Ni3S2@NiMo-LDH Composite for Flexible Hybrid Capacitors

Qi He,Xiang Wu

Ni3S2is a kind of transition metal sulfide (TMD) with excellent electrical conductivity and electrochemical activity. To further enhance the specific capacity of Ni3S2-based supercapacitors, we synthesize several nanosheet-decorated Ni3S2@NiMo-LDH nanostructures by a combination of hydrothermal and electrodeposition processes. The mesoporous structure provides a large number of electroactive sites, which shortens the charge transfer distance and increases the specific surface area of electrode materials. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor shows an energy density of 62.8 W h kg−1at 2701.6 W kg−1and long-term cycling stability.

Catalytic hydropyrolysis of lignin using NiMo-doped catalysts: Catalyst evaluation and mechanism analysis

Tan Li,Jing Su,Huiyuan Wang,Cong Wang,Wen Xie,Kaige Wang

NiMo-doped catalysts were investigated for the conversion of lignin to drop-in fuel through catalytic hydropyrolysis. The influence of NiMo-doped catalysts with different carriers and Ni/Mo molar ratios on the hydropyrolysis product distribution were studied using both lignin and lignin model compounds. Two coefficients were proposed to qualitatively evaluate the catalytic performance of NiMo-doped catalysts. Low yield of methane (13.04c%) and high yield of condensable hydrocarbons products (25.82c%) with low selectivity of polyaromatics (4.37%) were obtained at 1.0 MPa H 2 and 400 °C catalytic temperature during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis over Ni 1 Mo/ZrO 2 . The hydrodeoxygenation activity of Ni x Mo/ZrO 2 depends on Ni 0 , Mo 4+ , and Mo 3+ . The synergistic effect of Ni and Mo promotes the removal of the phenolic methoxy group. The increase in hydrogen pressure tends to make hydrogen to be consumed through hydrocracking and hydrogenation reactions. The influence of Ni 1 Mo/ZrO 2 on evolution of lignin hydropyrolysis volatiles was revealed. Ni shows strong activity in the removal of phenolic hydroxyl groups and benzene ring hydrogenation, while Mo tends to remove phenolic methoxy groups.

Yttrium-doped NiMo-MoO2 heterostructure electrocatalysts for hydrogen production from alkaline seawater

Liu Shujie,Zhang Zhiguo,Dastafkan Kamran,Shen Yan,Zhao Chuan,Wang Mingkui

Active and stable electrocatalysts are essential for hydrogen production from alkaline water electrolysis. However, precisely controlling the interaction between electrocatalysts and reaction intermediates (H 2 O*, H*, and *OH) remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate an yttrium-doped NiMo-MoO 2 heterogenous electrocatalyst that efficiently promotes water dissociation and accelerates the intermediate adsorption/desorption dynamics in alkaline electrolytes. Introducing yttrium into the NiMo/MoO 2 heterostructure induces lattice expansion and optimizes the d -band center of NiMo alloy component, enhancing water dissociation and H* desorption. Yttrium doping also increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies in MoO 2−x , which in turn accelerates the charge kinetics and the swift evacuation of *OH intermediates from the active sites. Consequently, the Y-NiMo/MoO 2−x heterostructure exhibits notable performance by requiring only 189 and 220 mV overpotentials to achieve current density of 2.0 A cm −2 in alkaline water and seawater, respectively. This work provides a strategy to modulate heterostructure catalysts for scalable, economically viable hydrogen production from low-quality waters.

