Mild-temperature hydrogenation of carbonyls over Co-ZIF-9 derived Co-ZIF-x nanoparticle catalyst

Fanfan Yue,Ao Hu,Xinhuan Lu,Chenlong Wang,Haijun Pan,Haifu Zhang,Lu Yang,Qinghua Xia,Dan Zhou,Yongde Xia

Benzimidazole and metal cobalt salts were employed in the synthesis of Co-ZIF-9 by solvothermal crystallization. Highly active catalysts for selective hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds were developed. The optimal nanocatalyst Co-ZIF-350 manifested remarkable activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of cyclohexanone under mild conditions. Catalytic conversion of cyclohexanone reached the highest over the catalyst of Co-ZIF-9-pyrolyzed at 350 °C for 2 h, in which the conversion of cyclohexanone was 100 % and the selectivity of cyclohexanol was >99 % at 50 °C. A wide scope of ketones/aromatic aldehydes could be selectively reduced to the corresponding alcohols with high yields. Importantly, the nanocatalyst Co-ZIF-350 presented good tolerance of substrates with various functional groups under mild conditions.

Co-ZIF derived Co2P4O12-C nanosheets as a highly efficient sensor for glucose

Yang Lu,Zhang Yu,He Zhiyuan,Tang Xin,Dong Qiaoyan,Tang Jiayuan,Huang Ke,Zou Zhirong,Yu Huimin,Xiong Xiaoli

Cobalt-based catalysts are widely used as non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors due to their high natural abundance, low-cost, tunable valence states, and high electron transfer efficiency. In this work, carbon matrix-embedded cobalt metaphosphate nanosheets (Co 2 P 4 O 12 -C/CC) was successfully prepared by a phosphorylation process of cobalt zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (Co-ZIF) grown on carbon cloth (CC). Benefiting from the many gaps between the carbon matrix-embedded nanosheet arrays, the specific surface area and active sites of the catalyst electrode and its stability are significantly increased. As a working electrode, a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for glucose was constructed. The sensor exhibits good sensitivity ( 2092 µA mM −1  cm −2 ) with linear range of 1.0 µM to 2.0 mM and detection limit of 0.12 µM (S/N = 3). Further analysis of human serum obtained satisfactory results. This work opens a new door for the construction and application of cobalt-based non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors.

Flexible Co-ZIF-L@melamine sponge with underwater superoleophobicity for water/oil separation

Mengjue Cao,Yi Feng,Qian Chen,Pengcheng Zhang,Shihang Guo,Jianfeng Yao

In this study, melamine sponge (MS) is modified by in-situ growth of leaf-like Co-ZIF-L without the addition of additives or surfactants . Such modified MS shows good underwater superoleophobicity because of the unique pore structure and highly rough surface of MS@Co-ZIF-L. Compared to the pristine MS, the water-wetted MS@Co-ZIF-L exhibits excellent water-oil separation for various oils (the separation efficiencies are higher than 99.2%) with good long-term stability (no decrease in flux and separation efficiency after 60 cycles of separation). Moreover, MS@Co-ZIF-L is highly effective to treat oil-water emulsions. Besides the excellent separation performance, due to the outstanding mechanical properties, MS@Co-ZIF-L can be shaped into various configurations such as membranes, filters, adsorbing foams or other forms for the oil/water separation in various situations.

In situ transformable Co-ZIF as a high-efficiency catalyst for amplifying ammonium perchlorate decomposition

Zhengyi Zhao,Yanzhi Yang,Xin Yu,Minghong Long,Zhiyong Yan,Zhonghe Xu,Xuechun Xiao

