This study aimed to fabricate carbon-plastic composites using acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) as the matrix material and modified porous graphite charcoal (PGC) as the reinforcement through a hot-pressing method. K 2 FeO 4 modification and acidification can promote the increase of the formation of graphitized structure and specific surface area, which improved the mechanical properties of ABS/PGC composites. Particularly, the 25 vol% ABS/PGC-H + composites exhibited maximum tensile strength and flexural strength of 36.40 and 47.57 MPa, respectively. The degradation temperature and the maximum weight loss temperature of 25 vol% ABS/PGC-H + composites decreased by 8°C and 12°C compared with ABS/PGC-900. It can be seen PGC modification reduced the thermal stability of the composites. Additionally, the resistivity of 25 vol% ABS/PGC-H + was 1.997 Ω*m lower than that of 25 vol% ABS/PGC-900, indicating improved conductivity. Moreover, the 25 vol% ABS/PGC-H + composite exhibited slightly higher dielectric properties and dielectric losses than 25 vol% ABS/PGC-900. Further research is needed to improve the performance of ABS/PGC through the optimization of the K 2 FeO 4 concentration and enhancement in the graphitization degree and porosity of PGC. These optimizations can strengthen the interactions between the filler and matrix, leading to excellent composite properties.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) offers a promising minimally invasive treatment for breast cancer, but its efficacy is limited by the hostile tumor microenvironment (TME), including hypoxia and high glutathione (GSH) levels. Although various strategies to improve oxygen concentration or reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) resistance for enhanced PDT have been explored, they typically require intricate design and complex synthesis of multifunctional nanocarriers. Thus, this study introduces a facile K 2 FeO 4 -induced strategy to enhance PDT efficiency in breast cancer through the tumor in situ synthesis of Fe 2 O 3 and O 2 . Inspired by the successful application of K 2 FeO 4 in ecological remediation and hemostasis, K 2 FeO 4 reacts with GSH, biological system, H 2 O 2 , and water, to generate Fe 2 O 3 and O 2 . Intratumoral injection of K 2 FeO 4 improves the TME, followed by Ce6 administration to enhance PDT through synergistic ferroptosis. This approach boosts PDT efficacy significantly by increasing ROS generation, lipid peroxidation, and inhibiting GSH and GPX4. Proteomic analysis revealed alterations in key pathways, including endocytosis and energy metabolism. This K 2 FeO 4 -PDT strategy creates a positive feedback loop by enhancing oxidative stress, providing an interesting and promising approach to PDT.

In the penicillin fermentation production industry, a large amount of waste bacterial residue is generated annually, posing significant potential risks to the environment. Currently, the most common method of disposal, incineration, wastes a considerable amount of biomass resources. This study utilizes penicillin fermentation bacterial residue as the raw material to prepare two types of high-performance magnetic biochar activated by KOH/K 2 FeO 4 (K 2 FeO 4 -BC, KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC) for the adsorption of ofloxacin. The results indicate that the addition of KOH effectively improves the biochar’s adsorption performance for ofloxacin. The BET specific surface areas of the two materials are 777.88 m 2 ·g −1 and 846.16 m 2 ·g −1 , respectively. The average mesopore diameter of KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC is 5.34 nm, and the mesopore volume accounts for over 99.5% of the total pore volume. At 298K, the saturated adsorption capacity of KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC for ofloxacin is 289.86 mg·g −1 . The experiment demonstrates that the adsorption behavior of ofloxacin on KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC is more consistent with the Freundlich model and the second-order kinetic model. KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC achieves rapid removal of ofloxacin, with the adsorption removal effect reaching over 95% of adsorption saturation within 30 min. Repeated use experiments show that after five cycles, KOH/K 2 FeO 4 -BC retains 56.71% of its initial adsorption performance. Graphical abstract

