Near-infrared radiation and heat dual-induced self-healing polyurethane with anti-abrasion ability

Biru Shi,Haohao Wu,Dekun Sheng,Wenhua Zhang,Xinxin Tian,Yinglu Sun,Haopu Xie,Jiahui Zhong,Xiangdong Liu,Yuming Yang

Disulfide bonds are widely used in self-healing materials owing to their dynamic nature under mild conditions. However, their practical application is severely limited by their low tensile strength . In this work, a linear polyurethane (CHPU) containing disulfide bonds and crystalline polycaprolactone diol is designed and synthesized. The infiltration of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles endows the CHPU/0.5PPy nanocomposites with a high tensile strength (26.23 MPa), high toughness (119.71 MJ/m 3 ), and a remote self-healing ability that can be triggered by heat or low-intensity (near-infrared) NIR radiation. A cut CHPU/0.5PPy film can recover 77.35% and 64.77% of its original tensile strength under 808 nm NIR radiation (118.46 mW/cm 2 ) and 50 °C, respectively. In addition, CHPU/0.5PPy can bear 300 reciprocating linear abrasion cycles (0.5 N load force) with a stable friction coefficient, delivering a performance superior to those of many commercial anti-abrasion polyurethane coatings.

MXene Loaded With Cu(2-x)Se Nanozyme for Nanocatalytic Tumor Therapy

Mengtian Lu,Tianye Zhang,Yue Yang,Xin Lin,Jin Huang,Yuan Sun,Tiedong Sun

Graphical The study innovatively combines etched/stripped monolayer Ti 3 C 2 MXene with Cu (2- x ) Se nanoparticles in a one-pot method. The synthesized Ti 3 C 2 /Cu (2- x ) Se nanocomposite has catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) -like activities combined with the excellent photothermal properties of MXene, which enhances the catalytic performance of Cu (2- x ) Se under near infrared (NIR) irradiation, and realizes the synergic photothermal catalytic treatment. Traditional tumor treatments (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, etc.) have certain limitations and can have serious negative effects, such as difficulty in cutting out tumors, damage to normal tissues, and complications. Ordinary nanozymes have low catalytic activity and require higher doses for treatment, which can increase in vivo toxicity and side effects. To address these limitations, we developed a Ti 3 C 2 MXene-based nanocomposite (Ti 3 C 2 /Cu (2- x ) Se) integrating Cu (2- x ) Se nanozymes with dual enzyme-mimicking activities (catalase and peroxidase) and MXene's photothermal properties. The Cu (2- x ) Se component catalyzes the decomposition of tumor-overexpressed H 2 O 2 into O 2 and cytotoxic ·OH, alleviating hypoxia while inducing oxidative stress. Simultaneously, MXene's high surface area and photothermal capability enhance nanozyme stability, biocompatibility, and catalytic efficiency under near-infrared irradiation. Notably, the photothermal effect amplifies enzymatic activity, enabling synergistic nanocatalytic-photothermal therapy. This synergy not only degrades glutathione to suppress tumor antioxidant defenses but also achieves targeted tumor ablation with reduced dosage requirements. Our work highlights a rational design of MXene-based nanozymes for enhanced multimodal tumor therapy, offering a paradigm for nanocomposite-driven disease treatment.

Synergistic bactericidal nanofibers with photothermal controlled release of antibiotics triggered by near infrared

Huiling Zhang,Xiansheng Zhang,Lei Liu,Xiaoyu Pang,Langfei Yang,Bingjie Xu,Jindan Wu,Dongming Qi

Herein, a type of nanofibrous membrane was prepared by co-electrospinning of polycaprolactone, poly(methyl methacrylate), polyaniline, and roxithromycin. The temperature of the nanofibers increased by 20 °C with 1 min of near infrared (NIR) radiation, and then the drug release was accelerated significantly. The bactericidal rate toward Staphylococcus aureus reached 99% with the synergistic effect of heat and antibiotics. This study provides a new approach to solving the problem of bacterial resistance by synergistic strategies involving photothermal and on-demand release of drugs.