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) address the longstanding challenge in ammonium perchlorate (AP) catalysis by simultaneously enhancing catalytic performance and heat release, owing to their high specific surface area, abundant nitrogen-rich ligands, and unique metal dispersion architecture. In this study, various metal-incorporated ZIFs were synthesized via a classical method, among which Co-ZIF exhibited optimal catalytic activity. Performance evaluations demonstrated that Co-ZIF significantly reduced the high-temperature decomposition peak by 171.4 °C (from 471.4 °C for pure AP to 300.0 °C). The activation energy ( E a ) decreased from 301.8 kJ·mol −1 to 169.9 kJ·mol −1 . Notably, the nitrogen-rich ligands within ZIFs contributed substantial heat release during AP decomposition (increasing from 888.3 J·g −1 to 2066.8 J·g −1 ). Through TG/DTG, XRD, FT-IR, and Raman analyses of the Co-ZIF + AP composite system at 280, 290, and 300 °C, we elucidated the in-situ pyrolysis process of Co-ZIF during AP thermal decomposition. The investigation confirmed the progressive decomposition of Co-ZIF and the in-situ formation of Co 3 O 4 /N-doped carbon composites, which actively participated in catalyzing AP decomposition. Based on these findings, a stage-specific catalytic mechanism was proposed, providing new insights for the application of MOF materials in AP decomposition research.

Cobalt metal replaces Co-ZIF-8 mesoporous material for effective adsorption of arsenic from wastewater

Wang Junfeng,Wang Heng,Qi Xianjin,Zhi Gang,Wang Jianhua

The high cost and low adsorption capacity of primary metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) limit their application in heavy metal removal. In this paper, Co/Zn bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized with excellent adsorption performance for As 5+ . The adsorption reached equilibrium after 180 min and the maximum adsorption was 250.088 mg/g. In addition, Co-ZIF-8 showed strong selective adsorption of As 5+ . The adsorption process model of Co-ZIF-8 fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 =0.997) and Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 =0.994), and it is demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent is a single layer of chemical adsorption. In addition, when the adsorbent enters the arsenic-containing solution, the surface of Co-ZIF-8 is hydrolyzed to produce a large number of Co-OH active sites, and As 5+ arrives at the surface of Co-ZIF-8 by electrostatic adsorption and combines with the active sites to generate the arsenic-containing complex As-O-Co. After four cycles, Co-ZIF-8 showed 80% adsorption of As 5+ . This study not only provides a new method to capture As 5+ in water by preparing MOF with partial replacement of the central metal, but also has great significance for the harmless disposal of polluted water.

Curcumin-Encapsulated Co-ZIF-8 for Ulcerative Colitis Therapy: ROS Scavenging and Macrophage Modulation Effects

Qi Tao,Hang Yao,Feifei Wang,Zehao Gu,Xiaofei Yang,Yuchi Zhao,Huan Pang,Dong-An Wang,Hui Chong

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by the disruption of the intestinal epithelial barrier. This study described the synthesis and characterization of CCM-Co-ZIF-8, a novel composite material with enzyme-like activities similar to catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase. CCM-Co-ZIF-8 demonstrated the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species that play a critical role in UC pathogenesis. In vitro studies using lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 cells showed that CCM-Co-ZIF-8 exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by promoting the transition of macrophages from an M1 to an M2 phenotype. In vivo experiments using a mouse model of UC demonstrated that CCM-Co-ZIF-8 suppressed the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. These findings suggested that CCM-Co-ZIF-8 might hold promise as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of UC.

A confinement strategy for stabilizing two-dimensional carbon / CoP hybrids with enhanced hydrogen evolution

Yue Lai,Wei Xia,Jingjing Li,Junjie Pan,Cheng Jiang,Zexing Cai,Chao Wu,Xianli Huang,Tao Wang,Jianping He

