Three-dimensional LLZO/PVDF-HFP fiber network-enhanced ultrathin composite solid electrolyte membrane for dendrite-free solid-state lithium metal batteries

Wen He,Hui Ding,Xu Chen,Wensheng Yang

Composite solid electrolyte (CSE) membranes for lithium metal batteries attract great attention with excellent safety and suitable flexibility. Herein, we construct a polyethylene oxide-based ultrathin CSE membrane that is enhanced by a 3D fiber network composed of Poly (vinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene) fibers and Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 particles directly fabricated on the cathode. The 3D fiber network facilitates the rapid transport and uniform deposition of Li + , and enhances the mechanical strength of the electrolyte membrane, thereby effectively inhibiting the growth of lithium dendrites . Moreover, the unique preparation method reduces the interfacial impedance, and it can also greatly reduce the electrolyte thickness, which is beneficial to increasing the energy density of the battery. The lithium symmetric battery shows stable cycling over 1500 h under 0.2 mA cm −2 . Li/LiFePO 4 battery with the CSE membrane exhibits a high reversible capacity of 155.8 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 C for 100 cycles and the capacity retention rate is 98.0%. Furthermore, the obtained CSE membrane has a broadened electrochemical window of 4.83 V, and the reversible capacity of the Li/LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 battery is 160.6 mAh·g −1  at 0.2 C for 100 cycles. These findings showed that the structure proposed here is a viable electrolyte strategy for advanced solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Energy Storage Capability of PVDF-Based Nanocomposites Significantly Enhanced by BaTiO3@BaxSr1–xTiO3 with Multi-Layer Gradient Core–Shell Structure Nanofillers

Zhihui Yi,Zhuo Wang,Dan Wu,Ying Xue

Electrostatic capacitors have high power density, but how to improve the energy storage density of electrostatic capacitors has always been the key to solving energy problems in the background of the energy crisis. Designing multi-layer core–shell inorganic nanofillers is an effective way to break the contradiction between high dielectric constant and high breakdown strength in nanocomposites to improve the energy storage performance. Herein, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based nanocomposites are proposed, which are filled with multi-layer core–shell structured inorganic BaTiO3@BaxSr1–xTiO3@DA nanoparticles (BT@BST@DA NPs). In the optimized 2 wt % PVDF/BaTiO3@BaxSr1–xTiO3@DA nanoparticle (PVDF/BT@BST@DA NPs) nanocomposite material, a high discharge energy density of 13.75 J/cm3 (370 MV/m) can be obtained, as well as excellent discharge efficiency. The dielectric performance and energy storage density of 2 wt % PVDF/BT@BST@DA NPs are proven to be better than 2 wt % PVDF/BaTiO3@DA nanoparticles (PVDF/BT@DA NPs). This work provides a strategy for the development of dielectrics for electrostatic capacitors with high energy storage density.

High energy core-shell Al@PVDF/AP composites with enhanced combustion efficiency by doping of graphene-based carbohydrazide complexes as catalysts

Shuai-Zhong Wang,Binbin Huang,Shuwen Chen,Pei-Jin Liu,Wei Li,Qi-Long Yan

In this paper, energetic combustion catalysts doped core–shell Al@PVDF/AP composites have been fabricated via a spray-drying method, where three kinds of graphene-based energetic coordination polymers (GECPs, GO-CHZ-Co, GO-CHZ-Ni and GO-CHZ-Cu) are employed. These composites have been characterized comprehensively in terms of morphologies, thermal decomposition behaviors, energy density, combustion performances and condensed combustion products (CCPs). The results show that the GO-CHZ-Co and GO-CHZ-Cu could increases the heat of explosion for Al@PVDF/AP composites from 6885.2 J·g −1 to 7491.0 J·g −1 and 7390.1 J·g −1 , respectively, which are 8.8 % and 7.3 % higher than the blank reference samples. Moreover, the burn rates for these composites decrease when GO-CHZ-Co or GO-CHZ-Ni is included, indicating that these composites are promising candidates with improved energy density even unusually with decreased burn rates.

