Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) combine the advantages of different materials and hopefully break through the limitation of high mass transfer resistance and low permeability in membrane distillation (MD) process. In this study, hydrophobic zeolitic imidazolate framework-71 (ZIF-71)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber composite membrane was prepared by the dilute solution coating method. ZIF-71 was incorporated into the PVDF dilute solution and a macroporous hydrophobic ZIF-71/PVDF coating layer was formed on the outer surface of PVDF hollow fiber support membrane through the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. PVDF hollow fiber support membrane was fabricated by the dry-jet wet spinning process. Membrane surface morphologies were observed through Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The effects of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) content in PVDF coating layer on membrane surface hydrophobicity and desalination performance were investigated through Dynamic water contact angle (WCA) measurements and the vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) experiment, respectively. The VMD experiment was carried out at feed temperature 50 °C and permeation side vacuum 31.3 kPa using 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution as the feed solution. Compared with the uncoated PVDF hollow fiber membrane, both the surface hydrophobicity and the water permeability of the ZIFs-incorporated PVDF hollow fiber composite membranes are improved. The surface WCA and permeation water flux of ZIFs-PVDF composite membrane increase from 94.5 to 136.5° and 13.5 to 27.1 kg . m −2. h −1 meanwhile the NaCl rejection could maintain at 99.99%. No obvious pore wetting phenomenon was observed for ZIFs-PVDF hollow fiber composite membrane during the continuous VMD experiment for 60 h. The dilute solution coating is a promising method to prepare high-performance hollow fiber composite membrane for the desalination in MD process.

Antibiotics play an essential role in the treatment of various diseases. However, the overuse of antibiotics has led to the pollution of water bodies and food safety, affecting human health. Herein, we report a dual-emission MOF-based flexible sensor for the detection of antibiotics in water, which was prepared by first encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) by a zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton (ZIF-8) and then blending it with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). The luminescent properties, structural tunability, and flexible porosity of the MOF-based composites were combined with the processability and flexibility of polymers to prepare luminescent membranes. The sensor is capable of dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and oxytetracycline (OTC), exhibiting sensitive detection of fluorescence burst and fluorescence enhancement, respectively, with detection limits of 0.012 μM and 8.9 nM. With the advantages of visual detection, high sensitivity, short detection time, and simplicity, the highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent flexible sensor has great potential for detecting antibiotics in an aqueous environment. It will further stimulate interest in luminescent MOF-based mixed matrix membranes and their sensing applications.

The bottlenecks of low separation efficiency and unsatisfactory structural stability restrain the advancement of superhydrophobic membranes in water-in-oil emulsions separation. In this work, a facile template-assisted strategy was proposed to construct the robust membranes by casting the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solution onto the hot stainless plate with the silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) suspension sprayed as the template in advance. The underlying merits of SiO 2 incorporated for the construction of hierarchical structure characteristics and meanwhile served as the reaction sites for the follow-up fluorinated modification were demonstrated, in terms of developing highly-permeable membrane with super hydrophobicity. Correspondingly, the best performing membrane of M−300F shows the fluxes of 2351 ± 225 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 2752 ± 210 L·m −2 ·h −1 in the separation of simulated water-in-toluene and water-in-hexane emulsions, and meanwhile exhibits the water rejection of 98.9 ± 0.6 % and 99.1 ± 0.3 % respectively. Results reported in this work might demonstrate a new insight in constructing superhydrophobic membranes for practical water-in-oil emulsions separation.

Nanocomposite membranes (NCMs) incorporated with nanomaterials have recently received increasing attention, but the preparation of high-performance membranes is still challenging due to the hydrophilicity and self-aggregation of the nanoparticles . In this study, graphite carbon nitride containing nitrogen defects was modified using dopamine (PDA@DCN) for effective alleviation of the agglomeration of nanoparticles resulting in a uniform casting solution. A non-solvent-induced phase separation method was adapted to prepare PVDF NCMs by using PDA@DCN as an effective additive. Superior permeability and selectivity were exhibited by the PDA 0.25 @DCN/PVDF 2 membrane (where a DA concentration of 0.25 g/100 mL was used in PDA@DCN preparation and 2% PVP was added during the membrane preparation) with the pure water flux of 390 L/(m 2 ·h) and Bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of 95.9%. The extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory revealed that the improvement of the flux recovery rate of PDA 0.25 @DCN/PVDF 2 was due to the decreased attractive interaction for fouling. Ternary phase diagram and viscosity experiments confirmed that the addition of PDA 0.25 @DCN accelerated phase inversion rate (as evident from thermodynamics and kinetics) and increased the porosity with smaller average surface pore size, which is expected to have good permeability and selectivity as an ultrafiltration membrane. Moreover, an excellent self-cleaning performance was demonstrated by PDA 0.25 @DCN/PVDF 2 , with a flux recovery rate of 84.5%, simply under visible light irradiation, which indicates its potential for environment-friendly practical application.