Two-dimensional carbon/CoP hybrids catalysts usually exhibit extraordinary performance especially in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) application because of their unique morphology which bring unique physical and chemical properties. Although Co-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoleaf (Co-ZIF-L) is quite attractive as carbon-based catalyst precursor, carbonization and phosphorization processes would normally induce Co-ZIF-L derived CoP/N-doped carbon (CoP-NC) catalyst to occur structural collapse due to the shrinkage stress and strong reducibility of PH 3 , seriously restricting the structural advantage of these catalysts. To this end, a carbon-shell confinement strategy by polydopamine (PDA) is developed to improve the structural stability of these catalysts. The precursor that Co-ZIF-L coated with PDA (Co-ZIF-L@PDA) has a more stable structure, which makes the electrocatalyst CoP-NC possess componential advantage and the merits of two-dimensional structure. The resultant CoP-NC exhibits enhanced activity and good stability for pH-universal HER. The overpotentials of CoP-NC at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 are 145 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution and 167 mV in 1 M KOH solution. Additionally, the electrocatalyst CoP-NC displays comparable activity and stability for HER in neutral media as well.

Tumor microenvironment-activated core–shell structure Cu-Q@Co/ZIF-8 for chemotherapy/chemodynamic therapy of cancer

Fang Qi,Luo Chongwen,Guo Xiaohuan,Cai Bingbing,Zhou Yuzhu,Hu Kun,Wen Changchun

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) uses the Fenton reaction to generate highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) to achieve efficient treatment strategies for tumors. However, the high concentration of glutathione (GSH) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) can scavenge these radicals, thereby diminishing the efficacy of CDT. In this study, we propose a programmable synergistic therapeutic strategy that depletes GSH during chemotherapy (CT) and subsequently increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to achieve high-potency CDT. We constructed a Cu-Q@Co/ZIF-8 (CQZ) composite nanoplatform by encapsulating cobalt-doped ZIF-8 (Co/ZIF-8) with copper-quercetin (Cu-Q, CQ). The construction of nanoplatform significantly enhanced the water solubility of Co/ZIF-8 and CQ. When the nanoplatform reached the tumor site, the TME triggered the release of quercetin and Cu 2+ from CQ, thus enabling quercetin-based chemotherapy and Cu 2+ -mediated GSH depletion while generating Cu + . Subsequently, the Co 2+ released from Co/ZIF-8 acted with Cu + to catalyze a Fenton-like reaction with endogenous H 2 O 2 , efficiently producing toxic ∙OH radicals for CDT. Throughout the treatment process, Cu 2+ was preferentially released in response to the TME to consume GSH, not only generating Fenton-active Cu + but also preventing the GSH-mediated scavenging of ∙OH. This procedural mechanism has substantially enhanced the therapeutic efficacy of CDT following CT.

Programmable Photothermal Upcycling of Mixed Polyesters via Light-Intensity Gating on a Bifunctional Zn/Co-ZIF-C Catalyst

Haoyi Wang,Le Xu,Chunying Si,Yankai Zhang,Yunbiao Qi,Quanxing Zhang,Wei Jiang

Mixed polyester wastes with different chemical structures remain a key obstacle to achieving circularity in plastic utilization. Here, a programmable one-pot photothermal strategy is reported using a catalyst derived from a bimetallic MOF (Zn/Co-ZIF-C) through pyrolysis of a Zn/Co-integrated precursor. This system enables the efficient and sequential depolymerization of polycarbonate (PC), polylactic acid (PLA), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in mixed streams by simply tuning the irradiation intensity. Selective glycolysis of PC, PLA, and PET is triggered at ≈420, 520, and 650 mW cm −2 , respectively, enabling stepwise monomer recovery in a single reactor. Density functional theory calculations reveal a dual-site cooperative mechanism, in which ZnO and Co-N x sites cooperatively activate ester bonds and ethylene glycol, offering a mechanistic basis for the observed substrate-specific reactivity. The Zn/Co-ZIF-C catalyst exhibits broadband light absorption, strong catalytic activity, and excellent recyclability, maintaining over 95% PET conversion across five cycles. Moreover, it achieves monomer yields above 80% from nine real-world post-consumer plastics, while simultaneously removing dyes and performing magnetic separation. This work presents a robust and scalable catalytic platform for light-controlled, selective upcycling of complex polyester mixtures, offering new opportunities for sustainable plastic circularity.

