It is attractive but remains challenging to develop nanomaterials-based methods to realize the colorimetric detection of ultratrace biological analytes. In this work, an HAuCl 4 -H 2 O 2 system was developed for the visual detection of intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) based on the Au-Pt/SiO 2 sensing platform. Owing to their excellent intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, Au-Pt/SiO 2 nanospheres were introduced to catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 and then directly reduce HAuCl 4 into gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for the naked-eye detection. The produced Au NPs behaved color variations from light purple to wine red as H 2 O 2 concentration increased. Under the optimal conditions, this strategy showed excellent sensitivity for H 2 O 2 with a detection limit of 0.1 nM by naked-eye readout and 0.1 pM by UV–vis spectrometer (S/N = 3), as well as acceptable selectivity for H 2 O 2 , which could meet the demand for the detection of H 2 O 2 in biological systems. The method was further validated by the determination of H 2 O 2 in HeLa cells with low cellular cytotoxicity. Thus, this strategy would provide simple and sensitive detection of H 2 O 2 in biological systems, revealing the potential application in clinical, biological and environmental researches.

Abstract A series of bimetallic Cu samples (Cu–Pt/SiO 2 , Cu–Pd/SiO 2 , Cu–Ag/SiO 2 , Cu–Ni/SiO 2 ) were prepared by wetness impregnation method, then investigated for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). We furthered the study and found that Cu–Pt/SiO 2 got the smallest particle size and greatest dispersion. Besides, it was found that Pt promoted reduction of Cu 2+ . Compared with other Cu–Pt molar ratio, Cu–Pt/SiO 2 (1:0.2) was the preferable catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO. It is worth noting that Cu–Pt/SiO 2 presented the highest activity with a 96 % selectivity to 1,2-PDO and a nearly 100 % conversion of glycerol at 473 K, 40 bar initial H 2 pressure, 12 h, which is much higher activity than monometallic Cu/SiO 2 , Pt/SiO 2 and other bimetallic Cu samples. Meanwhile, the used Cu–Pt/SiO 2 catalyst still preformed high activity. Furthermore, it was found that the presence of Pt decreased the aggregation of particles during the hydrogenolysis of glycerol. Transition metal is quantitatively investigated as a promoter of Pt-supported catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO 2 (CO 2 -ODP). However, the criteria for selecting the transition metal are largely from trial and error. In this work, Pt/SiO 2 catalysts promoted with 3d transition metals (TMs) of Mn, Fe, Co or Ni (PtTM/SiO 2 ) are comparatively studied for CO 2 -ODP. We found that the C 3 H 6 selectivity and conversions of propane and CO 2 are clearly improved when TMs are introduced into Pt/SiO 2 . Moreover, the apparent activation energy for the C 3 H 6 formation during CO 2 -ODP is decreased in the order of PtNi/SiO 2 > PtCo/SiO 2 > PtFe/SiO 2 > PtMn/SiO 2 . Among the investigated catalysts, PtMn/SiO 2 is the most active and selective catalyst for the activation of C-H bonds in propane to produce C 3 H 6 while PtNi/SiO 2 is the most favorable catalyst for the formation of by-products via the dry reforming of propane with CO 2 and propane cracking. Essentially, the catalytic results are well explained as the increased electron density of Pt over the PtTM/SiO 2 catalysts via the enhanced electron transfer from TM having a smaller electronegativity. This understanding is important for the rational design of a high-performance Pt-based bimetallic catalyst for CO 2 -ODP.

Tailoring the interface between active metals and promoters to improve catalytic performance is a challenging issue for bicomponent catalysts. Herein, we developed a series of silica supported Pt-CoO x hybrid nanocatalysts though in situ oxidation of supported bimetallic PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) with different Pt/Co ratios. Focusing on the hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol as the model reaction, the obtained Pt-CoO x /SiO 2 catalysts showed superior activity and selectivity compared to Pt/SiO 2 , and the sample with a Co/Pt molar ratio of 1/3 performed the best. Our research showed that the CoO x on Pt not only changed its electronic and geometric properties, but also promoted the adsorption of reactants and the dissociation of H 2 . A further increase of the Co/Pt ratio to 1/1, however, reduced the activity due to blockage of the Pt surface.

