Efficient surface ionization and metallization of TFC membranes with superior separation performance, antifouling and anti-bacterial properties

Liang Shen,Ming Yi,Lian Tian,Fangqian Wang,Chun Ding,Shipeng Sun,Ang Lu,Li Su,Yan Wang

Membrane-based forward osmosis (FO) technology has attracted increasing interest in the field of water treatment due to its high economical and separation efficiency. However, the availability of a FO membrane with superior separation and antifouling properties is still the critical issue for its real application in wastewater purification. In this work, novel thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are developed by surface ionization with various metal ions and subsequent metallization with the assistance of pre-grafted polyethyleneimine (PEI) and N -containing organic phosphonic acid (OPA), where the latter provides abundant and stable complexing sites. The grafting of hydrophilic PEI/OPA and the attachment of silver atoms endow the resulting membrane a dual defensive and offensive functionality associated with anti-adhesive property and antibacterial activity, respectively. Compared with the control TFC membrane, the surface-modified membranes show significantly improved anti-adhesive property against bovine serum albumin (BSA) and antibacterial property against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria, and thereby improved antifouling property towards the local lake water. Additionally, compared with the silver-metalized TFC membranes prepared by the direct method or indirect PEI binding, the silver-metalized membrane prepared by the indirect OPA binding exhibits a much higher silver loading (34.38 μg/cm 2 ), as well as better, more stable and long-term antibacterial property. Moreover, compared with the control membrane, the modified membranes also have much higher water fluxes (87–141% increase) and comparable or even lower reverse salt fluxes. The influences of the metal ion type used for ionization and the method used for metallization are systematically investigated.

Comprehensive analysis of permeation resistance changes of the TFC RO/NF membranes during heat curing

Tong Wu,Liu-Kun Wu,Hai-Tao Xu,Zhen-Liang Xu,Yong-Jian Tang

The TFC RO/NF membranes are the predominant membranes applied in desalination , and heat curing is an essential step in its industrial production, which increases the polyamide cross-linking degree and facilitate packing but leads permeability decrease. Nevertheless, the mechanism of heat curing on TFC membranes permeation resistance changes is still ambiguous. Figuring it out will aid in crafting a more effective optimization strategy in high flux membrane preparation. Herein, we prepared a range of TFC RO/NF membranes with various monomer concentrations on different substrates and quantified the permeation resistance changes by a resistance-in-series model. For nascent TFC RO/NF membranes, the PA layer provided almost all permeation resistance. After heat curing, the substrate exhibited a marked increase in permeation resistance. The change in the permeation resistance composition was further exacerbated by the decrease in monomer concentration. For TFC NF membranes with heat curing, the proportion of substrate permeation resistance increased significantly, rising from 31.62 % to 75.05 %. This study made a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the permeation resistance in TFC RO/NF membranes caused by heat curing, enriched the insight into the impact of heat curing on TFC membranes, and helped to prepare TFC membranes with better desalination performance.

EVOH functionalized PE battery separator as the porous substrate for TFC organic solvent nanofiltration membranes

Guoke Zhao,Tian Zhong,Xinkai Li,Hao Yu,Guoyuan Pan,Yang Zhang,Yiqun Liu

Scholarly discourse surrounding the thin film composite organic solvent nanofiltration (TFC OSN) membrane field has largely been dominated by focusing on the optimization of the selective layer. However, this often leaves the porous support layer, with its innate solvent resistance, cost-effectiveness, and superior permeability, in the shadows. This study presents a novel OSN membrane utilizing a polyethylene (PE) battery separator as the porous substrate. The structural affinity between ethylene-vinyl alcohol and PE facilitates efficient hydrophilic modification, which allows for uniform and compact polyamide selective layer formation through interfacial polymerization. The HPE-NF-1.0 membrane exhibits rejections of 99.5 %, 96.7 %, 100 %, and 97.2 % for Methyl Orange, Rhodamine B, Congo red, and Rose Bengal, respectively. It also shows a solvent flux of 52.5 LMH in methanol and robust resistance against alcoholic solvents and DMF. Using PE as the porous substrate, we bypass intricate and time-demanding cross-linking processes and complex pore-preservation post-treatments, providing a simplified strategy for TFC OSN membrane fabrication.

