The agglomeration phenomenon of metals in transition metal-based carbon catalysts has been one of the major reasons hindering their replacement of commercial Pt/C. Its self-aggregation phenomenon greatly limits the number of active sites and reactivity, which affects the catalytic performance. To overcome this issue, this work prepared a high N-doped carbon structure catalyst coated with high-dispersion FeCo/Fe 3 C nanoparticles. This was achieved by utilizing the advantages of the Prussian blue analogs (PBA) metal framework structure to suppress the self-aggregation of metals, thereby achieving high dispersion. Additionally, the introduction of melamine compensated for the nitrogen loss caused by the carbonization of PBA, thus increasing the nitrogen doping content. The experimental results show that when the calcination temperature is 850 °C and the mass ratio of melamine to FeCo PBA is 5, the half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of the FeCo@NC catalyst prepared can reach 0.857 V, and the current intensity of FeCo@NC catalyst can maintain 97.12 % during 40,000 s stability test, which is much higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the prepared FeCoNC@-850-5 and commercial Pt/C catalysts were used as cathode catalysts for Zn-air batteries (ZAB), and FeCoNC@-850-5 had higher open-circuit voltage (OCV), power density, and specific capacity. These findings demonstrate that the catalyst possesses excellent catalytic activity and promising application prospects, providing a new perspective for the design of efficient oxygen reduction catalysts based on the coupling of bimetallic alloys and N-doped carbon materials.

Burgeoning oxidation technology based on peracetic acid (PAA) has been widely used to treat organic pollutants, and the development of efficient catalytic materials is a vital theme. In this study, a novel catalyst FeCo@NC was designed to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a typical sulfonamide antibiotic, which not only owned excellent activation performance of PAA, but also presented superior recycling performance and stability. Ten μM of SMX were nearly completely removed within 90 min under the conditions of 25 °C, pH at 7.0, 0.5 g/L catalyst, and 100 μM of initial PAA. FeCo@NC/PAA technique possessed a satisfactory degradation performance on SMX in a wide pH range, and even in the presence of a variety of anions and humic acids. The 90-min degradation rate of SMX in FeCo@NC/PAA system remained above 70 % after 4 cycles. Metal ion leaching data together with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results confirmed the reusability and stability of this material. Superoxide and organic radicals eliminated SMX via the bond cleavage of S–C or S–N, hydroxylation and coupling reaction to yield 11 intermediates. The S–N bond cleavage was an eco-friendly route. This study provides a reference for the design of effective catalysts and their application in the treatment of refractory organic pollutants.

A bimetallic FeCo-NC nanozyme was synthesized via pyrolysis of a FeCo-ZIF precursor and evaluated for its enzyme-like catalytic activity and colorimetric sensing performance. Structural characterizations confirmed the formation of a nitrogen-doped porous carbon framework with uniformly dispersed Fe and Co active sites. The FeCo-NC nanozyme exhibited superior oxidase-like activity compared with monometallic counterparts, which is attributed to the synergistic interaction between Fe and Co sites that facilitates electron transfer. Kinetic analysis revealed that the catalytic reaction follows typical Michaelis-Menten behavior, with a low Michaelis constant toward TMB, indicating high substrate affinity. Based on the efficient oxidation of TMB and the subsequent reduction of oxidized TMB by ascorbic acid (AA), a label-free colorimetric sensing platform was constructed. The proposed system showed a concentration-dependent response toward AA with two linear detection ranges (0.1–5 and 5–50 μM) and exhibited high selectivity against common interfering species. This work demonstrates that MOF-derived bimetallic nanozymes are effective catalysts for colorimetric sensing and provides a feasible strategy for the development of nanozyme-based platforms for biomolecule detection.

The development of sensitive and selective methods for detecting pesticide residues has become paramount for ensuring food safety. In this work, a high-performance molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on the composite of Cu-BTC- and FeCo-ZIF-derived N-doped carbon (FeCo@NC), synthesized by pyrolysis and electrodeposition, was developed for Benomyl (BN) detection. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In this sensing system, the Cu-BTC/FeCo@NC composite used as the electrode substrate displayed a large specific surface area, high electronic conductivity, and rich active catalytic sites, demonstrating excellent electrocatalytic ability toward BN oxidation. Meanwhile, Cu-BTC, with its abundant surface functional groups, facilitated strong hydrogen bonding interactions with the imprinted template molecule of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), promoting the formation of a uniform molecularly imprinted membrane on the substrate material surface. The introduced MIP-PEDOT could enhance the selective recognition and enrichment of the target BN, leading to an amplified detection signal. Thanks to the synergistic effects between Cu-BTC/FeCo@NC and MIP-PEDOT, the proposed sensor achieved a low detection limit of 1.67 nM. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor exhibited high selectivity, reproducibility, and interference resistance in detecting BN. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of BN in vegetable and fruit samples, indicating its potential for use in practical applications.

