Electrochemical oxidation has been considered as an efficient method to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Maintaining low power consumption while increasing the number of oxidation intermediates is deserving of exploring. Herein, Ti/SnO2–Sb/Zr0.3Ir0.7O2 was prepared by Zr doped into IrO2 and used for Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The addition of Zr significantly increased the electrochemically active area and facilitated the catalyst to degrade SMX dramatically at a lower overpotential. The extremely outstanding lifetime of catalysts can reach 800 h during the accelerated life test, which showed excellent stability and developmental prospects. The overpotential at 10 mA·cm–2 is about 329 mV, indicating that this electrode has a high oxygen evolution reaction activity. Furthermore, the electrical efficiency per log order for the electrode is only 8.50 kW h m–3 at 4 V. Our research provides new anode electrochemical catalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Even after pre-treatment, livestock and poultry wastewater still contain high concentrations of ammonia and residual antibiotics. These could be removed economically using the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process with zero-valent iron (ZVI). The interaction of antibiotics and nitrogen in this process needs to be clarified and controlled, however, to achieve good removal performance. Otherwise, antibiotics might generate transformation products (TPs) with higher toxicity and lead to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which could cause persistent toxicity and the risk of disease transmission to the ecological environment. This study investigated the impact of ZVI on AGS for nitrogen and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. The results show that AGS could maintain good ammonia removal performance and that the existence of SMX had a negative impact on ammonia oxidation activities. ZVI contributed to an increase in the abundance of nitrite oxidation bacteria, denitrifying bacteria and the functional genes of nitrogen removal. This led to better total nitrogen removal and a decrease in N 2 O emission. Accompanied by biological nitrogen transformation, SMX could be transformed into 14 TPs through five pathways. ZVI has the potential to enhance transformation pathways with TPs of lower ecotoxicity, thereby reducing the acute and chronic toxicity of the effluent. Unfortunately, ZVI might enhance the abundance of sul1 , sul2 , and sul3 in AGS, which increases the risk of sulfonamide antibiotic resistance. In AGS, Opitutaceae , Xanthomonas , Spartobacteria and Mesorhizobium were potential hosts for ARGs. This study provides theoretical references for the interaction of typical antibiotics and nitrogen in the biological treatment process of wastewater and bioremediation of natural water bodies.

Improvements in plant activity and functional microbial communities are important to ensure the stability and efficiency of pollutant removal measures in cold regions. Although electrochemistry is known to accelerate pollutant degradation , cold stress acclimation of plants and the stability and activity of plant-microbial synergism remain poorly understood. The sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal, iron plaque morphology, plant activity, microbial community, and function responses were investigated in an electrolysis-integrated ecological floating bed (EFB) at 6 ± 2 ℃. Electrochemistry significantly improved SMX removal and plant activity. Dense and uniform iron plaque was found on root surfaces in L-E-Fe which improved the plant adaptability at low temperatures and provided more adsorption sites for bacteria. The microbial community structure was optimized and the key functional bacteria for SMX degradation (e.g., Actinobacteriota, Pseudomonas ) were enriched. Electrochemistry improves the relative abundance of enzymes related to energy metabolism, thereby increasing energy responses to SMX and low temperatures. Notably, electrochemistry improved the expression of target genes ( sad B and sad C, especially sad C) involved in SMX degradation. Electrochemistry enhances hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between SMX and sad C, thereby enhancing SMX degradation and transformation. This study provides a deeper understanding of the electrochemical stability of antibiotic degradation at low temperatures.

Abstract Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are serious pollutants to ecosystems and environments. Previous studies showed that microbial degradation of SAs such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX) proceeds via a sad -encoded oxidative pathway, while the sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase gene, sul , is responsible for SA resistance. However, the co-occurrence of sad and sul genes, as well as how the sul gene affects SMX degradation, was not explored. In this study, two SMX-degrading bacterial strains, SD-1 and SD-2, were cultivated from an SMX-degrading enrichment. Both strains were Paenarthrobacter species and were phylogenetically identical; however, they showed different SMX degradation activities. Specifically, strain SD-1 utilized SMX as the sole carbon and energy source for growth and was a highly efficient SMX degrader, while SD-2 did could not use SMX as a sole carbon or energy source and showed limited SMX degradation when an additional carbon source was supplied. Genome annotation, growth, enzymatic activity tests, and metabolite detection revealed that strains SD-1 and SD-2 shared a sad -encoded oxidative pathway for SMX degradation and a pathway of protocatechuate degradation. A new sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase gene, sul918 , was identified in strain SD-1, but not in SD-2. Moreover, the lack of sul918 resulted in low SMX degradation activity in strain SD-2. Genome data mining revealed the co-occurrence of sad and sul genes in efficient SMX-degrading Paenarthrobacter strains. We propose that the co-occurrence of sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase and sad genes is crucial for efficient SMX biodegradation. Key points
•
Two sulfamethoxazole-degrading strains with distinct degrading activity, Paenarthrobacter sp. SD-1 and Paenarthrobacter sp. SD-2, were isolated and identified.
•

•
A new plasmid-borne SMX resistance gene (sul918) of strain SD-1 plays a crucial role in SMX degradation efficiency.

