Conventional supported Pt catalysts have often been prepared by loading Pt onto commercial supports, such as SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, and carbon. These catalysts usually have simple metal-support (i.e., Pt-SiO2) interfaces. To tune the catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts, it is desirable to modify the metal-support interfaces by incorporating an oxide additive into the catalyst formula. Here we prepared three series of metal oxide-modified Pt catalysts (i.e., Pt/MOx/SiO2, Pt/MOx/TiO2, and Pt/MOx/Al2O3, where M = Al, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Ba, La) for CO oxidation. Among them, Pt/CoOx/SiO2, Pt/CoOx/TiO2, and Pt/CoOx/Al2O3showed the highest catalytic activities. Relevant samples were characterized by N2adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO temperature-programmed desorption (CO-TPD), O2temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD), and CO2temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD).Keywords:Pt catalysts;cobalt oxide;CO oxidation

LaPO 4 has been used as a support to make supported catalysts in some investigations, but the effect of different LaPO 4 supports on the catalytic performance of supported catalysts has been rarely reported. In this work, conventional hexagonal LaPO 4 (LaPO 4 H) was prepared by precipitation, and hexagonal LaPO 4 nanowires (LaPO 4 HNW) was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis at 150 °C. Monoclinic LaPO 4 nanowires (LaPO 4 -MNW-220 and LaPO 4 -MNW-900) were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis at 220 °C or calcining LaPO 4 HNW at 900 °C. These samples were used to support Rh 2 O 3 via impregnation using Rh(NO 3 ) 3 as a precursor. The activities of these supported catalysts in N 2 O decomposition and CO oxidation follow the same sequence of Rh 2 O 3 / LaPO 4 HNW > Rh 2 O 3 / LaPO 4 H > Rh 2 O 3 / LaPO 4 -MNW-220 > Rh 2 O 3 / LaPO 4 -MNW-900, i.e. , two hexagonal LaPO 4 supports are better than two monoclinic LaPO 4 supports in making active catalysts, and hexagonal LaPO 4 nanowires are better than hexagonal LaPO 4 composed of nanoparticles and short nanorods. The most active catalyst has highly dispersed Rh 2 O 3 species interacting strongly with the support, more oxygen-adsorption capacity, and more basic sites.

CO is a ubiquitous air pollutant, frequently encountered in the fields of automotive exhaust purification, especial in the cold-start-emission stage. Pt based catalysts are widely used to purify CO into CO 2 owing to their exceptional performance. But they can be few excited to exhibit reasonable catalytic activity due to the low temperature at the cold-start-emission stage. In exhaust gas purification catalysts used by fossil fuel-based vehicles, Al 2 O 3 is used frequently. But there are rarely reports of Pt loaded Al 2 O 3 catalysts achieving feasible activity of CO oxidation at room temperature. Herein, we prepared Cu x Pt y alloy/Al 2 O 3 catalysts (with high penta-coordinated Al 3+ (Al V )), Al V centers as binding sites for Cu 3 Pt 1 alloys on Al 2 O 3 enable the high dispersion and stability of Cu 3 Pt 1 alloy. The adsorption capacity of O 2 and CO molecules on Cu 3 Pt 1 surface are stronger than the case on Pt surface, which may make O 2 and CO molecules more easily activated, making the CO oxidation reaction easier. In addition, the desorption of CO 2 from Cu x Pt y surface is easier compared to that on Pt surface, increasing the frequency of use of active sites there. Therefore, this Cu 3 Pt 1 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibits 100 % conversion of CO with a GHSV of 6×10 3 mL·g −1 cat ·h −1 at room temperature. This work provides a feasible guideline for the design and synthesis of Pt loaded Al 2 O 3 catalysts toward room temperature CO oxidation.

SnO2 and SnO2/CeO2 one dimensional (1D) nanostructures with various morphologies including solid nanofibers (NFs), nanobelts (NBs), nanotubes (NTs), and wire-in-tubes (WTs) were successfully prepared via a single-spinneret electrospinning process and a subsequent heat-treatment by adjusting the heating rate and the amount of CeO2. The interesting morphology evolution of samples from NTs to NBs was reported with increasing amounts of CeO2. In addition, SnO2 particles existed on the surface of the CeO2 matrix to form diverse structures in the 1D nanofibers. The band gap of the composite oxides decreased with the addition of CeO2. Compared with other nanostructures, SnO2/CeO2 NTs exhibited superior gas sensing properties, such as the highest response to ethanol. Due to the existence of Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies and the hollow structure, SnO2/CeO2 NTs revealed great CO oxidation performance, indicating the enhanced interactions between the catalyst and the target gas. These excellent properties were attributed to the prominent 1D hollow morphology, the good dispersion of SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the CeO2 matrix, the ideal crystallinity, and the composite interactions between the two oxides. In addition, the current method could be utilizable to fabricate other metal oxides with various morphologies for property controlling and important applications.

