Developing diatomic catalysts (DACs) for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has emerged as a promising leading-edge research area owing to their maximum atomic utility and more sophisticated functionalities. However, the proper design of DACs at an atomic level and an understanding of the synergistic mechanism of binary sites remain challenging. Herein, an N-rich carbon matrix with precisely controlled Ni/Cu dual sites is synthesized through the assistance of metal–organic frameworks. The as-prepared catalyst presents high CO Faradaic efficiency of over 95% from −0.39 to −1.09 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) with the maximum value of 99.2% at −0.79 V vs RHE and long-term durability of 60 h electrolysis. Density functional theory studies reveal that the electronic redistribution and band gap narrowing induced by the adjacent NiN4 and CuN4 moieties enhance the electron conductivity and strengthen the bonding interactions between *COOH intermediates and Ni centers, thus lowering the overall reaction barriers and promoting CO generation.

To enhance the catalytic performance of catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming (ESR) reaction, a facile reverse micelle strategy was adopted to prepare a core@shell Ni–Cu@Ca–SiO2 (Ni–Cu@CS) nanoreactor composed of an ultra-small Ni–Cu alloy (∼2.8 nm) encapsulated in Ca-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles. Benefiting from its core@shell structural features and unique components, the Ni–Cu@CS nanoreactor exhibited superior activity (69.91% H2 selectivity and 99.99% ethanol conversion) and stability compared to reference samples. The regenerated Ni–Cu@CS nanoreactor showed high stability, maintaining 98.14% ethanol conversion and only 1.98 mg gcat−1 h−1 in carbon deposition. The high catalytic performance of Ni–Cu@CS is attributed to not only its encapsulated structure, which effectively prevented the sintering of neighboring Ni–Cu alloy nanoparticles, but also to its Ca-functionalized porous SiO2 shell, suppressing the carbon deposition. Moreover, its porous thin shell facilitated the mass transfer and diffusion of reactants and products. Thus, the Ni–Cu@CS nanoreactor is expected to become a new type of high-efficiency nanoreactor for the ESR reaction.

Ni-Cu/TiN nanocomposites were electrodeposited by incorporation of TiN nanoparticles in Ni-Cu matrix from sulphate-citrate bath with additives. Ultrasonic assistance was performed in an external ultrasonic bath at ultrasonic frequency of 40 KHz and acoustic power of 300 W. The effects of current density on surface morphology, structural and electrochemical properties of Ni-Cu/TiN nanocomposites were examined. Results indicated that the presence of TiN changes the texture of nickel coating. Corrosion resistance of the composite deposit was enhanced by ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition. The average roughness value ( R a ) of Ni-Cu/TiN is 26–34 nm, which is rougher than Ni-Cu alloy ( R a = 4–5 nm). Not only the ultrasonic agitation, but also the current density affects the corrosion properties of the products. Ni-Cu/TiN nanocomposite electrodeposited at 5 A dm −2 has the highest corrosion resistance.

Ni-Cu/H-MWCNTs composite coatings with outstanding corrosion resistance and high wear resistance were prepared by the pulse electrodeposition technology. The micro-surface morphology and corrosion behavior of the coatings were represented by high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy , potential polarization curve, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electrochemical microscope. The chemical composition and crystal structure of the coatings were characterized by energy dispersive spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties are studied by digital microhardness tester and multifunctional material surface testing machine. We found that the successful doping of H-MWCNTs changed the micro-structure and morphology of the Ni-Cu-based coating, making the coating smoother and denser. Furthermore, the average crystallite size of the Ni-Cu/H-MWCNTs (0.5 g/l) composite coating is 13.28 nm. The microhardness and average friction coefficient of the composite coating (0.5 g/l) are 587.04 Hv and 0.178, respectively. It was also found that the composite coating (0.5 g/l) has the best anti-corrosion performance, which is 3.2 times that of the pristine Ni-Cu-based coating. Through SECM diagrams, the composite coating (0.5 g/l) has excellent pitting resistance in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution.

