Solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor of luminol based on polymer donor PM6 and ZIF-8 for sensitive detection of sunset yellow in sports drinks

Yanjia Guo,Juan Lu,Jing Wang,Yujia Song,Ruidan Li,Li Tian

PM6 is a polymer donor characterized by a wide bandgap, commonly utilized in high-performance polymer solar cells. In this study, we applied PM6 to the field of electrochemiluminescence for the first time. By sequentially modifying PM6, CS@luminol and ZIF-8 on the electrode, we constructed a simple yet novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the detection of the colorant sunset yellow (SY). As a donor, PM6 enhanced the charge transfer rate within the system and improved its luminescence performance. CS served to stabilize the luminescent reagent due to its viscosity. ZIF-8 acted as an accelerator in the luminol luminescence system, facilitating the absorption of more active oxygen and generating additional reactive species on the electrode surface. The combined action of PM6 and ZIF-8 resulted in a luminol ECL sensor that exhibited a sensitive and stable signal. When exposed to sunset yellow, the ECL signal diminished consistently with increasing concentrations of SY. Under optimal conditions, the ECL attenuation signal demonstrated a linear relationship with the logarithm of SY concentration, with a linear range of 5.0 × 10 − 13 –5.0 × 10 − 8  mol L -1 , and a detection limit of 1.67 × 10 −13  mol L -1 (S/N = 3). The constructed sensor exhibited excellent stability, selectivity, and repeatability, making it suitable for the actual detection of sunset yellow in sports drinks.

Photoelectric Conversion and Device Stability of PM6:PY-IT Solar Cells Based on a Water Solution-Processed MoO3 Hole Transport Layer

Rong Hu,Zijie Xiao,Yurong Liu,Yongyao Su,Chaozhong Guo,Zhe Chen,Cuihong Liu,Wei Zhang

To enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), a new precursor solution based on an in situ chemical reaction of nanomolybdenum powder (Mo), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and ammonia (NH3·H2O) was developed for preparing a MoO3 hole transport layer (HTL) for all-PSCs. The results showed that the PCE and stability of PM6:PY-IT solar cells based on the MoO3 HTL were better than those based on a PEDOT:PSS layer. To further understand the relationship between the HTL and the device performance, ultrafast photophysical processes of all-PSCs based on different HTLs were contrastively analyzed. Our research indicated that the micromorphology of active layers could be influenced by the interfacial layer material, consequently determining the photoelectric conversion process of all-PSCs. The MoO3-based all-PSCs had longer charge lifetime, higher charge mobility, and lower charge recombination characteristics compared with the devices based on the PEDOT:PSS layer during the operation time. As a result, the MoO3-based PM6:PY-IT solar cells achieved an initial PCE of 15.2%, and they still maintained more than 80% of their initial efficiency after 1000 h.

Modulating Aggregation Behavior and Optimizing Morphology of PM6:Y6-Based Ternary Organic Solar Cells by Introducing a Noncoplanar Indacenodithiophene-Based Small-Molecule Guest

Xuejiao Tang,Xiujie Peng,Haitao Liao,Xiaoying Zeng,Xiaoying Zhang,Yu Zhu,Chao Weng,Ping Shen

The rational development of the third component is the key to obtaining highly efficient ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). In this contribution, one tetracyanobutadiene-functionalized small molecule, IDT-T-PCN, featuring a noncoplanar molecular backbone, is selected and employed as a third component to construct PM6:Y6:IDT-T-PCN ternary OSCs. Results demonstrate that IDT-T-PCN exhibits complementary absorption and cascade energy-level alignment with the host materials (PM6 and Y6), which are beneficial for improving light-capture capability and charge transfer properties. Absorption spectra and contact angle measurements reveal that there is good compatibility and strong interaction between IDT-T-PCN and Y6, which can affect the crystallization and molecular aggregation of the host materials, especially Y6. The morphology, structure, and formation kinetics characterizations of the active layer film have unveiled that IDT-T-PCN plays a critical role in optimizing phase separation and morphology, modulating molecular aggregation, and enhancing crystallization and orderly molecular stacking of the ternary blend. Therefore, the ternary OSCs exhibit improved charge dissociation and collection probability, enhanced charge transport, and reduced charge recombination, leading to improvements in all photovoltaic parameters. Specially, the ternary OSCs incorporated with IDT-T-PCN achieve a decent PCE of 17.36%, which is obviously higher than that of the host PM6:Y6 binary device (PCE = 15.84%) owing to the simultaneous increase of VOC, JSC, and FF. This work highlights the role of careful material selection and design of the third component with the aim of optimizing device physics processes, crystallinity, and morphology of the blend film, ultimately realizing high-performance ternary OSCs.