PVP-assisted synthesis of unsupported NiMo catalysts with enhanced hydrodesulfurization activity

Huan Liu,Quanzhen Liu,Jianzhong Zhang,Changlong Yin,Yuxin Zhao,Shumeng Yin,Chenguang Liu,Wanfu Sun

The effect of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of unsupported NiMo catalysts was studied. The NiMo catalyst precursors were synthesized by a PVP-assisted chemical precipitation method, by adding various contents of PVP to a Ni- and Mo-containing solution. A series of techniques, including CHSN analysis, XRF , XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, SEM, TG-DSC, TPR, and XPS, were used to characterize the NiMo oxide precursors and sulfided catalysts, and the catalytic activities were tested in the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The characterization results revealed that PVP was efficiently removed due to low contents in the synthesis and high solubility in water. The pore properties and hysteresis loop , the agglomeration of the nanoparticles , and the reducibility of the NiMo precursor were affected by the introduction of PVP, while the phases of the precursors and the thermal stabilities were little changed. Ni 3 S 2 and MoS 2 phases were observed in the sulfided catalysts. The catalysis results revealed that the hydrogenation pathway was predominant in the HDS of DBT. A NiMo catalyst synthesized with 0.5   g PVP showed a higher conversion of DBT than the other NiMo catalysts, possibly due to efficient formation of the ‘NiMoS’ active phase. This facile, scalable, and cost-effective route to prepare unsupported NiMo catalyst with enhanced HDS activities would be attractive in industrial applications.

Catalytic Conversion of Lignin to Liquid Fuels with an Improved H/Ceff Value over Bimetallic NiMo-MOF-Derived Catalysts

Changzhou Chen,Peng Liu,Haihong Xia,Jianchun Jiang,Xiaohui Yang,Minghao Zhou

Lignin is an abundant source of aromatics with low effective hydrogen-to-carbon ratio (H/Ceff), and the depolymerization of lignin provides significant potential for producing liquid products with an improved H/Ceff value. In this work, the catalytic conversion of lignin monomers, dimer, trimers, and realistic lignin over spherical MOF-derived NiMo@C catalysts was well established, to get liquid fuels with a higher H/Ceff. The optimal ratio of the Ni4Mo1@C catalyst exhibited good hydrodeoxygenation activity and stability for the hydrotreatment of lignin model compounds and lignin. The addition of Mo facilitated the decrease of the particle size of a spherical structure, strengthened the electron-transfer capability between metals Mo and Ni, and enhanced the acid strength. All of these factors contributed to higher hydrodeoxygenation activity in the hydrotreatment process. Up to 100% conversion and 90% yields of ethylcyclohexane and cyclohexanol with H/Ceff values of 2.0 and 1.667, respectively, were obtained. The Ni4Mo1@C catalyst achieved a decrease of the oxygen element and an increase of H/Ceff and HHV values. The physicochemical characterizations were performed by various means including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), pyridine-infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer (ICP), and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, which definitely elucidated the formation of a synergistic effect between metals Mo and Ni. Additionally, a control experiment also illustrated the synergistic effect that facilitated the occurrence of the hydrotreatment process under lower temperatures after the addition of metal Mo. Based on the optimal reaction condition (240 °C, 4 h, 2.0 MPa H2), both lignin and its monomers/dimers/trimers could be effectively hydrotreated to afford liquid products with improved H/Ceff value compared to raw lignin.

A 3D binder-free AgNWs@NiMo/PU electrode for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Ya Liu,Wenzhu Tang,Gaowei Zhang,Wenhao Chen,Qingze Chen,Chunlin Xiao,Shenghui Xie,Yejun Qiu

Developing stable and efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is of great significance for the production of clean hydrogen energy from water splitting. In this work, 3D AgNWs@NiMo/PU electrode was obtained by electrodepositing NiMo alloy onto three-dimensional silver nanowires conductive substrate (3D AgNWs/PU) which was uniformly assembled on the surface of the skeleton of a polyurethane sponge (PU). 3D AgNWs/PU provides good electrolyte permeability, rich active site attachment points, good electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic synergy, which greatly improves the catalytic activity. In addition, 3D AgNWs@NiMo/PU electrode does not need to use adhesive in the process of hydrogen evolution, which can improve the hydrogen evolution performance and stability of the electrode. Specifically, the optimized electrode (AgNWs@NiMo/PU-1200 s) exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution performance by achieving a low overpotential of 32 mV (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 72 mV dec -1 (in 1 M KOH). More interestingly, it also has good stability after 10 h of stability test. Therefore, this study provides a feasible way to develop stable and efficient 3D HER electrocatalysts.