Compared to biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), 5-formyloxymethylfurfural (FMF) is highly potential as feedstock to produce 2, 5-dimethylfuran (DMF) due to its properties of higher stability and enhanced hydrophobicity. Herein, catalytic conversion of FMF to DMF over Ni–Cu bimetallic catalyst with formic acid (FA) as hydrogen donor was investigated. A favorable DMF yield of 71.0% was obtained by catalyst 36Ni-12Cu/SBA-15. The conversion of FMF to DMF was controlled by surface reaction on the catalyst. In addition, catalytic mechanism investigation showed that the excellent catalytic performance and recyclability of catalyst were attributed to the formation of Cu–Ni alloy and its synergistic role. The incorporation of Cu and Ni substantially improved the selectivity of hydrogenolysis toward C–O ester bond. Meanwhile, FMF exhibited a better advantage to substitute HMF for producing DMF over Ni–Cu bimetallic catalyst with formic acid as a hydrogen donor.

The alcoholysis of Kraft lignin was catalyzed by bimetallic Ni-Cu supported on H-Beta, HZSM-5, MAS-7, MCM-41 and SAPO-11 zeolite materials in isopropanol solvent. Results showed that a higher bio-oil yield of 98.80 wt% and monomer yield of 50.83 wt% without obvious char were achieved at 330 °C for 3 h over Ni-Cu/H-Beta catalyst. Isopropanol was found to be more effective in H 2 generation and facilitated to the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. Moreover, the composition of liquid products was also influenced by the acidity and pore structure of catalyst. The superior cycloalkanes yield was produced over Ni-Cu/H-Beta with larger pore size and more acidity. In contrast, a large number of cyclic ketones/alcohols and alkanes were obtained over other zeolites supported catalysts with smaller pore size and less acid content. Besides, the temperature, time and solvent effect on the lignin depolymerization were also researched.

Single-atom catalysts for alkyne semi-hydrogenation have been extensively investigated due to their high metal utilization and improved olefin selectivity. However, their reactivity is hindered by the sluggish activation of reactants on isolated sites. Herein, a non-precise metal catalyst consisting of Ni-Cu hetero-diatomic pairs was prepared using a sequential deposition method. The diatomic sites catalyst exhibited an unprecedented activity among non-precious catalysts with over 98% conversion and 77 mol C2H2 mol metal −1 h −1 at 180 °C, whereas the single-atom catalysts of Cu/C and Ni/C were almost inert under the same conditions. Experimental and theoretical results revealed the crucial diatomic synergy between the Ni-Cu pairs, wherein acetylene was adsorbed on Ni sites and hydrogen was adsorbed on Cu sites, and the diatomic site enabled spontaneous desorption of ethylene. The superior activity of the diatomic catalyst was observed, resulting from the enhanced dominance of d -electrons of Ni near the Fermi level. The research demonstrates an approach to designing non-precise metal catalysts with extraordinary catalytic performance for alkyne hydrogenation.

The surface metallization of zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) particles with Ni–Cu bimetallic coatings is performed by electroless plating assisted with choline chloride–ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG) ionic liquid. The possible reactions and deposition sequences of the plating process have been analyzed based on the micro-morphologies of the Ni–Cu coated ZTA (ZTA@Ni–Cu) particles obtained at different reaction stages. The roles of ChCl-EG additive, reaction temperature, and ZTA concentration on the surface morphology, coating thickness, and element content of the ZTA@Ni–Cu particles are also investigated. Results show that uniform cauliflower-characteristic Ni–Cu coatings are formed on ZTA surfaces with 35 g·L−1 ChCl-EG at 65°C. The coating thickness is about 26.9 μm, and the element contents of Cu and Ni are 38.1 at% and 61.9 at%, respectively. Besides, a schematic illustration about the fabrication of ZTA@Ni–Cu particles is proposed to elaborate the formation process of Ni–Cu coatings and the function mechanism of ChCl-EG additive.

The selective hydrogenation of nitrile compounds represents a pivotal area of research within both industrial and academic catalysis. In this study, we prepared Ni-Cu bimetallic catalysts through a co-deposition-crystallization sequence, aimed at the efficient production of primary and secondary amines. The enhanced selectivity for primary amines is attributed to the downshift of the d-band center of Ni 0.1 Cu, which weakens the adsorption of key imine intermediates. Consequently, the synthesized Ni-Cu catalysts demonstrated exceptional catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of nitrile compounds, including those with reduction-sensitive functional groups such as −Cl and −Br, achieving 100 % conversion efficiency and significant yields ranging from 80 % to 99 %. The reaction conditions were comprehensively optimized, taking into account factors such as temperature, solvent, time, additives, and hydrogen pressure. Furthermore, the catalytic performance of Ni 0.1 Cu and Ni 0.4 Cu in the selective hydrogenation of nitriles was sustained over at least five reaction cycles. Temperature-programmed desorption results elucidated the structure–activity relationship, revealing that a strong interaction site prevails in Ni 0.4 Cu, while a weaker or moderate interaction site in Ni 0.1 Cu is responsible for the formation of primary amines. Theoretical calculations indicate that the reaction proceeds via an imine mechanism, with benzylideneimine serving as a key intermediate. This work may stimulate further research into the development of bimetallic nano-catalysts for selective nitrile hydrogenation in industrial catalytic processes.

