A Novel Method of Recovery Vanadium from Vanadium Slag through CaO2-Briquetting Roasting Process

Hongrui Yue,Gongjin Cheng,Jianxing Liu,Xiangxin Xue,Weijun Zhang

This study proposes a clean and effective routine and aims to solve the problems of material accumulation and hypoxia during roasting vanadium slag. The vanadium slag and CaO 2 powders are mixed, briquetted, and roasted at different parameters. The generated phases are Fe 2 O 3 , Fe–Mg oxides, Fe–Ti oxides, Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 , silicate, and SiO 2 after roasting. The solid reaction between V 2 O 5 and CaO is described using the vacancy diffusion mechanism. Ca 2+ (or V 5+ ) jumps and diffuses through the Ca 2+ (or V 5+ ) vacancies in the Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 layer and subsequently to the Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 /V 2 O 5 (or Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 /CaO) interface and reacts with V 2 O 5 (or CaO) and O 2 (decomposed from CaO 2 or transported from the air) to generate Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 . The vanadium leaching rate is very sensitive to the roasting parameters of CaO/V 2 O 5 molar ratio, temperature, time, and briquetting pressure. A maximum vanadium leaching rate of 98.31% is achieved with a CaO/V 2 O 5 molar ratio of 3/1, with temperature, time, and briquetting pressure being maintained at 900 °C, 50 min, and 10 MPa, respectively. The present routine, which greatly shortens the roasting time, can be realized through a rotary hearth furnace, and is likely to be accepted by both iron works and the environment due to its effective and clean characteristics.

Simultaneous oxidation and removal of arsenite by Fe(III)/CaO2 Fenton-like technology

Meiqing Chen,Zhihao Chen,Pingxiao Wu,J. Paul Chen

Arsenite contaminated water is one of severe global environmental problems. It is challenging to treat As(III) pollution by a one-step technology. In this study, we developed a Fe(III)/CaO 2 Fenton-like technology for the treatment of As(III). The simultaneous oxidation of arsenite and removal of arsenic were achieved with efficiencies of nearly 100% and 95.8% respectively, which outperforms conventional technologies. It worked well in pH 3 to 9, and in the presence of cationic heavy metals, anions and humic acid. Moreover, the PO 4 3 − PO43− inhibited the removal of As(III). • OH and 1 O 2 played the important roles in the oxidation of As(III). The Ca(II) derived from CaO 2 made a significant contribution to the oxidation and removal of As(III). The SEM and XPS studies confirmed that the formation of Ca-Fe nascent colloid caused the effective removal of arsenic. Our study demonstrates that the one-step Fe(III)/CaO 2 technology has a great potential for purification of the As(III)-contaminated water.

CaO2 activation by electrochemically generated Fe2+ for improving sludge dewatering at neutral pH: Influence of oxalic acid addition

Chuhan Gu,Lei Song,Maofeng Shi,Yihong Wu,Jiaxian Zhang,Jingyu Lv

In this study, we investigated the efficiency of activation of CaO 2 by oxalic acid (OA) chelated with electrochemically (EF)-released Fe 2+ (EF-CaO 2 /OA) in improving the performance of sludge dewatering under neutral conditions. We also explored the mechanism of OA-reinforcement of EF-CaO 2 in enhancing the performance of wastewater-activated sludge dewatering by investigating the water content (Wc), specific resistance to filtration (SRF), pH, bound water content, extracellular polymers in the sludge, the secondary structure of proteins, the soluble ferric ions, and the morphology of the sludge. The EF-CaO 2 /OA process was better than the EF-CaO 2 process in terms of sludge dewatering. OA introduction significantly inhibited the increase of solution pH, which in turn promoted CaO 2 dissolution and persistent H 2 O 2 generation. The persistent oxidative reaction contributed to the degradation of hydrophilic protein fractions in EPS and the reduction of the proportion of hydrophilic structures in the secondary structure of proteins, which in turn improved the hydrophobicity of the sludge. The changing profile of DNA content in EPS proved that EF-CaO 2 /OA led to the damage of more sludge cells. It suggested that OA enhanced the oxidizing efficacy of EF-CaO 2 , which in turn promoted the release of bound water from more sludge cells. Moreover, OA significantly increased the amount of dissolved iron in solution by chelating the electrochemically released iron, which contributed to the stabilization of the oxidation reaction. Under the optimal conditions, sludge Wc and SRF treated by EF-CaO 2 /OA were reduced by 30.1% and 96.9%, respectively, and the dewatered sludge cake remained neutral. In conclusion, EF-CaO 2 /OA may be an efficient and feasible technique for deep sludge dewatering.

