Thetreatment of infected wounds is currently a major challenge in clinical medicine, and enhancing antimicrobial and angiogenic capacity is one of the most common strategies. However, the current treatment makes it difficult to balance the antimicrobial effect in the early stage and the angiogenic effect in the later stages of wound healing, leading to an increased rate of poor prognosis. Here, we present a nanoconductive hydrogel EF@S-HGM, consisting of HGM with ECGS, FMLP, and SWCNT. The host–guest supramolecular macromolecule (HGM) hydrogel is biocompatible and can be injected in situ in the wound. The endothelial cell growth factor (ECGS) accelerates vascular remodeling and repairs wounds by promoting the proliferation of endothelial cells. N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (FMLP) recruits neutrophils and increases the antimicrobial capacity. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) make the hydrogel conductive, enabling the hydrogel to utilize the endogenous electric field in the wound to recruit multiple kinds of cells. In addition, we found that the EF@S-HGM hydrogel activates the glucocorticoid receptor senescence pathway and promotes the formation of NET, which enhances the antimicrobial effect. As tissue-engineered skin, the conductive hydrogel EF@S-HGM is a promising material for regenerative medicine that may provide a potential option for the treatment and care of infected wounds and significantly improve patient outcomes and prognosis.

Recently, flexible sensors based on conductive hydrogels have been widely used in human health monitoring, human movement detection and soft robotics due to their excellent flexibility, high water content, good biocompatibility. However, traditional conductive hydrogels tend to freeze and lose their flexibility at low temperature, which greatly limits their application in a low temperature environment. Herein, according to the mechanism that multi−hydrogen bonds can inhibit ice crystal formation by forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules, we used butanediol (BD) and N−hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA) monomer with a multi−hydrogen bond structure to construct LiCl/p(HEAA−co−BD) conductive hydrogel with antifreeze property. The results indicated that the prepared LiCl/p(HEAA−co−BD) conductive hydrogel showed excellent antifreeze property with a low freeze point of −85.6 °C. Therefore, even at −40 °C, the hydrogel can still stretch up to 400% with a tensile stress of ~450 KPa. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibited repeatable adhesion property (~30 KPa), which was attributed to the existence of multiple hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, a simple flexible sensor was fabricated by using LiCl/p(HEAA−co−BD) conductive hydrogel to detect compression and stretching responses. The sensor had excellent sensitivity and could monitor human body movement. Keywords:intelligent gel;antifreeze conductive hydrogel;flexible sensor

Hydrogel sensors attained increasing attention due to their excellent mechanical and sensing properties. However, it is still a big challenge to fabricate hydrogel sensors with multifunctional properties of transparent, high stretchability, self-adhesive and self-healing ability. In this study, chitosan as a natural polymer has been employed to construct a polyacrylamide-chitosan-Al 3+ (PAM-CS-Al 3+ ) double network (DN) hydrogel with high transparency (>90 % at 800 nm), good electrical conductivity (up to 5.01 S/m) and excellent mechanical properties (strain and toughness as high as 1040 % and 730 kJ/m 3 ). Moreover, the dynamic ionic and hydrogen bond interaction between PAM and CS endowed the PAM-CS-Al 3+ hydrogel good self-healing ability. In addition, the hydrogel possesses good self-adhesive ability on different substrates, including glass, wood, metal, plastic, paper, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and rubber. Most importantly, the prepared hydrogel could be assembled into transparent, flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and high sensitive strain/pressure sensor for monitoring human body movement. This work may pave the way for fabricating the multifunctional chitosan-based hydrogels which has potential application in the fields of wearable sensor and soft electronic devices.

The rapid development of flexible electronics motivates the design and synthesis of stable hydrogels that possess good stretchability and conductivity under harsh environment. The long-term durability of traditional hydrogels generally fails at high temperatures. In this work, a high-temperature-tolerant, self-healable hybrid hydrogel showing excellent water-locking and adhesive properties was developed through ultraviolet curing of acrylamide (AM) and hyper-branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) in highly salted ethylene glycol-water solution. Ethylene glycol was used as a crystallization inhibitor and greatly enhanced the solubility of sodium acetate (NaAc). The fabricated hydrogel can retain 75 % of its initial weight for 9 hours at 100 °C or 88 % of its initial weight for 77 hours at 15 % relative humidity (RH) environment. The dehydrated gel was flexible (tensile strain > 1700 %) and conductive after storing at high temperatures (e.g. 100 °C) for a long term. Moreover, the highly salted hydrogel showed remarkable water adsorbing ability in the air: it can recover to its original weight after losing water at high temperature or low humidity conditions. In addition, the separated hydrogel fragments could heal into a single piece in 30 s, and the hydrogel showed reversible adhesiveness to both organic (6.2 kPa for pigskin, 28 kPa for wood) and inorganic (111.9 kPa for glass, 135.5 kPa for iron) substances for at least 5 cycles. This work provides a facile way of obtaining multi-functional conductive hydrogels that can work at high temperatures, demonstrating long-term prospects in engineering applications.

