Dual-Mode Textile Sensor Based on PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs Composites for Pressure–Temperature Detection

Ying Wang,Qingchao Zhang,Zhidong Zhang

As an innovative branch of electronics, intelligent electronic textiles (e-textiles) have broad prospects in applications such as e-skin, human–computer interaction, and smart homes. However, it is still a challenge to distinguish multiple stimuli in the same e-textile. Herein, we propose a dual-parameter smart e-textile that can detect human pulse and body temperature in real time, with high performance and no signal interference. The doping of SWCNTs in PEDOT:PSS improves the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the prepared composites, which results in excellent pressure and temperature-sensing properties of the PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs/CS@PET-textile (PSCP) sensor. The dual-mode sensor has high sensitivity (32.4 kPa−1), fast response time (~21 ms), and excellent durability (>2000 times) in pressure detection. Concurrently, this sensor maintains a high Seebeck coefficient of 25 μV/K in the 0–120 K temperature range with a tremendous linear relationship. Based on impressive dual-mode sensing characteristics and independent temperature-difference- and pressure-sensing mechanisms, smart e-textile sensors realize the real-time simultaneous monitoring of weak pulse signals and human body temperature, showing great potential in medical healthcare. In addition, the potential energy is excited by the temperature gradient between the human skin and the environment, which provides a novel idea for wearable self-powered devices.

Construction of a Brönsted-Lewis solid acid catalyst La-PW-SiO2/SWCNTs based on electron withdrawing effect of La(III) on π bond of SWCNTs for biodiesel synthesis from esterification of oleic acid and methanol

Qing Shu,Xinyuan Liu,Yanting Huo,Yuhui Tan,Caixia Zhang,Laixi Zou

A novel solid Brönsted-Lewis acid catalyst La-PW-SiO 2 /SWCNTs (single-wall carbon nanotubes) was synthesized from the synergistic modification of H 3 PW 12 O 40 (HPW) by single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with sidewall hydroxyl groups (SWCNTs–OH) and La 3+ via sol–gel method. The freshly prepared catalyst was characterized by several methods, and the catalytic activity and stability of it were studied from the esterification of oleic acid and methanol. Results showed that the highest conversion of oleic acid was 93.1% (mass) and maintained as high as 88.7% (mass) after six cycles of La-PW-SiO 2 /SWCNTs. The high catalytic activity and stability of La-PW-SiO 2 /SWCNTs can be attributed to the strong electron withdrawing effect of La 3+ on π bond of SWCNTs , because it can facilitate the formation of a large number of strong Lewis acid sites. Therefore, the reduction of catalytic activity of a solid acid catalyst due to the fact that hydration reaction of its Brönsted acid sites can be effectively reduced. La-PW-SiO 2 /SWCNTs can be an efficient and economical catalyst, because it shows good catalytic activity and stability.

Electrochemical behavior of arctigenin at a novel voltammetric sensor based on Iodide/SWCNTs composite film modified electrode and its sensitive determination

Wenjing Wang,Lu Wang,Lina Zou,Gaiping Li,Baoxian Ye

Arctigenin was determinated by an electrochemical method for the first time based on a novel voltammetric sensor, which was prepared by simple dipping-drying of SWCNTs on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) initially and then electrochemical deposition of Iodide. The resulting Iodide/SWCNTs/GCE displayed a significant voltammetric response to arctigenin due to the electrocatalytic ability of Iodide for arctigenin and a large specific surface area, excellent electric conductivity of SWCNTs. Meanwhile, the redox mechanism of arctigenin on Iodide/SWCNTs/GCE was also studied. The wide linear range of 3   ×   10 −   8   mol   L −   1 to 5   ×   10 −   6   mol   L −   1 and low detection limit of 1   ×   10 −   8   mol   L −   1 for the determination of arctigenin were achieved together with high sensitivity, selectivity, good stability. To examine the practical analytical utility of the proposed electrode, the real sample Fructus Arctii was examined and the result was found satisfactory.

