Strengthening effect of α-ZrP nanosheet inclusions on corrosion resistance and wear resistance of NiP deposits

Yahui He,Shihong Zhang,Yi He,Hongjie Li,Teng He,Ruxia Song,Bo Liu,Zhifei Zhang,Yi Fan

Ni-P/α-ZrP composite coatings were successfully prepared by electroless plating, in which α-ZrP nanosheets were synthesized by reflow method. The surface morphology, element composition, structure and valence composition of the composite coating were analyzed by SEM, EDS, XRD and XPS, respectively. In the reciprocating friction experiment and electrochemical test, the corrosion and wear behaviour of the composite coatings were analyzed. The results show that α-ZrP nanosheets can significantly improve the corrosion and wear resistance of Ni P alloys. With the enrichment of α-ZrP nanosheets, the properties of coatings showed a tendency of increasing first and then slightly decreasing. Ni-P/α-ZrP (1.00 g/L) coating has the lowest porosity and the best corrosion resistance, and its corrosion rate (6.01 × 10 −3  mm/a) is about 1/5 of that of pure Ni P coating (3.12 × 10 −2  mm/a). Ni-P/α-ZrP (1.50 g/L) coating has the best wear performance, its average coefficient of friction (COF) is reduced from 0.568 to 0.167, and the specific wear rate is reduced from 7.13 ± 0.42 (× 10 −6 ) to 0.36 ± 0.06 (× 10 −6 ) (about 1/20 of pure Ni P coating).

Synthesis and Characterization of α-ZrP@CHI Drug Deliver System

Yu Shiyong,Gao Xuechuan,Zhang Renfei,Li Zhao,Tan Zhibing,Su Haiquan

This paper described the controlled synthesis and release properties of a new kind of multifunctional drug-release system which was prepared by encapsulation of zirconium bis-(monohydrogen orthophosphate) monohydrate (α-ZrP) with chitosan (CHI). As obtained the α-ZrP@CHI nanocomposites were found to possess the structural features of both α-ZrP and CHI. The release properties of the α-ZrP@CHI nanocomposites were evaluated using Gentamicin sulfate as the model drug. And α-ZrP@CHI composites showed a prolonged drug release time compared with α-ZrP, which can be attributed to the unique lamellar structure and the encapsulation with CHI. The controlled synthesis of α-ZrP@CHI nanocomposite thus provided a new opportunity for future development of delivery vehicles.

High-toughness, low-constant epoxy/α-ZrP layered composites for advanced antenna packaging

Chaoyang Wu,Guojun Du,Wenqi Wang,Jianyang Yuan,Xiaoqing Du,Qihui Chen,Yaqing Liu

Antenna packaging, which is designed to protect electronic components and ensure long-term stability, often employs epoxy resin (EP) composites because high mechanical strength, low dielectric constant and ease of molding satisfy design requirements, yet the highly cross-linked molecular network which leads to poor fracture toughness. In this work, a lamellar aerogel scaffold with different exfoliation α-ZrP flakes was fabricated by the ultrasonic-assisted exfoliation and subsequent freeze-casting technique. An alternating-layered epoxy/α-ZrP composite was made by infiltrating epoxy resin into the aerogel scaffold. The layered epoxy/α-ZrP composite consists of 99 wt% epoxy, in contrast to the scaffold, which contains 1 wt% α-ZrP. It exhibits outstanding fracture toughness, 1.4 times that of neat epoxy, and demonstrates low dielectric constant due to the anisotropic α-ZrP aerogel scaffold, which can be used for antenna packaging. Further studies reveal the effect of exfoliation time on the dimensions and dispersion of α-ZrP flakes, as well as the mechanical properties of epoxy/α-ZrP composites. The crack propagation path and fracture morphology were observed by Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), based on which the toughening mechanisms of epoxy/α-ZrP layered composites were discussed.

