To expand the field of high-value utilization of lignin. The degraded deep eutectic solvent lignin-grafted poly (N-Vinyl caprolactam) (DES-lignin-g-PNVCL) was synthesized by modified DES-lignin and NVCL via the combination of activators regenerated by electron transfer-atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET-ATRP). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1 H NMR, X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were used to characterize the structure and performance of DES-lignin-g-PNVCL. The results indicated that the PNVCL and DES-lignin-g-PNVCL were successfully prepared by ARGET-ATRP. The lowest critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNVCL was 35.75 °C. Due to different strength of hydrogen bond , different energies were required, so the LCST of the polymer can be regulated. When the molar ratio of phenolic hydroxyl group in degraded DES-lignin to 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BiBB) was increased from 1:1 to 1:7, the grafting rate of DES-lignin-Br was increased from 32.87% to 60.84%, and the LCST of DES-lignin-g-PNVCL was decreased from 47.98 °C to 27.88 °C. The LCST of DES-lignin-g-PNVCL was increased from 30.98 °C to 44.64 °C when the addition amount of DES-lignin-Br was increased from 20 mg to 200 mg. The LCST of DES-lignin-g-PNVCL was increased from 27.20 °C to 39.86 °C when the ratio of DMF/water was increased from 1:4 to 4:1. The LCST of DES-lignin-g-PNVCL was decreased from 52.10 °C to 31.02 °C when the concentration of DES-lignin-g-PNVCL was increased from 0.5 mg/mL to 2.5 mg/mL. The equation represented the relationship between LCST and influencing factors was obtained, the good predictability provided a tactics for preparing desired LCST thermo-responsible polymer.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are recognized as promising environmentally friendly absorbents for carbon capture. While a considerable body of research has been dedicated to the development of ternary DESs, the energy performance of these systems, especially under low-dilution conditions, remains a relatively under-explored area. In this study, we developed a novel quaternary DES system by introducing water and ethylene glycol as diluents into the ternary DES [ChCl][MEA]-5% M. The impact of diluent incorporation was systematically evaluated through (1) simulated flue gas CO 2 capture experiments, (2) NMR and FTIR spectral analyses, and (3) CO 2 desorption experiments with regeneration heat evaluations. Energy efficiency assessments were subsequently conducted to quantify the overall performance enhancement. Key findings revealed that the formulated quaternary DES achieved a substantial viscosity reduction while maintaining 90.1 % of the baseline absorption capacity. The regeneration heat of [ChCl][MEA]-5%M−20 %H 2 O and [ChCl][MEA]-5%M−20 %EG was found to be reduced by 46.87 % and 46.62 %, respectively, in comparison with that of 30 wt% MEA. Remarkably, the diluted system exhibited 74.4 % lower heat exchanger capital cost and sensible heat loss compared to conventional ternary DESs, with normalized capacity of 4.07 mol CO 2 /kg. These results demonstrate that water/ethylene glycol-modified quaternary DESs present a technologically superior and economically viable alternative for industrial carbon capture applications, effectively balancing absorption efficiency, energy demand, and operational stability.

To develop a green solvent for lignin dissolution, the most fundamental aspects of its mechanism must be elucidated. Understanding the thermodynamic behaviors is of significant importance for designing novel deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to dissolve lignin. Herein, the heat of dissolution of lignin in acidic, alkaline or neutral DESs was determined by high-precision solution microcalorimetry, and comprehensively investigated the effect of physicochemical properties of DESs on the heat of dissolution and solubility of lignin. The resulted observed that lignin dissolution in alkaline DESs was more vigorous exothermic than that in acidic and neutral DESs. The thermodynamic parameters for the dissolution of lignin in the DESs were calculated from the heat of dissolution and solubility. The positive free energy change indicated that the process of lignin dissolution was non-spontaneous and unfavorable thermodynamically. By analyzing the changes of enthalpy and entropy of lignin solution systematically, lignin dissolution in DESs was enthalpically favorable and controlled by the entropy term. Especially, the interaction entropy predominantly made the free energy change unfavorable for lignin dissolution. The achieved thermodynamic findings could serve as the basis to construct robust DESs for lignin biorefinery.