Nano-Au has a good catalytic activity for CO oxidation, but its catalytic mechanism is still not clear. Here, CO oxidation on Au 2 O 3 and its thermal decomposition products were studied using thermogravimetric-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) and operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy-mass spectrometry (DRIFTS-MS) to explore the key active components of Au catalyst for CO oxidation. The TG-MS results showed that Au 2 O 3 decomposed to AuO at 210 °C and Au at 375 °C and was oxidized to form Au oxide above 375 °C. When Au 2 O 3 decomposed into Au x O y (x>y) above 210 °C, the CO oxidation activity obviously increased. Au atoms in the Au-Au system serve as electron donor and CO adsorption sites. Au atom is oxidized to AuO by the O atom from O 2 decomposition following the Epling-Xu decomposition mechanism. A schematic diagram of the key components of Au 2 O 3 catalysts during CO oxidation was proposed based on TG-MS and operando DRIFTS-MS analysis results.

Surface property modification of catalyst support is a straightforward approach to optimize the performance of supported noble metal catalysts. In particular, oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups play significant roles in promoting noble metal dispersion on catalysts as well as catalytic stability. In this study, we developed a nanoflower-like TiO 2 -supported Pd catalyst that has a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups compared to that of commercial anatase and P25 support. Notably, due to the distinctive structure of the nanoflower-like TiO 2 , our catalyst exhibited improved dispersion and stabilization of Pd species and the formation of abundant reactive oxygen species, thereby facilitating the activation of CO and O 2 molecules. As a result, the catalyst showed remarkable efficiency in catalyzing the low-temperature CO oxidation reaction with a complete CO conversion at 80 °C and stability for over 100 h.

Cu-doped manganese oxide (Cu–Mn2O4) prepared using aerosol decomposition was used as a CO oxidation catalyst. Cu was successfully doped into Mn2O4due to their nitrate precursors having closed thermal decomposition properties, which ensured the atomic ratio of Cu/(Cu + Mn) in Cu–Mn2O4close to that in their nitrate precursors. The 0.5Cu–Mn2O4catalyst of 0.48 Cu/(Cu + Mn) atomic ratio had the best CO oxidation performance, withT50andT90as low as 48 and 69 °C, respectively. The 0.5Cu–Mn2O4catalyst also had (1) a hollow sphere morphology, where the sphere wall was composed of a large number of nanospheres (about 10 nm), (2) the largest specific surface area and defects on the interfacing of the nanospheres, and (3) the highest Mn3+, Cu+, and Oads ratios, which facilitated oxygen vacancy formation, CO adsorption, and CO oxidation, respectively, yielding a synergetic effect on CO oxidation. DRIFTS-MS analysis results showed that terminal-type oxygen (M=O) and bridge-type oxygen (M-O-M) on 0.5Cu–Mn2O4were reactive at a low temperature, resulting in-good low-temperature CO oxidation performance. Water could adsorb on 0.5Cu–Mn2O4and inhibited M=O and M-O-M reaction with CO. Water could not inhibit O2decomposition to M=O and M-O-M. The 0.5Cu–Mn2O4catalyst had excellent water resistance at 150 °C, at which the influence of water (up to 5%) on CO oxidation could be completely eliminated.Keywords:doping;Cu–Mn2O4;CO oxidation;oxygen vacancy;water resistance;DRIFTS-MS

Because the combination of Co and common support (Al, Ti, et al.) usually shows poor catalytic activity, tantalum has been introduced for CO conversion as a novel carrier due to the excellent performance. In this work, Co 3 O 4 was loaded on four forms of tantalum support (amorphous, mesoporous, crystalline and crystalline mesoporous, abbreviated as Co/Ta-am, Co/Ta-me, Co/Ta-cry and Co/Ta-cm, respectively). And among these four states, Co/Ta-cm presents the highest CO conversion rate. The temperature of 90% CO conversion rate of Co/Ta-cm is approximately 130 ℃ at the high space velocity of 780,000 h −1 , which is 70%, 82% and 88% higher than that of Co/Ta-cry, Co/Ta-me and Co/Ta-am, respectively. Moreover, the characteristics of the catalyst have been studied by XRD, SEM, BET, TGA, and H 2 -TPR, and the results reveal that Co/Ta-cm has the excellent crystallinity and stability, and the morphology is regular. X-ray photon spectroscopy and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) have been performed to investigate the reaction mechanism, which indicates that Co 3+ is the active component and lattice oxygen plays a critical role in CO oxidation.