Bioinspired, highly sensitive interlocked flexible textile pressure sensor based on multilayer SWCNTs/PVP/rGO dendritic for gesture recognition

Yong-song Tan,Weiyi Han,You Wu,Dajiang Kuang,Liyang Song,Chaoxia Wang

The development of wearable gesture recognition systems, capable of converting intricate human gestures into electric signals and graphical representations , poses significant challenges for future advancements in health monitoring and human-machine interfaces. In response to this demand, we present an approach centered on a cell-inspired, multiscale hierarchical structural piezoresistive pressure sensor designed for gesture recognition applications. The breathable, hierarchically interlocked textile pressure sensor (PFPA), featuring a SWCNTs/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) dendritic structure combined with a PANI/PVA cylindrical array, exhibits remarkable properties. The dendritic electrodes, composed of SWCNTs and PVP in a 1:2 ratio, maintain optimal regularity. Meanwhile, the cylindrical PANI/PVA array is meticulously engineered with a radius of 200 μm, a height of 200 μm, and an inter-cylindrical spacing of 150 μm. The PFPA demonstrates an unprecedented ultrahigh sensitivity of 80.8 kPa −1 across a pressure range of 0–5 kPa, coupled with a rapid response time of 150 ms and minimal hysteresis of 16.1 %. The PFPA also demonstrates outstanding repeatability, with no significant performance degradation observed after 4000 cycles. By correlating the bending angles of finger joints with resistance changes, we successfully integrated these sensors into a glove, enabling precise gesture recognition. The multilayer SWCNTs/PVP/rGO dendritic and PANI/PVA cylindrical array pressure sensor exhibits superior sensing performance and accurate posture capture. This demonstrates its significant potential for applications in wearable electronics and intelligent devices, marking a substantial advancement in the field.

SWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites-modified microelectrode arrays for revealing locking relations between burst and local field potential in cultured cortical networks

Yaoyao Liu,Shihong Xu,Yu Deng,Jinping Luo,Kui Zhang,Yan Yang,Longze Sha,Ruilin Hu,Zhaojie Xu,Erwei Yin,Qi Xu,Yirong Wu,Xinxia Cai

Burst and local field potential (LFP) are fundamental components of brain activity, representing fast and slow rhythms, respectively. Understanding the intricate relationship between burst and LFP is crucial for deciphering the underlying mechanisms of brain dynamics. In this study, we fabricated high-performance microelectrode arrays (MEAs) using the SWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites, which exhibited favorable electrical properties (low impedance: 12.8 ± 2.44 kΩ) and minimal phase delay (−11.96 ± 1.64°). These MEAs enabled precise exploration of the burst-LFP interaction in cultured cortical networks. After a 14-day period of culture, we used the MEAs to monitor electrophysiological activities and revealed a time-locking relationship between burst and LFP, indicating the maturation of the neural network. To further investigate this relationship, we modulated burst firing patterns by treating the neural culture with increasing concentrations of glycine. The results indicated that glycine effectively altered burst firing patterns, with both duration and spike count increasing as the concentration rose. This was accompanied by an enhanced level of time-locking between burst and LFP but a decrease in synchrony among neurons. This study not only highlighted the pivotal role of SWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS-modified MEAs in elucidating the interaction between burst and LFP, bridging the gap between slow and fast brain rhythms in vitro but also provides valuable insights into the potential therapeutic strategies targeting neurological disorders associated with abnormal rhythm generation.

A novel electrochemical sensor for detecting hyperin with a nanocomposite of ZrO2-SDS-SWCNTs as decoration

Shuo Li,Sheng Lei,Qian Yu,Lina Zou,Baoxian Ye

A novel high-sensitive electrochemical sensor with glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as support for hyperin determination is successfully designed and constructed, and the well-shaped nano-meter modified material is synthesized via a one-step and facile route. Functionalized with surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) are synchronously grafted with ZrO 2 nanoparticles to develop into the as-prepared nano-composite (ZrO 2 -SDS-SWCNTs). Compared to the previous reports related with hyperin detection, the linear range gets wider and detection limit (LOD) becomes lower with the aid of this novel nano-composite modified glassy carbon electrode (ZrO 2 -SDS-SWCNTs/GCE). The crystalline phases and functionalization of the preparation process has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) instrument analysis, respectively, and the micro-morphology of related modified materials is also visibly characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). In addition, electrochemical properties of the modified materials are comparably explored by means of impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammograms (CV). According to the established calibration curve under optimized condition, the peak current (Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signal) keeps a linear relationship with hyperin concentration in the ranges of 1.0 × 10 −9 − 3.0 × 10 −7 mol L −1 , meanwhile detection limit reaches as low as 5 × 10 −10 mol L −1 (S/N = 3). As for practical applications, the proposed sensor has also worked well on sensitive hyperin determination in real species Abelmoschus manihot.