To overcome mass-transfer limitations in solid–liquid catalytic reactions, a microwave-assisted system was developed based on bimetallic CuFe 2 O 4 spinel for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The catalyst achieved efficient sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation with a remarkable rate constant of 0.36 min −1 , representing an approximately 72 times faster rate than the non-microwave CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS system and superior to most reported analogues. Additionally, the microwave-assisted CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS system demonstrated higher efficiency than the PMS-only, Fe 3 O 4 /PMS, and CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS systems, which confirms the crucial role of Cu in the spinel structure. Quenching tests confirmed that superoxide radicals ( • O 2 − ) generated at the catalyst-solution interface played a dominant role. The system exhibited excellent stability and strong anti-interference ability across a wide pH range (3.0–9.0) and against common inorganic anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− , and HCO 3 − ). Under optimized conditions (1 g ·L −1 catalyst dosage and 700 W microwave power), nearly complete SMX removal was achieved within 20 min. XRD and XPS characterization confirmed that the crystal phase and chemical state of the CuFe 2 O 4 catalyst remained stable before and after the reaction. This study presents an efficient, stable approach for removing antibiotics from water and underscores the potential of microwave-enhanced interface catalysis in advanced oxidation processes.

To address the concern about residual antibiotics in effluent of sewage treatment plants, cobalt silicate (CoSiOx) was prepared by hydrothermal method and employed as an activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the rapid degradation of antibiotics. Taking sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC) as representatives of antibiotics, the effects of operation parameters (CoSiOx and PMS dosage) and water quality parameters (temperature, solution pH, bicarbonate, chloride, and natural organic matter) on degradation of target pollutants by a CoSiOx activated PMS process (CoSiOx/PMS) were investigated. The mechanism involved in the interaction of CoSiOx and PMS was also elucidated. The results indicated that CoSiOx/PMS can degrade SMX and TC at fast pseudo-first-order rate constants (0.47 and 0.56 min−1 respectively) under optimal conditions. Increasing the dosage of PMS and CoSiOx appropriately was beneficial to the degradation of antibiotics. Chloride, bicarbonate, and HA showed negative effects on the degradation process due to their free radical-scavenging ability and were ranked as chloride < bicarbonate < HA. Abundant Co–OHs and oxygen vacancies on the surface of CoSiOx contributed to its excellent activation capability towards PMS. The radical scavenging experiments indicated that target pollutant degradation mainly resulted from the attack of sulfate radicals (43.0% contribution) and hydroxyl radicals (52.9% contribution). The practicality of CoSiOx/PMS was verified by continuous flow test. This study provides a cheap, highly efficient, and feasible advanced depollution method based on CoSiOx.

A novel silver nanoparticle-modified magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube composite (Ag-FMWCNTs) was synthesized by embedding Fe3O4 and assembling Ag nanoparticles in one-step. The properties of the Ag-FMWCNTs composites and magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs) were studied by scanning electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and the effects of solution pH and ionic strength to adsorb emerging contaminant sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from aqueous solution on different multi-walled carbon nanotubes-based adsorbents were determined. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics could be explained well by means of the pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. The pH experiments showed that maximum adsorption occurred at pH 4. Additionally, all adsorbents had a strong adsorption ability to SMX and the Langmuir maximum capacity followed the order: 5% Ag-FMWCNTs (118.58 mg g−1) > 3% Ag-FMWCNTs (86.41 mg g−1) > MWCNTs (73.69 mg g−1) > 1% Ag-FMWCNTs (70.26 mg g−1) > FMWCNTs (45.13 mg g−1). The spent adsorbents were regenerated in methanol. It was also found that after regenerating four times, multi-walled carbon composites retained up to 80% of their original adsorption performance. Therefore, the Ag-FMWCNTs composite could be used as a potential adsorbent for removing sulfamethoxazole from water.

The cobalt monoatomic catalyst with 3D ordered macropores structure (3DOM Co/NC) was prepared using the crystalline porous material ZIF-67 and SiO 2 as the precursor and template, and used to investigate the effect of its activation with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) on sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. The mesoporous structure mostly retained after ZIF-67 carbonisation, and the formation of new homogeneous macropores after the removal of the SiO 2 template, which greatly increases the surface area of the catalyst (429 m 2 g −1 ) and promotes long-range mass transfer. Additionally, Co monoatomic sites were formed in the porous skeleton, providing electrons that were utilised for the activation of PMS. This distinctive structure enables it to almost completely degrade of 20 ppm SMX within 3 min and show excellent catalytic degradation efficiency in a wide pH range (3.0–9.0) and high-salinity simulated wastewater (10–100 mM). In addition, the main ROS in the catalytic degradation process were explored as 1 O 2 and O •2- . Combined with the results of DFT calculations and product analyses, the active sites of SMX were predicted and the degradation pathways and mechanisms were inferred, confirming that the degradation process of SMX poses a low risk of toxicity to the environment. This study reveals that the addition of 3DOM Co/NC was more favourable for the activation of PMS for SMX degradation, which contributes to the development and improvement of advanced oxidation processes for environmental remediation.