Self-templated transformation of Co-ZIF-L into hierarchical porous CoS2/Co-Ni LDHs with improved electrochemical activities

Yuming Xie,Jingqiu Li,Mengjue Cao,Yi Feng,Jianfeng Yao

CoS 2 /Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with a rational tailored pore structure are developed by partial sulfurization of Co-ZIF-L and subsequent Ni 2+ etching for the transformation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to layered double hydroxides . The as-synthesized CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs maintain the leaf-like structure and have rich hierarchical pores. More importantly, CoS 2 nanoparticles are uniformly embedded among Co-Ni LDH layers, facilitating mass diffusion and favorably exposing more active sites. Benefiting from these desirable compositional and structural features, a remarkable specific capacitance (capacity) of 1784 F/g (223 mAh/g) at 1 A/g is delivered by CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDHs. Furthermore, the as-assembled CoS 2 /Co-Ni LDH//activated carbon as the asymmetric supercapacitor device also exhibits a high energy density of 125 Wh/kg at a power density of 800 W/kg and a superb capacitance retention of 98 % after 5000 cycles, outperforming many Co-Ni LDH based electrode materials reported in the literature.

Co-ZIF reinforced kraft lignin biochar as an efficient catalyst for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived chemicals

Changzhou Chen,Wei Chen,Mengqing Zhou,Yongzhi Xiong,Xialin Ji,Minghao Zhou,Liangliang Zhang,Xiaoping Rao,Jianchun Jiang

Large amount of lignin was produced annually as a byproduct in papermaking and pulping processes, the challenges in disposal methods had posed serious obstacles for advanced carbon materials and value-added chemicals. This study involved the preparation of kraft lignin (KL) loaded metal–organic framework (ZIF-67) material derived Co nanoparticles carbon using various methods to produce kraft lignin biochar-based carbon materials (Co@NPC-KLB). The novel and advanced carbon materials was utilized for lignin derived bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation to generate high value fuels and chemicals. It could achieve nearly 100 % vanillin (VAN) conversion and 88.49 % 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) without the extra hydrogen at 240 °C in ethanol. The results demonstrated that highly active and stable Co nanoparticles, large specific surface area, smaller nano Co nanoparticles, strong metal-support interaction and rich Lewis acid sites on the surface of biochar support exhibited a positive promoting effect on VAN hydrodeoxygenation to generate MMP. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) also confirmed that synergistic effect of Co nanoparticles and kraft lignin biochar promoted a high adsorption energy of VAN on the surface of kraft lignin biochar, enhanced the catalytic ability of the hydrodeoxygenation process. This study provided a novel approach for utilizing kraft lignin in preparation functional catalysts, opening up new opportunities for designing efficient biochar-based materials for advanced carbon materials and high-value chemicals.

Ce-Doped Co-ZIF as an efficient catalyst for hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols: From guaiacol to cyclohexanol

Mengqing Zhou,Xialin Ji,Changzhou Chen,Liangliang Zhang,Jianchun Jiang

Through the utilization of diverse technological processes, lignin could be transformed into a multitude of valuable chemicals and fuels. This transformation not only reduces our dependence on fossil energy but also fosters the promotion of environmental sustainability. In this study, Ce metal was incorporated into the zeolite imidazolium framework-67 (ZIF-67) using the impregnation method to prepare a series of bimetallic catalysts . Using isopropanol solvent as the hydrogen source, guaiacol was effectively converted to cyclohexanol with over 80.0% selectivity over the optimum catalyst at 240 °C, 1.5 MPa N 2 , for 4 hours. The prepared catalysts were subjected to characterization methods such as BET, SEM, XPS , TEM , XRD , H 2 -TPR and NH 3 -TPD. The results of the characterization show that the addition of Ce changed the zeolitic imidazolium ester backbone structure of ZIF-67 and encouraged the emergence of more oxygen vacancies , which strengthened the catalyst hydrodeoxygenation activity and reducibility . Based on the findings of the catalytic performance tests and a retesting, the reaction pathway of the guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation process was suggested.