Self-sensing coaxial muscle fibers with bi-lengthwise actuation

Lizhong Dong,Ming Ren,Yulian Wang,Jian Qiao,Yulong Wu,Jianfeng He,Xulin Wei,Jiangtao Di,Qingwen Li

Artificial muscle fibers as a promising biomimetic actuator are needed for such applications as smart soft robots, muscle function restoration, and physical augmentation. Currently developed artificial muscle fibers have shown attractive performance in contractile and torsional actuations. However, the contractile muscle fibers do not have the capability of stimulus-responsive elongation, and real-time identifying their contractile position by themselves is still challenging. We report herein the preparation of a Ti3C2Tx MXene/single walled carbon-nanotubes (SWCNTs)-coated carbon nanotube (CNT)@polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coaxial muscle fiber that integrates the important features of self-position sensing and bi-lengthwise actuation. The bi-lengthwise actuation is realized by utilizing the large expansion coefficient difference of PDMS in response to solvent and heat, which results in ∼5% maximum elongation by n-heptane adsorption and ∼19% maximum contraction by electric heating under the optimal conditions. Meanwhile, due to the piezoresistive effect of the MXene/SWCNTs layer, the resistance change of this coating layer is almost linearly dependent on the contraction of the coaxial muscle fiber, providing a function of real-time self-position sensing. Furthermore, an application of using a bundle of these multifunctional coaxial muscle fibers for a bionic arm has been demonstrated, which provides new insights into the design of integrated intelligent artificial muscles with synergistic multiple functions.

A SERS biosensor with magnetic substrate CoFe2O4@Ag for sensitive detection of Hg2+

Xia Yang,Yi He,Xueling Wang,Ruo Yuan

Mercuric ion (Hg 2+ ) is one toxic metal ion existed in aquatic ecosystems which would seriously damage human central nervous system and other organs. So developing an approach to sensitively detect Hg 2+ in our living environment is urgent and important. In this work, a novel surface enhancement Raman spectrum(SERS) sensor is fabricated for high selective and ultrasensitive detection of Hg 2+ in aqueous solution, based on a stable thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T-Hg 2+ -T) structure and the π - π interaction between single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Herein, SWCNTs act as Raman labels to produce characteristic Raman peaks which can be a beacon to quantitative detect Hg 2+ . In the presence of Hg 2+ , the ssDNA can capture Hg 2+ forming T-Hg 2+ -T structure, which makes SWCNTs leave the hot spots of the SERS-based biosensor. With this design, the Raman intensity of SWCNTs decreased with the increasing concentration of Hg 2+ . At the same time, CoFe 2 O 4 @Ag as active SERS substrates can effectively enhance sensitivity and uniformity of the biosensor through aggregation by magnet. Under optimal conditions, this proposed biosensor can detect Hg 2+ at a range from 1   pM to 100   nM with a detection limit of 0.84   pM. With the advantages of good sensitivity, selectivity, simplicity and rapidity, the biosensor is potentially suitable for monitoring of Hg 2+ in environmental applications.

Real-time monitoring of 5-HT release from cells based on MXene hybrid single-walled carbon nanotubes modified electrode

Jiang Mengyuan,Tian Liang,Su Mengjie,Cao Xiaoqing,Jiang Qiyu,Huo Xiaolei,Yu Chunmei

Serotonin (5-HT) is an essential inhibitory neurotransmitter in vivo that is critical for interneuronal communication of the nervous system. Herein, we constructed an electrochemical cell-sensing platform for 5-HT detection based on MXene/single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) nanocomposite. The one-dimensional SWCNTs with good electrical conductivity are uniformly dispersed on the surface and intermediate layers of the two-dimensional MXene to form a tightly heterogeneous heterostructure. The synthesized MXene-SWCNTs could improve the stacking problem of MXene nanosheets and expose more active sites, effectively promoting the conductive properties and electrochemical activity of the composite. The fabricated MXene-SWCNTs/GCE possessed outstanding detection capability for 5-HT with a wide linear range of 4 nM–103.2 μM and a low detection limit of 1.5 nM. Moreover, the sensor was further applied for the real-time monitoring trace amount of 5-HT releasing from different cell lines, which confirmed its promising applications in 5-HT related physiological and pathological fields. Graphical abstract MXene-SWCNTs/GCE was developed and applied for the real-time monitoring of trace amounts of 5-HT secreted from living cells.

