Boron (B), a frequently utilized metalloid fuel, has been garnering growing attention due to its elevated calorific value. However, the inert oxide layer (B 2 O 3 ) on the surface of B powder obstructs the transfer of oxygen, resulting low combustion efficiency and long ignition delay time. In this study, a range of binary oxidizers BiF 3 -Bi 2 O 3 is developed to enhance the ignition and combustion performance of B by leveraging the synergistic effect of the shell-breaking effect of BiF 3 and the rapid reaction kinetics of Bi 2 O 3 . A comprehensive investigation is conducted on the influence of the BiF 3 /Bi 2 O 3 ratio on thermal reaction, ignition delay time, burning rate, and pressure output. The TG-DSC data indicate that the B-BiF 3 reaction exhibits superior gas production capability, while the B-Bi 2 O 3 reaction offers greater advantages in terms of heat release. Furthermore, the combination of binary oxidizers (10 wt.%-20 wt.% BiF 3 ) is more efficient in promoting the ignition and combustion of B than a single metal oxidizer. The B-BiF 3 -Bi 2 O 3 composite materials exhibit a remarkably high burning rate of 14.81 m/s and a rapid pressurization rate of 1622.45 kPa/s. The enhanced ignition and combustion performance of B-BiF 3 -Bi 2 O 3 composite materials arises from the synergistic effect between the reactions of B-BiF 3 and B-Bi 2 O 3 . This study illustrates that the combination of BiF 3 and Bi 2 O 3 , two types of oxidizers, is an effective method to improve the combustion efficiency of boron.

To improve the combustion stability and ignition performance of thermite, B/NC/CuO micro particles were prepared from boron (B), nano copper oxide (CuO), and nitrocellulose (NC) as an energetic binder through the electrospray technique. The burning rate dependency on boron content, ambient temperature, and pressure was estimated by compressing B/NC/CuO micro particles into columns. Scanning electron microscopy results show that the sizes of these particles mostly lie in the range of 3–4 μm. The particles are ignitable and burn consistently with minor variations in the conditions: B content (8.3–17%), ambient temperature (−50–55 °C), and ambient pressure (0.02–0.1 MPa). The optimum formula was observed for micro particles with 11 wt% B content. Compared with the ball milling sample, the standard deviation of the burning rate of the electrosprayed sample was reduced by 32%. Combustion is barely affected by ambient pressure. Between −50 °C to 55 °C, the burning rate of B/NC/CuO increases by 14.16% from an initial rate of 13.35 mm⋅s−1. In addition, the laser ignition energy required for B/NC/CuO microparticles was also reduced from 70 to 45 mJ.Keywords:boron;thermite;burning rate;combustion performance

High-energy boron-based fuel aluminum-diboride (AlB2) has attracted much attention in the field of solid propellants. However, the low reactivity of AlB2hindered its further application. In this study, highly reactive AlB2@hydroxyl-terminated perfluoropolyether alcohol (AlB2@HTPFA) composites with a core–shell structure were prepared by coating AlB2with functionalized fluoropolymers by using a facile one-step in situ polymerization method. AlB2@HTPFA composites with varying polymer contents (0, 5, 10, and 15 wt%) were obtained. The in situ polymerization strategy enables precise control over the polymer coating thickness and interfacial interactions, which is critical for optimizing the reactivity and thermal stability of composites. The morphology and structure were characterized, and the microcore–shell structure of AlB2@HTPFA was obtained. Compared with raw AlB2, the combustion efficiency of coated fuel increased by 4.1%, 5.6%, and 7.5%, respectively, with varying polymer contents. Meanwhile, the reactivity of AlB2@HTPFA (5 wt%) was 0.65 MPa/s, which is ~1.5 times that of AlB2. Additionally, the ignition and combustion characteristics of AlB2@HTPFA were investigated by laser ignition experiments with potassium perchlorate (KP) as an oxidant. The results revealed that AlB2@HTPFA/KP composites showed a greatly reduced combustion duration compared to uncoated AlB2. The ignition and combustion enhancement mechanism of AlB2@HTPFA was proposed. During the ignition process, the existence of HTPFA can result in a pre-ignition reaction, thus raising its reaction activity. This work provided a promising candidate for high-energy fuel that can be used in energetic materials.

The combustion efficiency of Al is usually not high due to the influence of alumina film and agglomeration. Therefore, finding ways to enhance the ignition and combustion performance of Al is important. Herein, a simple one-step recrystallization method was used to prepare the Al@ citric acid (CA) sample. The results showed that the one-step recrystallization method could well coat CA on the outer surface of Al particles and could etch Al particles uniformly. After modification by CA, Al was more prone to thermal oxidation. Compared with pure Al, the addition of CA resulted in shorter ignition delay time, longer combustion time, increased combustion intensity, and weakened agglomeration degree. Condensed combustion products (CCPs) showed that Al sintered significantly during combustion, forming a large agglomerate. The CCPs of Al@CA were more dispersed and had many hollow shell particles. Furthermore, the addition of CA led to a decrease in the active Al content and an increase in the α-Al 2 O 3 content in CCPs. The above phenomena indicated that CA could significantly improve the combustion efficiency of Al. At last, the possible mechanism of CA promoting the ignition and combustion of Al was proposed. Overall, the enhancement of Al combustion performance by CA is attributed to the etching and coating effects of CA. Hoping that this paper will provide a possible pathway for exploring ways to improve Al combustion efficiency.