Gas-phase hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene was investigated over Pt/SiO2 catalysts with the aim of understanding the complete hydrogenation of dienes. The measurements focused on the effect of Pt dispersion on the product distribution and the kinetics of n-butane formation. Under the investigated conditions with an excess of hydrogen, the selectivity to n-butane sharply decreased from 41.6% to less than 3% at a 1,3-butadiene conversion of ∼10% when the average Pt particle size increased from 3.9 to 22 nm. Correspondingly, the apparent activation energy for n-butane formation was measured to increase by about 2.7 times. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) observations via alternating 1,3-butadiene and hydrogen feeds over the catalysts demonstrated that 1-butene was the major reaction intermediate in the process of 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation. By analysis of the kinetic data using the Horiuti–Polanyi mechanism with 1-butene as the intermediate, different reactivities of hydrogen on the catalysts towards CC bond hydrogenation were proposed to understand the variation of the selectivity to n-butane with Pt dispersion. This viewpoint was further supported by DFT calculation of 1-butene hydrogenation with hydrogen at different sites on the Pt(111) surface.

Graphical Pt does it again ! The morphology of Pt nanoparticles was successfully regulated by calcinating Pt/SiO 2 catalysts in different atmospheres and achieved a 78.1 % cyclohexanone yield at 170 °C in oxidative dehydrogenation of KA-oil. It is industrially attractive to produce cyclohexanone directly from gas-phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of KA-oil (a mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) since extra alcohol-ketone separation process can be potentially omitted. Herein, by simply tuning the calcination atmosphere of Pt/SiO 2 , we successfully regulated the morphology of Pt nanoparticles and optimized their catalytic performance in ODH of KA-oil. Pt/SiO 2 calcined in O 2 atmosphere showed a cube-like morphology and achieved a 78.1 % cyclohexanone yield at 170 °C, which surpassed its counterpart calcined in H 2 and most of the reported catalysts. Further experimental and theoretical calculation results indicated that cubic Pt nanoparticles possessed stronger adsorption ability to cyclohexanol and therefore performed better in ODH of KA-oil.

A facile process was developed for the synthesis of FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres based on the hydrothermal treatment of FeCl3·6H2O, selenium and NaBH4 in ethanolamine solvent, followed by reducing HPtCl4 with NaBH4 in the presence of FeSe particles to obtain FeSe coated with Pt NPs (FeSe–Pt), ending with a surfactant assembled sol–gel process to obtain FeSe–Pt@SiO2. The morphology and composition of FeSe–Pt@SiO2 were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high resolution TEM, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Structural analyses revealed that FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres were of regular spherical shape with smooth surfaces due to the SiO2 shells, compared with FeSe particles with 150 nm lateral diameter. The prepared FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres possessed both intrinsic glucose oxidase (GOx-) and peroxidase-mimic activities, and we engineered an artificial enzymatic cascade system with high activity and stability based on this nanostructure. The good catalytic performance of the composites could be attributed to the synergy between the functions of FeSe particles and Pt NPs. Significantly, the FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres as robust nanoreactors can catalyze a self-organized cascade reaction, which includes oxidation of glucose by oxygen to yield gluconic acid and H2O2, and then oxidation of 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 to produce a colour change. Colorimetric detection of H2O2 and glucose using the FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres was conducted with high detection sensitivities, 0.227 nM and 1.136 nM, respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of practical sensing applications. It is therefore believed that our findings in this study could open up the possibility of utilizing FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres as enzymatic mimics in diagnostic and biotechnology fields.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the main pollutants produced in industrial processes. Catalytic oxidation is an effective method to eliminate VOCs, and the key lies in designing efficient metal catalyst. In this work, Pd-Pt/SiO 2 bimetallic catalysts were designed and prepared by the immobilization method, and their performances for toluene oxidation were evaluated. The addition of Pt into the catalyst elevated markedly the reduction of Pd active sites, leading to abundant electron-deficient Pd 0 and electron-rich Pt 0 in the Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst, which were confirmed by TEM, CO pulse adsorption and in-situ XPS. As revealed by O 2 -TPD and toluene-TPD characterization, the cooperative effect of electron-deficient Pd 0 and electron-rich Pt 0 in Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst facilitated the activation of O 2 and toluene, thus enhanced greatly its activity. A conversion of 90% (T 90 ) for toluene was achieved over Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst at 165 ℃, and the apparent activation energy ( E a ) over Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst was lower than that over other Pd-Pt bimetallic and monometallic Pd or Pt catalysts. Additionally, the reaction mechanism was studied by In - situ DRIFTS, the results showed that the toluene oxidation passed successively benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and maleic anhydride , then maleic anhydride was further oxidized to CO 2 and water.

