Dynamic deformation mechanism in submicro-laminated copper with interlamellar graphene multilayers

Yifei Peng,Guohu Luo,Yongxiang Hu,Ding-Bang Xiong

The plastic deformation of metals is usually sensitive to loading rates, and such rate-dependent behaviors are influenced by various factors, among which inclusions especially nanoinclusions such as graphene and carbon nanotubes were found to have dramatic influence on the deformation mechanisms of metallic materials. However, relative studies are basically focused in quasi-static regimes. Here, the full spectrum of deformation behaviors of graphene/copper (Gr/Cu) submicro-laminated composites at wide-range strain rates (from 10 −4 /s to ≥10 8 /s) and various temperatures (room temperature and -70 °C) are provided, and relevant mechanisms, especially when deformed at high strain rates and low temperatures, are studied elaborately. Unlike conventional copper materials whose strain rate sensitivity drops dramatically (∼50%) with decreasing temperature, Gr/Cu submicro-laminates has an enhanced strain rate sensitivity that decreases limitedly (∼10%) with temperature. Microstructural analysis revealed that a graphene-assisted deformation mechanism dominated the dynamic compression of Gr/Cu composites, where graphene inclusions act as lubricants that enhanced the deformation ability of the submicro-laminates. Further analysis on copper matrix revealed that dislocation dominated deformation switch to twinning dominated deformation from high to extreme strain rates loading, and extreme loading conditions as well as graphene inclusions are prerequisites for high-density deformation twins in Gr/Cu submicro-laminates.

Visualization of strain rate based on mechanoluminescence tailing

Man Wang,Jianqiang Xiao,Jian Zhang,Lei Zhao,Yingdan Song,Zhichao Liu,Ting Wang,Xuhui Xu,Jie Yu

Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials have the ability to emit light under mechanical force, allowing for visible mechanical force distribution and making them valuable for applications in smart textiles and wearable sensors. Detecting the force rate is crucial for applications, such as haptic feedback devices and mechanical monitoring, but visualizing the speed of strain has not been achieved yet. In this study, we have successfully visualized the strain rate by monitoring the ML tailing lengths of red, green, and blue (RGB) ML materials, including CaF 2 : Tm 3+ , CaF 2 : Eu 3+ , and CaF 2 : Tb 3+ phosphors. These materials exhibit varying ML tailing lengths at identical rotation speed of friction force, due to their distinct lifetime of the emitting centers. By incorporating these RGB ML phosphors into a composite film, the discrepancies in ML tailing lengths across different colors become visible, with these differences becoming more pronounced as the rotation speeds rise. Ultimately, the visualization of rotational speed in bearings was achieved successfully based on the vivid color changes in the ML tailing length at different speeds.

Rate-Dependent Fracture Behaviors of Agar-Based Hybrid Double-Network Hydrogels

Haiyan Yin,Min You,Hui Yu,Xinlei Si,Yong Zheng,Wei Cui,Lin Zhu,Qiang Chen

The advanced development of soft yet tough hydrogels with high crack resistance significantly extends their application scope from biomedical applications for tissue engineering to emerging electronics applications for soft flexible devices. We investigated the fracture toughness of agar/PAAm hybrid double-network (DN) hydrogels at various strain rates. In large deformations without precut, the loading–unloading curves of agar/PAAm hybrid DN hydrogels exhibit rate-independent hysteresis. However, the fracture toughness of the precut agar/PAAm hybrid DN hydrogel exhibits a transition region around strain rate (ε̇) as 0.12 s–1, and rate-independent toughness is observed at ε̇ < 0.12 s–1, while the fracture toughness decreases significantly if ε̇ > 0.12 s–1. We also discover that the fracture toughness scales with strain rate as Γ ∼ (dλ/dt )−0.58 at a high strain rate. A possible mechanism is proposed to interpret this phenomenon. It is believed this work provides new insight into the fracture behavior of hybrid DN gels.

