Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an energy harvesting technology from widespread mechanical energy based on the combined effects of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. TENG devices are promising to be integrated into human daily life and their stability in the ambient environment is quite crucial to guarantee robust output. This requirement is increasing exponentially for powering various wearable/portable electronics and still remains as a challenge. Herein, contact and separation mode-based, humidity- and temperature-resistant TENG (HT-TENG) is fabricated utilizing ethylene vinyl acetate and polytetrafluoroethylene tape as frictional layers. By harvesting biomechanical energy, the device could generate peak-to-peak open circuit voltage of ≈210 V and short-circuit current of ≈12.85 μA, respectively. The as-fabricated device is tolerant to fluctuating relative humidity ranging from 10% to 60% and temperature ranging from 10 to 60 °C. Further, the device is shown to charge 22 and 47 μF commercial capacitors to 3 V using rectifier bridges, glowing light-emitting diodes, powering digital wrist watches, and a calculator. Thus HT-TENG as an efficient power source reliably operates not only in typical conditions, but also in desert and frigid environments, thereby extending the applicability and commercialization of the device in the global environments.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with sliding-mode have developed rapidly in the field of energy harvesting and sensing. However, its surface wear and low electric output performance usually limit its applicability. Herein, a mixture of hexadecane with onion-like carbon (OLC) lubricant is added to the interface between polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film and steel to enhance the triboelectrical and tribological performance . During dry friction , the friction pair is severely worn and the current output decreases gradually with the transfer of a large amount of PTFE debris in a short period. The introduction of hexadecane partly resolves the problems such as friction and wear with the reduction in the transfer of PTFE material. However, the current output decreases gradually during the friction process because there is still some slight material transfer in the interface. The electrical output of TENG is further enhanced with the addition of OLC, and its tribological properties are comparable or better than oil-based TENG. The short-circuit currents (I sc ) of the oil-based TENG and the oil-OLC-based TENG are 1.5 times and 5 times that of the TENG in the dry friction state, respectively. Also, the coefficient of friction (COF) of oil-OLC-based TENG is reduced by about 75.3% compared with dry friction state. The oil-OLC-based lubricant reduces the transfer film formation, increases the effective contact area, and squeezes the air at the interface. Also, part of the OLC rolls between the two friction layers, forming a "micro-bearing", further reducing the generation of transfer film. This study provides a novel way to improve the output efficiency and prolong the service life of TENG.

The development of intrinsic flame retardant triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) employed at extremely high temperatures and directly in contact with flames attracts researchers’ attention but is tough to achieve. In this work, we develop a fire-resistant and self-extinguishing TENG (FRTENG) that can be used as a power generator in extreme application scenarios, for example, firefighting, personal protection, or applying in extreme high-temperature conditions. The FRTENG profits by the extraordinary thermal characteristics of liquid-crystalline polyarylate copolymerized with poly(ethylene terephthalate), whose flame retardancy, antidripping, and triboelectric properties have been significantly enhanced. This FRTENG is fire-resistant and antidripping after 15 s of trying, while the traditional triboelectric materials were totally burned by flames under the same circumstances. Our FRTENG can maintain over 53% of original electrical output performance even after 15 s of combustion (∼500 °C) while providing excellent flame retardancy missing in the existing TENGs. It is believed that the fire-retardant and self-extinguishing FRTENG will be a path-breaking device for lifesaving wearable applications.

Triboelectric nanogenerators have attracted extensive attention in energy harvesting due to its light weight, low cost, high flexibility, and diversity of function. However, deterioration in terms of mechanical durability and electrical stability of the triboelectric interface during operation, which are the results of material abrasion, severely limits their practical applications. In this paper, a durable triboelectric nanogenerator inspired by a ball mill was designed by using metal balls in hollow drums as carriers for charge generation and transfer. Composite nanofibers were deposited onto the balls, increasing the triboelectrification with the interdigital electrodes in the inner surface of the drum for higher output and electrostatic repulsion to each other for lower wear. Such a rolling design cannot only increase mechanical durability and maintenance convenience, where the filler can be easily replaced and recycled but also collect wind power with the decreased wearing of materials and sound efficiency in comparison with the typical rotation TENG. In addition, the short circuit current shows a strong linear relationship with the rotation speed in a wide range, which can be used to detect wind speed, thus showing potential applications in distributed energy conversion and self-powered environmental monitoring systems. Keywords:triboelectric nanogenerator;wind energy;low wear;rotation speed;self-powered sensor

