Triclosan detoxification through dechlorination and oxidation via microbial Pd-NPs under aerobic conditions

Yuan Chen,Yuancai Chen,Jianbo Jia,Bing Yan

The present study focuses on the successful preparation of microbial palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs). The even distribution of Pd in the periplasmic space of B. megaterium Y-4 cells is characterized using a transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the domination of Pd (0) in Pd-NPs. The microbial Pd-NPs were selected to detoxify triclosan (TCS). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to analyze the intermediate products of dechlorination and oxidization. Free radicals quenching and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) capturing experiments confirmed the crucial contribution of atomic H• and O 2 ·– to TCS degradation. Besides, TCS degradation by microbial Pd-NPs could alleviate the cytotoxicity of TCS polluted water. Meanwhile, great circulating utilization of microbial Pd-NPs was obtained in degrading TCS. Corresponding findings in the present study could provide new insight into the role of microbial Pd-NPs in detoxifying pollutants.

High Efficiency Photocatalyst with Ultra-Fine Pd NPs Constructed at Room Temperature for CO2 Reduction

Qing-Qing Pang,Xi-Zheng Fan

Graphical The ultra-fine Pd nanoparticles (NPs) are constructed by strong electrostatic adsorption strategy to ensure ample active sites, further enhance the light absorption intensity and optimize the separation efficiency of electron and hole, contributing to dramatically promote the performance of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction and stability in the gas-solid phase system. The photocatalytic CO 2 converted into the value-added products is regarded as a green strategy for the conversion and utilization of energy. Herein, we develop a commodious SEA (strong electrostatic adsorption) strategy to synthesize Pd-based photocatalysts with ultra-fine Pd NPs (Pd/TiO 2 −S−B). As verified by experiments and characterizations, the ultra-fine Pd NPs can inexorably heighten the reaction activity of catalyst, because it can provide several functions consist of improving the carrier separation efficiency, light absorption and CO 2 molecules adsorption. Meanwhile, the interaction of Pd and substrate can prevent the agglomeration of Pd NPs in reaction process. The designed Pd/TiO 2 −S−B contributes excellent performance in a gas-solid system. The yields of CO (105.1 μmol/g-cat) and CH 4 (254.3 μmol/g-cat) detected, are about 5.25 and 6.24-fold higher than those of pristine TiO 2 . Pd/TiO 2 −S−B also exhibits the forceful stability with acceptable decline of catalytic activity after three cycles. This opens the door for the preparation of high-performance and steady photocatalysts by reliable and effortless strategies toward CO 2 reduction.

Pd NPs supported on N-doped carbon layer coated ZrSBA-15 for efficient heterogeneous catalysis reactions

Yan-Yun Meng,Qing-Da An,Zuo-Yi Xiao,Shang-Ru Zhai,Zhan Shi

Through hydrothermal synthesis and impregnation-reduction processes, a series of Pd-based nanocomposites using N-doped carbon layers coated ZrSBA-15 as the supports have been manufactured, aiming to upgrade the catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts. Pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) was served as a nitrogen source to generate N-doped carbon (CN) layers that were pre-deposited into the acidic platelet framework ZrSBA-15, and then followed by introducing Pd 0 nanoparticles (NPs) onto it, finally leading to the formation of target composite Pd/CN-ZrSBA-15. The samples were characterized by XRD , TEM, SEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, FTIR, XPS etc. The catalytic performance of as-prepared catalysts was evaluated by the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol and the reduction of 4-NP, respectively. Duo to the platelet-like morphology with shortened channels and the modification of N-doped carbon layers, which could effectively decrease pore blocking in the process of preparation and reactions as well as enhance the metal-support interaction, the derived catalysts could afford 85% conversion of benzyl alcohol and 100% selectivity of benzaldehyde, and the conversion of 4-NP was also up to 96%. More remarkably, the catalysts could be reused at least ten times without significantly loss in catalytic activity.

