K2SO4-promoted TiO2 for the efficient oxidative coupling of methane

Yu Xie,Wangyang Wang,Jiale Cui,Hui Li,Kang Cheng,Qinghong Zhang,Ye Wang

The oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) into C 2−3 hydrocarbons is still limited to a few types of catalysts with low product yield. Herein, we reported our discovery that a K 2 SO 4 -promoted TiO 2 catalyst can effectively catalyze the OCM reactions with a C 2−3 yield of up to 26 %, which is comparable to the classical Mn-NaWO x /SiO 2 catalyst. Besides, this catalyst not only exhibits promising stability for at least 200 h without signs of deactivation under typical OCM conditions but also demonstrates high sulfur-resistance performance, outperforming most reported catalysts. We have evidenced that K + ions are responsible for increasing the surface basicity of rutile TiO 2 , thus benefiting C 2−3 selectivity. The presence of SO 4 2− can prevent the formation of potassium titanates, which catalyze the over-oxidation of CH 4 . The surface lattice oxygen species are confirmed to be the active sites for selective CH 4 activation, while the chemisorbed oxygen species catalyze the combustion of CH 4 to CO 2 .

Interface Catalysis of PdO/TiO2 in the Transformation of Formate

Heng Chen,Li Li,Shichao Zhang,Chaofeng Zhang

Recently, as an important product of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction and a crucial hydrogen storage material, the transformation of formic acid (FA)/formate to H2 or active hydrogen species has attracted much attention. However, obtaining a robust and efficient solid catalyst constitutes a major challenge. In this work, nitrobenzene was used as the active hydrogen species capture agent, and various Pd-based catalysts were prepared and used to refine the influence factors of FA decomposition over TiO2-supported palladium catalysts. The catalysts’ deactivation and regeneration process, control reactions, and catalyst characterizations indicate that the electrical state of the Pd species and interface microsurroundings played decisive roles in the activity and reusability of PdO/TiO2. Based on the results obtained, a tentative mechanism with the active sites (Pdδ+–O–Ti) located at the PdO/TiO2 interface was proposed, which would be useful for the chemistry of the Pd catalyst and formate decomposition.

Novel dual bactericidal mechanism of TiO2 ‘solution’ during photocatalytic sterilization

Xinhui Jiang,Jindou Hu,Yanan Qin,Xiaoyan Lu,Anjie Liu,Zhenjiang Lu,Jing Xie,Yali Cao

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has become a prominent material in photocatalysis research, particularly for antibacterial applications in the post-pandemic era. However, conventional solid TiO 2 nanoparticles tend to agglomerate, reducing the contact area between the catalyst and bacteria, which limits their antibacterial efficiency. To overcome this, an ultra-simple hydrolysis strategy was used to create a highly dispersed TiO 2 “solution” catalyst, rich in hydroxyl groups. The resulting TiO 2 colloid exhibited excellent dispersion in water and showed the Tyndall effect. Experimental results demonstrated that the TiO 2 achieved a 100% sterilization rate within 5 min of light exposure, surpassing commercial P25. This outstanding photocatalytic antibacterial performance is due to its smaller particle size and improved dispersion, which enhance superoxide radical production and provide more active sites. Moreover, an innovative bactericidal mechanism was proposed: when hydroxyl-rich TiO 2 adsorbs onto bacterial surfaces, it dehydrates the bacteria, similar to the effect of a salt solution. This research offers a new, straightforward strategy for developing highly photocatalytically active catalysts that combine both photocatalytic and dehydration-based antibacterial mechanisms.

