Synergistic effect of trimetallic doping and π-π conjugation in NiZnCo-ZIF@HHTP for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Xiaoxi Li,Jiajia Li,Dilnur Kurbanjan,Tianhao Yu,Hong Du

Zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) structures are widely used as an efficient catalyst for metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in electrocatalysis. In this work, the structure of the trimetallic ZIFs sample was rationally designed by the method of doping with Ni 2+ and Zn 2+ . After that, a layer of highly conductive π-π conjugated organic molecules was wrapped on the trimetallic ZIFs sample to form a heterojunction structure of NiZnCo-ZIF@HHTP composite. The activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of NiZnCo-ZIF was improved after it was combined with HHTP. NiZnCo-ZIF@HHTP presents a low overpotential (η ≈ 193 mV @10 mA cm −2 ), a small Tafel slope (97.4 mV dec −1 ) and outstanding stability for OER in 1 M KOH solution. The superior OER performance of NiZnCo-ZIF@HHTP is due to the effect of doping of Ni and Zn to form a trimetallic ZIF material. The synergistic effect of Ni Zn codoped enhances the conductivity of ZIF-67 material. Meanwhile, the π-π conjugation effect of HHTP organic macromolecule can further enhance the electrical conductivity of NiZnCo-ZIF. The result suggests that the co-doping of polymetallic cations and the coating of conducting organic molecules can be vital for modifying ZIFs electrocatalysts. This work provides a meaningful reference value for modifying non-precious metal ZIFs materials in electrocatalysis.

Boosting Photocatalytic CO2 Cycloaddition with Epoxide over Facet-Dependent Cu2O@Cu3(HHTP)2 Heterojunctions

Yan Zhang,Junzhe Wang,Liang Li,Honggang Zhang,Bei Li,Xiangxiang Zhang,Zeyan Wang,Yuanyuan Liu,Peng Wang,Hefeng Cheng,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang,Zhaoke Zheng

The design of organic–inorganic heterojunctions can facilitate the separation of photoinduced charge carriers by modulating the electronic structure at the surface and interface states, showing promising applications in the field of photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition. However, the details of the surface/interface effects between these two components are still poorly understood. Herein, Cu2O@Cu3(HHTP)2 (HHTP = 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) heterojunctions were synthesized, where Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) featuring distinct crystal facets were utilized as substrates for the in situ growth of the copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu3(HHTP)2). Among them, t-Cu2O@Cu3(HHTP)2, centered on t-Cu2O with {111} and {100} facets, exhibits superior performance toward photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition to chlorinated propylene carbonate, with a conversion efficiency of 372 mmol g–1 h–1 under light. Notably, single-particle spectroscopy reveals a more efficient photogenerated carrier transfer between t-Cu2O and Cu3(HHTP)2. The results confirm that crystalline facet dependence is a key factor in semiconductor photocatalysis and an important strategy for optimizing the reactivity of photocatalysts, which provides a way to improve the photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition performance by modulating the interfacial states of organic–inorganic heterojunction structures.

In situ synthesis of dye-modified laser induced graphene/Cu3(HHTP)2 composite for glucose detection

Jia Han,Yiwei Guo,Ke Fang,Lin Wang,Bo Pei,Shenhui Ma,Xianying Dai,Yuyu Bu

The advancement of non-enzymatic glucose sensors is essential for enhancing the cost-effectiveness and continuous monitoring capabilities of glucose detection systems. Employing innovative materials and device structures constitute key strategies to achieve this objective. Herein, an in-situ growth method of laser-induced graphene (LIG) using dye-stained polyimide colloids formed films on various substrates was introduced. The cost-efficient, rapid, and portable glucose sensor was developed based on LIG patterned via direct laser writing (DLW), combining with a layer-by-layer growth method to deposit Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 (HHTP, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) onto the surface of LIG. By utilizing the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the results shows that the LIG result in an upward shift of the d-band of Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 , hindering electrons from filling into the anti-bonding orbitals and improving the adsorption ability of the intermediate product on the surface, enhancing electrode catalytic activity. The glucose sensor has achieved a wide detection range (0.01–22 mM), a low detection limit (3 μM) and an excellent sensitivity (5276 μA mM −1 cm −2 ) in the low concentration range. This work provides novel insights into the growth of LIG on various substrates and offers a non-enzymatic sensor capable of accurate glucose measurements, while demonstrating exceptional reliability, stability and precision.

