Multishelled FeCo@FeCoP@C Hollow Spheres as Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Catalysts

Juntao Zhang,Min Li,Xin Liang,Zhongbin Zhuang

Active nonprecious metal-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are critical for the clean and sustainable generation of hydrogen. Here, we synthesized multishelled FeCo@FeCoP@C hollow spheres by the carbonization and phosphorization of the FeCo-MIL-88 metal-organic framework. Owing to both composition (FeCo mixed phosphide) and morphology (multishelled morphology) effects, the as-obtained FeCo@FeCoP@C exhibits excellent HER performance with a low overpotential of 65 mV to achieve an HER current density of 10 mA cm–2 and high stability in acidic solution. Density functional theory calculations show that the FeCoP have the optimal hydrogen absorption energy than that of FeP and CoP. The carbon shell prevents the oxidation of the phosphides, and the FeCo core provides better conductivity. Our work provides a new method to synthesize multishelled structure catalysts, which has potential applications in the further hydrogen production.

Construction of Al-doped FeCoP nanosheet array with superhydrophilic/superaerophobic characteristics as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for activating alkaline overall water splitting

Jinmei He,Yuqing Wang,Leihuan Mu,Jiehui Li,Yurou Dong,Ying Zhang,Yuan Deng,Pu Feng,Mengnan Qu

Hydrogen is regarded as “the ultimate clean energy source”, with the virtues of zero pollution, renewability and abundant reserves, which is expected to alleviate problems including global climate change and energy crisis. Designing reasonable methods for synthesizing efficient, inexpensive, and stable electrocatalysts for water splitting is urgently needed. In this study, we construct Al-FeCoP nanosheet array on nickel foam (Al-FeCoP/NF) with superhydrophilic/superaerophobic properties. The superhydrophilic and underwater superaerophobic surface accelerate the electrolyte penetration and bubble dissipation, thereby taking the edge off the “bubble shielding effect”. The electronic structure of the electrocatalyst is tuned through heteroatom doping and phosphorization, which effectively enhances the conductivity of the catalyst. Strikingly, the resulting Al-FeCoP/NF electrode shows remarkable activity in alkaline media, which only requires an overpotential of 121 mV and 215 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. When applied for overall water splitting, the assembled two-electrode electrolyzer only needs a low voltage of 1.56 V to afford a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and can maintain over 100 h without the obvious activity attenuation, which enhances the overall catalytic activity and represents superior long-term stability. In addition, the abundant wind and solar energy resources are employed to generate electricity directly, which is subsequently convert into green hydrogen by the water electrolysis in laboratory conditions. This work provides a new idea for the manufacture of low-cost, high-activity bifunctional transition-metal phosphide electrocatalyst by element doping for green hydrogen production.

Dense r-Ru/FeCoP heterointerfaces induced by a defect-assisted strategy for ultrastable alkaline overall water splitting

Yilin Wang,Xiao Chen,Yunmei Du,Shuangshuang Li,Mengmeng Wang,Yu Yang,Lei Wang

Simplifying the anchoring process of Ru nanoparticles (NPs) and activating their bifunctional activity are challenges in the construction of Ru-based catalysts. In this work, FeCoP nanosheets anchored by Ru NPs (r-Ru/FeCoP) were innovatively synthesized using an oxygen defect-assisted-gas-phase phosphorization strategy. Surprisingly, the η100 values of r-Ru/FeCoP in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes were 0.8 and 0.58 times those of Pt/C and RuO2, respectively. Notably, the rich Ru NPs as HER active sites on r-Ru/FeCoP enhanced the conductivity of the catalyst and promoted the reaction kinetics for HER, while the metal atoms on the FeCoP nanosheets served as OER active sites to accelerate the desorption of O2. The synergy between the two promoted the improvement of overall water splitting efficiency. Overall, this work provides a new approach for the development of low-cost bifunctional catalysts with high Ru utilization.

Interface engineering to optimize the catalytic activity of Fe, Co, and Ti sites in FeCoP/MXene toward efficient overall water splitting