Development of magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes combined with near-infrared radiation-assisted desorption for the determination of tissue distribution of doxorubicin liposome injects in rats

Shun Shen,Jinfeng Ren,Jun Chen,Xiaohui Lu,Chunhui Deng,Xinguo Jiang

For the first time, magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) combined with near-infrared radiation-assisted desorption (NIRAD) was successfully developed for the determination of tissue distribution of doxorubicin liposome injects (DOXLI) in rats. The magnetic MWNTs nanomaterials were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal process. Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 beads, with average diameters of ca. 200   nm and narrow size distribution, were decorated along MWNTs to form octopus-like nanostructures. The hybrid nanocomposites provided an efficient way for the extraction and enrichment of doxorubicin (DOX) via π–π stacking of DOX molecules onto the polyaromatic surface of MWNTs. DOX adsorbed with magnetic MWNTs could be simply and rapidly isolated through a magnetic field . In addition, due to the near-infrared radiation (NIR) absorption property of MWNTs, irradiation with NIR laser was employed to induce photothermal conversion, which could trigger rapid DOX desorption from DOX-loaded magnetic MWNTs. Extraction conditions such as amount of magnetic MWNTs added, pH values, adsorption time, desorption solvent and NIR time were investigated and optimized. Method validations including linear range, detection limit, precision, and recovery were also studied. The results showed that the proposed method based on magnetic MWNTs coupled to NIRAD was a simple, rapid and high efficient approach for the analysis of DOXLI in rat tissues.

Tissue-Engineered Bone Functionalized with MoS2 Nanosheets for Enhanced Repair of Critical-Size Bone Defect in Rats

Jie Zhang,Boyou Zhang,Zefeng Zheng,Qingyun Cai,Jingcheng Wang,Qiang Shu,Lijia Wang

Tissue-engineered bones have therapeutic potential for critical-size bone defects; however, the production of high quantities of the tissue-engineered bones with osteo-induction ability remains a huge challenge. Hyperthermia has been shown to up-regulate the expression of osteogenesis-related proteins to efficiently to promote bone regeneration. In this study, the authors develop a novel photothermal tissueengineered bone (PTEB) with osteo-induction ability and a biomimetic cellular environment. PTEB is generated by seeding rat bone mesenchymal stem cells (rBMMSCs) in the photothermal MoS 2 -biotin-garose-gelatin scaffold, and then overlaying the scaffold using osteo-induction extracellular matrix (OiECM). The rBMMSCs act as seeding cells, while OiECM provide a biomimetic microenvironment for repairing critical-sized cranial defects in rats. The results show that the PTEB exhibit high biocompatibility and osteo-induction ability under near-infrared (NIR) radiation. Results of in vitro experiments show that PTEB under NIR radiation promote proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rBMMSCs. Furthermore, the PTEB implantation under NIR radiation significantly induces regeneration of bone in critical-size bone defects in rats 12 weeks after implantation. These findings indicate that PTEB has great potential in regenerative medicine and may represent an effective replacement for autografts used commonly in bone tissue engineering.

NIR-Triggered Photothermal Responsive Coatings with Remote and Localized Tunable Underwater Oil Adhesion

Bin Shang,Min Chen,Limin Wu

Tunable underwater oil adhesion is a critical issue in interfacial science and industrial applications. Although much progress has been made to date, development of novel smart coating materials that can selectively change the wetting property at different areas is considerably scarce. Here, a simple strategy is proposed to fabricate photothermal responsive coatings, which can change the oil adhesion behavior from low-adhesive rolling state to high-adhesive pinning state for a variety of oily liquids in a remote, local, and reversible manner. Owing to this unique controllability, the adhesion and no-adhesion of oil droplets on the coated surfaces can be easily manipulated by remote and local near-infrared radiation.