NixCu3−x(HHTP)2 decorated poly-pyrrole porous nanocomposites for highly selective and stable hydrogen sulfide sensing at room temperature

Xiaoyan Lang,Xiaxia Xing,Xinhua Zhao,Lingling Du,Yingying Tian,Zhenxu Li,Xiaoyu Chen,Heliang Fan,Dachi Yang

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) sensing with high selectivity and stability is required for environmental monitoring at room temperature , however, needs further exploring. Here, Ni x Cu 3−x (HHTP) 2 decorated over poly-pyrrole nanocomposites {Ni x Cu 3−x (HHTP) 2 /PPy NCPs, HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene} have been developed for highly selective and stable H 2 S sensing at room temperature (∼ 25 ⁰C), which have been synthesized by firstly oxidating polymerizing poly-pyrrole nanoparticles and subsequently decorating with Ni x Cu 3−x (HHTP) 2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via a hydrothermal process. Typically, the Ni x Cu 3−x (HHTP) 2 /PPy NCPs are observed with spiny surface and are characterized with amorphous crystallization. Beneficially, the Ni x Cu 3−x (HHTP) 2 /PPy NCPs show excellent selectivity to H 2 S even in the presence of other interfering gases and display a 70 days-long stability that maintains 77.3% response at room temperature (∼ 25 ⁰C). Further, the sensor prototypes enable to detect H 2 S as low as 500 ppb and show stability against humidity, respectively. Theoretically, such excellent H 2 S sensing performance might be attributed to the charge transfer between H 2 S molecules and utilized copper, fast charge transports via forming bimetallic MOFs and the counteraction of PPy NPs to interfering gas. Practically, a H 2 S sensing device built with the Ni x Cu 3−x (HHTP) 2 /PPy prototype has been integrated to detect H 2 S with excellent sensing response.

Mixed matrix membranes containing exceptional Bi-HHTP MOF for highly-efficient CO2/N2 separation

Weihao Liu,Xu Jiang,Yan Yang,Lei Guo,Haoyang Wang,Lu Shao

Constructing high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with highly permeable polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) faces critical challenge of poor interfacial compatibility between MOF fillers and the polymer matrix and difficulty in maintaining a defect-free interface at high filler loading (over 30 %). In this study, a Bi-HHTP loading as high as 50 wt% and uniform dispersion with excellent interfacial integrity is achieved in our high-performance MMMs through the elaborate design of multiple synergistic interfacial interactions, including hydrogen bonding between the phenolic hydroxyl groups of the 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) ligand in the Bi-HHTP filler and the cyano groups in the PIM-1 matrix and π-π stacking between their benzene ring structures. The optimized MMM exhibits a remarkable CO 2 permeability up to 4021 Barrer with an ideal CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 42.1 which substantially outperforms the neat PIM-1 membrane and exceeds the 2019 upper bound. The enhanced separation performance of the MMMs stems mainly from the significant increase in CO 2 solubility selectivity with Bi-HHTP loading, which benefits from the inherent CO 2 affinity of Bi-HHTP and the effective suppression of N 2 dissolution by the rigidification of PIM-1 chain segments induced by strong interfacial interactions. Most importantly, the resulted high-loading MMMs exhibited remarkable structural stability, showing strong resistance to both physical aging and CO 2 -induced plasticization. This strategy overcomes the loading bottlenecks of state-of-the-art MMMs and contributes advanced membrane materials for efficient CO 2 capture.

Controllable Construction of Two-Dimensional Conductive M3(HHTP)2 Nanorods for Electrochemical Sensing of Malachite Green in Fish

Junru Li,Yunqi Huang,Yanli Zhou,Hui Dong,Haoyuan Wang,Haoran Shan,Yifei Li,Maotian Xu,Xiaobing Wang

The conductive metal–organic framework (CMOF) is a promising application nanomaterial for the construction of electrochemical sensors. Three two-dimensional conductive M3(HHTP)2 materials with larger aspect ratios were prepared by a one-pot method using acetate-based metals (Cu, Ni, Co) and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) with the introduction of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the limiting reagent. Compared with Ni3(HHTP)2 and Co3(HHTP)2, Cu3(HHTP)2 had a larger double capacitance, pore size, specific surface area, and smaller resistance. As a result, Cu3(HHTP)2 provided greater catalytic oxidation active surface area and charge transfer efficiency for malachite green (MG) detection. Hence, Cu3(HHTP)2 efficiently catalyzed MG oxidation and significantly improved the sensitivity of MG detection. Meanwhile, the oxidation current signal from the copper of Cu3(HHTP)2 was used as an internal reference signal to form a ratiometric electrochemical sensor with an MG oxidation current signal, which effectively reduced the external interference. The constructed electrochemical assay for MG detection displayed broad linearity (5–1000 nM) with a detection limit of 1.34 nM. In the meantime, MG residues in fish was evaluated and high reliability was obtained, confirming the feasibility of this valuable method for food safety and health evaluation of aquatic products.