Micropillar arrays supported mesoporous TiO2 photoanode for enhancing photoelectrochemical performance

Youxu Yu,Jinwang Li,Yuxin Liu,Zhefei Pan,Xun Zhu,Dingding Ye,Yang Yang,Hong Wang,Liang An,Rong Chen,Qiang Liao

Mesoporous TiO 2 photoanode shows promising application in photoelectrochemical systems due to large specific surface area and regular mesoporous structure. The evaporation-induced self-assembly method is usually employed for the preparation of mesoporous TiO 2 photoanodes. However, the photoelectrochemical performance of such a mesoporous TiO 2 photoanode prepared by this method is still unable to meet the demand owing to low photocatalyst loading, because the in-plane tensile stress during calcination may destroy the mesoporous TiO 2 film. To address this issue, the micropillar arrays supported mesoporous TiO 2 photoanode is proposed by directly synthesizing mesoporous TiO 2 film on the micropillar arrays loaded substrate. It is shown that the micropillar arrays interspersed inside the mesoporous TiO 2 film can help release the in-plane tensile stress during calcination, keeping the mesoporous structure intact. As a result, the photoelectrochemical cell with the optimized micropillar arrays supported mesoporous TiO 2 photoanode exhibits superior performance than does the nanoparticles-packed TiO 2 photoanode. Remarkably, the proposed method allows for preparing the TiO 2 micropillar arrays, by which the formed TiO 2 micropillar arrays supported mesoporous TiO 2 photoanode yields the optimal performance. As compared to the nanoparticles-packed TiO 2 photoanode, the short circuit current density and maximum power density increase by 63.6 % and 18.8 %, respectively.

Zn–ZnO@TiO2 nanocomposite: a direct electrode for nonenzymatic biosensors

Liang Zhen,Zhang Xiaojun

In this article, TiO 2 -modified ZnO nanotube arrays (NTAs) are successfully synthesized and used to prepare a nonenzymatic biosensor for the detection of glucose and hydrazine hydrate. In brief, the ZnO@TiO 2 NTAs are synthesized on zinc foil by two steps of simple hydrothermal method. Therefore, it can be directly used as a working electrode and is not needed to be modified to other electrode surface by any means to form a sensor. In the oxidation of glucose and reduction reaction of hydrazine hydrate, it exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, it has high sensitivity, a fast response time (less than 3 s), and a detection limit as low as 0.5 μM (S/N = 3) toward glucose and hydrazine hydrate respectively. In the selectivity of the target analyte, the Zn–ZnO@TiO 2 nanocomposite electrode can effectively resist the influence of different interferent, including uric acid, dopamine, and l -cysteine.

Constructing PAM/PEG electromagnetic shielding hydrogels based on MWCNTs@TiO2

Teng Zhou,Daohai Zhang,Kunlan Diao,Jiajia Du,Yupeng Hu,Zhi Lei,Dongju Liu,Shan Liu,Shuhao Qin

With the widespread popularity of digital technology, electromagnetic interference(EMI) has become a new type of pollution that endangers electronic equipment and biological systems. In this paper, MWCNTs@TiO 2 composite materials were prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method and then added into the three dimensional framework constructed by PAM (polyacrylamide) and PEG (polyethylene glycol) to obtain hydrogels with EMI functionality. It was found that in the M@T/PAM-4 (MWCNTs@TiO 2 /PAM-4) hydrogel, due to the fact that TiO 2 particles were loaded on the surface of MWCNTs, its cross section presented a granular shape. As the content of MWCNTs increased, the EMI SE T of the hydrogel increased, with the M@T/PAM-4 hydrogel reaching 29 dB. The electrical conductivity and mechanical properties also increased accordingly. Compared with the pure PAM hydrogel, they were respectively improved by 626 % and 24.5 %, which was attributed to the formation of a conductive network by MWCNTs and the enhancement of interfacial polarization, etc. Meanwhile, the water retention rate of the M@T/PAM-4 hydrogel could still reach 34.1 % after 8 h. Moreover, it also had a relatively high water content of 69.08 %. Therefore, This improves the application value and development prospects of the hydrogel in fields such as Electromagnetic (EM) shielding.