Polymer donor PM6 assisted solid-state electrochemiluminescence sensor of copper-doped biomass carbon quantum dots for ultrasensitive detection of rhodamine B in chili powder

Yanjia Guo,Juan Lu,Wenzhuo Wang,Hanyue Jiang,Guangping Ma,Pengfei Han,Li Tian,Tengying Ma

In this study, we developed novel copper-doped biomass carbon quantum dots (Cu-CQDs) utilizing cantaloupe peel and copper nitrate as precursors. Compared to undoped biomass carbon quantum dots (CQDs), the Cu-CQDs demonstrated a stronger electrochemiluminescent (ECL) signal when reacting with K 2 S 2 O 8 . By employing the synthesized Cu-CQDs as a luminescent reagent, we collaborated with the polymer donor PM6 to construct an innovative solid-state ECL sensor for the trace detection of Rhodamine B (RhB). The solid-state ECL sensor was developed using a layer-by-layer modification approach, sequentially modifying the electrode surface with the polymer donor PM6, Cu-CQDs, and chitosan (CS). The layered structure of the polymer donor PM6 serves as a carrier for Cu-CQDs, enhancing their effective concentration on the electrode surface. Additionally, its electron-donating properties facilitate electron transfer within the sensor system. Chitosan (CS), characterized by its viscosity, was modified as the outermost layer, further enhancing the stability and ECL intensity of the sensor. RhB exhibited a significant quenching effect on the ECL signal of the constructed sensor, with the quenching value being proportional to the logarithm of RhB concentration in the range of 5.0 × 10 −8 to 5.0 × 10 −13  M. This sensor was successfully applied to the detection of RhB in chili samples, providing an effective platform for food safety monitoring.

Efficient photodegradation of carbamazepine by organocatalysts incorporating a third component with a more complementary absorption spectrum

Min Long,Ciyuan Huang,Xiao Huang,Linji Yang,Liangsheng Chen,Ke Sun,Caiyun Wang,Liying Zhang,Libin Zhang,Songlin Cai,Shangfei Yao,Hongxiang Zhu,Tao Yang,Bingsuo Zou,Tao Liu

Carbamazepine, recognized as one of the most prevalent pharmaceuticals, has attracted considerable attention due to its potential impact on ecosystems and human health. In response, this work synthesized and characterized a novel environmentally friendly and cost-effective organic semiconductor photocatalyst PM6:Y6:ITCPTC loaded with coconut shell charcoal, and then investigated its performance for photocatalytic removal. Remarkably, carbamazepine demonstrated a photodegradation efficiency exceeding 99% within a mere 20 minutes of exposure to one sunlight intensity, and also showed good effectiveness under a low light intensity of 50 W. The catalyst exhibited exceptional reusability and stability, maintaining degradation efficiency between 95–99% over 25 cycles. The high photocatalytic activity of PM6:Y6:ITCPTC is primarily attributed to the incorporation of the third component (named ITCPTC), which enhances exciton dissociation and carrier transfer, generating superoxide radicals, electrons, and holes. Furthermore, the plausible degradation pathway of carbamazepine was proposed based on the measured intermediates and density functional theory calculations.

Morphology optimization and charge characteristics in PM6-based solar cells via ternary solvent processing

Hu Rong,Liu Zixiong,Zhang Jie,Tian Liangliang,Wang Gang,Chen Jinwei,He Kailin,Wang Ruilin

In this contribution, an optimized ternary solvent (chlorobenzene:chloroform:1,8-diiodooctane, CB:CF:DIO) was used to fabricate the high-efficiency polymer solar cells (PSCs). To analyze the effect of ternary solvent on the performance of PSCs, the relation among the morphology of active layer, charge generation-recombination and device performance of PM6:IT-4F solar cells was studied. The results showed that the morphology (i.e., aggregation state of donor and acceptor, phase separation degree) of active layer could be optimized at the ratio of 0.8:0.2 (CB:CF). Besides, we found that charge generation, charge transfer and charge mobility were improved in the CB:CF (0.8:0.2) processed PM6:IT-4F solar cells, thereby the charge recombination process in this device could be reduced compared with other CB:CF ratios processed devices. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 12.85% was obtained in the CB:CF (0.8:0.2) processed PM6:IT-4F device.