Efficient removal of antibiotics from the aquatic environment is urgently needed due to their obstinate accumulation and non-biodegradability. In this study, a mesoporous carbon material (ZC-0.5) was successfully synthesized for the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one of the major antibiotics for the treatment of human and animal infections. ZIF-8 as the precursor of ZC-0.5, specifically, using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium laurate (SL) as dual templates and carbonizing at 800 ℃. This novel adsorbent exhibited a high proportion of mesopore (75.64%) and a large specific surface area (1459.73 m 2 ·g −1 ). The adsorption experiment examined the reusability of ZC-0.5 and that it could retain superior maximum adsorption capacities (167.45 mg∙L −1 ) after five cycles of adsorption and desorption. The adsorption process satisfied the pseudo-second-order kinetic (PSO) and mixed first- and second-order kinetic (MOE). It also satisfied the Freundlich and Sips isotherm models. Moreover, thermodynamic calculation indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermal, and entropy-increasing. Furthermore, plausible adsorption mechanisms were explained through van der Waals force, electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic force, π-π interaction, and hydrogen bond. This work offers a new efficient adsorbent for antibiotic elimination.

Little information is available regarding the kinetics, products, and pathways of simultaneous SMX degradation and Cd(II) immobilization from wastewater. In this study, a novel bacterium ( Achromobacter sp. L3) with SMX degradation and Cd(II) immobilization capabilities was isolated. The boundary conditions of SMX degradation were as follows: initial pH 6–8, temperature 25–30 °C, and SMX concentration 10–40 mg/L −1 . The boundary conditions of Cd(II) immobilization were as follows: initial pH 7–9, temperature 25–35 °C, and SMX concentration 10–30 mg/L −1 . The maximum SMX degradation and Cd(II) removal were 91.98% and 100%, respectively. The SMX degradation and Cd(II) immobilization data fitted well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, indicating that the two pollutants conform to the same degradation rule. Moreover, the microbial degradation , sediment adsorption, and intermediates identified in the experiments were used to explore the mechanisms of SMX and Cd(II) removal. These results indicate that microbial removal and sediment adsorption play equally important roles in Cd(II) immobilization; however, microbial degradation plays a decisive role in SMX degradation. Furthermore, the relationship between aerobic denitrification, SMX degradation, and Cd(II) immobilization was proposed. These results may provide valuable insights for treatment of wastewater polluted by antibiotics and heavy metals.

The increasing global incidence of cyanobacterial blooms coincides with the widespread detection of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aquatic environments, posing a potential threat to the integrity of freshwater ecosystems. However, the impact of SMX on algal communities under bloom conditions remains unclear. In this study, multi-omics approaches were employed under laboratory conditions to investigate the reshaping of algal communities under different concentrations of SMX. The results showed that SMX exposure significantly promoted the growth of Cyanobium sp. PCC 7009, which reached a relative abundance of 47.69%–62.08% in the SMX-treated groups (E1–E4), markedly affected algal community density and co-occurrence networks, and also reduced community diversity. Interestingly, algal community alpha diversity under high-concentration SMX exposure (2000 μg/L) (2.10) was higher than under medium concentrations (20–200 μg/L), indicating a reshaping of community structure, while low concentrations stimulated overall algal growth. This is likely because the metabolic functions of species within the community underwent varying degrees of responses under high-concentration SMX stress. The metabolic functions of sensitive species such as Chlorococcum sp. KSF0227 were significantly inhibited, while the downregulation of glycerolipid metabolism and glycerophospholipid metabolism in tolerant species may have released niche space. The behavioral network analysis focused on the impacts of the phycosphere bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota) on algal communities, with these interactions predominantly characterized by altruistic and antagonistic interactions. These impacts may be linked to the upregulation of signaling and nutrient metabolic pathways within the phycosphere bacteria consortia. This study advances beyond traditional single-species toxicity testing and provides a basis for assessing the ecological risks of antibiotics in eutrophic waters.

The cobalt ferrite materials (Co x Fe 3−x O 4 ) with different molar ratios of Co:Fe (1:16, 1:8, 1:4, 1:2, and 3:4) were synthesized by simple co-precipitation method, and used for catalyzing activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The effects of catalyst dose, PMS dose, pH value, and inorganic ions on the degradation of SMX were investigated. Particularly, the degradation efficiency of SMX reached 91% within 10 min in CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS, and the removal rate of SMX achieved 81% at first 1 min. Meanwhile, the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS reaction system exhibited excellent catalytic performance at a wide pH range from 3.00 to 11.00. The CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst could be easily magnetically separated and exhibited high stability in cycle experiments. EPR and quenching experiments showed that 1 O 2 , SO 4 − , and OH species were produced in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system, especially OH and 1 O 2 played dominant roles during the degradation of SMX. The catalytic degradation mechanism of SMX in the CoFe 2 O 4 /SMX system was proposed, involving radical process and non-radical process. This work will provide a new way for the efficient treatment of wastewater especially those containing SMX compounds.
