Pressureless joining of SiC ceramic in oxidizing atmosphere using a SiC nanowires reinforced composite adhesive

Peisen Liu,Xukun Yang,Liwen Yan,Anran Guo,Jiachen Liu

Achieving high-temperature-resistant and high-strength connections of silicon carbide ceramics in an oxidizing atmosphere without pressure is an urgent challenge. A composite adhesive was innovatively designed using the polysiloxane as matrix and B 4 C, nano-silicon and LSAM glass-ceramics as fillers. The introduction of LSAM glass-ceramics enabled an excellent matching of the thermal expansion between the adhesive and the SiC. A strong interfacial bonding was formed at the bonded interface due to the dissolution-diffusion of Mg 2+ , Li + , [SiO 4 ] and [AlO 4 ]. Moreover, the SiC nanowires grown in-situ inside the adhesive effectively repaired the defects caused by the pyrolysis of adhesive matrix, substantially enhancing the high-temperature mechanical properties of the SiC joints. After the heat treatment at 1400 °C, the SiC joints bonded using the adhesive showed a room temperature shear strength of 97.2 MPa and a high temperature shear strength of 81.6 MPa at 1300 °C, providing a significant advantage over existing works.

Digital light processing of high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support modified by SiC whisker

Qianlong Fu,Yuting Ma,Juan Wang,Yongzhao Yang,Peng Wang,Shuang Li,Yang Zhao

High-purity SiC ceramic membrane has gained tremendous attention in the treatment of various corrosive wastewaters. Additive manufacturing technique makes it possible to fabricate high-purity SiC ceramic membrane with complex configurations. Here, we proposed a route for the preparation of high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support using digital light processing and SiC whisker reinforcement. With the increase of whisker content, the viscosity of SiC w /SiC photosensitive slurry increased due to the formation of whiskers agglomerations; the average pore size shifted from 3.15 μm to 1.35 μm with the occupation of large pores by SiC whiskers. In addition, the compressive strength of the ceramic support increased from 10.7 MPa to 16.7 MPa because of the decline in pore size and the toughening effects by SiC whiskers. So, the introduced SiC whiskers enhanced the pore connectivity and mechanical strength of the porous ceramics. This work provides a feasible path to manufacture high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support with complex configuration, high pore-connectivity and excellent mechanical properties.

Synthesis of SiC whiskers via catalytic reaction method in self-bonded SiC composites

Huifang Wang,Haijun Zhang,Yubao Bi,Haisheng Li,Yongfeng Chen,Quanli Jia

Catalyzed by in-situ formed Fe nanoparticles (NPs), 3C–SiC whiskers were prepared from expanded graphite and Si powders after firing at 1573 K for 3 h in Argon. The density functional theory calculations revealed that Fe catalysts facilitated the formation of SiC nucleus and the epitaxial growth of SiC whiskers via reducing the bonding strength in C C dimer as well as Si–O and C–O bonds. Moreover, using SiC, expanded graphite and silicon powders as starting materials Fe-catalyzed self-bonded SiC composites were fabricated. Lots of SiC whiskers were synthesized in the as-prepared composites, leading to remarkable enhancements in high temperature mechanical behavior , oxidation resistance and cryolite resistance of the self-bonded SiC composites.

Co-electrospun SiC nanoparticle-decorated SiC fiber hybrid materials towards highly effective and broadband electromagnetic attenuation performance

Yi Hou,Baijun Chen,Hui Zhang,Pengyu Wang,Zixin Wang,Zhiqiang Liu,Tiansheng Wang,Lixi Wang

High-temperature resistant performance for thermal end components has always been a key development direction in advanced microwave absorption materials. SiC fibrous materials could be served as the ideal candidate to meet the challenge of both lightweight and high temperature resistance. However, the relatively weak microwave attenuation capacity of pure SiC fibers greatly limit the further application. Herein, highly crystallized SiC nanoparticles (SiC np ) were decorated into the SiC fiber (SiC f ) matrix via co-electrospinning and high temperature pyrolysis. The resultant SiC np @SiC f composite fiber material possesses abundant heterogeneous interfaces to fascinate the dielectric loss, as well as the enhancement of conductivity loss. The optimized SiC np @SiC f sample pyrolyzed at 1300 °C exhibits a minimal reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.04 dB at 6.84 GHz, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaches as wide as 7.5 GHz at 2.7 mm. With the filler content of only 10 wt%, the prepared SiC np @SiC f hybrid material could be applied as highly efficient and broadband ceramic microwave absorber.