Wei He-He,Zhang Xin-Xin,Sun Si-Wei,Gai Shi-Li,Yu Hai-Tao,Xie Ying

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs), with tunable electronic structures and diverse compositions, are promising candidates for electrocatalytic water splitting. However, their unsatisfactory electrical conductivity and tendency to aggregate during reactions result in structural instability, ultimately hindering further improvement of their electrocatalytic performance. To address these issues, a bamboo-leaf-like FeCoP/MXene heterojunction was synthesized by hydrothermal and thermal treatments, utilizing highly conductive MXene as the substrate. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterization reveal that strong Ti–O–Co/Fe covalent bond are formed between MXene and FeCoP through hybridization of O 2p and Co/Fe 3d orbitals, which enhance the structural stability of the interface and facilitate the effective anchoring of FeCoP on the MXene surface. Consequently, the structural stability and electrical conductivity of the catalyst are improved simultaneously. Additionally, interfacial charge redistribution optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption at the Co, Fe, and Ti sites while promoting the adsorption and activation of water molecules. These factors interact synergistically, leading to enhanced bi-functional electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In a FeCoP/MXene (+||−) two-electrode system, the catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm –2 at a potential of 1.5 V, which is superior to the RuO 2 (+)||Pt/C (−) system. The assembled water splitting device exhibits long-term stability for up to 100 h at a current density of 100 mA cm –2 . Furthermore, an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) equipped with FeCoP/MXene as both anode and cathode achieves an industrial-grade current density of 500 mA cm –2 at 1.83 V. These results highlight the critical role of interfacial engineering in enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of TMPs for water splitting and provide valuable insights for the design of novel bifunctional TMP catalysts. N-doped carbon nanosheets packaged ultra-small FeCoP toward efficient water splitting

Peng Wei,Xin Ye,Jianhua Jiao,Fan Wu,Haodong Zhang,Shaoyang Wu,Shanshan Lv,Qirui Liang,Yurong Ren

Iron phosphide (FeP) has garnered significant attention due to its abundant iron reserves, low cost and impressive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Nevertheless, sluggish charge transport, large particle size and poor oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity make it still difficult to meet the desired practical applications. As we know, heterogeneous element doping, porous two-dimensional structure design, and nanoconfinement control can effectively improve the mass/charge transfer rate and expose more active sites. Hence, ultra-small bimetallic iron-cobalt phosphide nanoparticles encapsulated and dispersed in two-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet (FeCoP@NC) catalysts were successfully constructed. The optimized FeCoP@NC shows outstanding electrocatalytic stability and activity toward OER and HER under alkaline conditions. The overall water splitting performance was further measured by using FeCoP@NC as both anode and cathode, which also delivers good performance indicators. This work provides a new perspective and potential value for the rational design of non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts.

Prussian Blue Analogues Derived Hollow FeCoP Nanocubes for Electrocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Yuzhi LI,Jinyu WANG,Shuai ZOU,Aihong WANG,Huize JIANG,Kaibo WANG

Cleverly designing and synthesizing bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and exceptional stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hold profound importance in the realm of renewable energy technologies. Here we demonstrated the fabrication of FeCoP hollow nanocubes by precisely controlling the oxidation-phosphorization processing on Prussian blue analogues. Owing to the robust electronic interaction and hollow structure, the obtained FeCoP material, when utilized for catalyzing HER and OER in a 1 M KOH solution, requires overpotentials of merely 74 mV and 219 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Importantly, when used as a bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting, FeCoP can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low cell voltage of only 1.58 V and exhibits impressive durability. After a prolonged test of 52 hours under a constant current density, there is no significant degradation performance decay. The current method offers a broader avenue for the controllable synthesis of phosphide electrocatalysts in practical applications.

Ultra-porous Co foam supported FeCoP electrode for high efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction

Yuantao Pei,Haijun Zhang,Lei Han,Liang Huang,Longhao Dong,Quanli Jia,Shaowei Zhang

Development an alternative approach to efficiently and economically produce hydrogen from water to replace non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the great challenges in the energy field. In this paper, a Co foam (CF) with 90% porosity and pore size of a few tens of micrometers was prepared, on which FeCoP nanoflowers were in-situ formed. Such a combination was used as a new electrocatalyst/self-supporting electrode for high efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction. Thanks to the larger surface area (and thus many more active sites), and quicker mass transfer through the porous structure, the CF supported FeCoP electrode exhibited much better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance than the commercial Ni foam supported counterpart prepared under identical conditions. In the case of the former, only −44 mV overpotential was required to achieve a geometric current density of −10 mA cm−2, and the electrode showed a high stability at a current density < −500 mA cm−2. The electrode developed in this work could be potentially used as a novel electrode for future large-scale production of hydrogen. In addition, the novel strategy reported here could be similarly used to develop many other types of self-supporting electrodes with further improved HER performance.

MOF-derived carbon-containing Fe doped porous CoP nanosheets towards hydrogen evolution reaction and hydrodesulfurization

Chen Wen,Ligang Chen,Yating Xie,Jingying Bai,Xin Liang

In order to explore the effect of Fe doped CoP nanosheets on both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrodesulfurization (HDS), FeCoP/C nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal process with Fe doped ZIF-67/C for the growth of FeCo-hydroxides nanosheets , as well as a following low-temperature phosphorization process. The performance evaluation results show that the FeCoP/C nanosheet exhibits an excellent acidic HER performance and an ordinary HDS performance compared to CoP/C and FeP/C catalysts. Experimental characterization and density functional theory results show that the high HER activity of the FeCoP/C nanosheet can be attributed to the fact that the nanosheet structure facilitates the exposure of active sites and the doped Fe atoms make CoP have a suitable hydrogen adsorption energy , while the ordinary HDS activity of the FeCoP/C nanosheet can be attributed to the fact that the doped Fe atoms can inhibit the cleavage of C–S bonds by CoP.