The synergistic effect of Pd NPs and UiO-66 for enhanced activity of carbon dioxide methanation

Haoxi Jiang,Qiang Gao,Shutian Wang,Yifei Chen,Minhua Zhang

Carbon dioxide methanation is of great importance for both environment and energy because of the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and the utilization of carbon source. In this work, UiO-66 was employed as the support for palladium nanoparticles via a sol-gel method to enhance the activity of CO 2 methanation. The physical-chemical properties of as-prepared catalysts were characterized using N 2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that there was a synergistic effect between UiO-66 and supported Pd. CO 2 could be activated in UiO-66 via its Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 nods, while H 2 molecules were dissociated at Pd for further hydrogenation of activated CO 2 . As a result, the catalyst with a Pd loading of 6 wt.% exhibited a high activity with 56.0% of CO 2 conversion and 97.3% of CH 4 selectivity, corresponding to a STY of 856 g·h −1 ·kg cat −1 at 4 MPa and 340 °C.

Enhanced metal–support interactions between Pd NPs and ZrSBA-15 for efficient aerobic benzyl alcohol oxidation

Ran Ji,Shangru Zhai,Wei Zheng,Zuoyi Xiao,Qingda An,Feng Zhang

Towards the aerobic oxidation of alcohols, palladium nanoparticle immobilized mesoporous catalysts have been extensively investigated; however, the preparation of efficient catalytic materials without using complexing moieties remains a challenge. Herein, a simple yet effective concept that directly utilizes inorganic ZrSBA-15, a mild acidic framework, as a supporting matrix for Pd NPs was applied. The catalysts were fully characterized using X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was demonstrated that, on the basis of these characterization results, active Pd NPs had been successfully loaded onto the porous framework of ordered ZrSBA-15. More significantly, the method of preparation was also attributed to the catalytic properties of the resultant sample, in which the interactions between Pd species and acidic framework were improved, leading to a uniform dispersion and enhanced stabilization of Pd particles. Meanwhile, Pd/ZrSBA-15 catalysts exhibited expected activity in the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol with at least 95% conversion and 99% selectivity for benzaldehyde. Moreover, the oxidation reaction could be performed smoothly under solvent- and base-free conditions, and the catalyst was recycled several times with negligible loss in selectivity and conversion.

Growing Pd NPs on cellulose microspheres via in-situ reduction for catalytic decolorization of methylene blue

Yuqing Yu,Shilin Liu,Ying Pei,Xiaogang Luo

Dyeing industry highly contributes to environmental pollution and this needs to be addressed on priority. Pd NPs/CMs, a highly efficient and reusable catalyst for methylene blue (MB) decolorization , were fabricated by in-situ reduction method based on the cellulose microspheres (CMs). Pd NPs/CMs were characterized for the structure and catalytic performance by spectroscopic techniques such as SEM, EDS, XRD, IR, XPS, porosity, zeta potential , MS, and UV–visible spectroscopy, which all demonstrated that Pd NPs were distributed on the cellulose microspheres uniformly and exhibited excellent catalytic performances to decolorize a model organic dye MB in the presence of NaBH 4 with catalytic efficiency higher than 99.8%. More importantly, Pd NPs/CMs were proven to show excellent reusability for at least five cycles. Decolorization mechanism of MB, via the destruction of the chromophores (C N and S ) of MB, was established with the help of MS combined with IR and XPS. Blank experiments using pure cellulose microspheres were carried out simultaneously to estimate the level of catalytic capacity achieved to Pd NPs/CMs. These materials proved themselves having great potential in large scale applications to treat dye-containing wastewater.

