Functionalization of Zr@FMA with phosphonic acid groups for efficient separation of Th(IV) from aqueous solutions

Jing Xiao,Linshan Peng,Ailan Ouyang,Xin Mo,Yiping Yao,Chunyan Wang,Chunpei Yan

A phosphonate-functionalized Zr@FMA material was prepared in this work as an adsorbent for the efficient recovery and enrichment of Th(IV) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent, prepared by functionalizing Zr@FMA with alendronate sodium (ALS), a well-known active bisphosphonate, demonstrates good water stability and a large surface area, making it suitable for the separation and enrichment of Th(IV) in aqueous solutions. A comparison of the adsorption behavior of Th(IV) on Zr@FMA-ALS with the unfunctionalized Zr@FMA reveals that the introduction of phosphonate groups significantly enhances the maximum adsorption capacity and rate of Zr@FMA-ALS. The adsorption data aligns well with the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a uniform distribution of Th(IV) on the adsorbent surface in a monolayer coverage. Thermodynamic analysis indicates an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. Zr@FMA-ALS also shows excellent selectivity for Th(IV) over other metal ions in mixed solutions. Insights into the adsorption mechanism are provided through SEM, XPS, and FT-IR analyses, indicating that ALS molecules play a crucial role in capturing Th(IV) on the surface of Zr@FMA-ALS.

Efficient removal of radioactive Th(IV) and U(VI) from rare earth leaching solution using HDES

Lei-Tao Sha,Qiang Wu,Yi-Fan Zhang,Wei-Jia Wang,Fei Wu,Qing-Gang Huang,Ze-Yi Yan

The hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) with low viscosity, density and environmental friendliness have been prepared and characterized based on trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) and N,N -dihexyl succinamic acid (DHSCA), which were used as both extractant and organic phase for highly efficient removal of radioactive elements of U(VI) and Th(IV) from rare earth (RE) leaching solution. The extraction efficiency of U(VI) and Th(IV) exceeded 99 % by a single stage extraction. Benefiting from the blocking effect of hydrogen bonding on P = O and the good affinity of DHSCA and TOPO for actinides, the present HDES exhibited the excellent extraction selectivity for U(VI) and Th(IV) over Fe(III), Al(III), Mg(II), Ca(II) and RE(III). Even after seven extraction-stripping cycles, the prepared HDES could still effectively remove radioactive U(VI) and Th(IV) from RE leaching solution. The co-extracted U(VI) and Th(IV) was further separated and enriched by two successive stripping steps. Using the slope analysis, 31 P NMR and FT-IR spectra, the stoichiometry of extracted species and the extraction mechanism of HDES to Th(IV) and U(VI) were evaluated. Due to the superior extraction efficiency, excellent environmental compatibility and sustainability, the present approach offers a practical alternative for removal of radioactive elements from rare earth minerals.

Magnetic Th(IV)-ion imprinted polymers with salophen schiff base for separation and recognition of Th(IV)

He F. F.,Wang H. Q.,Wang Y. Y.,F Wang X.,Zhang H. S.,Li H. L.,Tang J. H.

A new complex of N , N ′-bis(3-allyl salicylidene) o -phenylenediamine and thorium(IV) (Th(IV)) was synthesized and used as the functional monomer for a novel Th(IV) magnetic ion-imprinted polymer; this polymer was synthesized using a surface imprinting technique that included the modified magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particle and used tetraethyl orthosilicate, 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane and maleic anhydride in the process. The magnetic polymer was characterized using FT-IR, and powder- and single crystal-XRD. The behavior of Th(IV) was investigated using batch experiments. At pH 4.5, the uptake capacity of this adsorbent and that of the non-imprinted polymer was 42.54 and 14.10 mg g −1 , respectively, and the relative selectivity coefficient values of the synthesized adsorbent for Th(IV)/La(III), Th(IV)/Ce(III), Th(IV)/Nd(III), and Th(IV)/U(VI) were 82.2, 93.1, 21.0 and 62.4 times greater than that of the non-imprinted matrix, respectively. In addition, the Th(IV) adsorption process using Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIP follows pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters also suggest that the adsorption of Th(IV) onto Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -IIPs was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

Th(IV) adsorption onto titanium tetrachloride modified sodium bentonite

Xiong Xiao Hong,Yuan Ya Hong,Huang Bin,He Min,Chen Huai,Luo Yi Chao,Zhu Ye An,Luo Tai An,Chen Quan Shui

Ti(OH) 4 and TiCl 4 modified bentonite (Ti–Na-bent) were applied in the removal of Th(IV) from aqueous solution. Effect of different factors such as pH, contact time, temperature, initial concentration of Th(IV) and efficiency of them for thorium adsorption are investigated. Ti–Na-bent showed high adsorption capacity (q m  = 231.37 mg/g) and quick adsorption kinetics at lower pH. The adsorption mechanisms involved are: (1) Th 4+ , [Th(OH) 4− n ] n + complexed on the outer-sphere of Na-bent and Ti–Na-bent. (2) Ion exchange between Th 4+ , [Th(OH) 4− n ] n + and exchangeable cations of Na-bent and the H on the hydroxyl group of Ti(OH) 4 . Ti–Na-bent manifested high adsorption capacity for Th(IV), good acid resistance and long-term adsorption stability.