Strength degradation of SiC fibers with a porous ZrB2-SiC coating: Role of the coating porous structure

Binbin Wu,Na Ni,Xiaohui Fan,Xiaofeng Zhao,Ping Xiao,Fangwei Guo

ZrB 2 -SiC coatings with varied porous structures were deposited on SiC fiber tows using the sol-gel method and cured at 1400 ℃ in vacuum. Tensile strength of the coated SiC fibers were much lower than that of the uncoated fibers. The bimodal distribution in the Weibull plot of the coated SiC fibers demonstrated that the fracture of the coated fiber can be attributed to two types of defects: the porous structure of the coating and the fiber defects. Detailed morphology and microstructure characterization of the coating and fiber combined with strength calculation were carried out to investigate the individual contribution of the fiber defects and the porous coating layer respectively. The results revealed that apart from the fiber damage during the coating process the porous structure of the fiber coating has a non-negligible effect on the fiber strength, presumably due to a relatively strong bonding between the fiber and coating.

Microstructure evolution and isothermal oxidation properties of c-AlPO4 and SiC whisker co-modified mullite coated SiC-C/SiC composites

Dongmei Pu,Pengju Chen,Peng Xiao,Zhuan Li,Zeyan Liu,Yang Li

An oxidation protective c -AlPO 4 and SiC whisker co-modified mullite coating ( c -AlPO 4 -SiC w -mullite) on SiC coated C/SiC composites were manufactured by hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition accompanied by magnetic stirring. Phase composition of c -AlPO 4 -SiC w -mullite coatings on SiC coated C/SiC composites with different deposition time was detected by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), element distribution and microstructure were investigated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results show that a crack-free, dense and homogeneous coating was prepared by hydrothermal electrophoretic deposition method. The thickness, homogeneity and antioxidant properties of c -AlPO 4 -SiC w -mullite coating were improved with the extension of deposition time from 10 min to 30 min. The coating manufactured after deposition of 30 min showed smoothest surface and highest density, which can effectively protect C/SiC composites from oxidation for 160 h at 1773 K in air with a weight loss of 10.02 mg cm −2 . Microstructural characterization after oxidation indicated that the failure of the c -AlPO 4 -SiC w -mullite coating was due to the consecutive formation of penetrative micro-cracks and micro-holes.

Effect of the incorporation of SiC nanowire with double protective layers on SiC coating for C/C composites

Aolin Xie,Bei Zhang,Yicheng Ge,Ke Peng,Ping Xu,Xiaodong Wang,Zhirong Feng,Maozhong Yi,Zhe Zhou

To maintain the thermal stability of SiC nanowires during SiC coating fabrication process, carbon and SiC double protective layers were covered on the surface of nanowires. And SiC nanowires with double protective layers toughened SiC coating were prepared by pack cementation. The results showed that after introducing the SiC nanowires with double protective layers, the fracture toughness of the SiC coating was increased by 88.4 %. The coating protected C/C for 175 h with a mass loss of 3.67 %, and after 51 thermal shock cycles, the mass losses of the oxidized coating were 3.96 %. The double protective layers are beneficial to improve the thermal stability of nanowires, leading to good fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance of SiC coating. SiC nanowires consume the energy of crack propagation by fracture, pullout and bridging, leading to an increase in fracture toughness.

Advanced high-temperature-resistant silicate adhesive reinforced by intermetallic compounds for joining SiC/SiC composites

Jiaming Zhang,Xianqi Cao,Cheng Peng,Chao Wang,Chunhong Zhang,Lijia Liu,Jianwei Bai,Junqing Li

In this study, an advanced high-temperature-resistant silicate adhesive, SA-AN, was developed by using Ni 2 SiO 4 , Ti, ZrO and Si powders modified silica sol as resin matrix , Al powder and ZnO as curing agents for jointing SiC/SiC composites. The thermal and mechanical properties of SA-AN were evaluated. The structural evolution of SA-AN, the reaction process at the interface, and the fracture mode of the joint were comprehensively investigated. The adhesive was transformed into Al–Ni-rich intermetallic compound-reinforced ceramic composites at high temperatures. Moreover, interfacial reaction of adhesive with SiC/SiC substrate occurred and the resulting diffusion reaction layer effectively relieved the thermal stress between the adhesive and the SiC/SiC substrate. Due to the formation of intermetallic compounds and the occurrence of interfacial reaction, the mechanical properties and heat resistance of the joints were considerably improved. Tensile shear strength of the adhesive was 18.7 MPa after calcination at 600 °C and 17.9 MPa after calcination at 900 °C, which was 65.5% and 94.6% higher compared to the conventional silicate adhesive SA-A, respectively. After 50 cycles of RT-900 °C, tensile shear strength of SA-AN still achieved 10.3 MPa with a retention rate of 61.5%. Furthermore, the mixed fracture pattern of the adhesive joint containing SiC/SiC substrate damage was attained even at 1200 °C of calcination, indicating the effective adhesion at this temperature. As first reported in this study, SA-AN is an efficient high-temperature-resistant adhesive applicable for bonding SiC/SiC composites, which has wide application prospects in aerospace domain.