Solid-liquid phase change materials (PCMs) possess green and reversible thermal storage characteristics, but their application is limited by liquid leakage in the molten state and the low thermal conductivity of solid-liquid PCMs. Biochar (BC), with its inherent porous architecture and abundant surface functionalities, was synthesized through K2FeO4 activated carbonization of straw, a representative agricultural residue, demonstrating exceptional potential as a sustainable matrix material. After loading polyethylene glycol, the composite PCMs were obtained (BC/PEG). The research focused on investigating the effects of carbonization temperature and K2FeO4 on the structural properties of biochar. The results indicated that when the carbonization temperature is 800 °C and the proportion of K2FeO4 is 1:1, the specific surface area of BC reaches 1463.85 m2/g. The BC/PEG has excellent heat storage performance, with a loading rate as high as 74.8% and a melting enthalpy of 120.7 J/g. While maintaining a high loading rate, BC/PEG800-1 exhibited a thermal conductivity of 0.449 W/(m·K), representing a 38.6% enhancement over that of pure PEG. The findings suggest that biochar derived from K2FeO4 activated biomass effectively addresses PCM leakage and low thermal conductivity. This material exhibits promising potential for energy storage systems, offering a novel strategy to enhance thermal performance in PCMs.

Doping with oxygen
and nitrogen in graphite felt (GF) is critical for enhancing the activity of the electrode material in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). In this paper, we present a combined approach that utilizes Fe etching and nitrogen functionalization by means of K 2 FeO 4 and NH 3 to modify the surface structure of graphite fibers. The results show that the innovative approach enhances the disordered structure of the surface carbon of GF and substantially improves the oxygen and nitrogen functionalized groups. This modified GF is completely hydrophilic, and its assembled electrode energy efficiency is 80.08% at a current density of 80 mA∙cm −2 , compared with 69.87% for the pristine GF. The energy efficiency of the modified GF was maintained at 81.8% after 50 charge-discharge cycles. This can be attributed to the reduced internal resistance of these modified GF electrode as well as to the improved mass transport and charge redox exchange towards VO 2+ /VO 2 + redox couple. The combined approach of Fe etching and nitrogen functionalization significantly enhances the electrochemical activity of the GF electrode. This improves the performance of the VRFB.

To efficiently treat hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater, K2FeO4 was used to remove and reduce Cr(VI) in presence of Mn(II) in this paper. Batch removal experiments were carried out to study the effect of Fe/Mn molar ratios, initial pH, in-situ and ex-situ and co-existing ions on Cr(VI) removal. The results showed the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 97.7% for the initial Cr(VI) concentration of 10.0 mg/L at Fe/Mn molar ratio of 2:3 and initial pH 8.0. Meanwhile, the high removal efficiency of Cr(VI) had been maintained throughout the pH range of 3.0–8.0 in the experimental study. Moreover, the removal process was relatively stable regardless of in-situ and ex-situ, and co-existing ions such as Ca2+ and low concentration of HCO3− had no intense effect on Cr(VI) removal, while SO42− inhibited Cr(VI) removal in the reaction system. To investigate the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) by K2FeO4 in presence of Mn(II), the reaction products were characterized by the Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer, X-ray powder diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy and the high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated the ferrate decomposition products of γ-FeOOH/γ-Fe2O3 had the ability to adsorb Cr(VI) and react with Mn(II) to form γ-Fe2O3-Mn(II) complex to adsorb and reduce Cr(VI).