Aluminum-air batteries (AAB) have been expected as one promising energy technology for next-generation electrical vehicles owing to their low costs, light weights, high specific energy, environmental benignity and mechanical rechargeability. Yet currently, efficient catalytic materials for air cathodes are mostly based on expensive and scarce precious metal Pt, which have severely impeded the implantation of AAB. Herein, a series of non-precious binary FeCo-nitrogen-doped carbon (FeCo-NC) materials with heavily loaded Fe/Co species and in-situ generated interconnected carbon nanotube (CNT) were synthesized from cost-effective materials. With merits of dense active sites, largely exposed surface area, and good electron/ionic conductivity, the as-made binary FeCo-NC with optimal synthetic parameters exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction performance in alkaline electrolyte , rendering high onset potential of 1.05 V and half-wave potential of 0.91 V, which surpass those of Pt/C by 50 and 40 mV, respectively. Remarkably, the FeCo-NC-assembled AAB delivers an exceptional open-circuit voltage of 1.88 V and a large specific power of 188 mW cm −2 , and additionally maintains high discharge voltage of 1.70 V at the current density of 10.0 mA cm −2 . Our work renders a new type of high-performance air cathode material for AAB implantation.

Zinc-air batteries, as one of the emerging areas of interest in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, are hampered by the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and still suffer from the issues of low energy density. Herein, we report a MOF-on-MOF-derived electrocatalyst, FeCo@NC-II, designed to efficiently catalyze both ORR ( E half = 0.907 V) and OER ( E j=10 = 1.551 V) within alkaline environments, surpassing esteemed noble metal benchmarks (Pt/C and RuO 2 ). Systematically characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of iron and cobalt bimetallic and the optimized distribution of nitrogen configuration improved the charge distribution of the catalysts, which in turn optimized the adsorption / desorption of oxygenated intermediates accelerating the reaction kinetics. While the unique leaf-like core–shell morphology and excellent pore structure of the FeCo@NC-II catalyst caused the improvement of mass transfer efficiency, electrical conductivity and stability. The core and shell of the precursor constructed through the MOF-on-MOF strategy achieved the effect of 1 + 1 > 2 in mutual cooperation. Further application to zinc-air batteries (ZABs) yielded remarkable power density (212.4 mW/cm 2 ), long cycle (more than 150 h) stability and superior energy density (∼1060 Wh/kg Zn). This work provides a methodology and an idea for the design, synthesis and optimization of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Diseases caused by bacterial infections significantly threaten human health. However, the overuse of conventional antibiotics has led to rising drug resistance, necessitating the development of alternative antimicrobial strategies. In this study, we designed and synthesized a dual single-atom FeC nanozyme supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC), incorporating Fe single-atom sites, Co single-atom sites, and Fe-Co dual-atom sites. Characterization and theoretical calculations confirmed that the catalytic performance of FeCo-NC was superior to those of single-atom Fe-NC and Co-NC. Photothermal experiments demonstrated FeCo-NC’s excellent photothermal properties and high photothermal conversion efficiency. Chemodynamic studies revealed its ability to efficiently catalyze H 2 O 2 for generating reactive oxygen species, outperforming Fe-NC and Co-NC in catalytic kinetics. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that FeCo-NC effectively eliminated bacteria against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA) (99.36 %) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) (99.76%) through the synergistic effects of photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy. Transcriptome analysis further showed that FeCo-NC altered bacterial gene expression related to growth, metabolism, and membrane structure, enhancing its antibacterial efficacy. Beyond its antimicrobial effects, FeCo-NC reduced inflammation at infected wound sites, promoted macrophage polarization, enhanced collagen deposition, and accelerated wound healing. This study presents a promising antibiotic-free strategy for the clinical treatment of infected wounds.

The high-cost synthesis of highly dispersed non-noble metal–nitrogen–carbon (MNC) electrocatalysts hinders their practical applications. Here, we have developed a cost/time-efficient synthesis method for MNC electrocatalysts with highly dispersed metal sites, using the commercially available cheap ZnO as the Zn source, reducing the cost of Zn usage by over 80%. Our specially chosen solvent formamide can react with ZnO and allow the formation of nano-sized ZnFeCo–Nx complexes uniformly distributed in the formamide-derived high-N-doped carbon substrate. Further annealing the ZnFeCo–N–C precursor will produce a highly dispersed FeCo–NC target product. Electrochemical measurements show that the prepared FeCo–NC is an excellent electrocatalyst for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), rendering superior onset and half-wave potentials of 1.05 and 0.92 V, respectively. The Al–air battery assembled using this also shows a high specific power (204.9 mW cm−2) and a large specific capacity (552 mA h g−1 at 10 mA cm−2), exceeding those of the 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Our method may inspire the scalable and low-cost production of highly dispersed MNC electrocatalysts and their wide range of practical applications.