Photo-induced shape memory blend composites with remote selective self-healing performance enabled by polypyrrole nanoparticles

Jie Chen,De-xiang Sun,Ting Gu,Xiao-dong Qi,Jing-hui Yang,Yan-zhou Lei,Yong Wang

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a type of smart materials that can recover to the original shape from a set temporary shape under external stimulus, but SMPs are prone to be damaged during repeated deformation and recovery. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the self-healing ability of SMPs. In this work, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/polypyrrole (PPy) blend composites were prepared via simple melt blending . In this system, PPy nanoparticles , as photothermal fillers, selectively distributed in the PCL component, enable the EVA/PCL blend with a co-continuous structure to exhibit excellent photo-induced shape memory performance with a shape recovery ratio of 100%. Thanks to the excellent photothermal effect of PPy nanoparticles and the melting and recrystallization behaviors of linear EVA and PCL chains, the blend composites also exhibit outstanding photo-induced self-healing performance for different forms of damage, and the considerable healing efficiencies for the bent, scratched and cut samples reach 85.68%, 94.63% and 86.49%, respectively. Compared with the traditional thermal-induced self-healing shape memory composites, near infrared (NIR) irradiation can not only remotely manipulate the shape memory behavior of these composites, but also can accurately and selectively heal the damaged areas without distinct impact on the performance of intact areas. The above dual functions, along with the comprehensive performances and simple preparation process of these materials, enable the EVA/PCL/PPy blend composites to be the ideal candidates for many potential applications, including soft robots , smart packaging, biomedical devices , etc.

Functionalized mesoporous carbon nanoparticles for targeted chemo-photothermal therapy of cancer cells under near-infrared irradiation

Guiju Xu,Shengju Liu,Huan Niu,Wenping Lv,Ren'an Wu

Chemo-photothermal therapy with the combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy has emerged as a promising anticancer treatment for its synergistic effects. In this work, the functionalized mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (FA/PEI/O-MCN) were constructed by modifying the mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (MCN) with polyethylenimine (PEI) and folic acid (FA) for the targeted chemo-photothermal therapy. The FA/PEI/O-MCN exhibited strong light absorption and high photothermal conversion efficiency in the near-infrared (NIR) region due to the graphitic structure of MCN. Meanwhile, FA/PEI/O-MCN displayed high drug loading capacity using doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) as a model drug. Flow cytometry analysis and competitive binding experiments verified that the FA modification could significantly enhance the uptake of FA/PEI/O-MCN by HeLa cells with folate receptors (FR) over-expressing. Comparing with chemotherapy or photothermal therapy alone, the DOX-loaded FA/PEI/O-MCN demonstrated the synergistic effects and resulted in the higher therapeutic efficacy. We believe that the FA/PEI/O-MCN could be applied as an efficient chemo-photothermal platform to realize the targeted synergistic therapy.

VIS-NIR radiation properties of starchy and protein foods and their impacts on radiant heating effects

Wei Yang,Linshuang Long,Yanjun Sun,Fan Yang,Luo Zhang,Kai Xu,Hong Ye

Infrared heating has been widely used in food processing; however, there are few studies on the VIS-NIR radiation properties of food. We measured the radiation properties of starchy foods (potato, Chinese yam and sweet potato) and protein foods (beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin and chicken breast) and dispersions of starches and proteins before and after heat treatment in the 0.38–2.5 μm band. The results show that the radiation penetration depths (RPDs) of all tested foods are relatively high in the 0.6–1.3 μm band, with maximum values in the range of 4–8 mm. After heat treatment, the RPDs of starchy foods slightly increase, while those of protein foods decrease to approximately 1/2 of the original values. Comparative heating experiments of potato, Chinese yam and sweet potato heated by a halogen lamp (1.04 μm) and a carbon fiber lamp (1.76 μm) with peak wavelengths in and out of the 0.6–1.3 μm band, respectively, show that the foods heated by the halogen lamp have faster heating rates and more uniform temperature distributions. Because starchy and protein foods have high RPDs in the 0.6–1.3 μm band, the VIS-NIR radiation containing this band is expected to achieve rapid heating.