Biomass waste carbon sources enjoy a place of pride because of their low-cost, environmentally friendly, and readily available nature. The development of an efficient approach to transform biomass wastes into functional carbon-based electrode materials is a hot topic. However, the production process of biologically-based activated carbon needs to be further improved. Here, discarded badminton shuttlecock feathers were used as precursor via activation with potassium ferrate (K 2 FeO 4 ) to prepare hierarchical porous carbon. The obtained carbon material with hierarchical pore structure displays a high specific surface area ( S BET ) of 1279.5 m 2 g −1 , large total pore volume ( V total ) of 0.73 cm 3 g −1 ,and high-level hetero-atom doping (N: 3.78 at.%, O: 7.5 at.%, S: 3.85 at.%). Experimental results reveal that the as-prepared FPCB-750–1:3 exhibits an excellent specific capacitance ( C g ) of up to 449 F g −1 at the current density of 0.1 A g −1 . Moreover, even at 10 A g −1 , the FPCB-750–1:3 electrode still presents a high capacitance of 216 F g −1 . In addition, the energy density (ED) of the FPCB-750–1:3//FPCB-750–1:3 symmetric cell reaches 56 Wh kg −1 at a power density (PD) of 720 W kg −1 in an aqueous electrolyte (1 M Na 2 SO 4 ), meanwhile maintaining a high-class long-term electrochemical stability (fading lower than 4% after 10,000 cycles of charging and discharging). This study provides a trustworthy method to produce promising electrode materials from waste biomass for high-performance supercapacitors.

In this study, we investigated the oxidative mechanisms of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) enhanced potassium ferrate (K2FeO4), focusing on tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) as target pollutants. The addition of nZVI enhanced the degradation of both organic tin compounds by K2FeO4, exhibiting pseudo-first-order kinetics influenced by pH, carbonate, and fulvic acid. nZVI, as a reducing agent, facilitated the generation of stronger oxidizing species Fe (V) and Fe (IV) from K2FeO4 through electron transfer. The presence of hydroxyl radicals (OH) was confirmed by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) verification. Intermediate products of TBT degradation by nZVI-enhanced K2FeO4 were identified using GC-MS, confirming de-alkylation leading to stepwise oxidation to inorganic tin ions. Due to excessively long Sn-C bonds in diphenyltin, rendering them unstable, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed. Results indicated that Fe (IV) and Fe (V) predominantly attacked the Sn-C bonds of TPhT, while OH primarily targeted the benzene ring. HOMO energy levels suggested that Fe (V) was more prone to oxidizing TPhT than Fe (IV). Gibbs free energy calculations demonstrated that, in the presence of Fe (IV) and Fe (V), the energy barrier for breaking bonds and oxidizing into inorganic tin ions decreased, favoring the process over the self-decomposition of TPhT. Additionally, the lower energy barrier for OH indicated an easier degradation of TPhT. This study reveals that nZVI-enhanced K2FeO4 effectively removes TBT and TPhT, contributing to the understanding of the ferrate-mediated degradation mechanism of organic tin compounds. The findings offer insights and theoretical guidance for remediating organic tin pollution in aquatic environments.

Magnetic biochar was usually prepared using ferrous and ferric compounds as precursor of magnetic medium. Ferrate , which could be an internal oxidative modifier, was less explored for preparing magnetic biochar. Here, a magnetic biochar was prepared through K 2 FeO 4 -promoted pyrolysis of pomelo peel for adsorption of hexavalent chromium . Oxygen-containing groups and single phase ɤ-Fe 2 O 3 were simultaneously introduced into biochar matrix at 300 °C. The magnetic biochar exhibited 209.64 mg/g maximum adsorption capability at 45 °C, outperformed the best magnetic biochar with 142.86 mg/g maximum adsorption capability at 40 °C in the literature. Moreover, a good magnetism was obtained, facilitating separation of the magnetic biochar from aqueous solution by a magnet. The removal of hexavalent chromium was contributed to the hybrid adsorption of ɤ-Fe 2 O 3 and biochar matrix by reduction, electrostatic interaction and complexation. This method was attractive, required neither extra modifiers nor multiple operations for preparation of highly adsorptive magnetic biochar.