Building up ion-conduction pathways in solid polymer electrolytes through surface and pore functionalization of PVDF porous membranes with ionic conductors

Chi-Yang Tsai,Ying-Ling Liu

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have received much research attention for the safety concerns about high energy density batteries. The major issues to be addressed for SPEs are relatively low ionic conductivity and poor electrolyte/electrode interfacial compatibility. In this work, lithium-ion-conduction pathways have been built up in SPEs through introduction of ion conductor-containing chains on the pore walls of porous PVDF membranes. SPEs employing the functionalized membranes as supporting matrix have been prepared through an in situ polymerization technique. The built-in ion-conduction pathways result in a 6.7-times of ionic conductivity to the corresponding SPEs, compared to the SPEs made with the neat PVDF support. The SPEs also exhibit an electrochemical stability window up to 4.5 V and a significant suppression on lithium dendrite formation. The corresponding LiFePO 4 /SPE/Li cells demonstrate a discharge capacity of 141 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C and a capacity retention of 95% after 100 charging/discharging cycles. The results provide a structural design and synthesis approach for conveniently building up lithium-ion transportation channels in SPEs for high performance lithium metal batteries .

Highly conductive, hydrophobic, and acid/alkali-resistant MXene@PVDF hollow core-shell fibers for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding and Joule heating

Lvxuan Ye,Liu-Xin Liu,Guang Yin,Yunfang Liu,Zhiming Deng,Cheng-Zhang Qi,Hao-Bin Zhang,Zhong-Zhen Yu

To endow transition metal carbide (MXene) fibers with satisfactory chemical resistances, high electrical conductivity and enhanced ductility, multifunctional hollow core-shell fibers with ductile polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) shell and compactly ordered MXene hollow core are fabricated with a coaxial wet-spinning assembly strategy. The partial hydroxylation of the PVDF occurred during the coagulation in the presence of ammonium hydroxide enhances the interfacial interaction of the PVDF layer with the MXene layer. The hollow core consisting of compact and ordered MXene layer provides the fibers with a high electrical conductivity of 3.08 × 10 5  S m −1 , while the PVDF shell endows the fibers with enhanced ductility and excellent resistances to acid, alkali, and seawater . The hollow core-shell structure makes the fiber lightweight, and facilitates multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves , resulting in increased electromagnetic wave absorption and attenuation. The ductile and conductive textile made of the hollow core-shell fibers with a 6 μm-thick MXene layer exhibits a high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of ∼60 dB. Moreover, the resultant fibers exhibit exceptional Joule heating performances for human thermal management. The high conductivity, enhanced ductility, strong chemical resistances, and satisfactory Joule heating properties make the hollow core-shell fibers promising for electromagnetic interference shielding and wearable heating applications.

Construction and performance of PVDF-HFP-matrix comb-like gel copolymer electrolyte for high-performance quasi-solid-state lithium-metal batteries

Lingguang Yi,Xiaoyi Chen,Changfei Zou,Jiali Liu,Xilin Cao,Xiyuan Tao,Zihao Zang,Liping Zheng,Li Liu,Xianyou Wang

Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have encountered bottlenecks in energy density , durability, and safety issues. Designing functional polymer electrolytes has been considered as an effective way to develop high-performance of LMBs. In this study, PVDF-HFP-matrix polymeric electrolytes blended with co polymer P(MMA- co -PEGMEMA) (PPxPy) via a simple one-pot free-radical polymerization are successfully designed and prepared. It has been found that the PPxPy electrolytes can construct different comb -like networks via systematically tuning monomer ratios. The tailored PP5P5 gel electrolyte exhibited high ionic conductivity of 0.74 × 10 −3  S cm −1 at room temperature (RT), an enlarged electrochemical window up to 4.77 V, high lithium-ion transference number t Li+ of 0.65, and good mechanical property with Yang's modulus up to 131 MPa. Benefited from these good properties, the Li||LiFePO 4 batteries assembled with PP5P5 gel electrolyte achieved an exceptional discharge capacity of 152 mAh g −1 with nearly 100 % Coulombic efficiency after 150 cycles at 1C. Furthermore, the Li|PP5P5|NCM811 cell exhibits excellent reversible specific capacity of 188 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. Consequently, it can be anticipated the as-prepared functional polymer structure to provide a reliable method for the preparation of polymer electrolytes in quasi-solid-state batteries with high-energy-density.