Excellent visible light absorption by adopting mesoporous SiC in SiC/CdS for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen generation

Han Xue,Wang Da,Guo Zhongnan,Huang Lin,Peng Yuan,Lin Jiawei,Yuan Wenxia

The SiC/CdS semiconducting composites have been reported to show excellent synergistic effect for the photocatalytic water splitting to produce H2 (J. Mater. Chem. A (2014) 2:6296–6300). In this work, the mesoporous SiC prepared via a one-step nanocasting process has been adopted to replace the commercial micro-SiC, to improve the weak light absorption of SiC which suppresses the photocatalytic activity in previous literature. It has been demonstrated that the mesoporous SiC/CdS composite with suitable coverage ratio of SiC (with the molar ratio of SiC:CdS as 1:1) shows stronger light absorption and enhanced charge transfer rate. In consequence, the hydrogen evolution rate reaches 952 μmol · h–1· g–1 in the absence of noble metal co-catalyst, which is two times of the micro SiC/CdS system. Our work provides an effective route to enhance the photocatalysis in SiC-based heterojunction materials. This strategy can also be extended in other Z-scheme photocatalytic systems.

Fabrication and performance of mini SiC/SiC composites with an electrophoresis-deposited BN fiber/matrix interphase

Bin Xu,Huiyong Yang,Ruiying Luo,Lianyi Wang,Juntong Huang,Dian Chen

The feasibility of fabricating a BN matrix/fiber interphase of SiC/SiC composites via electrophoresis deposition (EPD) was investigated based on the simplicity and non-destructiveness of the process and the excellent interfacial modification effects of BN. The BN suspension and SiC fiber surface properties were both adjusted to generate suitable conditions for the EPD process of the BN interphase. Next, the deposition dynamics and mechanism were studied under different deposition voltages and time, and the relationship between the deposition morphology of the BN interphase and mechanical properties of the fabricated mini SiC/SiC composites were also discussed. After oxidation at high temperature (600–1000 ℃), the mechanical properties of the mini SiC/SiC composites were studied to verify the oxidation resistance effect of the EPD-deposited BN interphase, whose oxidation resistance mechanism was briefly analyzed as well.

High-entropy (Ta0.2Nb0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Zr0.2)C-SiC Ceramics: Achieving Superior Ablation Resistance through SiC Particle Size Optimization

Tianzhan Shen,Cuiyan Li,Haibo Ouyang,Mengyao He,Sirui Wu,Li Wang,Qianqian Chen,Yulei Zhang,Jian Wei

To enhance ablation resistance in (Ta₀.₂Nb₀.₂Ti₀.₂Hf₀.₂Zr₀.₂)C–SiC (HEC–SiC) ceramics, the influence of SiC particle size on microstructure and ablation behavior was examined. With the addition of 20   wt% fine SiC particles, its relative density increases from 91.23% to 97.79%, and the grain size of the HEC phase decreased from 3.58 to 0.79 μm. The fine SiC particles facilitated the formation of a continuous SiC network, thereby enhancing the thermal conductivity from 6.94 to 22.35   W/mK. This enhanced thermal conductivity contributed to reducing the ablation temperature from 2358 to 1721 °C during the ablation. The HEC-SiC sample with 0.5 μm fine SiC particles added exhibits a mass and linear ablation rate of 0.05   mg/s and 0.67   µm/s. The superior ablation resistance can be attributed to the reduced ablation temperature, altering the preferential oxidation sequence. This change in preferential oxidation led to the formation of a compact oxide scale with a multi-layer structure.

Effects of h-BN/SiC ratios on oxidation mechanism and kinetics of C/C-BN-SiC composites

Fuhai Liu,Maozhong Yi,Liping Ran,Yicheng Ge,Zhe Zhou,Ke Peng

C/C-BN-SiC composite was prepared by ceramic slurry infiltration combined with resin impregnation and carbonization, and the matrix with continuous distributed self-healing phase was obtained. In this study, the kinetic characteristics and oxidation behavior of the composites with various h-BN/SiC ratios in the temperature range of 600∼1300°C were studied by combining the isothermal oxidation test with the kinetic model. The optimal h-BN/SiC ratio balances the thermal stability and fluidity of the oxidized product, which not only has high thermal stability and low oxygen permeability to acts as an oxygen diffusion barrier but also has a certain fluidity to seal defects.