SWCNTs-channeled MOF nanosheet membrane for high-efficient organic solvent nanofiltration

Mian Wu,Xixue Fu,Jing Li,Wenqian Zhao,Xiaobing Li

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) has become increasingly important in petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, demanding superior and robust membranes. 2D MOF nanosheets hold great promise in the preparation of OSN membrane. Nevertheless, the fabrication of defect-free 2D MOF membranes with robust mechanical strength is hampered due to the weak interlamellar interactions between MOF nanosheets. Herein, 2D MOF composite membrane for high-performance OSN application is fabricated through the assembly of copper 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (CuBDC) nanosheets and NH 2 -SWCNTs. Within this composite configuration, NH 2 -SWCNTs can shelter the defects between the adjacent CuBDC nanosheets, rendering CuBDC/CNTs composite membranes precise molecular sieving ability. Meanwhile, the nanochannels created by NH 2 -SWCNTs with low frictional coefficients on the internal surface promote the permeation of organic solvents. Moreover, the multiple interactions between CuBDC and NH 2 -SWCNTs improve the mechanical strength of composite membranes. Accordingly, the composite membranes display excellent rejections of dye molecules on the basis of size-sieving mechanism with superior methanol permeance of 1260 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , as well as steady congo red rejection at high trans -membrane pressure of 5 bar, demonstrating good pressure resistance of composite membranes. Moreover, the composite membranes exhibit outstanding stability against high-concentration feeds and long-term operation for 50 h, confirming excellent practicality in the purification of dyes from organic solvents. The design approach in this work may inspire the fabrication of other nanosheet-based membranes for high-efficient OSN.

Polypyrimidine/SWCNTS composite comprising Pt nanoparticles: Possible electrocatalyst for fuel cell

Baikeri Salamaiti,Maimaitiyiming Xieraili

The poly(9,9-dioctyl fluorine-alt-2-amino-4,6-pyrimidine) (oligomer) is used as an effective dispersant for single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and generates stable SWCNTs hybrid after elimination of the excess polymer. The covered polymers immobilized Pt nanoparticles onto the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by coordination between Pt and polymer and the amount of the loaded Pt on the hybrid was calculated to be 38.5 wt %. The average diameter of the Pt nanoparticles on the SWCNTs were about ∼4–5 nm and have a moderate electrochemically active surface area of 40.5 m 2 /g. These studies strongly imply the possible application of novel pyrimidine/carbon materials as catalyst supports in the electrodes of fuel cells.

Boosting the Electrochemical Performance of PI-5-CA/C-SWCNT Nanohybrid for Sensitive Detection of E. coli O157:H7 From the Real Sample

Wang Huan,Fan Yanmiao,Yang Qiaoli,Sun Xiaoyu,Liu Hao,Chen Wei,Aziz Ayesha,Wang Shenqi

Redox activity is an important indicator for evaluating electrochemical biosensors. In this work, we have successfully polymerized indole-5-carboxylic acid into poly-5-carboxyindole nanomaterials (PI-5-CA), using its superior redox activity, and introduced carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotubes (C-SWCNTs) to synthesize a composite material. Finally, a synthesized composite material was used for the modification of the glass carbon electrode to fabricate the PI-5-CA/C-SWCNTs/GCE-based immunosensor and was successfully applied for the sensitive detection of E. coli O157:H7. The fabricated immunosensor exhibited an outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward the detection of E. coli O157:H7 with a remarkably lowest limit of detection (2.5 CFU/ml, LOD = 3 SD/k, n = 3) and has a wide linear range from 2.98×101 to 2.98×107 CFU/ml. Inspired from the excellent results, the fabricated electrode was applied for the detection of bacteria from real samples (water samples) with a good recovery rate (98.13–107.69%) as well as an excellent stability and specificity. Owing to its simple preparation, excellent performance, and detection time within 30 min, our proposed immunosensor will open a new horizon in different fields for the sensitive detection of bacteria from real samples.