N,N-Dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine (DMAPA) is an important aliphatic diamine widely used in fine chemical manufacturing. Its industrial production traditionally relies on Raney nickel catalysts, which suffer from pyrophoric hazards and limited selectivity due to imine condensation side reactions. To address these challenges, we report an Al2O3-supported Ni-Cu alloy catalyst as an efficient alternative for the selective hydrogenation of N,N-dimethylaminopropionitrile (DMAPN). The optimized Ni30Cu5/Al2O3catalyst achieves complete DMAPN conversion and over 90% DMAPA selectivity under industrially relevant conditions (120 °C, 2.5 MPa H2). X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy analyses confirm the formation of substitutional Ni-Cu alloy nanoparticles, where Cu incorporation induces both geometric isolation of Ni ensembles and electronic modulation of surface active sites, thereby suppressing condensation-derived by-products. In addition, an NH3/ethanol-assisted process further improves selectivity while reducing autogenous operating pressure. Overall, this work demonstrates a safe and highly selective catalytic system for primary diamine synthesis, providing a practical alternative to conventional Raney Ni-based processes.

Selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene is the most effective way to remove a small amount of phenylacetylene from styrene, but it is still a challenge to develop catalysts with high activity and selectivity. Herein, a series of non-precious bimetallic Ni 3 M/SiO 2 (M = Zn, Sn, Cd, Fe, Co, Cu, or Mo) and trimetallic Ni 3 Cu–Sn/SiO 2 catalysts were prepared and applied to selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene. A trade-off between activity and selectivity was observed on Ni 3 M/SiO 2 , where Ni 3 Cu/SiO 2 showed the best hydrogenation activity because of the hydrogen spillover effect of the Ni–Cu alloy, while Ni 3 Sn/SiO 2 exhibited the highest selectivity to styrene due to the active-site isolation effect of the Ni–Sn alloy. Impressively, trimetallic Ni 3 Cu–Sn/SiO 2 offered superior catalytic performance (94 % styrene selectivity at >99 % phenylacetylene conversion) as compared to bimetallic catalysts, owing to the synergistic effect among Ni, Cu, and Sn. In the case of Cu and Sn co-doping, the hydrogen spillover on the Ni–Cu alloy was deeply suppressed by Sn, which enabled an effective modification of the geometric and electronic structures of Ni to favor styrene desorption. The hydrogenation activity of Ni 3 CuSn 0.3 /SiO 2 can be readily enhanced by increasing the metal loading and further improved by elevating the reaction temperature and pressure, but meanwhile the high selectivity is little affected. This work demonstrates a multi-metal synergistic strategy to break the activity–selectivity trade-off of Ni-based bimetallic catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of alkynes.

Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating was pulse electrodeposited by incorporation of Cu, TiN and ZrO2 simultaneously in Ni deposits from a citrate bath in the presence of additives. The surface morphology, structural and electrochemical properties of Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating were evaluated. Results illustrated that the nanocomposite coating exhibits nodular-like structure with aggregated granules dispersed on its surface. The anti-corrosion performance of Ni-Cu deposits could be reinforced much by incorporation of TiN-ZrO2 nanoparticles. The surface of the coating contains Ni, Cu, Ti, Zr, O and C elements and indicates the formation of the oxide layer. The corrosion resistance of the nanocomposite coating is not only dependent on the current density and duty cycle, but also their combination. The Ni-Cu/TiN-ZrO2 nanocomposite coating electrodeposited at duty cycle of 70% and current density of 4 A dm−2 has the highest anti-corrosion performance. In comparison with duty cycle and current density, the effect of frequency on corrosion resistance is not much.