Herein, we fabricated a series of bimetallic Pt-Ni catalysts supported on mesoporous silica nanorods ( m SNR, specific BET surface area of 1802 m 2 g −1 ) to study the effect of Ni/Pt ratio on the product selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation. Both monometallic Pt/ m SNR and Ni 50 Pt 50 / m SNR catalysts revealed negligible methane selectivity. However, methane became the major product only when increasing the Ni/Pt ratio up to 9. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) characterizations showed that the Pt/Ni ratio on the catalyst surface was appreciably higher than the bulk composition, suggesting the enrichment of Pt on the surface ( e.g. , Pt/Ni of 61/39 for Ni 50 Pt 50 / m SNR catalyst). The Pt/Ni ratio was crucial in determining the CH 4 /CO selectivity, and the addition of a tiny amount of Pt could improve the catalytic performance and stability of Ni/ m SNR. Among the different catalysts, Ni 98 Pt 2 / m SNR showed the best CO 2 conversion (59%) and CH 4 selectivity (96%) at 400 °C, 0.1 MPa, 9600 mL h −1 g cat −1 , and H 2 /CO 2 of 3. In-situ DRIFTS and temperature-programmed surface experiments suggested that the dissociated adsorption of CO 2 on the Pt site led to CO*, but the strongly adsorbed CO* cannot be further hydrogenated to CH 4 over the Pt site. In contrast, CO* could be further hydrogenated into CH 4 via CH x O* intermediates on adjacent Ni sites.

Modulating the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) is one of the effective means to promote catalytic activity because it can adjust the electron occupancy of the d -band of noble metals, further facilitating the activation of reactants. Herein, we prepared a Pt/SiO 2 catalyst with an ultralow Pt loading of 0.05% and found that its catalytic activity in HCHO oxidation outperformed that of the Pt/TiO 2 counterpart, owing to the EMSI effect between Pt and SiO 2 . On this basis, the alkali metal Na was used as a promoter, and the formation of highly active Pt-O x (OH)-Na clusters enabled the complete oxidation of HCHO at room temperature. With ultralow Pt loading, the Pt-Na/SiO 2 catalyst reduces the cost of practical application remarkably. In situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations confirmed that the reaction pathways were distinct on Pt/SiO 2 and Pt-Na/SiO 2 . Specifically, on Pt-Na/SiO 2 , the reaction follows the mechanism of the direct degradation of formate species with the assistance of active hydroxyls; while on Pt/SiO 2 , CO is the only intermediate formed by the dehydrogenation of HCHO, due to the lack of active hydroxyls. These findings provide new insights into the reaction pathway of HCHO oxidation.

Based on tyrosinase modified Au-Pt@SiO2/Au-graphene (APS/Au-GN) electrode, a highly sensitive biosensor was developed for the direct electrochemical detection of bisphenol A (BPA) in food matrices. In this work, Au-graphene (Au-GN), Au-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites (APS NPs) and tyrosinase (Tyr) were subsequently cast on glass carbon electrode (GCE) via the electrostatic interaction and Van der Waals force. The self-assembled APS NPs and Tyr were decorated on Au-GN forming a new hierarchical three dimensional nanostructure. Due to the dense Au/Pt dots distributed on silica nanoparticles, APS NPs could behave excellent catalytic activity and stability. In this regard, BPA could be sensitively detected by square wave voltammetry (SWV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with well-defined oxidation peaks at 480 mV and 660 mV, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, SWV detection behaved good analytical performance toward BPA with a wide linear response ranging from 0.01 mg L−1 to10 mg L−1. The detection limit of APS/Au-GN/GCE for BPA was 1.80 μg L−1 (S/N = 3). Moreover, the method showed good reproducibility in practical samples with recoveries from 87.4% to 110.7%, suggesting its potential application in food analysis and safety verification.

Hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene over supported Pt particles has long been known as a structure sensitive reaction, yet the nature of this phenomenon has not been well understood. We have previously addressed the reaction pathway for 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation over ∼22 nm Pt particles. In this study, the behaviors of SiO2 supported ∼2.9 nm Pt particles towards 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation have been investigated with the aim of providing a fundamental explanation for the structure sensitivity of this reaction. Interestingly, it was found that the product distribution for the present catalyst towards 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation was sensitive to temperature. However, the evolution of 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation over the catalyst with temperature was not captured by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy. The detected carbonaceous species on the Pt surface are more likely to be spectators rather than reaction intermediates for the formation of butenes and n-butane. To understand the behaviors of the catalyst, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to explore the pathways for the formation of the products with low activation barriers. The results show that the coverage and the location of the hydrogen atom are the two key factors for the interpretation of the behavior of Pt particles towards 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation.