Aluminum-containing hydrocarbon fuels cannot fully release their energy due to the poor dispersion and easy agglomeration of aluminum nanoparticles (ANPs). To solve the issues, oleic acid (OA) was used to modify the surface of ANPs, and then Al@OA particles were incorporated into exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (JP-10) to form Al/JP-10 bi-phase system. Experimental and molecular simulation methods were used to analyze the stability, ignition, and combustion performance of the Al/JP-10 bi-phase system. The results show that at low temperatures, OA can improve the antioxidant and hydrophobic performance of Al@OA particles, which can effectively protect the ANPs from deep oxidation . At high temperatures, OA can accelerate the oxidative exothermic process of ANPs, and the Al@OA particles can shorten the ignition delay time of JP-10 droplets and intensify the combustion. Notably, when the ratio of Al and OA is 10:3 in the Al@OA particles, the Al/JP-10 droplet exhibits the shortest ignition delay.

Aluminum has been long and widely used in propellants, thermite, and pyrotechnics. However, the commonly used micron aluminum has the problems of slow burning rate and incomplete release of chemical energy in the combustion process. Therefore, finding ways to promote the ignition and combustion of aluminum is essential to enhance the performance of aluminum-based energetic materials. Herein, environmentally friendly tannic acid (TA) and tea polyphenols (TP) were used to surface modify aluminum to improve its combustion performance, respectively. The results showed that TA and TP could be coated on the outer surface of aluminum particles effectively by solvent evaporation induced self-assembly method. Heat was released during the thermal decomposition of the composite particles, which was clearly beneficial in promoting aluminum ignition. Ignition and combustion tests showed that after modification with TA and TP, the samples showed shorter ignition delay, increased combustion time, increased combustion intensity, and reduced agglomeration compared to pure aluminum. This revealed that the modified samples possessed better ignition and combustion properties. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the condensed combustion products showed that the products of pure aluminum possessed more active aluminum and aluminum nitride, while the samples modified with TA and TP had more γ-Al 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 , suggesting that TA and TP could effectively enhance the combustion efficiency of aluminum. In addition, TP showed better modification than TA, which may be related to the higher heat release during thermal decomposition of TP. Although TA and TP can improve the ignition and combustion performance of aluminum to some extent, the enhancement effect is limited. Considering that TA and TP possess good adhesion, perhaps they can play a better role in promoting as intermediate layers in the future. It is hoped that this paper can provide a new idea for the surface modification of aluminum.

The large energy release potential and highly adjustable combustion characteristics of nanostructured silicon compounded with sodium perchlorate (NaClO 4 ) make it one of the most attractive inorganic energetic materials. Compared with nanoporous silicon, the silicon nanowires prepared by metal-assisted chemical etching are easily loaded with NaClO 4 to obtain energetic materials, due to their one-dimensional array structure and tight contact with the silicon substrate. However, the high hygroscopicity of NaClO 4 greatly degrades the long-term storage property of the material, and must be addressed. In this study, sulfur, as a known stable and non-hygroscopic oxidant that reacts with nanostructured silicon, was impregnated on the silicon nanowires/NaClO 4 energetic material to insulate NaClO 4 from H 2 O in the ambient air. After sulfur impregnation, the mass of the sample increased by 8.7 mg after being exposed to 98% relative humidity at 25 °C for 12 h, while the sample without sulfur increased by 50 mg, indicating significant improvement in the hygrophobicity of the sulfur-containing energetic material. Laser ignition experiments showed that the combustion performance was only slightly affected after sulfur treatment. This work provides a new strategy for improving the hygrophobicity of silicon-based energetic materials, which can improve their applicability in micro-electromechanical systems.

Fluorine-based aluminum thermite have excellent ignition and combustion properties. Nonetheless, its combustion kinetics and energy release are hindered by slow mass diffusion and incomplete reactions. Therefore, this study successfully prepared an Al@PTFE composite with a core-shell structure, utilizing mechanical activation and sintering techniques, to enhance combustion properties and energy release rate. SEM, XRD, FTIR and XPS characterization results demonstrate the unique core-shell structure of the samples and the homogeneous distribution of elements on the surface. In comparison to the physical mixture, the Al@PTFE composite exhibits significantly higher values for P max (2.19 times), P max /Δt (11.30 times), and flame propagation velocity (4.5 times). Furthermore, the combustion duration required to reach the maximum flame height was reduced by 131.75 ms. The adsorption, decomposition and reaction processes of PTFE on the surface of aluminum particles were demonstrated based on RMD simulations. The promotion mechanism of PTFE on combustion in aluminum particles was elucidated.

