability. Herein, a transparent WO 3 /Nb 2 O 5 heterostructured electrode is designed, where a built-in electric field is formed at the interface due to differences in band alignment and Fermi levels between WO 3 and Nb 2 O 5 . This internal field acts as a critical driving force for charge transfer and ion migration, thereby enabling a fast and reversible electrochromic response. The prepared WO 3 /Nb 2 O 5 heterostructure exhibits a high optical contrast (78.4% at 700 nm), fast switching speed (t c /t b = 9.3/10.4 s), and excellent cycling stability (maintaining 97.2% of its initial modulation after 10 000 cycles). Moreover, simulation results indicate that the electrochromic window based on the WO 3 /Nb 2 O 5 heterostructure demonstrate effective solar radiation regulation and significant energy-saving potential across various global regions. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of electrochromic materials and holds great promise for applications in smart windows and intelligent display technologies.

An Integrated Afterglow and MRI Probe for In Vivo Imaging of ATP in Tumor Metabolism

Huan Du,Fengrong Lv,Renye Yue,Yuzhen Yu,Xinyu Xu,Zhe Li,Baode Chen,Cheng Zhang,Yu Peng,Wei Cheng,Sulai Liu,Xiaobing Zhang,Guosheng Song

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a central mediator of cancer cell metabolism and signaling, driving processes such as proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance. Current ATP imaging modalities-including fluorescence, chemiluminescence/bioluminescence, photoacoustic imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-face inherent trade-offs among sensitivity, spatial resolution, and tissue penetration capability. Here, a dual-mode probe is reported that synergistically couples the anatomical resolution of MRI with the high-sensitive, long-lasting signals of afterglow imaging for visualization of ATP in the tumor microenvironment. The probe is constructed via DNA hybridization between an afterglow unit and a T 1 -weighted MRI contrast agent, with an ATP-specific aptamer mediating probe disassembly upon ATP binding. This design generates simultaneous turn-on afterglow and MRI signals, enabling the imaging of intracellular and extracellular ATP fluctuations. Metabolic modulators-coenzyme Q10 (an ATP activator) and 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG, a glycolysis inhibitor)-are applied to demonstrate dynamic, bidirectional tracking of ATP levels in vivo. Furthermore, by monitoring ATP depletion during synergistic metabolic therapy (cisplatin + 2-DG), a correlation between imaging readouts and therapeutic efficacy is established. The work provides anintegrated MRI/afterglow imaging platform for high-contrast, real-time ATP sensing in cancer, offering a powerful tool for elucidating tumor metabolism and evaluating metabolic interventions.

Manipulating terahertz phonon-polariton in the ultrastrong coupling regime with bound states in the continuum

Yang Jiaxing,Zhang Liyu,Wang Kai,Zhang Chen,Fan Aoyu,He Zijian,Li Zhidi,Han Xiaobo,Ling Furi,Lu Peixiang

The strong coupling between photons and phonons in polar materials gives rise to phonon-polaritons that encapsulate a wealth of physical information, offering crucial tools for the ultrafast terahertz sources and the topological engineering of terahertz light. However, it is still quite challenging to form and manipulate the terahertz phonon-polaritons under the ultrastrong coupling regime till now. In this work, we demonstrate the ultrastrong coupling between the phonon (at 0.95 THz) in a MAPbI 3 film and the metallic bound states in the continuum (BICs) in Au metasurfaces. The Rabi splitting can be continuously tuned from 28% to 48.4% of the phonon frequency by adjusting the parameters (size, shape and period) of Au metasurfaces, reaching the ultrastrong coupling regime. By introducing wavelet transform, the mode evolution information of the terahertz phonon-polariton is successfully extracted. It indicates that the phonon radiation intensity of the MAPbI 3 film is enhanced as the coupling strength is increased. This work not only establishes a new platform for terahertz devices but also opens new avenues for exploring the intricate dynamics of terahertz phonon-polaritons.

Cheng-Xun Guo,Jing-Hua Chen,Zi-Lin He,Jun-Hua Wei,Dai-Bin Kuang

Methylammonium lead bromide perovskite (MAPbBr 3 ) quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation optoelectronic applications owing to their exceptional photoluminescent properties. However, their practical applications face significant challenges due to inherent instability issues. Herein, a solvent-induced in situ crystallization method is presented to encapsulate MAPbBr 3 QDs within a crosslinked (cl-) polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) network. This innovative approach eliminates environmental concerns associated with traditional solvent evaporation methods while enabling uniform dispersion and stabilization of perovskite QDs within the crosslinked polymer matrix. The effects of preparation conditions are systematically investigated on the optical performance of the composite materials. Notably, UV irradiation is found to significantly enhance the luminescent performance. The optimized MAPbBr 3 @cl-PMMA exhibits outstanding optoelectronic performance, featuring a narrow emission profile (full width at half maximum: 24.6 nm), high optical transmittance (91%), and an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield of 98.3%. Benefiting from the protective crosslinked polymer matrix, the composite demonstrates exceptional stability. Furthermore, by integrating MAPbBr 3 @cl-PMMA film with commercial K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ (KSF) red phosphor, a liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight device achieving a wide color gamut of 122.7% National Television System Committee (NTSC) 1953 standard is fabricated. This environmentally friendly and scalable synthesis method offers a promising pathway for large-area manufacturing and practical optoelectronic applications.