A self-circulating electro-fenton-like process over Fe3O4–CaO2 cathode for highly efficient degradation of levofloxacin

Yangyang Bai,Xiaoqin Sun,Yuan Dang,Sha Yu,Jun-Jie Zhu,Yuanzhen Zhou

Electro-Fenton reaction was limited by the generation of H 2 O 2 and the circulation of Fe(Ⅱ)/Fe(Ⅲ). Herein, an efficient electro-Fenton-like process was constructed based on Fe 3 O 4 –CaO 2 cathode promoted by peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Levofloxacin (LEV) could be efficiently degraded (92.1%) and mineralized with the TOC removal of 74.5% in this self-circulating process. More importantly, the Fe 3 O 4 –CaO 2 exhibited good stability in the recycles due that CaO 2 was covered by Fe 3 O 4 , which inhibited the rapid release of H 2 O 2 . Mechanism analysis indicated that CaO 2 could not only replace H 2 O 2 to accelerate the oxidation of Fe(Ⅱ) to Fe(Ⅲ), but also could form complexes with Fe(Ⅲ) and PMS to transfer electrons from ligands to metals, thereby enhancing the reduction of Fe(Ⅲ) to Fe(Ⅱ). As a result, the electrical consumption was significantly reduced, which was only 5.0% of the Fe 3 O 4 in electro-Fenton reaction. Meanwhile, the hydrolyzed product of Ca(OH) 2 reacted with Fe(Ⅲ) in the presence of H 2 O 2 and converted into CaO 2 . Thus, the self-circulation of CaO 2 /Ca(OH) 2 and Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) was realized, which accelerated the generation of active species, such as, ·OH, O 2 · - and 1 O 2 . This work first proposed a self-circulating electro-Fenton-like system and demonstrated the potential application of Fe 3 O 4 –CaO 2 in the treatment of wastewater.

Platelet Membrane-Camouflaged Copper Doped CaO2 Biomimetic Nanomedicines for Breast Cancer Combination Treatment

Luping Ren,Junhao Zhang,Lei Nie,Armin Shavandi,Khaydar E. Yunusov,Uladzislau E. Aharodnikau,Sergey O. Solomevich,Yanfang Sun,Guohua Jiang

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and ion interference therapy (IIT), used in combination, represent a common treatment. In this study, platelet membrane-camouflaged copper-doped CaO2 biomimetic nanomedicines have been developed for breast cancer treatments. Copper-doped CaO2 nanoparticles were first coated by polydopamine (PDA) and subsequently camouflaged by platelet membrane (PM) to form platelet membrane-camouflaged copper doped CaO2 biomimetic nanomedicines (Cu-CaO2@PDA/PM). The as-fabricated Cu-CaO2@PDA/PM multifunctional nanomedicines could decompose within the tumor microenvironment to release Ca2+ for ion interference therapy, and the generated H2O2 could perform a Fenton-like reaction with the assistance of loaded copper ions to produce ·OH, thus realizing chemodynamic therapy. In addition, the copper ions could also consume glutathione and weaken its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species, which was conducive to amplifying the effect of oxidative stress. The coating of the polydopamine layer could achieve local hyperthermia of the tumor site, and the surface modification of the platelet membrane could enhance the targeting and biocompatibility of nanomedicines. In vivo and in vitro tests demonstrated that the developed Cu-CaO2@PDA/PM biomimetic nanomedicines offer a promising biomimetic nanoplatform for efficient multimodal combination therapy for breast cancer.

Effects of CaO2 based Fenton - like reaction on heavy metals and microbial community during co-composting of straw and sediment

Yaoning Chen,Xinli Luo,Yuanping Li,Yihuan Liu,Li Chen,Hongjuan Jiang,Yanrong Chen,Xiaoli Qin,Ping Tang,Haoqin Yan

In this study, a Fenton-like system was constructed by CaO 2 and nano-Fe 3 O 4 in the co-composting system of straw and sediment. Its effect on the passivation of heavy metals and the evolution of microbial community were investigated. The results showed that the establishment of CaO 2 -Fenton-like system increased the residual Cu and residual Zn by 27.62% and 16.80%, respectively. In addition, the CaO 2 -Fenton-like system facilitated the formation of humic acid (HA) up to 20.84 g·kg −1 . Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the CaO 2 -Fenton-like system accelerated bacterial community succession and promoted the passivation of Cu and Zn. Structural equation models (SEMs) indicated that Fenton reaction affected Cu and Zn passivation by affecting pH, bacterial communities, and HA. This study shows that the CaO 2 -Fenton-like system could promote the application of composting in the remediation of heavy metals contamination in sediment.