A highly sensitive AgNPs/Ni3(HHTP)2 SERS substrate for the detection of food additives and pesticide residues

YangTao Yuan,ZhengXian Zhou,XuDong Hao,JiaJia Mi,Yu Cao,JianPing Shi

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a spectroscopic technique that utilizes nanostructured substrates and is vital in food analysis. However, enhancing SERS substrates' sensitivity and applicability remains a challenge. The conductive metal organic framework Ni3(HHTP)2 has been widely used due to its excellent conductivity and porous structure. This study combines Ni3(HHTP)2's charge transfer properties with AgNPs's localized surface plasmon resonance to create a highly sensitive SERS substrate. Firstly, rod-shaped Ni3(HHTP)2 was prepared, and then a monolayer of AgNPs film was loaded on its surface. The substrate can detect crystal violet at a concentration of 10−14 M, and Ni3(HHTP)2 has a flat structure, coupled with AgNPs film, provided good detection uniformity (Relative Standard Deviation, RSD = 10.09%). Moreover, the substrate successfully detected food additives solutions, as well as the pesticide residues on fruit surfaces by bending. This substrate offers a rapid monitoring solution for food safety, facilitating real-time detection of contaminants in daily life.

Multifunctional wearable sensor using hetero-nanoforest structural Cu-HHTP/CuCoNi-LDH composite toward applications of human motion, sound, gas and light monitoring

Tian Yuan,Yong Wang,Yiming Zhou,Aijia Zhang,Jie Meng,Ling Li,Wenming Zhang

Highly sensitive sensors with extensive applications are extremely desired in the next-generation wearable electronics for human motion monitoring, human-machine interface and intelligent robotics, while single-functional pressure sensors cannot fulfill the growing demands of modern technological advances. Herein, an all-fabric and multilayered piezoresistive sensor based on conductive metal-organic framework/layered double hydroxide (cMOF/LDH) hetero-nanoforest is demonstrated to achieve multiple applications including pulse detection, joint motion detection, sound detection and information transmission. Benefiting from the synergism of cMOF/LDH hetero-nanoforest and multilayered structure, the sensor exhibits a high sensitivity (1.61×10 9 kPa −1 ) over a broad pressure range (0-100 kPa), a fast response/recovery time (71 ms/71 ms) and a low detection limit (18 Pa), as well as reliable dynamic stability (8000 cycles). It is gratifying to note that the introduction of cMOFs endows the sensor with the potential to detect the concentration of NH 3 (1-100 ppm) and sunlight intensity (10-100 mW cm −2 ). This work shows great potential in multifunctional sensing, which enlightens a strategy for advancing the development process of highly sensitive intelligent wearable devices.

Conductive Metal–Organic Frameworks with Tunable Dielectric Properties for Boosting Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Xue Zhang,Xue-Lei Tian,Yutian Qin,Jing Qiao,Fei Pan,Na Wu,Changxian Wang,Shanyu Zhao,Wei Liu,Jie Cui,Zhao Qian,Meiting Zhao,Jiurong Liu,Zhihui Zeng

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) manifest enormous potential in promoting electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption thanks to the tailored components, topological structure, and high porosity. Herein, rodlike conductive MOFs (cMOFs) composed of adjustable metal ions of Zn, Cu, Co, or Ni and ligands of hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) are prepared to attain tunable dielectric properties for a tailored EMW absorption. Specifically, the influences of the cMOFs’ composition, charge transport characteristic, topological crystalline structure, and anisotropy microstructure on dielectric and EMW absorption performance are ascertained, advancing the understanding of EMW attenuation mechanisms of MOFs. The boosted conductive and polarization losses derived from the conjugation effects and terminal groups, as well as shape anisotropy, lead to a prominent EMW absorption of the cMOFs. The Cu-HHTP confers a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −63.55 dB at the thickness of 2.9 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 5.2 GHz. Moreover, Zn-HHTP showcases the absorption superiority in the S-band (2–4 GHz) with an RLmin of −62.8 dB at a thickness of 1.9 mm. This work not only hoists the mechanistic understanding of the structure–function relationships for the cMOFs but also offers guidelines for preparing functional MOF materials.