As of 2020, the annual generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in China has surged to 235.12 Mt, and food waste (FW) accounts for more than 60 %. The most common treatment method is incineration, which accounts for 62.13 %. This research proposes a three-stage pretreatment method for FW that is suitable for incineration while recovering by-products and energy from the pretreatment process. The first stage is dehydration; as compared to hot air drying (HAD) processes, freeze drying (FD) exhibits a higher dehydration and oil preservation rate, allowing for the preservation of organic matter content and the recovery of freshwater resources from FW. The second stage is oil recovery; the FW extracted oil (FWEO) can be used to produce biodiesel, and this stage also helps to improve the effectiveness of the subsequent torrefaction process. The third stage improves the energy and fuel characteristics of the organic residue of FW and enhances the combustion performance by optimizing the torrefaction temperature. The solid fuel obtained at a torrefaction temperature of 350 °C shows the best combustion performance, with a solid yield of 35.76 %, a torrefaction temperature of 300 °C might be chosen to further improve the solid yield.

Based on N–B bonds, a novel strategy was developed for improving the energetic performance of tetrazoles. By employing the amino neighboring group participation, the azolyl borane compound 7 was selectively constructed, which exhibited excellent stability in water and air. This strategy solved the acidity problem of tetrazole as well as increasing the heat of detonation and combustion by 25% and 36%, respectively. Through laser ignition experiments, it also improved the combustion performance of tetrazoles. In DSC experiments, thermal decomposition temperatures of N–B covalent compounds were elevated as well. In an electrostatic potential calculation and sensitivity test, N–B covalent compounds exhibited good sensitivity (IS > 40 J and FS > 360 N). Through TG-DSC-FTIR-MS and in situ IR experiments, decomposition products were investigated to determine the next optimization stage for heat of detonation. It offered a significant potential for development to incorporate the N–B bond into nitrogen-rich compounds.

Aluminum (Al) has been widely used in solid composite propellants (SCPs) to increase the specific impulse. However, Al always subjects to coalescence , sintering to large agglomerations during combustion of SCPs resulting in larger two-phase flow losses. Herein, core-shell μ-Al@M(IO 3 ) x composites have designed and synthesized as a replacement for micron-sized Al (μ-Al) in the Al/AP/RDX/HTPB propellant with tunable combustion behavior. The results show the thermal reactivity and heat releases of SCP are largely enhanced by using these novel metal-based composites. With the inclusion of μ-Al@EGCG@Fe(IO 3 ) 3 (EGCG: Epigallocatechin gallate), the major exothermic peak is reduced by 29.1 °C compared to the reference propellant with a heat release increase up to 5475 J g −1 , exceeding that of the reference sample (86 J g −1 higher). The burn rates are increased with the inclusion of μ-Al@(MIO 3 ) x , while the pressure exponent is higher. The SCP-1 (0.3), SCP-2 (0.18) and SCP-4 (0.25) that have relatively low pressure exponent and high burn rates are good candidates for future applications. The major condensed combustion products (CCPs) of these SCPs are Al 2 O 3 , Al 2.81 O 3.56 N 0.44 , Al 4 C 3 , Al 2 OC, AlN and C 7 H 18 ClN. The agglomeration can be reduced with a minor inclusion of μ-Al@M(IO 3 ) x due to the enhanced interfacial reactions, and the average CCP sizes (0.5 μm for SCP-1 and SCP-4) are even smaller than that of initial μ-Al (1.2 μm).

Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SiOC was successfully fabricated on a cordierite monolith inner wall of a polystyrene (PS) sphere template through a colloidal crystal templating (CCT) method (named as 3DOM SiOC/cordierite). And perovskite-type LaCoO3 (LCO) mixed metal oxides, prepared by a facile sol–gel process, were coated onto the wall of the 3DOM SiOC/cordierite by a simple impregnation-sintering approach (named as LCO/3DOM SiOC/cordierite). The morphological and physicochemical properties studies indicate that the 3DOM structure has excellent connectivity, a large specific surface area, and applicable pore size. And the 3DOM structure plays an important role in preventing aggregation of the targeted catalyst particles, improving the contact condition between catalysts and soot as well as enhancing the reducibility of the LCO. The subsequent investigation on the catalytic performance of the 3DOM samples for diesel soot combustion shows that the 3DOM texture offers the catalyst a lower soot combustion temperature than a conventional catalyst, and the LCO/3DOM SiOC/cordierite reduces the combustion temperature even further while avoiding the rise of back-pressure effectively as well.