Fe-modified biochar-driven ROS generation in the rhizosphere and their role in microplastic transformation

Zulqarnain Haider Khan,Han Yu,Hui Li,Syed Shabi Ul Hassan Kazmi,Ruixia Han,Muhammad Azeem,Xin Sun,Zia Ur Rehman,Gang Li

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are critical mediators of soil biogeochemical processes. While the production of ROS with biochar (BC) in the rhizosphere has not been explored. We demonstrate that BC and Fe-modified biochar (FeBC), prepared at 400°C and 600°C, influence ROS generation in paddy soil containing biodegradable (polybutylene succinate: PBS) and conventional (polystyrene) microplastics (MPs). FeBC, particularly FeBC prepared at 600°C, enhance ROS (O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 , • OH) production in paddy soil. The results of rhizosphere-focused pot experiment simulating field-like flooded conditions highlight that FeBC significantly increased O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 , • OH concentrations, especially with PBS (25.63, 27.69, 35.82 µM/kg, respectively) surpassing control by 3.1–3.6-folds. Iron plaque formation, water-soluble phenols, and microbial activity further influenced ROS dynamics and accelerated MP degradation via oxidative fragmentation (SEM surface fissures), dissolved organic carbon release (484 mg/kg), and SUVA 254 decline (4.6 folds). Microbial shifts toward Actinobacteria (37–43 %) and Firmicutes (25–28 %) correlated with ROS dynamics, linking biotic-abiotic degradation pathways. This work reveals the novel role of FeBC in rhizosphere ROS generation and the environmental behavior of MPs in BC-treated agricultural systems.

Tailoring Cu Content in High-Entropy Alloys for Superior Bifunctional Electrocatalysis in Alkaline Water Splitting

Yuwen Pan,Guoning Ji,Boyao Zhang,Xin Li,Yongqi Tian,Shuangshuang Zhang,Depeng Zhao,Rongda Zhao,Fufa Wu,Lihua Miao

Electrocatalytic technology serves as a critical pathway for clean energy conversion, where high-entropy alloys demonstrate outstanding catalytic performance owing to their unique multi-principal-element design. This work systematically investigates Cu x (CoCrNiFe) 100-x HEAs as cost-effective bifunctional catalysts for both freshwater and seawater electrolysis. The optimized Cu 50 (CoCrNiFe) alloy exhibits excellent catalytic activity with low overpotentials of 248.3   mV for HER and 327   mV for OER at -10 mA cm -2 in alkaline freshwater, along with remarkable stability (<5% decay after 24   hours). Notably, in alkaline seawater electrolyte, it achieves even better HER performance (234   mV) while maintaining comparable OER activity, and demonstrates exceptional 50-hour durability in overall water splitting tests. These findings not only provide new insights into HEA-based catalyst design but also highlight the great potential of such materials for practical large-scale hydrogen production from seawater resources, representing a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions.

Lifen Meng,Yinying Zhang,Mengting Su

The determination of vitamin B6 (VB6) in food, health products, and pharmaceuticals is of great significance because it plays a crucial role in maintaining health and is a necessary condition for dietary intake. Therefore, the study uses L-Histidine, citric acid, potassium permanganate, and tetraethyl silicate as carbon source and Mn, Si source to prepare Mn, Si-CQDs by a hydrothermal method. The characteristics of the Mn,Si-CQDs are studied by TEM, XPS, FTIR, XRD, and UV-vis spectrum, Mn,Si-CQDs are spherical and well dispersed in aqueous solution, with an average particle size of 5 nm. The effect of different pH and storage time on the fluorescence intensity of Mn, Si-CQDs indicates that Mn, Si-CQDs have good fluorescence stability. The fluorescence of Mn, Si-CQDs can be selectively quenched by VB6 without being affected by interfering other substances, within the range of 0.05-20 μg/mL, The quenching degree ratio of Mn, Si-CQDs , F 0 /F, shows a good linear relationship with the concentration of VB6 (F 0 /F=0.19311+0.03723C (R 2 =0.99882)), with a detection limit of 0.037 μg/mL. The recovery rates were 94.21∼98.80% by the spiked recovery experiments, indicating the high sensitivity and selectivity of the Mn,Si-CQDs . During the antibacterial test, the Mn,Si-CQDs exhibite good antibacterial effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Penicillium, Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae .

Dramatic Enhancement of Thermoelectric Performance in PbTe by Unconventional Grain Shrinking in the Sintering Process

Pengfei Xu,Wei Zhao,Xixi Liu,Baohai Jia,Jiaqing He,Liangwei Fu,Biao Xu

Nanostructure engineering is a key strategy for tailoring properties in the fields of batteries, solar cells, thermoelectrics, and so on. Limited by grain coarsening, however, the nanostructure effect gradually degrades during the materials’ manufacturing and in-service period. Herein, a strategy of cleavage-fracture for grain shrinking is developed in a Pb 0.98 Sb 0.02 Te sample during sintering, and the grain size remains stable after repeated tests. Moreover, the initial grain boundary is filled by fractured slender grains and enriched by dislocations, evolving into a hierarchical grain-boundary structure. The lattice thermal conductivity ( k lat ) is greatly reduced to approach the amorphous limit. As a result, a record-high ZT value of ≈1.9 is obtained at 815 K in the n-type Pb 0.98 Sb 0.02 Te sample and a decent efficiency of 6.7% in thermoelectric device. This strategy for grain shrinking will shed light on the application of nanostructure engineering under high temperature and extreme conditions in other material systems.