The separation of ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) and ethane (C 2 H 6 ) is crucial for the production of down-stream chemicals in petrochemical industry. However, the currently used technologies still suffer from high energy intensity and contamination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), stimulating researches on screening greener separation media and methods. Developed in this work were deep eutectic solvents (DESs) containing tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl) and n -decanoic acid (DA) for absorption separation of C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 . Chemical structures of DESs were confirmed using NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy, and their densities, viscosities as well as the thermal decomposition temperatures were measured. C 2 H 4 solubilities in these DESs were found to be higher than 0.0632 mol/kg at 313 K and 1.0 bar, higher than most ionic liquids reported so far. Importantly, tunable C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 selectivities ranging from 0.86 to 1.31 were achieved via altering the ratio of compositions in DESs, while the absolute C 2 H 4 solubilities remained almost unchanged, which was attributed to the change in free volume and better affinity of DA and TBACl for C 2 H 4 . The Henry’s constants ( H m ), enthalpy changes (Δ sol H ), Gibbs free energy changes (Δ sol G ) and entropy changes (Δ sol S ) for the dissolution of C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 in the DESs were calculated through thermodynamic analysis. In addition, quantum chemical calculations elucidated the origin of the different dissolution behaviors of the two gases in DESs. Furthermore, energy-efficient regeneration of DESs could be carried out by only depressurizing without heating, and no visible decrease in separation performance was observed after ten consecutive absorption–desorption cycles. Overall, the findings in this work may provide utility guidance for designing absorbents targeting separation of C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 with variable composition.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are complex substances composed of two or three components, wherein hydrogen bond donors and acceptors engage in intricate interactions within a hydrogen bond network. They have attracted extensive attention from researchers due to their easy synthesis, cost-effectiveness, broad liquid range, good stability, and for being green and non-toxic. However, studies on the physical properties of DESs are still scarce and many theories are not perfect enough, which limits the application of DESs in engineering practice. In this study, twelve DESs were synthesized by using choline chloride and betaine as HBAs, and ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol 600, o-cresol, glycerol, and lactic acid as HBDs. The variation rules of their thermal conductivity and viscosity with temperature at atmospheric pressure were systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that the thermal conductivity of the 1:4 choline chloride/glycerol solvent was the largest at 294 K, reaching 0.2456 W·m−1·K−1, which could satisfy the demand for high efficiency heat transfer by heat-transferring workpieces. The temperature–viscosity relationship of the DESs was fitted using the Arrhenius model, and the maximum average absolute deviation was 6.77%.

Carbazole is an important organic chemical raw material with high added value, mainly derived from crude anthracene. In this research, three quaternary ammonium salts (QASs), containing triethylmethylammonium chloride (TEMAC), tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC) and tetrapropylammonium chloride (TPAC), were innovatively used to separate carbazole from model anthracene oil by forming deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The results indicated that TEAC showed the highest separation ability among three QASs. Afterwards, the influences of mass ratio of TEAC to model anthracene oil (MO), stirring time, extraction temperature and initial concentration on the separation effect of carbazole were investigated. Under the optimized conditions (25℃, 25 min, mass ratio 1:5), the extraction efficiency (EE), distribution coefficient (DI) and selectivity (SE) of carbazole could reach up to 91.25 %, 24.26 and 66.09 %, respectively. The purity and yield of carbazole product separated from model anthracene oil were 91.02 % and 76.89 %, respectively. Moreover, carbazole with purity of 90.42 % could be separated from real crude anthracene with TEAC under the above optimized conditions. In addition, environment friendly water was used to regenerate the TEAC. After recycled for five times, the extraction ability of TEAC for carbazole did not change obviously. Finally, the hydrogen bond (N H…Cl) and van der Waals interaction (C H…π) existed between QASs and carbazole were revealed by FT-IR analysis and quantum calculations. The green and novel method presented in this work has implications for the separation of other high value-added products from coal tar.

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) shows excellent absorption performance in the field of CO 2 capture. It is considered as a new green absorption solvent to replace monoethanolamine. In the industry, the presence of water not only affects the structural stability of the solvent, but also affects its thermophysical properties. In this work, three kinds of hydrophobic DES were prepared. Based on the study of their structural characteristics and thermal stability, the density and viscosity of DES with water mixture were measured in the temperature range of 298.15 ∼ 338.15 K at atmospheric pressure. It was demonstrated that the trace water did not destroy the structure of DES, but it formed hydrogen bonds with DES. The increase water destroyed the structure of DES and formed hydrogen bonds with hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), respectively. Moreover, the hard sphere model was applied to study the viscosity, and after introducing the binary interaction parameter, the average absolute relative deviation of the mixture reduced to 4.4 ∼ 7.7 %.

The escalating disposal of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) poses significant environmental challenges but also offers substantial opportunities for resource recovery. In this work, we introduce a recycling strategy using a green, cost-effective ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of guanidine hydrochloride, ethylene glycol, and maleic acid. The DES can achieve >99.5 % leach efficiency of lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co) at 100 °C, 9h, and L/S=50. The kinetic study found that the chemical reaction rate at the interface was the key to controlling the leaching process. The study of leaching mechanisms found that the acidity and coordination ability of DES were the main driving forces of leaching. Co loaded in the DES phase can almost precipitate out by using oxalic acid, achieving the separation of Li and Co. After reusing three times, the maximum load of Li in the DES phase reached 4.1 mg/g. These outstanding performances, along with the avoidance of the use of hazardous chemicals and the reduction of high costs, confirmed that the DES possesses a promising prospect for sustainable, large-scale application in efficiently leaching valuable metals from LiCoO 2 .