In recent years, renewable and sustainable triboelectric nanogenerators have attracted attention due to their high energy conversion rate, and enhancing their functionality further contributes to their applicability across various fields. A pH-sensitive triboelectric nanogenerator (pH-TENG) has been prepared by electrostatic spinning technology, with anthocyanin as the pH indicator and environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the substrate. Among many friction-negative materials, the pH-TENG exhibits the best combination with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and yields an open-circuit voltage of 62 V, a short-circuit current of 370 nA, and a transferred charge of 21.8 nC. At a frequency of 3 Hz, it can charge a 4.7 μF capacitor to 2 V within 45 s, effectively powering a thermometer. Furthermore, the presence of anthocyanin does not affect the pH-TENG’s power generation performance and enables the monitoring of a wide range of environmental pH changes, with an ΔE change of 28.8 ± 7.6. Therefore, pH-TENG prepared with environmentally friendly materials can bring new available materials to the biological and medical fields.

Electronic skin that is deformable, self-healable, and self-powered has high competitiveness for next-generation energy/sense/robotic applications. Herein, we fabricated a stretchable, self-healable triboelectric nanogenerator (SH-TENG) as electronic skin for energy harvesting and tactile sensing. The elongation of SH-TENG can achieve 800% (uniaxial strain) and the SH-TENG can self-heal within 2.5 min. The SH-TENG is based on the single-electrode mode, which is constructed from ion hydrogels with an area of 2 cm × 3 cm, the output of short-circuit transferred charge (Qsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc), and short-circuit current (Isc) reaches ~6 nC, ~22 V, and ~400 nA, and the corresponding output power density is ~2.9 μW × cm−2when the matching resistance was ~140 MΩ. As a biomechanical energy harvesting device, the SH-TENG also can drive red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) bulbs. Meanwhile, SH-TENG has shown good sensitivity to low-frequency human touch and can be used as an artificial electronic skin for touch/pressure sensing. This work provides a suitable candidate for the material selection of the hydrogel-based self-powered electronic skin.Keywords:stretchable;self-healable;hydrogels;triboelelectric nanogenerator;e-skin

As wearable devices in the fields of medical health, human–computer interaction, and motion detection continue to diversify in their materials and forms, they show vast application potential. Cellulose materials are emerging as prominent materials for fabricating flexible wearable electronic devices because of their favorable skin compatibility, cost-effectiveness, and abundance. However, there is little research on the use of kapok cellulose in wearable electronics. This study addresses this knowledge gap by exploring the high-yield production and waste recycling potential of kapok cellulose. To overcome the limitations of conventional cellulose films, such as poor flexibility, high haze, and limited light transmittance, a kapok cellulose nanofiber film (KCNF) with a transparency of > 90 % and a tensile strain of > 20 % is prepared. The use of the KCNF as a friction electric material in the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) improves its electrical output performance by 228 % and permits its comfortable long-term attachment to the skin for self-powered tactile sensing applications, including game control, text input, and smart medical devices. This study demonstrates that the exploration of KCNF materials expands the options available for developing wearable electronic devices with numerous potential applications.

High-tension site wounds are frequently accompanied by challenges associated with hypertrophic scarring. The key to achieving scar-free healing is the creation of a mechanical environment conducive to scar-free skin regeneration. Herein, simple rolling punctures are utilized on angle transform molds to develop cat tongue prick bionic angle-adjustable microneedles (TPMNs) to maintain a firm grip on the periwound skin, thereby reducing tissue tension. The integration of TPMNs with triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) enables excellent conductive and triboelectric properties. The system can provide a stable spatial electric field around the wound to promote cell migration. As the microfluid reaches the TPMNs, the self-driving force is enhanced by a unique angle design to control the microfluid flow rate. Sufficient evidence has shown that TPMNs expedite wound contraction and skin tissue regeneration while concurrently reducing scar formation in mouse trauma model experiments. The innovative TPMNs-TENGs synergistically provides a highly functional platform for wound tension relief, which is suitable for scar treatment in this study and potentially extends to the construction and regulation of smart wearable devices.