Electrospun WO3/TiO2 Core–Shell Nanowires for Triethylamine Gas Sensing

Wenhao Li,Bo Zhang,Xiangrui Dong,Qi Lu,Hao Shen,Yi Ni,Yuechen Liu,Haitao Song

In this work, WO3/TiO2core–shell (C-S) nanowires (NWs) were successfully synthesized by the coaxial electrospinning method and subsequent high-temperature calcination treatment. After some microscopic structural characterizations, although the prepared WO3–TiO2and TiO2–WO3C-S NWs displayed quite different surface morphologies, both of the shell coatings were uniform and their typical shell thicknesses were extremely close, with mean values of 22 and 20 nm, respectively. In gas sensing tests, WO3/TiO2C-S NWs exhibited good selectivity towards triethylamine (TEA) without significant interfering gases. Compared with bare WO3and TiO2NWs, WO3/TiO2C-S NWs showed better gas sensing performance. Specifically, the optimal operating temperature and response of TiO2–WO3C-S NWs to 100 ppm TEA were 130 °C and 106, which were reduced by 70 °C and increased by 5.73 times compared to bare WO3, respectively. Obviously, the C-S nanostructures contributed to improving the gas sensing performance of materials towards TEA. Finally, some hypothetical sensing mechanisms were proposed, which were expected to have important reference significance for the design of target products applied to TEA sensing.

Epitaxial TiO2/SnO2 core–shell heterostructure by atomic layer deposition

Anmin Nie,Jiabin Liu,Qianqian Li,Yingchun Cheng,Cezhou Dong,Wu Zhou,Peng Wang,Qingxiao Wang,Yang Yang,Yihan Zhu,Yuewu Zeng,Hongtao Wang

Taking TiO2/SnO2 core–shell nanowires (NWs) as a model system, we systematically investigate the structure and the morphological evolution of this heterostructure synthesized by atomic layer deposition/epitaxy (ALD/ALE). All characterizations, by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction and Raman spectra, reveal that single crystalline rutile TiO2 shells can be epitaxially grown on SnO2 NWs with an atomically sharp interface at low temperature (250 °C). The growth behavior of the TiO2 shells highly depends on the surface orientations and the geometrical shape of the core SnO2 NW cross-section. Atomically smooth surfaces are found for growth on the {110} surface. Rough surfaces develop on {100} surfaces due to (100) − (1 × 3) reconstruction, by introducing steps in the [010] direction as a continuation of {110} facets. Lattice mismatch induces superlattice structures in the TiO2 shell and misfit dislocations along the interface. Conformal epitaxial growth has been observed for SnO2 NW cores with an octagonal cross-section ({100} and {110} surfaces). However, for a rectangular core ({10} and {010} surfaces), the shell also derives an octagonal shape from the epitaxial growth, which was explained by a proposed model based on ALD kinetics. The surface steps and defects induced by the lattice mismatch likely lead to improved photoluminescence (PL) performance for the yellow emission. Compared to the pure SnO2 NWs, the PL spectrum of the core–shell nanostructures exhibits a stronger emission peak, which suggests potential applications in optoelectronics.

Photocatalytic Degradation Mechanism of Oxytetracyclines Using Fe2O3–TiO2 Nanopowders

Li Rong,Liu Jia,Jia Yuefa,Zhen Qiang

Photocatalytic degradation performance of oxytetracycline (OTC) was investigated in aqueous solution using Fe2O3–TiO2 nanopowders under UV and visible light, respectively. Compare with pure TiO2, the Fe2O3–TiO2 nanopowder had improved photocatalytic activity under visible light, while had a bit decrease under UV light. Photoluminescence (PL) spectrum measurement, ·OH radical test and trapping experiments were carried out to investigate the photocatalytic mechanism. Under UV light, photogenerated electrons–holes can transfer from TiO2 to the conduction band and valence band of Fe2O3, respectively, and further participated in the degradation of OTC, thus both O2·− and holes are the main active species in this case. Under visible light, Fe2O3 was activated and yield charge carriers, then the photogenerated electrons immigrated to the trapping site of TiO2, the photogenerated holes accumulate in the valence band (VB) of Fe2O3 was the major active species reacted with OTC.