Hydrogels with conductive properties hold significant promise in the realm of flexible electronics, owing to their pliability, outstanding conductivity, and diverse functionalities. Nevertheless, the majority of conductive hydrogels are prone to being brittle and easily damaged; as such, they are not adapt to cold environments, which seriously hinders their practical applications. Therefore, hydrogels that possess both conductivity and anti-freezing, as well as moisturizing, capabilities have garnered considerable interest, and these hydrogels can work stably in harsh environments. Phytic acid (PA), which mainly exists in plant seeds, is a kind of natural compound widely existing in nature that can be recycled; it provides electrical conductivity and anti-freezing to hydrogels. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing and moisturizing capabilities was prepared by incorporating PA into a polyacrylamide/gelatin hydrogel. The incorporation of PA endowed the hydrogel with an excellent conductivity of 5.8 S·cm−1. In addition, robust hydrogen bonding was formed between water and phytic acid molecules, and the hydrogel demonstrated remarkable anti-freezing and water retention. On this basis, hydrogels can be used for human winter sports sensing and low-temperature environmental alarm devices to provide faster rescue. This study provides a novel method for the development of hydrogels with low-temperature stability, and provides a revelation for the application of anti-freezing hydrogels in icy and snowy environments.

Although conductive hydrogel-based flexible electronic devices have superb flexibility and high conductivities, they tend to malfunction in dry or frigid areas. Herein, an ultralow-temperature tolerant, antidrying, and conductive composite hydrogel is designed for electronic skin applications on the basis of the synergy of double-cross-linked polymer networks, Hofmeister effect, and electrostatic interaction and fabricated by in situ free radical polymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid and acrylic acid in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol) and conductive MXene sheets, followed by impregnation with LiCl. Thanks to the synergy of LiCl and the charged polar terminal groups of the synthesized polymers, the composite hydrogel can not only bear an ultralow temperature of −80 °C without freezing but also maintain its original mass. Meanwhile, the resultant hydrogel possesses satisfactory self-regeneration ability benefiting from the moisturizing effect of LiCl. The conductive network of MXene sheets greatly improves the ionic conductivity of the hydrogel at low temperatures, exhibiting an ionic conductivity of 1.4 S m–1 at −80 °C. Furthermore, the electronic skin assembled by the multifunctional hydrogel is efficient in monitoring human motions at −80 °C. The antifreezing and antidrying features along with favorable ionic conductivity, high tensile strength, and outstanding flexibility make the composite hydrogel promising for applications in frigid and dry regions.

Conductive hydrogels are promising active materials for wearable flexible electronics, yet it is still challenging to fabricate conductive hydrogels with good environmental stability and electrical properties. In this work, a conductive MXene/LiCl/poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) hydrogel system was successfully prepared with an impressive conductivity of 12.2 S/m. Interestingly, the synergistic effect of MXene and a lithium bond can significantly accelerate the polymerization process, forming the conductive hydrogel within 1 min. In addition, adding LiCl to the hydrogel not only significantly increases its water retention ability, but also enhances its conductivity, both of which are important for practical applications. The flexible strain sensors based on the as-prepared hydrogel have demonstrated excellent monitoring ability for human joint motion, pulse, and electromyographic signals. More importantly, based on machine learning image recognition technology, the handwritten letter recognition system displayed a high accuracy rate of 93.5%. This work demonstrates the excellent comprehensive performance of MXene-based hydrogels in health monitoring and image recognition and shows potential applications in human–machine interfaces and artificial intelligence.

Conductive hydrogels have recently gained impressive attention in flexible sensing. However, their low sensing limit and poor interface matching have raised great concern during the practical application. Therefore, incorporating excellent stretchability and adhesiveness into conductive hydrogel is highly desirable but still be a huge challenge. In this study, we synthesized composite hydrogels with desired properties by utilizing the synergistic role of hemicellulose (HC) and conductive two-dimensional material MXene. As a result, the synthesized hydrogels showed good self-adhesion (3.12 KPa on the skin), great stretchability (>1700 %), and satisfactory electrical conductivity. These multifunctional hydrogels operated as adaptable sensors, adeptly capturing the nuanced signals emanating from an array of human motions. They exhibited an expansive strain tolerance, swift reactivity, and an enhanced acuity in detecting even the slightest deformations (GF = 2.1). Our research provides new insights for creating stretchable, self-adhesive, and functional hydrogels for sensing applications.