Exploring the impact of CoFe2O4 additives morphology on the properties of a novel strain-rate sensitive composite material

Zhenji Zhou,Caiyin You,Feng Li,Na Tian,Yao Chen,Qian Chen

Various additives in smart materials are attracting wide attention owing to the improved adaptable functions, such as the ferromagnetic additive. However, the effect of additives' morphology is not well investigated, causing inconsistent phenomena reported for the same additive. In this work, the spherical and rod-shaped CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared by varying the reaction process of solvothermal, and introduced as dispersed phases into strain rate-sensitive materials to fabricate new strain-rate sensitive composite materials. The influence of magnetic particle morphology on its rheological performance was investigated. The results showed that the strain-rate sensitive composites with rod-shaped CoFe2O4 (RCFO) have a higher storage modulus and viscosity than the ones with spherical CoFe2O4 (SCFO) nanoparticles. The relationship between shear rate and viscosity indicates that all samples exhibited significant shear thinning effects in the range of shear rates studied, and the RCFO nanoparticles are useful for achieving a higher viscosity in comparison to the SCFO nanoparticles at the same shear rate. This work proves that the morphology of additives plays an important role in adjusting the property of smart materials and is expected to present some principles to choose the suitable morphology of additives for the design of new magneto-rheological materials.

The effect of strain rate on the tensile properties of nitrile butadiene rubber with dual crosslinked networks

Li Qiuying,Li Xifei,Liu Dekun,Xu Ruiyang,Wei Shaohua

Requirements for the material with high tensile strength and elongation at break are proposed with the development of soft and stretchable electronics. The nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) crosslinked by coordination bonds has excellent tensile properties and is expected to be used in the flexible electronics field, but the effect of strain rate on tensile properties of crosslinked NBR needs to be further analyzed. In this work, the NBR with dual crosslinked networks was prepared by methods of double ligands crosslinking, covalence-coordination crosslinking, and bimetallic coordination crosslinking. Furthermore, the strain rate sensitivity of tensile properties of NBR with dual crosslinked networks was studied by considering the strain rate as a variable. The results indicated that the strength of the coordination bonds formed by the second ligand had significant effects on the tensile properties of NBR: The coordination bonds with low strength could protect the integrity of the crosslinked network, but the tensile properties of NBR with two different kinds of strong coordination bonds would be more dependent on the strain rate. In covalence-coordination crosslinked or bimetallic crosslinked NBR, the synergy between the two crosslinked networks could not only increase the strength and elongation at break of NBR but also reduce the influence of strain rate on the tensile properties of NBR.

Investigation of the Mechanical Behaviors of Waterborne Polyurethane: The Critical Influence of Hard Segment Content Over Various Strain Rates

Mingping Zhou,Jiaqiang Xiong,Dingzhe Che,Qiang Wu,Shichao Zhang,Denghui Wang,Fei Gao,Zheng Zhang,Jiping Yang

In protective applications, polyurethane (PU) is a key material, yet the microstructural mechanisms governing its dynamic mechanical properties are not well understood. This study investigates the influence of hard segment content on the low strain rate compression and high strain rate impact properties of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) by modulating the NCO/OH ratio. Mechanical responses are characterized using a universal testing machine and a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. Additionally, the hydrogen bonding and microphase separation structure are analyzed using FTIR, DSC, DMA, and SAXS. These findings reveal that the glass transition temperatures ( T g DSC and T g DMA ) shift toward higher temperatures with increasing hard segment content, which is attributed to the intensified hydrogen bonding cross-linked network, as corroborated by FTIR and SAXS analyses. The WPU demonstrates a pronounced strain rate sensitivity across a broad range of strain rates (10 −4 –10 4 s −1 ). Notably, the 45 wt.% hard segment WPU523 sample shows heightened sensitivity, attributed to complex hydrogen bonding heterogeneity and a higher Herman's orientation factor during loading, the key to WPU's dynamic mechanical response.