Solid-phase templates are commonly used for building hollow-structured carbon materials (CMs) but often demand post treatments to remove templates. Herein, we develop an efficient and general method to construct hollow carbonaceous structure via the templating of sacrificial carbon nitride (termed as f-NC) without post treatment. The f-NC template can be decomposed under high-temperature annealing, additionally, it can serve as N source to enrich the N content. Applying f-NC template, we manage the synthesis of hollow-structured highly dispersed binary FeCo-nitrogen-carbon material (termed as f-NC@FeCo-NC). Its hollow feature is confirmed by direct observation using HRTEM . Meanwhile, Fe/Co in oxidation states have been verified uniformly distributing in heavily N-doped CMs (N content ∼ 13.2 at.%). The resulted f-NC@FeCo-NC, as examined by electrochemical measurements, exhibits highly efficient performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline medium. It respectively shows much enhanced onset and half-wave potentials of 1.01 and 0.89 V relative to the FeCo-NC that is obtained without f-NC, in contrast, 20 wt% Pt/C shows 0.95 V onset potential and 0.83 V half-wave potential. The f-NC@FeCo-NC catalyst also shows excellent Al-air battery performance when applied as cathode, which possesses a high open circuit voltage of 1.91 V and a high peak power density of 241 mW cm −2 . We believe this sacrificial f-NC can be applied as general template for the fabrication of other hollow-structured carbon-based materials for broad electrochemical applications.

Carbon materials featuring hierarchical pores and atomically dispersed metal sites are promising catalysts for energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to construct functional carbon materials with a fluffy peony-like structure and dense binary FeCo-N x active sites (termed as f-FeCo-CNT). By regulating the metal content in precursors, a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive carbon nanotubes network was in-situ formed throughout the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC matrix during pyrolysis. Taking advantage of rich pore hierarchy and co-existence of highly active FeCo-N x sites and beneficial FeCo alloy nanoparticles, the f-FeCo-CNT material exhibited excellent bifunctional performance towards oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER) with respect to the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC (SA-f-FeCo-NC) and commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 mixture, surpassing the SA-f-FeCo-NC with a 20 mV higher ORR half-wave potential and a 100 mV lower OER overpotential (at 10.0 mA/cm 2 ). Remarkably, the f-FeCo-CNT-assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) possessed a maximum specific power of 195.8 mW/cm 2 , excellent rate capability, and very good cycling stability at large current density of 20.0 mA/cm 2 . This work provides a facile and feasible synthetic strategy of constructing low-cost cathode materials with excellent comprehensive ZAB performance.

This study presents a novel electrochemical strategy for detecting organophosphorus pesticides based on the synergistic catalytic of red kidney bean esterase (RKBE) and iron–cobalt dual-atom catalyst embedded in N-doped carbon carrier (FeCo–NC). RKBE was extracted from the widely cultivated British red kidney beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) . FeCo–NC exhibited excellent electrocatalytic and peroxidase-like activity, catalyzing o -phenylenediamine oxidation to produce electroactive 2,3-diaminophenazine, which served as signal probe generating a sensitive cathodic current. Notably, RKBE product 1-naphthol inhibited FeCo–NC activity, while organophosphorus pesticides counteracted this inhibition by suppressing RKBE activity, restoring the electrochemical signal of 2,3-diaminophenazine. Leveraging this signal-regulation mechanism, a dichlorvos sensor was developed, with wide linear range (50–50,000 pM), low detection limit (14 pM), and excellent real-sample recovery (93.33%–107.08%), demonstrating practical application potential. This study provides an affordable and easy-to-operate approach for large-scale on-site monitoring of organophosphorus pesticide residues in foods.

An atomically dispersed FeCo-NC material with the 3D flower-like morphology was used as a unique substrate for the controllable deposition of ultrasmall NiFe layered double hydroxide nanodots (termed as NiFe-NDs) to simultaneously promote the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The size-limiting growth of NiFe-NDs (~4.0 nm in diameter) was realized via the confinement of the 3D flower-like mesoporous structure and the rich N/O functionality of FeCo-NC. Benefiting from the distinctive structure with the simultaneously maximum exposure of both OER and ORR active sites, the NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC composite showed an ORR halfwave potential of 0.85 V and an OER potential of 1.66 V in 0.1 mol L −1 KOH at 10.0 mA cm −2 . In-situ Raman analysis suggested the activity of OER was derived from the Ni sites on NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC. Moreover, the NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC-assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) exhibited a very small discharge- charge voltage gap of 0.87 V at 20 mA cm −2 and robust cycling stability. Furthermore, the NiFe-ND/FeCo-NC composite was also applicable for fabricating all-solid-state ZAB to power wearable electronics with superior cycling stability under deformation. Our work could enlighten a new applicable branch of atomically dispersed metal-nitrogen-carbon materials as unique substrates for fabricating multifunctional electrocatalysts.