Fabrication of piezoelectric Ca-P-Si-doped PVDF scaffold by phase-separation-hydration: Material characterization, in vitro biocompatibility and osteoblast redifferentiation

Tianxing Gong,Tingyu Li,Lisha Meng,Yadong Chen,Tao Wu,Jingqiu Zhou,Guoxiu Lu,Zhiguo Wang

Native bone is piezoelectric in nature and generates abundant surface charges under mechanical compression, which regulate osteoblast proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and so on. Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is becoming one of the most popular piezoelectric polymers because of its easy processability and good biocompatibility. Unfortunately, because only the β and γ crystal phases of PVDF have piezoelectricity, post-treatments, for example, polarizing at high temperature, are required to enhance the piezoelectricity of PVDF scaffolds after fabrication. In this study, we reported a phase-separation-hydration method to fabricate a calcium phosphate silicate (CPS)-doped PVDF scaffold. Our method fabricated a better piezoelectric scaffold than native bone without further processing (∼ 3 pC/N vs. 0.7 pC/N). In addition, the scaffold was mechanically compatible (∼ 7 MPa) with the cancellous bone with sufficient porosity (∼ 45%) to facilitate osteoblast infiltration and bone ingrowth. The in vitro biocompatibility analyses proved that the prepared CPS-PVDF scaffold was biocompatible with osteoblast cells and encouraged osteoblast redifferentiation. In conclusion, our results suggest that this CPS-PVDF scaffold is a promising candidate for bone tissue engineering applications.

Highly Sensitive Ratiometric Fluorescent Flexible Sensor Based on the RhB@ZIF-8@PVDF Mixed-Matrix Membrane for Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic Detection

Nuan Xu,Zhenhua Tang,Yan-Ping Jiang,Junlin Fang,Li Zhang,Xiaofang Lai,Qi-Jun Sun,Jing-Min Fan,Xin-Gui Tang,Qiu-Xiang Liu,Ji-Kang Jian

Antibiotics play an essential role in the treatment of various diseases. However, the overuse of antibiotics has led to the pollution of water bodies and food safety, affecting human health. Herein, we report a dual-emission MOF-based flexible sensor for the detection of antibiotics in water, which was prepared by first encapsulating rhodamine B (RhB) by a zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton (ZIF-8) and then blending it with polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF). The luminescent properties, structural tunability, and flexible porosity of the MOF-based composites were combined with the processability and flexibility of polymers to prepare luminescent membranes. The sensor is capable of dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing of nitrofurantoin (NFT) and oxytetracycline (OTC), exhibiting sensitive detection of fluorescence burst and fluorescence enhancement, respectively, with detection limits of 0.012 μM and 8.9 nM. With the advantages of visual detection, high sensitivity, short detection time, and simplicity, the highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent flexible sensor has great potential for detecting antibiotics in an aqueous environment. It will further stimulate interest in luminescent MOF-based mixed matrix membranes and their sensing applications.

Robust superhydrophobic PVDF membrane constructed by template-assisted strategy via thermally induced phase separation for rapid water-in-oil emulsions separation

Xuan Zhang,Chao Wei,Ying-Jie Hao,Zhi-Wei Yan,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Xiao-Jing Guo,Wan-Zhong Lang

The bottlenecks of low separation efficiency and unsatisfactory structural stability restrain the advancement of superhydrophobic membranes in water-in-oil emulsions separation. In this work, a facile template-assisted strategy was proposed to construct the robust membranes by casting the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) solution onto the hot stainless plate with the silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) suspension sprayed as the template in advance. The underlying merits of SiO 2 incorporated for the construction of hierarchical structure characteristics and meanwhile served as the reaction sites for the follow-up fluorinated modification were demonstrated, in terms of developing highly-permeable membrane with super hydrophobicity. Correspondingly, the best performing membrane of M−300F shows the fluxes of 2351 ± 225 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 2752 ± 210 L·m −2 ·h −1 in the separation of simulated water-in-toluene and water-in-hexane emulsions, and meanwhile exhibits the water rejection of 98.9 ± 0.6 % and 99.1 ± 0.3 % respectively. Results reported in this work might demonstrate a new insight in constructing superhydrophobic membranes for practical water-in-oil emulsions separation.