Ruge Zhao,Baoxia Ni,Luming Wu,Pingchuan Sun,Tiehong Chen

Efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are of paramount importance for electrochemical energy applications. Herein, a high-efficient carbon-based trifunctional electrocatalyst FeCoP/C is synthesized through a simple one-step supramolecular-assisted method, in which a supramolecular gel structure is formed by phosphoric acid and melamine to allow the efficient and homogeneous incorporation of highly active species. Experimentally, the as-obtained catalysts exhibit practical trifunctional activities in the ORR, OER, and HER. In alkaline electrolytes , requiring overpotentials of 95 and 282 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively, and presents the significantly increased alkalic ORR activity, with the half-wave potential of 0.849 V. Furthermore, the FeCoP/C also showed good integrated capabilities for Zn-air batteries. This supramolecular-assisted strategy could bring new inspiration to boost the electrocatalytic performance of transition metal-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Interface and morphology engineering of Ru-FeCoP hollow nanocages as alkaline electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Liugen Zhang,Xianglei Cao,Changyan Guo,Afaq Hassan,Yi Zhang,Jide Wang

Interface and Morphology engineering strategies of electrocatalysts are of great importance to promote water splitting performance, although still facing many challenges. In this work, we present a facile method for preparing Ru-anchored hollow FeCoP nanocages electrocatalyst with ultrathin sheets. The hollow structure composed of ultrathin nanosheets and rich heterogeneous interfaces benefit the as-synthesized catalyst to exhibit small overpotentials of 310 mV and 94 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively. When Ru-FeCoP nanocages were employed as the bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting, the potential of 1.65 V was obtained to reach the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 . The experimental results confirmed that the formation of hierarchical hollow structure facilitated the exposure of active sites and enhanced the electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, XPS and DFT data also reveal that the presence of heterogeneous interfaces changed the electronic structure, optimized the absorption of the intermediates, significantly reduced the energy barrier of water dissociation and promoted the release of H 2 . This work offers an effective route for rational design of low-loading noble metal-anchored metal phosphide with the hierarchical hollow structure and rich interfaces towards overall water splitting.

Construction of Ru/FeCoP heterointerface to drive dual active site mechanism for efficient overall water splitting

Yilin Wang,Yunmei Du,Ziqi Fu,Jinhong Ren,Yunlei Fu,Lei Wang

The interface engineering strategy is deemed to be a direct approach for boosting the water splitting activity of materials, but it is still a challenge to achieve both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities exceeding those of precious-metal catalysts. Herein, a tunable photodeposition method was utilized for the construction of Ru@FeCoP with rich Ru/FeCoP heterointerfaces. Strikingly, the η100 value of Ru@FeCoP was only 0.0741 V for the HER and 0.314 V for OER, which was reduced by 63.8% and 55.2% compared to Pt/C and RuO2 benchmarks, respectively. The mechanism investigation revealed that Ru at the Ru/FeCoP heterointerfaces not only offers highly active sites for HER but also pulls electrons from FeCoP, which facilitates the generation of Fe and Co with high valency, thereby increasing the OER activity. This work overcomes the problem of low water-splitting efficiency of precious metals by constructing a metal/phosphide heterostructure to drive a dual-active site mechanism and provides an effective route for the preparation of high-performance water-dissociation electrocatalysts.

Hollow FeCo-FeCoP@C nanocubes embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages for efficient overall water splitting

Yuzhi Li,Siwei Li,Jing Hu,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yuchen Du,Xijiang Han,Xi Liu,Ping Xu

Designing readily available and highly active electrocatalysts for water splitting is essential for renewable energy technologies. Here we present the construction of FeCo-FeCoP@C hollow nanocubes encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (FeCo-FeCoP@C@NCCs) through controlled carbonization and subsequent phosphorization of a Prussian blue analogue. With stronger electronic interaction and hollow structure, the as-obtained FeCo-FeCoP@C@NCCs material requires small overpotentials of 91 mV and 280 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH toward hydrogen and oxygen evolution, respectively. More importantly, applying this material for overall water splitting, it only requires 1.64 V to afford 10 mA cm −2 and exhibits impressively durability over 40 h without obvious performance decay. The present approach inspires potentials for the controllable synthesis of multi-component catalysts for practical applications.