Development of nano-CaO2-coated clinoptilolite for enhanced phosphorus adsorption and simultaneous removal of COD and nitrogen from sewage

Kun Zhou,Boran Wu,Lianghu Su,Xiaofeng Gao,Xiaoli Chai,Xiaohu Dai

Severe water pollution caused by excessive emissions of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) into water bodies is a significant concern worldwide. In the present study, we synthesized a novel nano composite, nano-CaO 2 @clinoptilolite, for the simultaneous removal of P, COD, and N from sewage. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the crystalline composition of the nano composite and confirm the presence of CaO 2 . The spatial distribution of nano CaO 2 particles and the microtopography of nano-CaO 2 @clinoptilolite were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. P uptake analysis indicated that nano-CaO 2 @clinoptilolite was highly effective for P removal over a wide pH range of 7.0–11.0, and that phosphate precipitation induced by the solubilization of Ca 2+ from CaO 2 was determined to be the main mechanism of P removal. In addition, simultaneous P, COD, and N removal efficiencies of 50.4, 74.7, and 80.7%, respectively, were obtained when nano-CaO 2 @clinoptilolite was applied to sewage samples. The realization of synergistic peroxidation, adsorption, and precipitation by nano-CaO 2 @clinoptilolite provides a novel insight into the high-efficiency purification of sewage.

Downregulation of the Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure to Boost Intratumoral Penetration and Hydrodynamic Therapy via CaO2-Based Ru Nanozymes

Zhuo Li,Yaqian He,Chunhui Li,Yuchu He,Xuwu Zhang,Song Ni,Desong Wang,Dawei Gao

The high interstitial fluid pressure at the tumor tissue is a key factor that hinders the deep penetration of nanomedicines into the tumor and affects the therapeutic effect. Herein, we designed a CaO2-based Ru nanozyme to efficiently consume the tumor interstitial fluid and enhance deep tumor penetration as well as treatment. CaO2/Ru-PDA-HA (CRPH) reached tumors via hyaluronic acid (HA)-mediated tumor targeting. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, CRPH pyrolyzed and released CaO2 and Ru, and then CaO2 would consume H2O to produce O2 and H2O2 for reducing the tumor interstitial fluid volume to promote the tumor penetration of medicines. Meanwhile, Ru nanoparticles with good peroxidase activity can decompose H2O2 to generate cytotoxic •OH. Therefore, photothermal and ROS synergistic therapy damaged deep tumor stem cells. The results showed that the relative tumor interstitial pressure was reduced to 56.34%, and the tumor inhibition rate was 99.67%. The design provides a synergetic hydrodynamic therapy strategy for enhancing the deep penetration of nanomedicines and boosting the antitumor effect.

Effectiveness of chelating agent–assisted Fenton-like processes on remediation of glucocorticoid-contaminated soil using chemical and biological assessment: performance comparison of CaO2 and H2O2

Liu Yanan,Zhou Quan,Li Zhenyu,Zhang Ai,Zhan Jiaxun,Miruka Andere Clement,Gao Xiaoting,Wang Jie

Glucocorticoids (GCs) have drawn great concern due to widespread contamination in the environment and application in treating COVID-19. Most studies on GC removal mainly focused on aquatic environment, while GC behaviors in soil were less mentioned. In this study, degradation of three selected GCs in soil has been investigated using citric acid (CA)–modified Fenton-like processes (H 2 O 2 /Fe(III)/CA and CaO 2 /Fe(III)/CA treatments). The results showed that GCs in soil can be removed by modified Fenton-like processes (removal efficiency gt; 70% for 24 h). CaO 2 /Fe(III)/CA was more efficient than H 2 O 2 /Fe(III)/CA at low oxidant dosage (< 0.28–0.69 mmol/g) for long treatment time (> 4 h). Besides the chemical assessment with GC removal, effects of Fenton-like processes were also evaluated by biological assessments with bacteria and plants. CaO 2 /Fe(III)/CA was less harmful to the richness and diversity of microorganisms in soil compared to H 2 O 2 /Fe(III)/CA. Weaker phytotoxic effects were observed on GC-contaminated soil treated by CaO 2 /Fe(III)/CA than H 2 O 2 /Fe(III)/CA. This study, therefore, recommends CaO 2 -based treatments to remediate GC-contaminated soils. Graphical abstract