Preparation of ultralow-oxygen titanium by direct reduction of TiO2

Jian PANG,Ling-xin KONG,Li-guo ZHU,Bao-qiang XU,Jun-jie XU,Chong-lin BAI,Bin YANG

A new method for the preparation of low oxygen titanium was proposed by the direct reduction of TiO 2 with Mg produced by MgCl 2 −KCl−YCl 3 molten salt electrolysis. The Mg−Ti−O phase diagram indicates that it is feasible to reduce TiO 2 using Mg, and the Φ − p O2− diagrams indicate that deep deoxidation of titanium in molten MgCl 2 −YCl 3 is also feasible. The experimental study on the reduction of TiO 2 was carried out in MgCl 2 −YCl 3 and MgCl 2 −YCl 3 −KCl molten salts. The results showed that the O 2− from the reduction and deoxygenation was removed using YOCl precipitation and CO x gas production and TiO 2 can be reduced to titanium peroxide (Ti 6 O) by electrochemical reduction at 1073−1173 K and 2.5−3.1 V. The high-oxygen titanium was electrochemically deoxidized in the molten salt of MgCl 2 −YCl 3 at a temperature of 1173 K at different voltages. Moreover, it was observed that it is possible to reduce the high oxygen content of titanium from 1200×10 −6 to less than 100×10 −6 oxygen.

Preparation and photocatalytic properties of BNMT-BNNS/TiO2 hierarchical heterostructures

Yuchun Ji,Rifeng Xiao,Xianglong Tang,Wenzhuo Chen,Jilin Wang,Fei Long,Zhengguang Zou

A novel one-dimensional boron nitride and titanium oxide hierarchical heterostructures (BNMT-BNNS/TiO 2 ) composite photocatalyst endowed with high specific surface area was synthesized by molten salt assisted annealing and sol-gel method. With the increase of TiO 2 concentration, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of BNMT-BNNS/TiO 2 hierarchical heterostructures increased first and then decreases, while the adsorption tended to decrease. When the molar ratio of TiO 2 to BNMT-BNNS was 27:50, BNMT-BNNS/TiO 2 displayed a higher specific surface area of 79.6770 m 2 g -1 than that of TiO 2 (19.810 m 2 g -1 ). The methylene blue photodegradation rate of BNMT-BNNS/TiO 2 is 99.62% after 115 min ultraviolet irradiation, show 1.62 times higher than that of the synthesized pure TiO 2 . The positive synergistic degradation mechanism between the strong adsorption of BNMT-BNNS support and the excellent photocatalysis of TiO 2 was also discussed in detail. This work reports the synthesis of BNMT-BNNS/TiO 2 photocatalysts with high surface area, excellent photocatalytic performance and reusability . BNMT-BNNS/TiO 2 has potential applications in practical environmental purification.

Photocatalysis-promoted tumor ferroptosis enabled by MOF-derived black TiO2

Huilan Zhuang,Lun Wang,Sijie Shao,Haitong Jing,Panpan Xue,Tingjie Bai,Jinpeng Deng,Xuemei Zeng,Xian Qin,Shuangqian Yan

Ferroptosis has emerged as a novel approach to suppress tumor growth through the iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides, providing new opportunities for cancer therapy. However, the effectiveness of ferroptosis is impeded by the substantial neutralization of reactive oxygen species (ROS), generated through the Fenton reaction, by the high level of glutathione in cancer cells. Here we report a titanium metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived method to create black TiO 2 nanoparticles with excellent photocatalytic performance. The nanoparticle has a narrow bandgap of 1.02 eV, multiple discrete gap states, and a high density of oxygen vacancies (46.2 %), facilitating ROS generation under 1064-nm light irradiation. When coated with a tannic acid/Fe 3+ layer, the resulting nanocomposite possesses the ability to deplete glutathione concentration, preventing the newly generated ROS from being neutralized and promoting ferroptotic cancer cell death. Complemented by photothermal and chemodynamic effects, in vivo experiments demonstrate a high tumor inhibition rate of 89.8 %. The utilization of MOF-derived nanomaterials represents a universal strategy, offering a solution for ferroptosis-based therapy in solid tumors and contributing to the development of smart, optically active materials with diverse applications in biological contexts.