Energy absorption and storage of nanofluidic solid–liquid composite material under high strain rates

Wei Huang,Haiqi Feng,Lin Yu,Renduo Xu,Jiayi Liu,Yangwei Wang

Efficient energy absorption and dissipation are crucial for the development of novel protective materials under intensive dynamic loadings. Nanofluidic solid–liquid composite materials (NLCs) provide a promising pathway to engineer such materials owing to their rapid and reversible energy absorption and storage performance. In this study, we conducted systematic experiments on nanoporous SiO2 based NLCs to gain a better understanding of the dynamic mechanical behavior and the underlying energy absorption and storage mechanisms under compressions with varying strain rates. Our findings indicate that the energy absorption in terms of dissipation and storage under the repeat compressive loadings includes two stages. The initial stage indicates the maximum energy absorption capacity, which is efficiently improved by the adding electrolyte solution and the retreatment. The stable energy absorbing stage represents the reversible energy absorption and storage capacity of the NLCs. Based on the noticeable strain rate effect, a three-stage mechanism is proposed to explain the significant increase of energy absorption capacity with the varying compressive strain rates. The superior reusable energy absorption capacity of NLCs holds great promise for their use as excellent energy-absorbing materials under intensive impulsive loadings.

Incorporating Metal Oxides to Significantly Improve the Ablative Performance of Silicone Rubber-Based Composites at 10% Tensile Strain Rate under Coupled Thermal-Mechanical-Oxidative Conditions

Zhaohui Lu,Shengtai Zhou,Chuxiang Zhou,Hao Zhang,Huawei Zou,Xiancheng Ren

Silicone rubber is able to provide excellent thermal protection and accommodates large deformation rates. However, the ablative properties of silicone rubber deteriorate significantly when it is subjected to ablation at large strain rates. To attempt to address the above problem, different types of metal oxides were adopted to enhance the ablative properties of vinyl methyl silicone rubber (VMQ), especially for enhancing the ablative performance at 10% tensile strain rate. The results revealed that the combined use of iron(II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) was instrumental in improving the ablative properties of VMQ-based composites at 10% tensile strain rate and a heat flux of 1 MW/m2. To further enhance the ablative performance, the ratio of Fe3O4 and ZrO2 was optimized through an experimental design method. Results showed that when the ratio of Fe3O4 and ZrO2 was 1.4:1, the maximum back-face temperature of a 3 mm thick silicone rubber composite remained below 200 °C, while the surface temperature was well above 2000 °C when it was stretched to a tensile strain rate of 10%. This work provides a reference for preparing high-performance flexible thermal ablative composites that exhibit promising application in aerospace and fire protection sectors, among others.

Dynamic compressive response of zirconium diboride-silicon carbide composites at high-strain rates

Mi Wang,Dewen Kong,Lingling Wang,Youbin Li,Ting Cai

The quasi-static, dynamic compression experiments and micromechanical model were employed to declare the dynamic compressive response of ZrB 2 –20%SiC composite at high-strain rates. The quasi-static compressive strengths were measured to determine the range of initial microcrack length in ZrB 2 –20%SiC composite. The effects of the strain rate on dynamic compressive strength, critical stain, as well as fracture mechanisms were discussed based on experimental results. Dynamic mechanical properties of ZrB 2 -based composites display obvious strain rate dependence. The dynamic increase factor in the compressive strength shows a rapid increase above a transition strain rate of 1228 s −1 . Moreover, a micromechanical model considering initial microcrack lengths is used to predict dynamic compressive strengths, which agree with the experimental results. Additionally, the critical strain has a linear increase tendency with the increase of strain rate. The dynamic compressive fracture mechanism of ZrB 2 –20%SiC composite is relative to the combination effect between strain rate and microstructure. The size of flaw distribution is critical below the transition strain rate resulting in bigger fragments, whereas the flaw density is primary with more and smaller fragments above the transition strain rate.