The Degradation of Aqueous Oxytetracycline by an O3/CaO2 System in the Presence of HCO3−: Performance, Mechanism, Degradation Pathways, and Toxicity Evaluation

Zedian Li,Liangrui Xiang,Shijia Pan,Dahai Zhu,Shen Li,He Guo

This research constructed a novel O3/CaO2/HCO3−system to degrade antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) in water. The results indicated that CaO2andHCO3−addition could promote OTC degradation in an O3system. There is an optimal dosage of CaO2(0.05 g/L) andHCO3−(2.25 mmol/L) that promotes OTC degradation. After 30 min of treatment, approximately 91.5% of the OTC molecules were eliminated in the O3/CaO2/HCO3−system. A higher O3concentration, alkaline condition, and lower OTC concentration were conducive to OTC decomposition. Active substances including ·OH,1O2,·O2−, and ·HCO3−play certain roles in OTC degradation. The production of ·OH followed the order: O3/CaO2/HCO3−> O3/CaO2> O3. Compared to the sole O3system, TOC and COD were easier to remove in the O3/CaO2/HCO3−system. Based on DFT and LC-MS, active species dominant in the degradation pathways of OTC were proposed. Then, an evaluation of the toxic changes in intermediates during OTC degradation was carried out. The feasibility of O3/CaO2/HCO3−for the treatment of other substances, such as bisphenol A, tetracycline, and actual wastewater, was investigated. Finally, the energy efficiency of the O3/CaO2/HCO3−system was calculated and compared with other mainstream processes of OTC degradation. The O3/CaO2/HCO3−system may be considered as an efficient and economical approach for antibiotic destruction.

Self-production of oxygen system CaO2/MnO2@PDA-MB for the photodynamic therapy research and switch-control tumor cell imaging

Chenhui Ji,Zhongzhong Lu,Yonghui Xu,Beibei Shen,Shiyong Yu,Dan Shi

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) holds promise in biochemical study and tumor treatment. A novel multifunctional nanosystem CaO 2 /MnO 2 @polydopamine (PDA)-methylene blue (MB) nanosheet (CMP-MB) was designed. CaO 2 nanoparticles were encapsulated by MnO 2 nanosheet, and then PDA was coated on the surface of CaO 2 /MnO 2 nanosheets, which could adsorb photosensitizer MB through hydrophobic interaction or π-π stacking. In this nanosystem, CaO 2 /MnO 2 had the ability of self-production of oxygen, which solved the problem of tumor hypoxia largely. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the fluorescence of MB was suppressed by MnO 2 , while its emission was triggered in the simulated tumor microenvironment. Therefore, CMP-MB nanosheet could be used to switch-control cell imaging potentially. 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide testing and Live/Dead assay confirmed CMP-MB nanosheet had fewer side effects without illumination while it destroyed Hela cell with the illumination of light. Vitro cell experiment demonstrated CMP-MB nanosheet could achieve tumor microenvironment responsive imaging and inhibit tumor cell growth under illumination effectively. Therefore, the system has great potential for PDT application and switch-control tumor cell imaging. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part B: Appl Biomater, 106B: 2544–2552, 2018.

Metal–organic framework combined with CaO2 nanoparticles for enhanced and targeted photodynamic therapy

Xinran Sun,Kaixiu Chen,Yingyan Liu,Guoda Zhang,Min Shi,Pengfei Shi,Shusheng Zhang

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been rapidly developed as an effective therapeutic approach in clinical settings. However, hypoxia seriously limits the effectiveness of PDT. Here, we report a porphyrin-based metal–organic framework combined with hyaluronate-modified CaO2 nanoparticles (PCN-224-CaO2-HA) to target and enhance PDT efficacy. CaO2 reacts with H2O or weak acid to produce O2, overcoming the hypoxia problem. Hyaluronate protects CaO2 and specifically targets the CD44 receptor, which is highly expressed on tumor cell membranes, performing targeted therapy. After PDT treatment in vitro, the survival rates of 4T1 and MCF-7 tumor cells were 14.58% and 22.45%, respectively. The fluorescence imaging showed that PCN-224-CaO2-HA effectively aggregated in the tumor after 12 h of its intravenous injection into tumor-bearing mice. PCN-224-CaO2-HA exhibited efficacious tumor growth inhibition via enhanced PDT. Overall, this nanosystem providing in situ oxygen production was successfully used for targeted PDT with a significantly enhanced therapeutic efficacy in vitro and in vivo.