Adsorption characteristics of Th(IV) ions on reduced graphene oxide from aqueous solutions

Ning Pan,Jianguo Deng,Debin Guan,Yongdong Jin,Chuanqin Xia

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) prepared by the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) using thiourea dioxide (TUD) was examined for the adsorption of Th(IV) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption of Th(IV) on RGO as a function of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, the Th(IV) initial concentration and temperature was investigated through batch adsorption experiments. The results showed that the adsorption behavior of Th(IV) on RGO followed the pseudo-second order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity was calculated to be 0.21   mmol Th/g RGO at 298.15   K. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters (Δ H 0   =   4.32   kJ/mol, Δ S 0   =   69.47   J/mol   K and Δ G 0   =   −16.39   kJ/mol at 298.15   K) indicated that the adsorption process was a feasible, spontaneous and endothermic in nature.

The separation of Th(IV)/U(VI) via selective complexation with graphene oxide

Duo Jiang,Li Liu,Ning Pan,Fuqiang Yang,Shengke Li,Ruibing Wang,Ian W. Wyman,Yongdong Jin,Chuanqin Xia

The separation of Th(IV)/U(VI) is of great importance in the development of thorium-based reactors. Here, we report our studies of Th(IV)/U(VI) separation by graphene oxide (GO). Firstly, variation of media conditions such as the pH, contact time, ionic strength, as well as the presence of different anionic ligands were conducted. The results showed that GO exhibited great selectivity for Th(IV) and the separation factor of Th(IV)/U(VI) reached as high as 36.3 after 2   h of contact at pH 3.8 and minimum ionic strength, and increasing the ionic strength caused the separation factor of Th(IV)/U(VI) to decrease. The presence of sulfate strongly influenced the separation factor of Th(IV)/U(VI) by GO. Secondly, competitive adsorption studies, as well as SEM–EDS, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS characterization were employed to gain further understanding of the mechanism of GO’s selective complexation of Th(IV)/U(VI). FT-IR and XPS characterizations showed that GO adsorbed Th(IV)/U(VI) through coordination of functional groups such as C O and C O on GO. The results of the competitive adsorption studies suggested that GO had a selective affinity for Th(IV) over U(VI). SEM–EDS exhibited a uniform distribution of both Th(IV) and U(VI) on GO. XRD indicated that the interlayer distances of the prepared GO, GO–Th(IV), GO–U(VI), and GO–Th(IV)/U(VI) were 8.24, 8.20, 7.86, and 8.26   Å, respectively. These results suggested that the adsorption of U(VI) caused a decrease of the interlayer distance of GO, which is probably inhibits GO’s ability to adsorb metal ions due to increased inter-planar repulsion and induced steric hindrance that limits adsorption of more metal ions. Therefore, a spatial feature based mechanism of GO was proposed.

Electrochemical behavior of Th(IV) on the bismuth electrode in LiCl–KCl eutectic

Shilin Jiang,Kui Liu,Yalan Liu,Taiqi Yin,Zhifang Chai,Weiqun Shi

The electrochemical behavior of Th(IV) on a bismuth electrode in LiCl–KCl eutectic was investigated by various electrochemical techniques , aiming at in-depth elucidation of basic electrochemical and thermodynamic properties of Th in molten salt . The results of cyclic voltammetry and coulometric titration indicated that the reduction of Th(IV) on a liquid Bi electrode occurred at −0.92 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and was a one-step process with four electrons transferred. In addition, thermodynamic properties of Th in liquid Bi medium were evaluated by coulometric titration method in the temperature range from 723 to 798 K. The redox peaks of Bi 2 Th intermetallic compound were detected at −1.13 and −1.05 V, and the corresponding Gibbs free energy of formation was measured by open circuit chronopotentiometry (OCP). Finally, galvanostatic electrolysis (GE) was conducted on a liquid Bi electrode to extract Th from molten salt at 773 K. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) were applied to characterize the composition and morphology of the products, and revealed the formation of Bi 2 Th intermetallic compound.

Adsorption of Th(IV) from aqueous solution by the graphene oxide nanoribbons/chitosan composite material

Wu Peng,Wang Yun,Li Yang,Hu Xuewen,Xiu Taoyuan,Yuan Dingzhong,Liu Yan,Wu Zhenyu,Liu Zhirong

In order to reduce the potential toxicity to the environment after treatment of radioactive waste water, an eco-friendly graphene oxide nanoribbons/chitosan (GONRs-CTS) composite was prepared and utilized for adsorption of Th(IV) from aqueous solution. The GONRs-CTS adsorbent was characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM, indicating that GONRs-CTS contains a large amount of oxygen-containing groups and chitosan was successfully attached to the GONRs surface. The Th(IV) adsorption on GONRs-CTS was endothermic and spontaneous, with the maximum single layer adsorption capacity was 140.6 mg g −1 at pH = 3.0, in the contact time of 12 h. The adsorption process was consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model.