Enhancing the pervaporation performance of PEBA/PVDF membrane by incorporating MAF-6 for the separation of phenol from its aqueous solution

Rehan Khan,Ihtisham Ul Haq,Heng Mao,Ao-Shuai Zhang,Li-Hao Xu,Hong-Gang Zhen,Zhi-Ping Zhao

Phenol is highly toxic and carcinogenic even at low concentrations. This study focused on preparing high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the pervaporation separation of phenol from its aqueous solution. A highly-efficient zeolitic metal azolate framework, RHO-[Zn(Heim) 2 ] (MAF-6, Heim = 2-ethylimidazole) was incorporated into the polyether block amide (PEBA-2533) supported on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. The MAF-6 was chosen as the filler due to its inherent hydrophobic surfaces and aperture size (7.6 Å), which is larger than the molecular kinetic diameter of phenol (6.6 Å). Effects of the casting solution concentration, active layer thickness, MAF-6 loading, operating temperature, and phenol concentration were systematically investigated. With the increase of the MAF-6 loading ratio X from 0 to 7, the phenol flux of the membrane was gradually enhanced, but the water flux was reduced. For 1000 ppm phenol aqueous solution at 80 °C, MAF-6–7@MMM displayed the optimal separation factor of 25.9 with a phenol flux of 89.2 g∙m −2 ∙h −1 . The pervaporation separation index (PSI) of the MAF-6–7@MMM was 1317.7 kg∙µm∙m −2 ∙h −1 at 80 °C, which was much higher than the PEBA/PVDF membrane (787 kg∙µm∙m −2 ∙h −1 ). Impressively, an increasing feed temperature enhanced the phenol flux more prominently than water, owing to the hydrophobicity and porosity of MAF-6. Consequently, the resultant MAF-6-X@MMMs broke the trade-off limitation between phenol permeability and selectivity. The as-prepared membrane also exhibited exceptional long-term stability, suggesting its prospect of industrial application.

Fabrication of tight GO/PVDF hollow fiber membranes with improved permeability for efficient fractionation of dyes and salts in textile wastewater

Wang Chuanfeng,Chen Yingbo,Yang Kang,Hu Xiaoyu,Zhang Yufeng

In this study, a graphene oxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (GO/PVDF) tight hollow fiber membrane (HFM) with improved permeability was fabricated via one-step direct spinning process to fractionate the dyes and salts (NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 ) in textile wastewater. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the GO/PVDF HFM possessed a smooth and tight outer selective layer and a relatively porous and loose inner surface. The optimized HFM not only possesses a small mean pore radius of 1.14 nm, but also has a high pure water flux of 24.8 L/m 2 ·h·bar. The stronger negative charge (− 40 mV at pH = 7) was obtained by the GO/PVDF HFM. Due to the synergistic effects of size exclusion and charge repulsion, the resultant HFM exhibited excellent rejection for dyes (i.e., close to 100% for Congo red and Methyl blue, 98.9% for Eriochrome black T) and low salts rejection (i.e., 1% for NaCl, 11% for Na 2 SO 4 ). Besides, with appropriate addition of hydrophilic GO to the doped solution, the resultant membrane exhibited good hydrophilicity, antifouling property and excellent stability. The newly developed tight HFM would be of great significance for effective fractionation and treatment of textile wastewater.

Accelerating the Design of β-CD-PVDF-based Molecularly Imprinted Nanocomposite Membrane for Selective Separation: A Surface Functional Monomer-Directing Strategy

Junda Wu,Jia Gao,Zhiqing Hou,Wendong Xing,Jiangdong Dai,Yongsheng Yan,Yilin Wu

Enoxacin, as the broad-spectrum antibacterial activity antibiotics, has been widely used in treatment of bacterial diseases in animals and humans around the world. The extensive use of enoxacin in healthcare has also caused increasingly serious environmental risk as a matter of course. In this work, enoxacin imprinted poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite membranes (EIPCMs) were developed by strategy of surface grafting beta-cyclodextrin ( β -CD) for the improved hydrophilic and antifouling properties of the basal membrane. PVDF membrane was prepared by phase inversion method, and β -CD was grafted onto the surface after hydroxyl groups modification. The effects of adding amount of β -CD on performance of basal membranes were systematically examined. Further, the specific recognition sites were fabricated via sol–gel surface imprinting method using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The specific adsorption and permeation experiments were investigated and explored the separation performance and mechanism of EIPCM. The results indicated that the as-prepared EIPCMs not only exhibited highly favorable features and high rebinding strength (31.25 mg g − 1 ) , but also possessed superior selective performance toward enoxacin (imprinted factor β is 3.15). Furthermore, in order to investigate the practical applications of EIPCMs, the adsorption experiments were carried out using environmental sewage. The work developed here shows great potential for further applications in selective recognition and separation antibiotics pollution from the environment.