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been used for the pretreatment of lignocellulose and showed selective dissolution for different lignocellulosic components. In this study, six new ternary DESs were synthesized on the basis of anhydrous oxalic acid DES by adding alcohol, acid, and deionized water, respectively, including choline chloride/anhydrous oxalic acid/ethylene glycol (ChCl-OA-EG), choline chloride/anhydrous oxalic acid/glycerol (ChCl-OA-G), choline chloride/anhydrous oxalic acid/lactic acid (ChCl-OA-LA), choline chloride/anhydrous oxalic acid/malonic acid (ChCl-OA-MA), choline chloride/anhydrous oxalic acid/10% H2O (v/v) (ChCl-OA + 10% H2O), and choline chloride/anhydrous oxalic acid/20% H2O (v/v) (ChCl-OA + 20% H2O). The lignin in bagasse was extracted and separated with these ternary DESs, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Two-dimensional Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence (2D HSQC), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) were used to characterize the molecular structures of lignin and cellulose. The results showed that under the mild reaction condition of cooking at 90 °C for 4 h, all six ternary DESs effectively dissolved hemicellulose in bagasse, the DES ChCl-OA-MA prepared with malonic acid significantly increased the removal of lignin (71.64%) by breaking the β-O-4′ ether bond of lignin molecules, and the crystallinity of cellulose was also significantly improved (67.65%).Keywords:ternary deep eutectic solvents;bagasse;lignin;structure

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were proposed for the extraction of polysaccharides from Poria cocos (PCPs). Six types of DESs were prepared, and the DES composed of choline chloride and oxalic acid was proved to be suitable. Based on the results of single-factor test, the Box-Behnken experimental design with response surface methodology was carried out, giving the optimal extraction conditions including mole ratio of 1:2 (choline chloride:oxalic acid) and extraction 15 minutes at 100°C. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the extraction yield (46.24% ± 0.13%) was 8.6 times higher than that of hot water. The reusability of DES was demonstrated by a 6-run test, and an extraction yield of PCP was 38.40% ± 0.23% after reusing for 6 times without adding any additional chemicals. Moreover, molecular weight distributions of the resulting PCP were analyzed, and then mainly distributed in the range of 753 to 3578 g/mol. Therefore, DESs were proved to be an excellent extraction solvent alternative to the extraction of PCP.

A new type of deep-eutectic solvents (DESs), consisting of ethylene glycol (EG) and sulfosalicylic acid dihydrate (SAD), were designed for efficient leaching valuable metals from cathode active materials (LiCoO2 and Li14.8Ni1.7Co8.5MnO30.5) of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for the first time. The as-prepared DESs possessed strong coordination ability and low viscosity, which were suitable for metal extraction. The influences of experiment parameters on extraction of Co and Li were systematically investigated, and the leaching mechanism and kinetics were elucidated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, the leaching efficiencies of Co and Li from pure LiCoO2 reached 93.5% and 98.3%, while those of Co, Ni, Mn, and Li achieved 94.8%, 99.1%, 100%, and 100% from the spent Li14.8Ni1.7Co8.5MnO30.5, respectively. Results revealed that the Li+ ions located in the interlayer of layered LiCoO2 were replaced by H+ ions and entered into solution, while Co3+ ions in the skeleton structure were reduced and coordinated by EG and sulfosalicylic acid (SA) to form four soluble Co2+–SA complexes, realizing synergistic and efficient leaching of Li and Co from the LIB cathode active material. Moreover, Co and Li leaching kinetics conformed to the shrinking core model, in which the interfacial chemical reaction was the limiting step, and the apparent activation energies were separately about 77.38 and 79.54 kJ/mol.

TheArtemisia argyileaf (AL) has been used as a traditional medicine and food supplement in China and other Asian countries for hundreds of years. Phytochemical studies disclosed that AL contains various bioactive constituents. Among bioactive constituents, phenolic acids have been recognized as the main active compounds in AL. To the best of our knowledge, no research has been focused on extraction method for the bioactive phenolic acids from AL. Nowadays, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are emerging as a new type of green and sustainable solvent for efficient extraction of bioactive compounds from natural products. In the present study, an environmentally friendly extraction method based on DESs was established to extract bioactive phenolic acids from ALs. Diverse tailor-made solvents, including binary and ternary DESs, were explored for simultaneous extraction of four phenolic acids (3-caffeoylquinic acid, 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid, and 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid) from AL. The results indicated that the ternary DES composed of a 2:1:2 molar ratio of choline chloride, malic acid, and urea showed enhanced extraction yields for phenolic acids compared with conventional organic solvents and other DESs. Subsequently, the extraction parameters for the four phenolic acids by selected tailor-made DESs, including liquid–solid ratios, water content (%) in the DESs, and extraction time, were optimized using response surface methodology and the optimal extraction conditions were: extraction time, 23.5 min; liquid–solid ratio, 57.5 mL/g (mL of DES/g dry weight of plant material); water content, 54%. The research indicated that DESs were efficient and sustainable green extraction solvents for extraction of bioactive phenolic acids from natural products. Compared to the conventional organic solvents, the DESs have a great potential as possible alternatives to those organic solvents in health-related areas such as food and pharmaceuticals. Keywords:deep eutectic solvents;Artemisia argyileaves;phenolic acids;extraction;response surface methodology