Vertical Graphene-Supported NiMo Nanoparticles as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction under Alkaline Conditions

Hongbin Wang,Beirong Ye,Chen Li,Tao Tang,Sipu Li,Shaojun Shi,Chunyang Wu,Yongqi Zhang

Water electrolysis as an important and facile strategy to generate hydrogen has attracted great attention, and efficient electrocatalysts play a key role in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, vertical graphene (VG)-supported ultrafine NiMo alloy nanoparticles (NiMo@VG@CC) were fabricated successfully via electro-depositing as efficient self-supported electrocatalysts for HER. The introduction of metal Mo optimized the catalytic activity of transition metal Ni. In addition, VG arrays as the three-dimensional (3D) conductive scaffold not only ensured high electron conductivity and robust structural stability, but also endowed the self-supported electrode large specific surface area and exposed more active sites. With the synergistic effect between NiMo alloys and VG, the optimized NiMo@VG@CC electrode exhibited a low overpotential of 70.95 mV at 10 mA cm−2and a remarkable stable performance over 24 h. This research is anticipated to offer a powerful strategy for the fabrication of high-performance hydrogen evolution catalysts. Keywords:vertical graphene;NiMo alloy;high surface area;hydrogen evolution reaction;electrodeposition

Anatase-Type TiO2-Modified Amorphous NiMo Nanoparticles with Superior Catalytic Performance toward Dehydrogenation of Hydrous Hydrazine

Xiaoya Liu,Ying Liu,Jingchao Wang,Jinghuan Ma

A safe, efficient, and responsive online hydrogen source is critical for the commercial application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Catalysts play an important role in accelerating the development of hydrous hydrazine as a promising online hydrogen source, and the development of hydrous hydrazine (N2H4·H2O) as a promising online hydrogen source for PEMFCs requires superior catalysts with low cost and high activity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a supported amorphous catalyst NiMo/TiO2 using a combination of impregnation and coreduction methods. The NiMo/TiO2 catalyst can be responsive and completely decompose hydrous hydrazine to produce hydrogen in 1.5 min with a H2 selectivity of 100% and a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 484 h–1 under alkaline conditions at 343 K, outperforming most non-noble metal catalysts. Moreover, H2 selectivity has no decline after 10 cycles. The excellent catalytic properties can be attributed to the strong synergistic interaction between the support TiO2 and NiMo nanoparticles, as well as the amorphous NiMo nanoparticles possessing a high concentration of coordinated unsaturated sites. In addition, the doping of Mo leads to the modification of the electronic and geometric structures of the NiMo/TiO2 surface, which results in an easier cleavage of the N–H bond and desorption of reaction intermediates.

Highly selective and efficient hydrogenation of fatty acids to alcohols using NiMo@C catalyst

Shiyu Wu,Feng Long,Xincheng Cao,Peng Liu,Yanju Lu,Junming Xu

Selective hydrodeoxygenation is the central challenge in converting bio-derived fatty acids into fatty alcohols under mild conditions. Herein, an effective and highly selective carbon-supported NiMo catalyst (NiMo@C) was developed by the thermolysis Ni-based metal–organic frameworks (MOF) impregnated Mo species. At a low temperature of 160 °C, the stearic acid can be efficiently converted into corresponding stearic alcohols over the NiMo@C with about 97% selectivity at 100% reactant conversion, which is superior to the most reported catalysts containing noble catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of NiMo@C catalyst was mainly attributed to the ordered arrangement of Ni in the MOF and the uniform loading of molybdenum salt, which leads to an ideal distribution of Ni and Mo after pyrolysis of the MOF. The carbon support also prevents the aggregation of metal particles, which promotes the dissociation of hydrogen and enhances the synergy between Ni and Mo sites. More importantly, the synthesized NiMo@C catalyst showed excellent reusability with no loss of activity after 15 consecutive runs due to the stability of the catalyst structure. This provides a useful and simple method for synthesizing highly efficiency and stable NiMo@C bimetallic catalysts, which can facilely and selectively hydrogenate the bio-derived fatty acids to corresponding alcohols under mild conditions.