In this study, nanostructured Fe-loaded biochar (Fe-BC) was prepared from rice husk via pyrolysis using K 2 FeO 4 as an activator, and applied for the adsorption of pyridine. The structure of Fe-BC was systematically characterized by BET, SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS. The results revealed a high specific surface area of 434.2183 m 2 /g. The activating role of K 2 FeO 4 not only enabled the abundant loading of Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 on the biochar surface but also increased the oxygen-containing functional groups, thereby providing active sites for pyridine adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe-BC toward Pyridine was 79.796 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well suited to describe the Pyridine adsorption process onto Fe-BC. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that after K 2 FeO 4 modification, the negative Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) indicated a spontaneous adsorption process, while the positive enthalpy change (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) confirmed the endothermic nature of the adsorption and an increase in randomness at the solid-liquid interface. DFT calculations demonstrated a reduction in the energy gap (ΔE) upon the loading of OH, COOH, and Fe. Among all modifications, Fe loading resulted in the most substantial reduction in ΔE, reaching a minimum value of 0.066 eV. This ultimately demonstrates a significant enhancement in the surface reactivity of the Fe-modified biochar. Integrated DFT simulations and experimental characterization elucidated that the adsorption of pyridine by Fe-BC is governed by a combination of mechanisms, including electrostatic interactions, pore filling, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and surface complexation.

In this study, a novel nitrogen-doped magnetic Fe–Ca codoped biochar for phenol removal was successfully fabricated via a hydrothermal and coactivation pyrolysis method. A series of adsorption process parameters (K 2 FeO 4 to CaCO 3 ratio, initial phenol concentration, pH value, adsorption time, adsorbent dosage and ion strength) and adsorption models (kinetic models, isotherms and thermodynamic models) were determined using batch experiments and various analysis techniques (XRD, BET, SEM-EDX, Raman spectroscopy , VSM, FTIR and XPS) to investigate the adsorption mechanism and metal-nitrogen-carbon interaction. The biochar with a ratio of Biochar: K 2 FeO 4 : CaCO 3 = 3:1:1 exhibited superior properties for adsorption of phenol and had a maximum adsorption capacity of 211.73 mg/g at 298 K, C 0 = 200 mg/L, pH = 6.0 and t = 480 min. These excellent adsorption properties were due to superior physicomechanical properties (a large specific surface area (610.53 m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.3950 cm 3 /g), a well-developed pore structure (hierarchical), a high graphitization degree (I D /I G = 2.02), the presence of O/N-rich functional groups and Fe-Ox,Ca-Ox, N-doping, as well as synergistic activation by K 2 FeO 4 and CaCO 3 ). The Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models effectively fit the adsorption data, indicating multilayer physicochemical adsorption. Pore filling and π-π interactions were the predominant mechanisms for phenol removal, and H-bonding interactions, Lewis-acid-base interactions, and metal complexation played an important role in enhancing phenol removal. A simple, feasible approach with application potential to organic contaminant/pollutant removal was developed in this study.

Herein, magnetic porous pinecone-derived hydrochar (MPHC MW ) co-activated by KHCO 3 and K 2 FeO 4 through one-step microwave-assisted pyrolysis was innovatively synthesized for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and anthracene (ANT) removal from water. The analyses of characterization consequences and co-activation mechanisms not merely proved the high specific surface area (703.97 m 2 /g) and remarkable microporous structures of MPHC MW caused by the synergistic chemical activation of KHCO 3 and K 2 FeO 4 , but also testified successful loading of Fe 0 and Fe 3 O 4 on MPHC MW by the process of carbothermal reduction between K 2 FeO 4 and carbon matrix of hydrochar. The resultant MPHC MW possessed pH-dependence for Cr(VI), while adsorption for ANT was hardly impacted by the pH of solution. Moreover, the adsorption processes of MPHC MW could attain equilibrium within 60 min for Cr(VI) and 30 min for ANT with multiple kinetics, and the corresponding adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) and ANT was 128.15 and 60.70 mg/g, respectively. Additionally, the adsorption percentages of MPBC MW for Cr(VI)/ANT was maintained at 87.87/82.64% after three times of adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, pore filling, complexation, electrostatic interaction, reduction and ion exchange were testified to enhance the removal of Cr(VI), while the ANT removal was achieved via π-π stacking, complexation, pore filling and hydrogen bonding force.