A Universal Dopant-Free Polymeric Hole-Transporting Material for Efficient and Stable All-Inorganic and Organic–Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Xiaohui Liu,Sheng Fu,Wenxiao Zhang,Zuxiong Xu,Xiaodong Li,Junfeng Fang,Yuejin Zhu

Hole-transporting materials (HTMs) with desired properties play a crucial role in achieving efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, most high-performance devices generally employ HTMs that require additional complicated doping treatments, which are harmful to the device stability. In this work, a fluorine-substituted polymer electron-donor material, PM6, is developed as a dopant-free HTM in regular all-inorganic CsPbI2Br PSCs. Benefiting from the matched energy-level alignment, high hole mobility, and effective defect passivation, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.06% with an ultrahigh fill factor of 82.54% is achieved for the PM6-based PSCs. Compared to doped Spiro-OMeTAD (PCE of 14.46%), PM6 significantly enhances the PCE of CsPbI2Br PSCs with negligible hysteresis owing to its more efficient charge transportation, suppressed recombination, and strong trap passivation effect. Moreover, remarkable improvements in long-term stability, thermal stability, and operational stability are all gained for the PM6-based PSCs. In addition, the successful application of PM6 as a dopant-free HTM in organic–inorganic hybrid PSCs enables an impressive PCE of 20.05% with superb device stability, manifesting the generality of the polymer donor material in various PSC systems.

Broadband High-Gain Phototransistors Enabled by Interfacial Charge Transfer in ZTO/PM6:Y6 Composite Channels

Jia Li,Yujie Yang,Shuqin Xiong,Jiayang Jiang,Yali Yu,Feng Teng,Yufeng Hu

Interfacial charge transfer in composite semiconductor channels provides a powerful and physically transparent route to achieving broadband and high-gain phototransistors, yet remains insufficiently explored in indium-free oxide–organic systems. Here, we report a broadband-responsive hybrid phototransistor based on an all-solution-processed composite channel composed of zinc–tin oxide (ZTO) and an organic bulk heterojunction PM6:Y6. In this architecture, amorphous ZTO serves primarily as a high-mobility, low-noise electron transport channel with excellent gate controllability, while the PM6:Y6 bulk heterojunction supplies strong and broadband optical absorption, enabling efficient photocarrier generation from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region. Efficient interfacial charge transfer at the oxide/organic interface allows photogenerated electrons in the PM6:Y6 layer to be injected into the ZTO channel, where they are rapidly transported and amplified by the field-effect conduction pathway. Systematic optoelectronic characterizations reveal that the resulting high gain originates from interfacial carrier separation and accumulation at the composite channel, rather than from direct charge transport within the organic layer alone. As a result, the device exhibits pronounced photocurrent enhancement across the ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared spectral range, with a photosensitivity exceeding 5 orders of magnitude, a maximum responsivity of 9.13 × 103 A/W, and a specific detectivity on the order of 1015 Jones. By replacing indium-containing oxides with solution-processed ZTO, this work demonstrates that broadband high-gain photodetection can be realized without relying on indium-specific electronic properties. These results establish interfacial charge transfer as a general and scalable physical mechanism for designing indium-free, broadband, and high-performance oxide-based phototransistors.

18.18 % Efficiency of organic solar cells based on PM6:Y6 with Syringic acid modified ZnO

Qiao Zheng,Zhaohuang Guo,Jinyong Zhuang,Ziqi Zhou,Jionghua Wu,Hui Deng,Caixia Zhang,Weihuang Wang,Shuying Cheng

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as an electron transport layer (ETL) in inverted organic solar cells (IOSCs) owing to its excellent performance, such as good light transmission and high conductivity, while its surface defects and photocatalytic properties limit the development of IOSCs. Herein, we apply an antioxidant, syringic acid (SA), to modify the surface of ZnO film, which observably improve the efficiency and stability of IOSCs. It is found that SA can effectively passivate the surface defects of ZnO and optimize surface morphology, as well as reduce the work function (W F ) of ZnO resulting in an improvement of the charge transport of IOSCs. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:Y6-based IOSCs is increased from 16.19 % to 18.18 %, it is the highest PCE values of the single-junction IOSCs based on PM6:Y6 system as reported. Meanwhile, the photostability of the device is markedly improved due to SA could suppress the photocatalytic of ZnO under the ultraviolet aging.