Liquid–solid triboelectrification technology provides a new way to collect hydropower, while the high cost, complexity, and easily damaged microstructures of the triboelectric nanogenerator electrode materials highly limit their practical applications. In this study, a new type of organic coating triboelectric nanogenerator is fabricated using acrylate resin as the friction layer material. To further improve the solid–liquid triboelectrification performance and the hydrophobicity of the coating, fluorine-containing materials were added to the acrylic resin. As a non-microstructure-dependent film, its preparation process is simple and large area prepared, which can be achieved by modifying some commonly used anticorrosion and antifouling coatings in engineering. This packaged organic coating triboelectric nanogenerator provides good stability and high-output performance, which can easily light several commercial light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on a model ship by collecting the wave energy during the voyage. This new type of triboelectric nanogenerator based on the coating material has the advantages of simple process, low cost, and large-area preparation, which combines the performance of the coating itself with the power generation function, and have potential promising practical applications in ocean energy collection and utilization, self-powered sensing, and other fields.

The as-designed triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) generates an excellent electric output, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of TENGs made from commercial dielectric materials.
The as-designed TENG-based sensor can detect worn debris in oils at least down to 0.01 wt% and water contamination down to 100 ppm, which are much better than other online monitoring methods (particle > 0.1 wt%; water > 1000 ppm).
A high-selective monitoring system is successfully developed for distinguishing water contamination from the multi-mixed contaminants in lubricating oils.

Algal blooms have become a challenging problem in conventional water treatment processes due to numerous negative effects on human health and ecosystems. Photocatalysis has turned out to be a promising solution with the environmental and economic benefits beheld, but the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron and hole inhibited the application in practice. This study proposed a rotating triboelectric nanogenerator (R-TENG) as a self-powered bias for photocatalysis to enhance the algal removal efficiencies. R-TENG harvest waste water wave energy from coagulation tank to convert it into stable DC voltage (31 V) and DC current (27 μA). TiO 2 nanotubes (TNT) serving as the anode in the photocatalysis with TENG system achieved complete inactivation of algae (>97 %) after 7 h of reaction, which was increased by 13.9 % compared with photocatalysis. This enhanced performance was attributed to the improvement of active species generation (e.g., •O 2 - , •OH and h + ). During algal inactivation, the active species destroyed photosynthetic activity (decline of Chlorophyll a), antioxidant system (decrease of superoxide dismutase, catalase and malondialdehyde) and membrane in algal cells. Given the ubiquitous existence of algal cells in surface water, this work offers a novel method to develop high-performance electro-assisted photocatalysis for algal removal.

The conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) has attracted attention in recent years, particularly in the field of wearable sensor. In this work, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) with carboxylate groups were compounded with MXene to serve as both the negative friction layer and the electrode in assembling a TENG with nylon. The synergistic effect between TOCNF and MXene was analyzed to disclose its influence on the performance of the as-prepared TENG. The MXene/TOCNF composite film, containing 50 wt% MXene, exhibited the best performance among all specimens, and the assembled TENG demonstrated excellent performance with an open-circuit voltage of 210 V, a short-circuit current of 0.84 μA, and a transferred charge of 8.6 nC. The excellent output performance might be attributed to the presence of carboxylate and F-containing groups in the composite film. This flexible TENG also functioned as a self-powered sensor, generating sensitive and stable signals in response to human motion and writing. This work verifies the simultaneous use of robust and flexible nanocellulose/MXene composite films as both the friction layer and electrode, which could spur the development of TENGs using sustainable and abundant cellulosic materials.