Orientation of Ultrathin α-ZrP Nanosheets in Aqueous Epoxy Resin for Anticorrosive Coatings

Xiaobo Zhu,Qingqing Yan,Yue Yu,Haichao Zhao,Qunji Xue,Liping Wang

Two-dimensional layered materials have attracted wide attention owing to their many desirable properties. In particular, its outstanding barrier properties can effectively improve the impermeability of organic polymer coatings. However, the barrier properties of the coating depend to a large extent on the dispersion and orientation of the nanosheets in the coating. Here, monoamine-capped poly(etheramine) is inserted into the synthesized α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) to obtain water-dispersible nanosheets with regular shapes and controllable thicknesses. In addition, the effects of the orientation (random and parallel) of α-ZrP nanosheets on the permeability and corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coatings have been systematically studied, and the results are in good agreement with the theoretical model. Compared with the pure coating, the impedance of the coating with high aspect ratio nanosheets and the coating with high aspect ratio nanosheets arranged in parallel increased by 83.5 and 221.7 times, respectively, after immersion for 60 days. This provides a strategy and theoretical basis for the two-dimensional nanosheet to improve the long-term service of anticorrosion coatings.

Enhancing flame retardancy, anti-impact, and corrosive resistance of TPU nanocomposites using surface decoration of α-ZrP

Sensen Han,Shuangshan Li,Dongyan Liu,Yu Dong,Ziqi Gao,Yanxi Zhang,Qingshi Meng

The development of polyurethane composites with significant flame retardancy and corrosion resistance for widening its practical application is a great importance. In this study, supramolecular wrapped α-ZrP (MCP@ZrP) was prepared via self-assembly of melamine, cobalt ions (Co 2+ ) and phytic acid (PA) on the surfaces of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). It was found that both compatibility and dispersion of α-ZrP sheets in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrices were improved with the incorporation of organic supramolecular components in TPU/MCP@ZrP nanocomposites. Moreover, their fire-retardant characteristic was significantly enhanced, along with effective suppression of smoke and toxic gas emission. By adding 5 wt% MCP@ZrP, peak heat release rate, total heat release, total smoke production, and total CO production of such nanocomposites were reduced by 35.66%, 18.01%, 15.52%, and 41.42%, respectively. The generation of a continuous and dense char layer benefited from well-dispersed MCP@ZrP nanohybrids, which resulted in tortuous effect to impede heat diffusion and prevent the evaporation of volatile gasses. By means of the barrier effect of ZrP, TPU/MCP@ZrP composite films also showed improved anticorrosion performance. Effective interfacial adhesion, achieved by combining MCP supermolecules and α-ZrP sheets, offers a viable approach to improve protective properties of TPU nanocomposites. Highlights Supramolecular-wrapped α-ZrP was prepared via self-assembly strategy. MCP@ZrP showed good dispersion and interface adhesion within TPU matrices. MCP@ZrP enhanced the flame retardancy and mechanical performance of TPU. MCP@ZrP preventing smoke and toxic gas evaporation.

Preparation of P-CDs functionalized α-ZrP flake fillers and enhancing anti-corrosion properties of epoxy coating

Tao Li,Zhiping Zhu,ShangMing Zhou,Huo Yang

2D nanofillers can effectively improve coatings' barrier and anti-corrosion properties but are less compatible with coatings and prone to agglomeration. In this paper, glucose-derived phosphorus-doped carbon dots (P-CDs) were prepared as dispersants, and functionalized α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) was prepared by combining with α-ZrP through π-π interactions, which showed good dispersion and compatibility in waterborne epoxy (WEP). The corresponding modified WEP coating is prepared on Q235 substrates through the scrape coating method. The effect of fillers on the physical and chemical properties of the coating was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), neutral salt spray test, and immersion test. The results of the electrochemical test show that the |Z| 0.01 Hz value of the coating prepared by P-CDs@ZrP as the filler after soaking in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 30 d is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the WEP coating, and the corrosion resistance is greatly improved. The salt spray and soaking tests prove that the prepared P-CDs@ZrP coating has excellent barrier properties and corrosion resistance. Besides, P-CDs can also act as an effective passivation agent, which could adsorb on the surface of the Q235 substrate and form a passivation film, preventing further corrosion of the substrate. This study provides a new way to enhance the corrosion resistance of the coating.