Modification of polyamide TFC nanofiltration membrane for improving separation and antifouling properties

Li-Fen Liu,Xiang Huang,Xiao Zhang,Ke Li,Yan-Li Ji,Chun-yang Yu,Cong-Jie Gao

In this work, a dendrimer trimesoyl amide amine (TMAAM) monomer was proposed to be used as a key functional monomer to modify the conventional aromatic polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane, and a new kind of TMAAM-based semi-aromatic polyamide composite NF membrane was thus prepared by interfacial polymerization. The effects of the PIP/TMAAM ratio (PIP = piperazine) on the membrane chemical structure, surface properties and separation performances were investigated systematically. With the increase in TMAAM content loaded in the membrane, the water flux strongly increased but the salt rejection decreased only slightly. When the PIP/TMAAM ratio was 1, the membrane NF-2 exhibited a smoother and more hydrophilic surface, as a result of which it displayed an optimum separation performance for different valent salts. In addition, the TMAAM modified TFC membrane presented an extremely high rejection to negatively charged dye molecules and high permeation for monovalent salts, leading to good prospects for dye/salt separation application. Moreover, both the water flux and salt rejection of the TMAAM-based membrane were stable in a long-term running process, and the membrane showed a favourable anti-fouling property and efficient cleaning recovery. Therefore, this work provides a new type of semi-aromatic polyamide composite NF membrane fabricated by a facile and straightforward method via interfacial polymerization with high hydrophilicity, good stability and strong anti-fouling property.

A novel TFC-type FO membrane with inserted sublayer of carbon nanotube networks exhibiting the improved separation performance

Xinzhen Zhao,Jing Li,Changkun Liu

The purpose of this study was to reveal the effect of the sublayer structure on the separation performance of the thin film composite (TFC)-type forward osmosis (FO) membranes. A novel TFC-type FO membrane with a supporting layer of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) porous membrane, a sublayer of carbon nanotube (CNT) network and an active skin layer of polyamide (PA) was prepared by a simple filtration-assisted interfacial polymerization method. The results showed that the prepared FO membrane exhibited the improved separation efficiency, with twice the water flux of the FO membrane without this CNT sublayer. The characterization of the prepared FO membrane structure revealed that the presence of the CNT sublayer was favorable for providing a three-dimensional free space, which increased the effective area of the PA layer by optimizing the space structure underneath the PA layer. At the same time, the experimental results demonstrated the negative effects of the conventional supporting layer structure on the separation performance and concentration polarization of the FO membrane, and highlighted the important role of the sublayer structure between the active skin layer and the supporting layer for the performance improvement of FO membranes.

Investigation of forward osmosis performance and anti-fouling properties of the novel hydrophilic polymer brush-grafted TFC-type FO membranes

Lin Wang,Fuqing Ma,Jizhen Jia,Xiaobin Lei,Xinzhen Zhao,Changkun Liu

BACKGROUND The concentration polarization and membrane fouling are two important factors, which can greatly reduce the forward osmosis (FO) performance and the service life of membranes. Optimizing the supporting layer structure and improving the hydrophilicity of the supporting layer are effective means to improve the FO performance and the anti-fouling performance of thin-film composite (TFC)-type membranes. RESULTS A novel hydrophilic TFC-type FO membrane with a macroporous polymer-brush-grafted polysulfone (PSf) supporting layer was fabricated. The prepared TFC-type FO membrane (g-FO-3) showed remarkable FO and anti-fouling performance. The water flux of g-FO-3 (43.0 L m −2 h −1 ) was nearly 2.6 times the conventional TFC-type PSf-based FO membrane (16.8 L m −2 h −1 ) and 1.8 times the TFC-type FO membrane with macroporous PSf supporting layer but without polymer grafting (24 L m −2 h −1 ) in AL-DS mode (the active layer facing the draw solution), with water as the feed solution and 2 mol L −1 sodium chloride as the draw solution. In addition, the low J s / J w value of g-FO-3 indicated an excellent separation selectivity. Furthermore, the FO membrane kept a water flux recovery rate of 95% after the eight-cycle fouling tests. CONCLUSION The hydrophilic polymer-brush-grafted PSf macroporous supporting layer of the FO membrane provides a convenient and efficient means to improve the FO and the anti-fouling performance of the TFC-type FO membranes. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Evaluation of the ideal selectivity and the performance of selectrodialysis by using TFC ion exchange membranes

Wenguang Wang,Ru Liu,Ming Tan,Haixiang Sun,Q. Jason Niu,Tongwen Xu,Victor Nikonenko,Yang Zhang