To endow transition metal carbide (MXene) fibers with satisfactory chemical resistances, high electrical conductivity and enhanced ductility, multifunctional hollow core-shell fibers with ductile polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) shell and compactly ordered MXene hollow core are fabricated with a coaxial wet-spinning assembly strategy. The partial hydroxylation of the PVDF occurred during the coagulation in the presence of ammonium hydroxide enhances the interfacial interaction of the PVDF layer with the MXene layer. The hollow core consisting of compact and ordered MXene layer provides the fibers with a high electrical conductivity of 3.08 × 10 5 S m −1 , while the PVDF shell endows the fibers with enhanced ductility and excellent resistances to acid, alkali, and seawater . The hollow core-shell structure makes the fiber lightweight, and facilitates multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves , resulting in increased electromagnetic wave absorption and attenuation. The ductile and conductive textile made of the hollow core-shell fibers with a 6 μm-thick MXene layer exhibits a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of ∼60 dB. Moreover, the resultant fibers exhibit exceptional Joule heating performances for human thermal management. The high conductivity, enhanced ductility, strong chemical resistances, and satisfactory Joule heating properties make the hollow core-shell fibers promising for electromagnetic interference shielding and wearable heating applications.

Electrostatic energy storage dielectric polymers are essential for pulsed power applications due to their high power density. However, it suffers from low energy density and poor efficiency at high temperatures, which seriously hinders its application. Herein, a polyetherimide – MgO/polymethyl methacrylate/poly(vinylidene fluoride) – polyetherimide sandwich-structured composite was prepared by solution casting and hot-pressing. The experimental results show that MgO acted as a nuclear agent to promote the crystallization of PVDF, thereby improving the polarization at high temperatures. At 150 °C, the optimized composite exhibited a high discharge energy density of 3.34 J cm−3 when the charge–discharge efficiency was above 90% at 350 MV m−1. MgO alleviated both the ferroelectric loss and conduction loss at the low electric field as well, resulting in high polarization and high efficiency at the low electric field. Through this work, we made a new attempt to enhance the energy storage performance of high-temperature polymer-based dielectric composites under a low electric field.

Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have encountered bottlenecks in energy density , durability, and safety issues. Designing functional polymer electrolytes has been considered as an effective way to develop high-performance of LMBs. In this study, PVDF-HFP-matrix polymeric electrolytes blended with co polymer P(MMA- co -PEGMEMA) (PPxPy) via a simple one-pot free-radical polymerization are successfully designed and prepared. It has been found that the PPxPy electrolytes can construct different comb -like networks via systematically tuning monomer ratios. The tailored PP5P5 gel electrolyte exhibited high ionic conductivity of 0.74 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature (RT), an enlarged electrochemical window up to 4.77 V, high lithium-ion transference number t Li+ of 0.65, and good mechanical property with Yang's modulus up to 131 MPa. Benefited from these good properties, the Li||LiFePO 4 batteries assembled with PP5P5 gel electrolyte achieved an exceptional discharge capacity of 152 mAh g −1 with nearly 100 % Coulombic efficiency after 150 cycles at 1C. Furthermore, the Li|PP5P5|NCM811 cell exhibits excellent reversible specific capacity of 188 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. Consequently, it can be anticipated the as-prepared functional polymer structure to provide a reliable method for the preparation of polymer electrolytes in quasi-solid-state batteries with high-energy-density.

Abstract This paper reports on the study that gamma-ray irradiation-induced polymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPA) to form Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA), which was then grafted on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to prepare modified PVDF-g-PNIPA membrane. We analyzed the influence of different irradiation doses and dose rates on the grafting rate of modified membranes, and the grafting rate increased with the irradiation dose under a certain irradiation dose. Through analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetry (TGA), the efficient progress of the grafting reaction was confirmed. With the increase of the grafting rate, the pore size of the membrane surface decreased gradually, but the surface roughness of the membrane tended to increase through the analyse of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, a mechanistic explanation for the grafting of PNIPA on the surface of PVDF membranes based on these experimental results was proposed.

Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane has recently drawn interest in textile and dyeing wastewater treatment due to its unique advantages of low-cost and large flux. However, its low rejection to dyes and developing appropriate membrane materials remain the major hurdles for its large-scale application. Herein, we developed a novel conductive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-Ni membrane combined with an external electric field to treat typical dyes. The membrane could be fabricated by a facile and low-cost method. The conductive PVDF-Ni membrane showed favorable rejection rate of Congo red (CR) (100%) and extremely high permeance (137.5 ± 6.8 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). To our knowledge, the permeance has exceeded the maximal literature record for the membranes with similar rejection rates of CR. The novel membrane combined with external electric field also provided a unique aeration mode: in-situ aeration, due to its good electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (overpotential of 157 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 ). Benefit from the in-situ aeration, the PVDF-Ni membrane showed 94% flux recovery after filtration of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Additionally, the PVDF-Ni membrane exhibited evident resistance to dye absorption and antibacterial activity. These versatile proprieties, together with the facile fabrication process, indicated the tremendous application prospect of the fabricated PVDF-Ni membrane for textile and dyeing wastewater treatment .

Polymer film capacitors with high stability and reliability at elevated temperatures are promising for next-generation power electronic systems and hybrid electric vehicles. In this work, sandwich-structured composite films with good dielectric thermal stability were fabricated based on hybrid membranes of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/polyacrylonitrile blend nanofibrous skeleton highly filled with BaTiO 3 nanoparticles. Composite films with 64.7 vol% BaTiO 3 nanoparticles in the core layer exhibited high permittivity (38.1) and low loss (0.046) at 1 kHz and room temperature, and the dielectric permittivity and loss were only slightly increased to 41.5 and 0.08, respectively, at 120°C. Good dispersion and high loading of BaTiO 3 nanoparticles in the composites films contributed to enhanced dielectric thermal stability and permittivity. Moreover, the composite films showed good flexibility, which could be ascribed to its sandwich-structure. Our work paves a generic way to fabricate flexible composite films with excellent dielectric thermal stability via high loadings of ceramic nanoparticles. POLYM. Based on the concept of dynamic membrane and photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR), the dynamic photocatalytic membrane reactor is developed via deposition of ZnIn 2 S 4 suspension on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. Operating with effluent circulating to the photocatalytic membrane reactor, the highest total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 57% is obtained after 3 h reaction with 1.88 mg cm −2 photocatalyst under the flux of 84.06 L m −2 h −1 and light intensity of 50 mW cm −2 . Operating with continuous influent and effluent mode under the flux of 26.09 L m −2 h −1 and light intensity of 50 mW cm −2 , an average of 50% removal efficiency can be maintained during the 24 h photocatalytic reaction with photocatalyst loading of 1.88 mg cm −2 when the initial concentration of tetracycline is 10 mg L −1 . Under the same operating conditions, more than 92% removal efficiency can be maintained during 36 h photocatalytic reaction when lower initial concentration of 100 μg L −1 is applied. After this reaction, the characterizations show that the surface and structure of PVDF basement membrane are not affected.

Water-purification membranes with high water flux, excellent recycling ability, good anti-fouling property, wide range for different oil/water emulsions separation, and strong water-soluble dyes removal ability are highly desirable for water purification but still a challenge to be realized. In this work, we show a simple method to address this challenge, in which halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have been decorated on the poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane surface through one-pot method via the aid of KH550 and dopamine. The [email protected] composite membrane exhibits superhydrophilic and under-water superoleophobic performance. In addition, our membrane can separate wide oil/water emulsions (including surfactant-stabilized and surfactant-free emulsions) from wastewater with high efficiency (>99.65%), outstanding recycle ability with good flux recovery rate (FRR > 95%) and good anti-fouling performance (the underwater oil contact angle (OCA) is 155.8 ± 1.8° with low oil adhesion) and high water flux (7994 ± 150 L m −2 h -1 ). Interestingly, our membrane also removes different water-soluble dyes (e.g., Congo red, methylene blue, and rhodamine B) from waste water by simply filtering. Those outstanding properties make our membrane hold great potential applications in real-world water purification and environmental protection.