Rapid recovery of cesium from geothermal water by zinc ferrocyanide composite membrane with exfoliated α-ZrP as enhancer

Lihan Liu,Yuhan Guo,Yuxin Wang,Senjian Han,Lina Xu,Zengyu Ma,Shiqiang Wang,Tianlong Deng,Zhenyu Liao

Zinc ferrocyanide (ZnFC) composites exhibit high selectivity for cesium, but conventional bulk forms suffer from slow mass transfer. In this work, ZnFC was anchored onto exfoliated α-phosphazene ( E -ZrP) nanosheets via an in-situ growth method to construct ZnFC@ E -ZrP composites, which were further fabricated into ZnFC@E-ZrP/PSf adsorption membranes. The two-dimensional E-ZrP support inhibited ZnFC agglomeration and enhanced Cs + mass transfer through shortened diffusion paths and a surface P–OH-induced electronegative field. Experimental results indicated that ZnFC@ E -ZrP exhibited Cs + adsorption properties significantly surpassing that of the α-ZrP support, along with good acid-base stability and recyclability. The corresponding membrane combined rapid transport from E -ZrP with precise capture from ZnFC, achieving adsorption equilibrium within 5 min in filtration and maintaining >98% Cs + recovery from geothermal brine under high ionic competition. The strategy demonstrated in this work enables the design of efficient materials for rapid cesium separation.

A multi-scale porous design enabling in-situ α-ZrP growth for high flame-retardant SLA-printed photopolymers

Zehua Zhuo,Rui Wang,Shaoyun Chen,Jianhong Gao,Cuifang Cai,Yanyu Zheng,Xiaoying Liu,Bo Qu,Qinghui Chen,Dongxian Zhuo

Stereolithography (SLA) is highly valued in high-end manufacturing for its exceptional design flexibility. However, the inherent flammability of photosensitive resins significantly limits their safe application. This study designed and synthesized an intrinsically flame-retardant photosensitive resin (TPH) containing phosphorus and sulfur elements. The TPH resin was blended with a phosphorus-containing reactive diluent and an ionic liquid (TFS) to prepare a photosensitive resin (TPHP) suitable for SLA technology. An innovative approach was employed where macroscopic pore structures were constructed through 3D printing, and due to phase separation between the ionic liquid and the 3D-printed samples, microscopic pores were incorporated within the SLA-printed specimens, a porous framework was formed. These pores served as reaction sites for in-situ growth of a nano-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) layer on the surface. Thermogravimetric and flame retardancy tests demonstrated that the incorporation of α-ZrP significantly enhanced the material's thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression properties. Compared with unmodified samples, the char residue was increased to 47.3%, the limiting oxygen index reached 29.0%, and the UL-94 rating achieved V-0. Cone calorimetry tests showed reductions in peak heat release rate, total heat release, and total smoke production by 42.1%, 65.4%, and 75.1%, respectively. The results indicate that this work provides a new strategy for flame-retardant 3D printing. It resolves the intrinsic conflict between flame retardancy and printability by combining surface pore engineering with in situ growth to achieve surface functionalization without sacrificing printability.

Nano-Brick Wall Architectures Account for Super Oxygen Barrier PET Film by Quadlayer Assembly of Polyelectrolytes and α-ZrP Nanoplatelets

Dongmei Han,Yiqing Luo,Qing Ju,Xujing Xiao,Min Xiao,Naiyu Xiao,Shou Chen,Xiaohua Peng,Shuanjin Wang,Yuezhong Meng

Nanobrick wall hybrid coating with super oxygen barrier properties were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using a quadlayer (QL) assembly of polyelectrolytes and nanoplateles. A quadlayer assembly consists of three repeat units of polyacrylic acid (PAA), poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and layered α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). PDDA with positive charges can assemble alternatively with both α-ZrP and PAA with negative charges to form nanobrick wall architectures on the surface of PET film via the electrostatic interaction. The lamellar structure of α-ZrP platelets and the dense QL assembly coating can greatly reduce the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of PET film. Compared to pristine PET film, the OTR of PET (QL)19is reduced from 57 to 0.87 cc/m2/day. Moreover, even with 19 QLs coating, PET (QL)19composite film is still with an optical transparency higher than 90% and a haze lower than 10%. Therefore, the transparent PET (QL)ncomposite films with super oxygen barrier properties show great potential application in food packaging and flexible electronic packaging. Keywords:nanobrick;electrostatic interaction;oxygen barrier;packaging applications