The current methods for determination of the membrane specific permselectivity between two competing counter-ions are dependent on various factors, which hinder the comparison of ion selectivity of ion selective membranes . In this work, a new characteristic, “ideal selectivity” is suggested to be used for the evaluation of the specific permselectivity of monovalent selective membranes. Ideal selectivity is determined in a single electrolyte solution containing only one of the competing counterions. We show that this characteristic exhibits a stable value, which is independent from the molar fraction of ions in a solution. Thus, it may be directly used to predict the purity of a salt produced in a dynamic selectrodialysis (SED) process with a monovalent selective membrane. To elaborate this, thin film composite (TFC) cation exchange membranes were prepared with piperazine and trimesoyl chloride by interfacial polymerization. These membranes were compared with a commercial monovalent selective cation exchange membrane CIMS (ASTOM, Japan) in view of their permselectivity (Na + /Mg 2+ ) and the performance in SED. The results show that when the TFC membranes were applied in SED, the purity of Mg 2+ in the product reached 75%, which was higher than in the case of CIMS. Furthermore, ideal selectivity of those TFC and CIMS membranes were calculated and fitted with the experimental Mg 2+ purity. It was found that ideal selectivity linearly correlates with the product final purity. The extrapolation of the fitting line predicts that when ideal selectivity approaches to 2, SED process the purity could theoretically approach to 100% in the same experimental conditions. Therefore, ideal selectivity can be used to predict the separation efficiency and the final product purity of SED process.

Smart TFC membrane for simulated textile wastewater concentration at elevated temperature enabled by thermal-responsive microgels

Xuan Zhang,Shu Xiong,Chu-Xuan Liu,Liang Shen,Song-Lin Wang,Wan-Zhong Lang,Yan Wang

Substrate modification is advantageous to ameliorate the internal concentration polarization (ICP) phenomenon encountered by most thin-film composite (TFC) membrane in forward osmosis (FO) process, therefore promoting FO implementation to a large extent. Optimization of the intrinsic parameters of substrate (e.g. porosity and tortuosity) can generally be achieved by incorporating hydrophilic or pore-containing materials into the dope solution before the substrate fabrication. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate with embedded thermal-response poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels is employed for the construction of TFC-FO membrane, where the reversible shrinkage of PNIPAM microgels brings about a lower tortuosity and a higher porosity of the substrate at higher operation temperature, thereby mitigating the ICP impact of the TFC-FO membranes significantly. Effects of PNIPAM content on the properties of the substrates and the resultant polyamide (PA) layer, as well as the corresponding performance of the TFC-FO membranes were comprehensively investigated. The benchmarking shows that, TFC membrane with PNIPAM-modified substrate exhibits remarkably improved water flux of 40.2 L·m −2 ·h −1 and a reduced reverse salt flux of 10.1 g·m −2 ·h −1 , with DI water as feed (50 °C) and 1 M NaCl as draw solution (ambient temperature), which suggests its great potential for treating feed solution with relatively high temperature in the practical applications, for instance, the dyestuff wastewater enrichment.

Engineering novel high-flux thin-film composite (TFC) hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes via a facile and scalable coating procedure

Chuanfeng Wang,Yingbo Chen,Xiaoyu Hu,Pengfei Guo

A novel defect-free polyamide/(polyether sulfone/poly(vinylidene fluoride)) PA/(PES/PVDF) thin-film composite (TFC) hollow fiber membrane (HFM) with desirable separation characteristics were developed through a facile and scalable coating procedure. By the introduction of piperazine (PIP) monomers into the PES coating solutions, the functional monomer-enriched PES coating layer was formed on the shell side of porous matrix-reinforced hollow fiber (HF) support through phase inversion process. Subsequently, PIP and TMC was interfacial polymerized during the fiber coating line to form a thin and defect-free polyamide (PA) functional layer for TFC HFM with high water permeability. Furthermore, the introduction of aqueous monomers only into the PES layer allowed economizing the cost of membrane manufacturing compared with bulk modification of the membrane substrate. Interestingly, the formation of bowl-like structures endowed the separation layer with higher permeation surface area and thus favored high water permeability. On combining these separation features, the optimized TFC membranes presented a high pure water permeability (PWP) of 13.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , approximately twice than that of conventional TFC membrane, with a satisfying Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 98.2%. Moreover, the PA/(PES/PVDF) TFC HFM exhibited excellent stability, backwash ability and anti-fouling ability, suggesting its huge potential for the water purification . Compared with the conventional two-step IP process on flat sheet membrane , the in-situ IP procedure performed on HF greatly simplifies the manufacturing process , shortens the production period and reduces monomer usage while the high packing density and great surface area per unit volume are obtained. This work may provide a simple and economical strategy for engineering high-performance TFC HFM.