Defect-rich hierarchical Zn-HHTP MOFs via ammonia-modulated assembly for superior uranium sequestration

Chang Sun,Xin Yu,Shuqin Wang,Baowei Hu

Owing to their high density of active coordination sites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively explored for uranium(VI) removal. However, the adsorption performance of pristine ZnHHTP is often limited by strong interlayer π-π stacking interactions, which reduce the effective porosity, hinder mass transport, and restrict the accessibility of uranium-binding sites. Herein, we demonstrate a facile ammonia-triggered assembly and etching strategy to construct defect-rich hierarchical pores within ZnHHTP nanostructures. Morphological and structural characterizations demonstrate that ammonia modulation introduces abundant mesopores into the originally low-porosity framework, creating a hierarchical architecture. This structural evolution leads to a significantly increased specific surface area, enriched defect sites, and enhanced surface hydrophilicity. Consequently, the optimized m-ZnHHTP-25 exhibits outstanding uranium(VI) elimination performance, reaching near-equilibrium within only 100 min and a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 521.41 mg·g −1 . Mechanism studies revealed a synergistic effect contributing to the enhanced performance. The hierarchical mesopores function as ion-transport channels, significantly accelerating the mass transfer kinetics. Moreover, the abundant and highly accessible defect sites function as high-density binding locations, where catechol oxygen atoms form strong chemical coordination bonds with UO 2 2+ . This study not only presents a promising candidate material for radioactive wastewater treatment but also offers a powerful protocol for rationally designing hierarchical porosity in porosity-deficient coordination networks for environmental remediation.

Structural evolution of Cu3(HHTP)2 during acidic oxidative polymerization for enhanced PANI-based ammonia sensing

Xinyu Li,Yuanye Pan,Jiayao Du,Hanchi Shi,Shuangqing Fan,Jinghan Li,Haijiao Xie,Minghui Cao,Siqi Li,Tong Liu

Structural evolution of Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 under polymerization is revealed. • Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 -derived species and PANI synergistically enhance NH 3 sensing. • The sensor achieves a wide NH 3 detection range of 0.5–500 ppm. • The sensor exhibits reliable sensing under high humidity and bending. • The sensor realizes real-time monitoring of seafood spoilage. Ammonia (NH 3 ) is a key volatile indicator of seafood spoilage, and developing sensitive NH 3 sensors that operate stably in complex environments is highly desirable. Conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PANI) have attracted attention for room-temperature sensing, but their limited adsorption capability and environmental stability still restrict practical applications. In this work, a flexible NH 3 sensor was developed by integrating PANI with Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 through in situ oxidative polymerization. During the acidic polymerization process, Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 undergoes structural evolution, generating Cu-containing and HHTP-derived components that remain associated with the PANI matrix. The optimized PACU20 sensor exhibits a wide detection range of 0.5–500 ppm NH 3 , a high response value of 14.5 toward 100 ppm NH 3 , and rapid response/recovery times of 37/56 s. Furthermore, the sensor maintains stable sensing performance under high humidity conditions and repeated bending cycles, indicating its robustness under practical storage and flexible operating environments. The enhanced sensing behavior might be attributed to the synergistic interaction between PANI and Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 -derived components, which regulate the local chemical environment of PANI and enhance NH 3 -induced charge variation. Practically, the sensor was applied to monitor ammonia evolution during fish and shrimp spoilage, demonstrating its potential for seafood freshness evaluation.

Layer-by-Layer 2D Ultrathin Conductive Cu3(HHTP)2 Film for High-Performance Flexible Transparent Supercapacitors

Weiwei Zhao,Tiantian Chen,Weikang Wang,Shuaihang Bi,Mengyue Jiang,Kenneth Yin Zhang,Shujuan Liu,Wei Huang,Qiang Zhao

2D conductive metal–organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) naturally possess high active sites, large specific surface areas, and fast ion transport for energy-storage devices. However, the intelligent exploration of 2D c-MOFs for the emerging flexible transparent supercapacitors (FTSCs) with excellent photoelectric property and electrochemical activity is rarely implemented. Herein, 2D conductive ultrathin Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) film is synthesized on the indium tin oxide/polyethylene terephthalate (ITO/PET) substrate for flexible transparent conductive electrodes (FTCEs) through the layer-by-layer assembly method. The interconnected conductive frameworks possess the cooperative superiority of low internal resistance, fast electrolyte ion diffusion, and quick electron transfer. Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 -15/ITO/PET FTCEs show high photoelectric property of T 550 nm = 82.2% and R s = 49.1 Ω sq −1 , and high areal capacitance ( C A ) of 1700 µF cm −2 . The corresponding symmetrical FTSCs ( T 550 nm = 62.1%) exhibit excellent C A of 939.2 µF cm −2 at the current density of 7 µA cm −2 , superior rate capability (63.9% at 150 µA cm −2 ), long-term cycling stability (85% after 3000 cycles), and mechanical flexibility under different bending angles. This work provides key insights into the design and synthesis of 2D c-MOF films for flexible transparent energy-storage devices.