Yiqian Lv,Jingmao Zhao,Baomin Fan,Hassan Murtaza,Jingbao Wang,Weixiao Jing,Liuwei Chao

Synergistical passive barrier enhancement and active self-healing has been an emerging tactic for developing prominent anti-corrosion coatings. Herein, a cerium/2-methylimidazole metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) was that is in-situ grown on ultrathin α-ZrP nanosheets with outstanding dispersibility. The parallel arrangement of α-ZrP-based nanosheets within the epoxy matrix was driven by shear force from blade-coating technology optimizing the coating's physical barrier and self-repairing capability. This advancement may herald a new era in designing smart coatings and offering potent protection against diverse corrosion types such as filiform corrosion.

Effects of propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalation of α-ZrP on the corrosion resistance and tribological properties of electroless Ni-B coatings

Liping Yan,Siming Yan,Yi He,Yi Fan,Xinyu Cheng,Huilian Zhou,Jiamin Zhong,Zhiyuan Li,Jinxue Song,Hongjie Li

In this study, propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalated α-ZrP nanocomposites (denoted by P-α-ZrP and E-α-ZrP, respectively) were synthesized. The effects of propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalated α-ZrP nanocomposites and their reinforcements on the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of Ni-B coatings were investigated and compared. The morphology and structure of the three composites were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and particle size analysis. Both propylamine and ethylenediamine intercalation increase the layer spacing of α-ZrP, but do not change the lamellar structure of α-ZrP. The EIS test results show that both Ni-B/P-α-ZrP and Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coatings have significantly lower corrosion rates than Ni-B and Ni-B/α-ZrP composite coatings. Compared to Ni-B/α-ZrP, the corrosion rates are reduced by 32 % and 76 % respectively. The R ct values for Ni-B/P-α-ZrP and Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coatings are also distinctly higher than Ni-B/α-ZrP, with Ni-B/E-α-ZrP having the highest values. In addition, Ni-B/P-α-ZrP and Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coatings are both harder than Ni-B/α-ZrP and have lower average coefficients of friction and wear rates than Ni-B/α-aZrP. Among them, the Ni-B/E-α-ZrP composite coating has the highest microhardness (1163.64 ± 21.20 HV) and the best wear resistance. The wear rate is reduced by 87 % and 65 % compared to Ni-B and Ni-B/α-ZrP composite coatings respectively. In conclusion, both P-α-ZrP and E-α-ZrP are better than α-ZrP in terms of enhancement, with E-α-ZrP being the best.

Improvement of the Abrasion and Corrosion Resistance of a Waterborne Epoxy Coating by α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) with Dual Corrosion Inhibition Effects

Wei Ren,Qiuying Gao,Yujie Guo,Changhua Li,Xiaoyu Mao,Haijiao Sun,Yi He,Yang Bai

The introduction of poly(tannic acid) (PTA) and cerium ion [Ce(III)] on the surface of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) endowed the α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III)/waterborne epoxy composite coating with enhanced corrosion protection and wear resistance performances. The successful preparation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) was confirmed through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. PTA improved the compatibility between α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) and the waterborne epoxy resin due to the presence of organic groups from tannic acid. The wear resistance test indicated that the incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) effectively reduced the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to analyze the corrosion protection performance of unbroken coatings and the self-healing ability of scratched coatings. The incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) improved the protection performace distinctly. In addition, α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) endowed the composite coating with dual corrosion inhibition effects, originating from the PTA film, to prevent the penetration of corrosive media and a dense film that came from the Ce(III) cation. The waterborne epoxy system with enhanced corrosion and wear resistance in this paper broadens the application of α-ZrP.