Surface Modification of a Thin-Film Composite (TFC) Nanofiltration Membrane with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) for Efficient Dye–Salt Separation

Jian Li,Pei Xiao,Jie Yu,Lei Li,Yiyun Zhang,Yun Ma,Fei Liu,Yi Li

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is attractive in desalting and concentrating dyeing wastewater in the textile industry. A highly efficient NF membrane is critical in reducing the cost of the process. Here, a facile and reliable approach to prepare an NF membrane for the selective separation of dye/salt is proposed by surface grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) on a fresh polyamide (PA) layer after interfacial polymerization (IP). A thin layer of APTES with a thickness of ∼64 nm was found successfully covalently bonded onto the PA surface via esterification and amidation reactions. The thin-film composite (TFC)-1.0 membrane grafted with 10% APTES achieved a high water permeance of 44.8 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, which was 4.7 times higher than that of the control TFC membrane. Interestingly, the rejection of monovalent salt (NaCl, 11.5%) and divalent salt (Na2SO4, 17.2%) decreased significantly, while the rejection for different dyes (Congo red, reactive blue-19, Coomassie blue G-250, and methyl blue) remained over 99.0%. These noticeable changes in separation performances could be attributed to the large pore size of the active layer, resulting from the interference of APTES on the post-cross-linking of a PA network. The poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) filtration experiments confirmed that the mean pore size of the membrane was enlarged significantly from 0.51 to 1.17 nm after surface modification. Finally, the modified membrane showed good long-term stability and excellent separation efficiencies in fractionation of a high salinity Congo red/NaCl (0.2/50 g L–1) mixture. Overall, this work provides a practical strategy to prepare a permeable and selective NF membrane for dye and salt separation by surface grafting of the nascent PA layer.

Mechanism of surfactants optimizing TFC membrane performance

Yingsong Liu,Chenshuo Wang,Xieyang Xu,Huijun Yu,Chunhui Wang,Liwei Wang,Peidong Su,Jianbing Wang

Interfacial polymerization (IP) is a conventional method for fabricating thin film composite (TFC) membranes for reverse osmosis (RO). Surfactant assembly regulated interfacial polymerization (SARIP) can effectively improve the performance of membranes. However, the mechanism of the impact of the SARIP method on membrane performance is still unclear. In this work, we added a series of surfactants to fabricate TFC membranes, and the multiple roles of surfactants were summarized: (1) reducing interfacial tension to shape a rougher initial polyamide (PA) layer; (2) adjusting the pH of the aqueous solution to control interfacial polymerization reactions; (3) stabilizing the nanobubbles generated by CO 2 release to shape the voids in the PA layer; and (4) promoting the diffusion of m-Phenylenediamine (MPD) into the organic phase to enhance the supply of reactive monomers. With the molecular dynamic simulations, we revealed the mechanism by which surfactants regulate the morphology of the PA layer, discovered the connection between various effects of surfactants and membrane performance. These insights help overcome the long-standing permeability-selectivity trade-off in desalination membranes and are crucial for developing high-performance reverse osmosis membranes for more efficient desalination and water reuse.

Biogenic silver nanocomposite TFC nanofiltration membrane with antifouling properties

Shasha Liu,Manying Zhang,Fang Fang,Li Cui,Junjie Wu,Robert Field,Kaisong Zhang

Biofouling is still a major obstacle hindering wider application of thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes in the water industry. One of the practical strategies to reduce biofouling is to develop novel antibiofouling membrane materials. Well-dispersed biogenic silver nanoparticles with a diameter of ~6 nm (Bio-Ag0-6) were first immobilized in the selective layer of TFC nanofiltration membranes. Different dosages of Bio-Ag0-6 were added in the aqueous solution during the interfacial polymerization of tetraethylenepentamine and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC). Improved properties of Bio-Ag0-6 /TFC membranes were systematically investigated. When the concentration of Bio-Ag0-6 increased from 0 to 0.05 wt.% in aqueous solution, the water flux of TFC membranes increased from 7.31 to 13.76 Lm−2 h−1 while maintaining the rejection of Na2SO4 at a relatively high level. The addition of Bio-Ag0-6 also enhanced the hydrophilicity of Bio-Ag0-6/TFC membranes in comparison with the bare TFC membranes. All Bio-Ag0-6/TFC membranes exhibited an obvious antibacterial ability to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Moreover, the Bio-Ag0-6/TFC membranes showed the property of a low silver leaching rate in both the static immersion and the filtration systems. It demonstrated that the embedded Bio-Ag0-6 in TFC membrane via interfacial polymerization improved the performance of the TFC nanofiltration membrane.