N-doped hierarchical porous carbon anchored tiny Pd NPs: A mild and efficient quinolines selective hydrogenation catalyst

Fengwei Zhang,Chunlan Ma,Shuai Chen,Jianfei Zhang,Zhihong Li,Xian-Ming Zhang

Chemoselective hydrogenation of quinolines is often subjected to the problems of leaching and poisoning of catalytic active site as well as harsh reaction conditions. Developing a novel and high-performance heterogeneous catalyst is of paramount importance yet a huge challenge. Herein, we report a facile and efficient strategy for preparing the large surface area and highly N-doped hierarchical porous carbon anchored tiny Pd NPs catalyst, in which the low-cost chitosan, nitrogen-rich ionic liquids are served as composite precursors and KZ molten salt as friendly pore-forming agent. And a series of Pd@CIL-T (C refers to chitosan, IL refers to ionic liquid, T = 600–900 °C) catalysts are successfully fabricated via pyrolyzing aforesaid composites at different temperatures followed by anchoring the highly dispersed and small-sized Pd NPs on their surface. Among all the prepared catalysts, Pd@CIL-900 exhibits the optimal catalytic performance towards the selective hydrogenation of quinoline under extremely mild conditions (0.6 mol% Pd, 0.1 MPa H 2 and 50 °C). The kinetic experiments further reveal that such hydrogenation is subject to a pseudo-first order reaction and the apparent activation energy is as low as 41.1 kJ/mol, demonstrating excellent hydrogenation reaction rate. Moreover, the catalytic activity and selectivity are well maintained even after being reused for fifth reaction cycles.

Self-Healing Pd NPs@MXene/PVA hydrogel strain sensor: High sensitivity and wide range for electronic skin

Fu-Rui Teng,Hao Zheng,Si-Chen Tan,Li-Ling Fu,Yue Huang,Lin Zhu,Di Wu,Ai-Dong Li

The Pd NPs@MXene/PVA hydrogel strain sensor achieves an ultra-wide strain range from 10% to 1680% with high gauge factor of 18.4. • The sensor demonstrates self-healing with 98.4% efficiency in 25 s, retains 75% of tensile strength and 89% strain capacity. • Hydrogen bonding and Pd NPs enhance mechanical performance, with tensile strength of 60.8 kPa and fracture strain of 1680%. • Sensor array integrated into smart glove enables object grasping and 0–9 gesture recognition, showing potential for human–machine interfaces. Hydrogel strain sensors are promising for electronic skin due to their flexibility and biocompatibility, yet balancing mechanical robustness, sensing performance, and self-healing remains challenging. Here, we develop an optimized Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs)-decorated MXene/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel strain sensor (Pd NPs@MXene/PVA) with enhanced multifunctionality. Mechanically, the hydrogel achieves a tensile strength of 60.8 kPa and fracture strain of 1680%, outperforming pristine PVA hydrogel (17.3 kPa, 800%) through dynamic borate ester, hydrogen bonding and Pd NP reinforcement. For sensing, it provides repeatable responses over 100%–1500% strain, with cyclic stability validated at 200%–600%. Detectable responses from 10% to 1680% were observed under monotonic loading, and the maximum GF reached 18.4 in the 1200%–1680% regime. The device responds rapidly (600–700 ms) and was evaluated over 5000 stretching–releasing cycles, with the response becoming markedly more repeatable after an initial conditioning stage. Notably, it achieves 98.4% electrical self-healing efficiency within 25 s, retaining 75% tensile strength and 89% strain capability after healing, which is attributed to the dynamic borate ester bonds between PVA chains and tetraborate ions, together with reversible hydrogen-bonding interactions among PVA, MXene, and Pd NPs. Integrated into a smart glove, the sensor array distinguishes object grasps, generates distinguishable resistance patterns for digit gestures 0–9 and achieves high-accuracy MLP-based classification of digits 1–9, validating its practicality for human-machine interfaces. This work advances hydrogel sensor design by integrating Pd NPs for optimized multifunctionality, offering a robust platform for next-generation electronic skin. Carbonized cellulose microspheres loaded with Pd NPs as catalyst in p-nitrophenol reduction and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction

Jiayin Gao,Yaoyao Wang,Yuqing Yu,Mengxiang Zhu,Wen Kong,Genyan Liu,Xiaogang Luo

Catalytic reduction of p -nitrophenol is usually carried out using transition metal nanoparticles such as gold, palladium , silver , and copper, especially palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs), which are characterized by fast reaction rate, high turnover frequency , good selectivity, and high yield. However, the aggregation and precipitation of the metals lead to the decomposition of the catalyst, which results in a significant reduction of the catalytic activity. Therefore, the preparation of homogeneous stabilized palladium nanoparticles catalysts has been widely studied. Stabilized palladium nanoparticles mainly use synthetic polymers . Cellulose microspheres , as a natural polymer material with low-cost and porous fiber network structure, are excellent carriers for stabilizing metal nanoparticles . Cellulose microspheres impregnated with palladium metal nanoparticles were carbonized to have a larger specific surface area and highly dispersed palladium nanoparticles, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the catalytic reduction of p -nitrophenol. In this work, the cellulose carbon-based microspheres palladium (Pd@CCM) catalysts were designed and characterized by SEM, TEM , EDS, XRD, FTIR, XPS , TGA , BET, and so on. Furthermore, the catalytic performance of Pd@CCM catalysts was investigated via p -nitrophenol reduction, which showed high catalytic activity. This catalyst also exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Linking aromatic monomer and benzene through Suzuki-Miyaura coupling was presented as an effective route to obtaining  biaryls , and the synthesis method is low-cost and simple. In addition, Pd@CCM showed desirable recyclability while maintaining its catalytic activity even after five recycles. This work is highly suggestive of the design and application of the heterogeneous catalyst .

Scheme Z Pd-NPs Embedded in 3DOM-LaCoO3-Dispersed pCN Heterojunction for Stimulating Visible Light-Catalyzed Solar H2 Production

Rui Chen,Ying-Ying Wang,Xia Jiang,Ming-Hao Ji,Hao-Yan Shi,Hai-Long Wang,Yan-Xin Chen,Can-Zhong Lu

This article describes a photocatalytic (PC) hydrogen evolution technology that utilizes Pd/LaCoO3/PCN nanocomposites. In the preparation process, a narrow band gap pure LaCoO3 phase was obtained using a template method, which was subsequently combined with Pd-NPs loaded with pCN to form a Z-scheme heterojunction. The formation of this heterojunction resulted in a material with improved charge transfer characteristics and electron well performance. Under visible light irradiation, the composite material demonstrated a higher PC hydrogen evolution activity, resulting in a H2 yield of 40.2 μmol g–1 h–1. This yield represents a 259 times improvement over pure pCN materials, respectively. Furthermore, in the presence of a sacrificial agent, triethanolamine (TEOA), the production of H2 increased compared to methanol, likely due to the more vital binding ability of the amine-containing pCN to TEOA. Finally, the study found that Pd/LaCoO3/PCN nanocomposites displayed excellent stability and reusability during three continuous cycles. These results suggest that this material may become an efficient and sustainable technology for solar fuel production.

Functionalized poly(ionic liquid)s bridging Pd NPs and lipase for highly efficient dynamic kinetic resolution of chiral amine

Qian Wang,Limei Sheng,Xuan Guo,Rong Chen,Chengjie Zhou,Fu Yang

Dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of chiral amines with enzyme and noble metal has been widely concerned in chemistry, biology and pharmacy fields. While the synergistic effect and long-term stability of enzyme-noble metal in catalysts remain challenging. In this paper, several functional polymers were designed and employed as the carrier of lipase and palladium (Pd) for one-pot DKR of α-phenethylamine. By modulating the multisite weak force (MSWF) of the polymers on the active centers, the optically pure product with high conversion (>99%) and ee (>99%) were obtained and the designed catalyst Pd@PE-2OH_CalB showed superior stability to other commercial catalysts, such as Pd/C and Novozym 435. Additionally, the heterogeneous chemoenzymatic catalysts could be easily recovered and recycled up to seven times without sacrificing efficiency. Further investigation revealed that the enhanced catalytic performance depended on MSWF formed by the abundant ionic sites, functional groups, and lots of hydrogen bonds of poly(ionic liquid)s.