Experiment and mesoscopic modelling on the dynamic compressive behaviors of a new carbon fiber-reinforced cement-based composite

Zhangyu Wu,Jinhua Zhang,Hongfa Yu,Haiyan Ma,Hao Wang,Guijia Zhang,Bing Yan

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on the compressive behaviors of a new carbon fiber-reinforced cement-based composite (CFRCC) that is composed of magnesium oxysulfate cement, carbon fiber and some chemical admixtures . Parametric studies on the effects of carbon fiber content and strain rate on the compressive behaviors of CFRCC, are conducted using a series of quasi-static and dynamic compressive tests . The research item includes the failure morphology, stress-strain curve, dynamic increase factor (DIF), etc. Besides, a three-dimensional (3D) mesoscale modelling approach is proposed to simulate and analyze the mechanical responses and the failure mechanisms of CFRCC subjected to dynamic compressive loading , where the random dispersion of chopped fibers are realistically considered. The results indicate that the cracking and failure modes of CFRCC are significantly affected by the bridging effect of carbon fibers randomly dispersed in cement matrix . With the increase of fiber content, the dynamic peak stress and peak strain of CFRCC at similar strain rates show an increasing and decreasing trend, respectively. An evident strain-rate hardening effect could be found on the initial elastic modulus and the peak stress of CFRCC as well. While the relationship between the DIF of CFRCC and the logarithm of strain rate could be described using a quadratic function . Moreover, the mesoscale modelling approach has been validated by a good agreement between the numerical and tested results, demonstrating the feasibility of the developed mesoscale model in simulating and investigating the dynamic behaviors of CFRCC. All in all, the CFRCC has proven to be of great significance in resisting to impact loads , and more insights should be provided into its dynamic properties.

Tensile properties of flexible carbon nanotube film/PVA composite at various strain rates

Yonghui Li,Zhengqiang Lyu,Ping Wang,Yan Zhang,Changwei Li,Jinxiang Gu,Dongmei Hu,Qingwen Li

The quasi-static tensile properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites have already been extensively studied, while their impact tensile properties under high rates have rarely been investigated. In this work, CNT film/PVA composites were prepared by impregnation and hot press curing, whereas CNT films were prepared by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD). Instron 3365 and the miniaturized split Hopkinson tensile bar (SHTB) were used for tensile tests at various strain rates. The results show that the tensile properties of PVA-impregnated CNT film are significantly improved, and the strain rate effect is remarkable. The tensile properties are best when the mass fraction of PVA is 1.5%. At a low strain rate of 0.001 s −1 , the maximum stress and energy absorption (EA) of CNT composites are 502.5 MPa and 63.6 MJ/m 3 , respectively. And at the high strain rate of 3100 s −1 , the maximum stress and EA of CNT composites are 969.0 MPa and 166.4 MJ/m 3 , respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the failure morphologies at tensile fracture of composites under different strain rates. At low strain rate, the failure mode is the pulling fracture of tube bundles and the crushing of polymers, while at high strain rate is the folding and spring back of tube bundles, as well as the debonding of polymers.

Hydrogels with brain tissue-like mechanical properties in complex environments

Jingyu Wang,Yongrou Zhang,Zuyue Lei,Junqi Wang,Yangming Zhao,Taolin Sun,Zhenyu Jiang,Licheng Zhou,Zejia Liu,Yiping Liu,Bao Yang,Liqun Tang

In surgical training and experimental research, brain tissues immersed in cerebrospinal fluid often exhibit complex deformation and strain rate effects that can compromise their reliability and stability. Therefore, it is essential to develop a high-fidelity human brain tissue simulant material that serves as a physical surrogate model to understand its mechanical behavior, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, the existing simulant materials have failed to meet the required mechanical properties. This study presents a composite hydrogel consisting of both a rigid polysaccharides network (Sodium alginate and Pectin) and a flexible polyacrylamide network, exhibiting brain tissue-like mechanical properties under various solution environments and strain rates. The results show that nonlinear mechanical behavior and good similarity under various external environments (artificial cerebrospinal fluid, normal saline, deionized water, and air environments) and different strain rates (0.001 s −1 ,900 s −1 ,1700 s −1 ). By analyzing the experimental data and theoretical analysis, we examine the effects of complex environments on the mechanical behavior of composite hydrogel and porcine brain tissue. Given that the properties of human brain tissue resemble those of porcine brain tissue, our work has significant reference value in realizing surgical training and advancing related research in biomedical engineering.