New breakthrough in rapid degradation of lignin derivative compounds · A novel high stable and reusable green organic photocatalyst

Yinna Liang,Libin Zhang,Ciyuan Huang,Jianhua Xiong,Tao Liu,Shangfei Yao,Hongxiang Zhu,Qifeng Yang,Bingsuo Zou,Shuangfei Wang

The pulp and paper sectors are thriving yet pose significant environmental threats to water bodies, mainly due to the substantial release of pollutants. Lignin-derived compounds are among the most problematic of these contaminants. To address this issue, we present our initial results on utilizing organic semiconductor photocatalysis under visible light for treating lignin-derived compounds. Our investigation has been centered around creating a green and cost-effective organic semiconductor photocatalyst. This catalyst is designed using a structure of bagasse cellulose spheres to support PM6 (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2- b :4,5- b’ ]dithiophene))– co -(1,3-di(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1,2- c :4,5- c’ ]dithiophene-4,8-dione))]: MeIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-cyclopentane-1,3-dione[ c ]-1-methyl-thiophe))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3- d:2′ , 3′-d’ ]-s-indaceno[1,2- b :5,6- b’ ]-dithiophene)). This photocatalyst demonstrates remarkable efficiency, achieving over 91 % degradation of lignin-derived compounds. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to three main factors: (1) The ability of PM6 to broaden MeIC's absorption range from 300 to 800 nm, allowing for effective utilization of visible light; (2) the synergistic interaction between PM6 and MeIC, which ensures compatible energy levels and a vast, evenly spread surface area, promoting charge mobility and extensive donor/acceptor interfaces. This synergy significantly enhances the generation and transport of carriers, resulting in a high production of free radicals that accelerate the decomposition of organic materials; (3) The deployment of PM6:MeIC on biomass-based carriers increases the interaction surface with the organic substances. Notably, PM6: MeIC showcases outstanding durability, with its degradation efficiency remaining between 84 % and 91 % across 100 cycles. This study presents a promising approach for designing advanced photocatalysts aimed at degrading common pollutants in papermaking wastewater.

Efficiency Enhancement and Transparency Adaption of Bladed PM6:Y6 Solar Cells Doped with Binary Lanthanide (Eu3+/Sm3+)-Induced Polymeric Nanoaggregates

Shuxin Li,Wenfei Shen,Hao Fu,Yao Wang,Jun Li,Zhonglin Du,Matt J. Kipper,Christopher D. Snow,Laurence A. Belfiore,Soo Wohn Lee,Jianguo Tang

The emergence of convenient blading technology has enabled the development of large-area polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, the smart, efficient enhancement and transparency adaption of bladed PM6:Y6 solar cells requires demonstration of key performance indicators. Herein, we report the enhanced efficiency and adapted transparency of PSCs by binary lanthanide (Eu3+/Sm3+)-induced diblock polymer aggregates (EIPAs/SIPAs) with inclusion of ZnO (ZnO:EIPAs:SIPAs). First, the EIPA- and SIPA-cocapsulated ZnO nanoclusters (ESPAs-Z) were employed as the electron-transport layer (ETL). Owing to their distinct excitation and emission spectra, EIPAs and SIPAs can synergistically boost solar light harvesting and energy conversion. Thus, bladed devices using a PM6:Y6 active layer, with EIPAs and SIPAs in the ETL, have achieved an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.47% that is notably enhanced by the ratio of 11.4% from 12.03% of the single ZnO ETL. Simultaneously, this ESPAs-Z-in-ETL improves the compatibility between ITO and the active layer and optimizes the energy-level alignment at the interface. In PM6:Y6-based semitransparent polymer solar cells (ST-PSCs), doping EIPAs and SIPAs yielded an optimal PCE of 6.09% while maintaining a high AVT of 39.32%. This work demonstrates that incorporating Eu3+/Sm3+ nanoaggregates into PSCs is a critical advance for the scalable fabrication of ST-PSCs.

Efficient Hole Transfer via CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots Doping toward High-Performance Organic Solar Cells

Weiqiang Miao,Chuanhang Guo,Donghui Li,Teng Li,Pang Wang,Yujie Yang,Dan Liu,Tao Wang

Among the emerging photovoltaic technologies, organic and perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) solar cells have thrived on low-cost processing and extraordinary optoelectronic properties. Herein, CsPbBr 3 PQDs are incorporated into PM6:Y6-BO organic solar cell (OSC) to enhance device efficiency without scarifying the device stability. While the incorporation of PQDs has no impact on the molecular packing and phase separation of organic semiconductors, their presence enhances light absorption due to the Rayleigh scattering effect, promotes exciton dissociation in the Y6-BO phase, and forms an efficient hole transfer pathway from Y6-BO to PQDs and then to PM6 to improve hole transport. These contribute to increased short-circuit current density ( J SC ) and fill factor (FF) of OSCs with constant V OC . With the presence of 1 wt% CsPbBr 3 PQDs doping, the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the corresponding PM6:Y6-BO OSC is improved from 16.4% to 17.1%, where the device stability has not been affected due to the better phase stability of CsPbBr 3 PQDs than CsPbI 3 PQDs. This work unravels a new approach to enhance the efficiency of OSCs by applying PQDs doping to manipulate the photon-to-electricity conversion process.