In recent years, nature-inspired conductive hydrogels have become ideal materials for the design of bioactuators, healthcare monitoring sensors, and flexible wearable devices. However, conductive hydrogels are often hindered by problems such as the poor mechanical property, nonreusability, and narrow operating temperature range. Here, a novel skin-inspired gel is prepared via one step of blending polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, and glycerin. Due to their dermis-mimicking structure, the obtained gels possess high mechanical properties (fracture stress of 1044 kPa, fracture strain of 715%, Young’s modulus of 157 kPa, and toughness of 3605 kJ m–3). Especially, the gels exhibit outstanding strain-sensitive electric behavior as biosensors to monitor routine movement signals of the human body. Moreover, the gels with low temperature tolerance can maintain good conductivity and flexibility at −20 °C. Interestingly, the gels are capable of being recovered and reused by heating injection, cooling molding, and freezing–thawing cycles. Thus, as bionic materials, the gels have fascinating potential applications in various fields, such as human–machine interfaces, biosensors, and wearable devices.

Preparation of natural polymer-based highly conductive hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties for applications in flexible electronics is still challenging. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare lignin-based Fe3+-rich, high-conductivity hydrogels via the following two-step process: (1) lignin hydrogels are prepared by cross-linking sulfonated lignin with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) and (2) Fe3+ ions are impregnated into the lignin hydrogel by simply soaking in FeCl3. Benefiting from Fe3+ ion complexation with catechol groups and other functional groups in lignin, the resultant hydrogels exhibit unique properties, such as high conductivity (as high as 6.69 S·m–1) and excellent mechanical and hydrophobic properties. As a strain sensor, the as-prepared lignin hydrogel shows high sensitivity when detecting various human motions. With the flow of moist air, the Fe3+-rich lignin hydrogel generates an output voltage of 162.8 mV. The assembled supercapacitor of the hydrogel electrolyte demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 301.8 F·g–1, with a maximum energy density of 26.73 Wh·kg–1, a power density of 2.38 kW·kg–1, and a capacitance retention of 94.1% after 10 000 consecutive charge–discharge cycles. These results support the conclusion that lignin-based Fe3+-rich, high-conductivity hydrogels have promising applications in different fields, including sensors and supercapacitors, rendering a new platform for the value-added utilization of lignin.

Conductive hydrogels with anti-freezing and moisturizing properties have attracted huge attention for application in flexible electronics, which can work stably in harsh environments. However, it is challenging and urgent to enhance the environmental adaptability of hydrogels, while maintaining high conductivity. Here, a highly conductive hydrogel featuring remarkable freezing resistance and moisture-holding ability is fabricated via incorporating phytic acid (PA) into polyacrylamide/chitosan hydrogels. The addition of PA not only endows the hydrogels with a marvelous conductivity of 0.105 S cm−1 due to the ionization of PA, but also promotes their antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria. Besides, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between PA and water molecules, the hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility and great conductivity (0.041 S cm−1) at −20 °C and could function well after storage for 15 days under ambient conditions. More importantly, the hydrogels can serve as reliable electrodes for electrocardiography (ECG) signal detection. Meanwhile, with the imperceptible strain perceivability (0.1% of strain) and a high gauge factor of 10.87, the hydrogel wearable sensors are capable of precisely monitoring and recognizing both drastic and subtle human motions under diverse working environments. This work provides a novel and promising method for developing flexible wearable electronics with environmental stability.

Conductive hydrogels are ideal materials for preparing wearable strain sensing devices due to their flexibility and stretchability. However, most hydrogels exhibit poor freezing resistance and weak water-holding ability, thus hindering the working range of hydrogel-based sensors in extreme environments. Here, a conductive hydrogel featuring conspicuous anti-freezing and water retention abilities was prepared by integrating amylose (AMY) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/glycerol/NaCl hydrogel. AMY possesses a number of hydroxyl groups, which could interact with PVA and glycerin via hydrogen bonds, enhancing the toughness of the hydrogel. Meanwhile, based on the strong hydrogen bonding between glycerol and water molecules, the hydrogel displayed water-retaining properties after 7 days of storage in an open environment. The synergistic action of NaCl and glycerol prevented the crystallization of water at low temperatures, endowing the hydrogel with outstanding conductivity and stretchability at −20 °C. Furthermore, the hydrogel-based wearable strain sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity (GF = 2.55), fast response/recovery time, and good durability and biocompatibility, which accurately detected joint movements and physiological signals at room temperature or under extreme conditions. Therefore, conductive hydrogels would possess significant application prospects in health detection, disease diagnosis, and artificial intelligence.