Intestine-inspired wrinkled MXene microneedle dressings for smart wound management

Huihui Lu,Wenyu Shao,Bingbing Gao,Shiya Zheng,Bingfang He

Composite MXene-based materials are prone to crack propagation , thus limiting their tensile properties . Numerous efforts have been devoted to removing material constraints and fabricating unitary MXene elastic films. Here, for the first time, inspired by the intestinal wrinkles and villi structure, we presented a ductile, biologically friendly, and highly conductive MXene-based microneedle (MMN) dressing composed of stacked MXene film and superfine microneedle arrays through a simple stretching and laser engraving strategy for wound healing. By utilizing photothermal responsive MXene, periodic porous structures, and a temperature-responsive polymer to construct the MMN dressing, the system can act as an effective route for facilitating controllable drug delivery controlled by near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. In addition, superior conductivity imparts them with the capacity to realize continuous and steady monitoring of motion sensing. The practical performance further demonstrated that the versatile MMN dressing showed obvious therapeutic efficacy in vivo animal wound models. Thus, it is believed that MMN dressings with biomimetic structures, controllable drug release, and conductive pathways will open a new chapter for wound management and widen other practical applications in biomedical fields, such as artificial tendons and soft robotics. Statement of significance MXene-based materials have been demonstrated as critical tools in advancing our understanding of wound healing. However, the rapid crack propagation is a constraint on their tensile properties. Here, inspired by the intestinal wrinkles and villi structure, a single-step method has also been discussed to present a MXene-based microneedle dressing composed of unitary MXene elastic film and superfine microneedle arrays. At the same time, the dressing with biomimetic structures, controllable drug release, and conductive pathways has prospects in intelligent wound management and varieties of related biomedical fields.

Multimodal ultra-small CoFe-WOx nanohybrids synthesized by a pilot microfluidic system

Qiong Wu,Ran Liu,Fenglin Miao,Guangqing Zhang,Wengang Li,Yujun Song

Among all the nanomaterials, ultra-small nanohybrids have gained considerable attention as drugs, contrast agents, molecular nanoprobes, and catalysts owing to their multi-functionality and size effect. However, their extension and commercialization are restricted due to low synthetic efficiency and uncontrollable structure. Herein, a pilot microfluidic system (PMS) was built to successfully synthesize the ultra-small (2.3 ± 0.7 nm) CoFe-WO x nanohybrids (NHs) with a tiny CoFe core and a mixed metal oxides shell (CoWO 4 -Fe 2 WO 6 -WO 3 ). Furthermore, the CoFe-WO x NHs displayed excellent multi-modal imaging properties, which could be observed optically via a dark-field microscope, imaged through X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging device. For the first time, hybridization between metal cores and metal-oxide shells produced two strong absorption peaks in the long band of near infrared radiation, one at 1450 nm and the other at 1980 nm. Overall, CoFe-WO x NHs emonstrated distinct magnetic and optical properties and multimode imaging capabilities due to their microstructure and composition. These findings may prove to be effective in finding alternatives for nanoprobes that can be used for visible/infrared/MRI/CT imaging, as well as pre-drugs for photothermal/photodynamic and magnetothermal/magneto-dynamic therapies.

DOX-Fe3O4@mSiO2-PO-FA nanocomposite for synergistic chemo- and photothermal therapy

Xiangjie Luo,Ying Wang,Huiming Lin,Fengyu Qu

The integration of multiple therapies into one nanoplatform was considered to be the most efficient method to give an enhanced therapeutic effect for anti-cancer treatments. In this research, pH sensitive drug release and near-infrared (NIR)-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) were placed in one nanocomposite using iron(II,III) oxide@meso-silica (Fe3O4@mSiO2) NPs as the host. Then, a sensitive ketal modified silane coupling agent (PO linker) was prepared to encapsulate the anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), into the mSiO2 shell, ensuring the few leakage. Based on the different pH conditions of normal and cancer cells, the DOX-Fe3O4@mSiO2-PO nanocomposite exhibits the specific drug release in cancer cells (acid conditions) before that the few leakage makes sure there are a low number of side effects. Furthermore, the release kinetics can also be easily adjusted by varying the amount of PO linker. Under NIR (808 nm) irradiation, the photothermal effect derived from magnetic Fe3O4 NPs can also induce the apoptosis of the cancer cells which is how PTT is achieved. HeLa cells (cervical cancer cell line) were used as the typical cancer cell and the detailed cell experiments further display the enhanced specific cytotoxicity of the method to HeLa cells. The multifunctional nanocomposite has great potential as an application for anti-cancer therapy.