Abstract CO is toxic and detrimental to human beings and the atmosphere. The presence of CO has become one of the important indicators for evaluating ambient air quality. Iron and steel sintering generate large amounts of flue gas emissions containing approximately 1% CO, which has become an important factor restricting the improvement of air quality in steel cities. The catalytic oxidation method is the simplest and most effective method for CO emission control. In this work, a series of Cu x Ce y /TiO 2 catalysts with different Ce doping levels were prepared by a one-step impregnation method and subsequently tested for catalytic CO oxidation. The Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 sample has the best catalytic activity under the conditions of 1% CO and 10% H 2 O. The catalysts were next characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, H 2 -TPR, XPS and in-situ DRIFTS methods. The characterization results show that Ce doping promotes the dispersion of copper species on the catalyst surface and improve the redox performance of the catalyst. The results of in-situ experiments showed that both Cu/TiO 2 and Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 catalysts followed Mars and van Krevelen mechanism, and Ce doping enhanced the adsorption and activation of oxygen, thus improving the low-temperature reaction activity of the catalysts. The removal of carbon monoxide (CO) from sintering flue gases remains a significant challenge in industrial gas purification, requiring efficient catalytic systems. This study explores the use of TiO 2 synthesized under supercritical conditions in copper-based catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation. Experimental results showed enhanced catalytic activity, with complete CO conversion at 120°C, primarily due to a higher Cu⁺ concentration in the catalyst. Characterization techniques (XPS, EPR, CO-DRIFT) confirmed a substantial increase in the Cu⁺ ratio in Cu/sc-TiO 2 (78%) compared to Cu/TiO 2 (71%) before thermal treatment. Additionally, the Cu/sc-TiO 2 -A catalyst exhibited smaller particle size and better dispersion, which contributed to the elevated Cu⁺ ratio after preheating. Thermal treatment increased the Cu⁺ ratio by 11% in Cu/sc-TiO 2 -A, compared to just 3% in Cu/TiO 2 -A, leading to a final Cu⁺ ratio of 89%, which enhanced catalytic activity. DRIFT and TPSR analyses indicated that the Cu/sc-TiO 2 catalyst generated CO during heat treatment, creating a micro-reduction environment that optimized copper valence states and active sites. This study highlights the potential of continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis for modulating catalyst valence states in industrial applications.

Catalyst deactivation caused by SO 2 poisoning generally hinders commercial viability of CO oxidation catalysts in the field of industrial flue gas purification. XPS results, CO-DRIFTS spectra and DFT calculations suggested that Pt was highly-dispersed and remained the oxidative states on SnO 2 support, resulting in that the rate-determining step of CO oxidation is to clean up the adsorbed CO and PtS 2 species is readily formed in a SO 2 -contained hydrothermal environment. It predominantly maintained metallic Pt 0 in the Pt/WO 3 catalyst, thereby led to cleaning up the activated oxygen atoms as the rate-determining step. It is very difficult to remove the sulfur species in SO 2 -poisoned catalysts within 600 °C and the mechanisms of CO oxidation are not affected by SO 2 poisoning for Pt/SnO 2 and Pt/WO 3 catalysts. These findings provide some significant insights to understand the mechanisms of CO oxidation and SO 2 -tolerance.

CO oxidation is one of the most important catalytic reactions and it has to be run at relatively high temperature. Photothermal catalysis system could convert light as heat to drive CO oxidation rather than their conventional counterparts that use only thermal stimulus. But the light intensity required in this photothermal catalysis system is much higher than the solar intensity, restricting the application of photothermal CO oxidation. Here we present a Fe 3 Si based photothermal converted system to assist Co 3 O 4 rhombus-shaped nanorods catalysts for achieving efficient photothermal CO oxidation just under weak solar irradiation . Based on photothermal experiments, we conclude that Fe 3 Si based photo-thermal converted system can convert 0.3–0.35 kW m −2 solar irradiation into a temperature as high as 160 °C, 3 times higher than existing photothermal catalytic systems , which able to excite the activity of Co 3 O 4 rhombus-shaped nanorods for complete CO oxidation, solely irradiated by third of standard solar light and outdoor sunlight. The results suggested that the photothermal CO oxidation can be driven by ambient solar irradiation in the presence of Fe 3 Si based photothermal system and Co 3 O 4 rhombus-shaped nanorods, facilitating for industrial applications.