Bimodal mesoporous AlMCM-41 supported NiMo catalysts for efficient hydrodesulfurization of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene

Hao Zhang,Qing Zhang,Guang-Ren Qian,Hong Liu,Yang Yue

In this research, a bimodal mesoporous AlMCM-41 (B-AM41) material was prepared and applied to support NiMo catalysts for the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene. Additionally, catalysts supported on smaller and larger single-pore AlMCM-41 (S-AM41 and L-AM41) were also prepared as reference catalysts. Detailed characterizations show that the proportion, stacking degree, and length of the MoS 2 active phase on the different catalysts are distinct. As a result, HDS evaluation indicates that the NiMo/B-AM41 catalyst exhibited better catalytic activity with a reaction rate constant of 10.4 × 10 −8 mol g −1 s −1 and a turnover frequency of 7.0 × 10 −4 s −1 , significantly surpassing the S-AM41 and L-AM41 supported catalysts. The superior activity of the NiMo/B-AM41 catalyst can be attributed to a high sulfidation degree that provides sufficient highly dispersed type Ⅱ MoS 2 phases with minimal stacking and moderate slab length. Moreover, the bimodal mesoporous structure promotes the diffusion of 4,6-DMDBT and benefits its contact with active sites.

Resurrection of the spent NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst for diesel hydrofining

Xiaotong Meng,Yuchao Lyu,Junhao Liu,Wenshuo Ma,Yupeng Tian,Jianye Fu,Xinmei Liu

Spent catalysts from the hydrofining process are hazardous wastes, while their appropriate utilization can also bring enormous environmental and economic benefits. Herein, a chemical resurrection method was developed to resurrect and recycle the industrial spent NiMo/Al 2 O 3 hydrofining catalyst. The spent catalysts are calcined to remove the carbon deposit followed by the treatment with citric acid (CA) and ethylene glycol (EG). The results show that the calcination can also accelerate the aggregation and inerting of the active phase. However, the redispersion and reactivation of the inactive phases over the spent catalysts are realized through formation of metal complex with the citric acid, which weaken the interaction between Mo species and support. It increases reducibility of the Mo species and then improve the sulfurization degree of the resurrected catalyst. Besides, the average length of MoS 2 is reduced while the stacking number is increased. The ethylene glycol further regulates the reducibility of Ni and Mo species to promote the formation of NiMoS phase with high activity instead of Ni 3 S 2 . Consequently, the average length of the MoS 2 is reduced while the average stacking number of MoS 2 and content of the NiMoS phase are increased over the resurrected catalyst compared with the spent catalyst. It recovers the hydrodesulfurization activity of the resurrected catalyst to a level higher than that over the spent and industrially regenerated catalyst.

NiMo/CoP nanoflower electrodes with abundant heterogeneous interfaces as efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline water splitting

Li Luo,Hanyu Li,Shantang Liu

The development of high-performance, excellent stability, and cost-effective non-precious metal catalysts is essential for large-scale electrochemical water splitting. In this study, we designed and constructed novel NiMo X /CoP heterostructures with nanoflower morphology through hydrothermal, phosphorization, and magnetron sputtering processes, serving as efficient hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) catalysts. Electrochemical tests indicate the optimal sample NiMo 450 /CoP exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance in an alkaline electrolyte, with overpotentials of only 30 and 215 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. Notably, the NiMo 450 /CoP delivers outstanding long-term stability, maintaining 94 % of its initial performance over 60 h at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, NiMo 450 /CoP also demonstrated the lowest OER overpotential (216 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), and the assembled two-electrode electrolyzer operated efficiently with a low cell voltage of 1.54 V. The excellent catalytic performance and stability may be attributed to the synergistic effect of NiMo alloy and the layered heterostructure of NiMo X /CoP. This research outlines a method for preparing high-activity non-precious metal catalysts, which has the potential to promote industrial water splitting applications.