Adsorption of Th(IV) in nitric acid medium by a new poly(4-vinylpyridine) resin

Zheng RuoChen,Mao GuoShu,Fu Zhihai,Zhang Xian,Yu ShengJie,Yue Yuanzhen,Li Jiayun

A new poly(4-vinylpyridine) resin was prepared and characterized. The adsorption of Th 4+ on resin was studied as a function of contact time, nitric acid concentration, metal ion impurity and initial Th 4+ concentration. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were analyzed. The results revealed that the adsorption equilibrium for the adsorption of Th 4+ on resin was reached within 30 min. The efficiency of Th 4+ adsorption on resin improves when the nitric acid acidity increases. The adsorption capacity of the resin increases with an increase in the initial concentration of Th 4+ . The thorium distribution coefficient increases with metal nitrate in the system.

Preparation of Fe3O4@SiO2@MnO2 microspheres as an adsorbent for Th(IV) removal from aqueous solution

Zhou Weini,Wang Hongqing,Hou Sanying,Wang Shiyv

A magnetic nano-composites Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MnO 2 were fabricated for efficient removal of Th(IV) from aqueous solutions, and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET, VSM, TGA and XPS. And the sorption of Th(IV) on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MnO 2 were investigated as a function of pH, adsorbent dosage and initial Th(IV) concentration. The results showed that the adsorption maximum was 53.19 mg g −1 for Th(IV) at pH = 3.5 and T  = 298 K. In addition, the adsorption kinetics followed the second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherm could be perfectly depicted by the Langmuir model. Finally, XPS analysis illustrated that the lattice oxygen (M–O) and the surface hydroxyl oxygen (M–OH) participated in adsorption. In brief, the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MnO 2 material could efficiently eliminate Th(IV) from aqueous solutions, which might become a promising material for adsorbing Th(IV) from environmental wastewater.

Probing the Influence of Acidity and Temperature to Th(IV) on Hydrolysis, Nucleation, and Structural Topology

Jian Lin,Meiying Qie,Linjuan Zhang,Xiaomei Wang,Yuejian Lin,Wei Liu,Hongliang Bao,Jianqiang Wang

Systematic control of the molar ratio between thorium hydroxides and selenic acid and their reaction temperature under hydrothermal conditions results in four novel thorium-based selenate complexes, namely, [Th8O4(OH)8(SeO4)6(H2O)16]·(SeO4)2·13H2O (Th-1), [Th8O4(OH)8(SeO4)8(H2O)13]·7H2O (Th-2), Th(OH)2(SeO4)H2O (Th-3), and Th3(SeO4)6(H2O)6·2.5H2O (Th-4), as well as the thorium mixed selenite selenate compound Th(SeO3)(SeO4) (Th-5). Smaller [H2SeO4]/[Th(IV)] ratio or lower temperature give rise to the formation of octameric [Th8(μ3-O)4(μ2-OH)8]16+ cores in Th-1/Th-2 and infinite [Th(μ2-OH)2H2O]2+ chains in Th-3, respectively. Increasing the [H2SeO4]/[Th(IV)] ratio or elevating the temperature generates a microporous (11.3 Å voids) open-framework Th-4, a monomeric thorium species without oxo/hydroxyl ligands, and a three-dimensional thorium structure Th-5. Formation of these compounds suggests that variables including acidity and temperature play a critical role in the hydrolysis and oligomerization of ThIV ions. Increasing acidity limits the deprotonation of water molecules and formation of nucleophilic hydroxo/oxo-aquo Th species, and high temperature appears to suppress the olation/oxolation hydrolysis reactions, which in both ways limit the formation of the thorium oligomers.

Adsorption of Th(IV) on glutaraldehyde cross-linked N-(4-Aminobenzoyl)-ʟ-glutamic acid modified chitosan

Luo Qingyun,Wang Chongshi,Zhu Wei,Yu Hongchao,Wang Chunyan,Chen Chuanhong

Due to its high adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency, polymer gel shows excellent performances in the treatment of wastewater containing thorium. In this work, glutaraldehyde cross-linked N -(4-Aminobenzoyl)-ʟ-glutamic acid modified chitosan (CCS-AGA) was used to adsorb Th(IV) ions from aqueous solutions for the first time. FT-IR and SEM results revealed the chemical structure and surface morphology of this material. The influence of solution pH, contact time and initial concentration of Th ions on the adsorption of Th(IV) by CCS-AGA was investigated. The experimental data suggest that the adsorption behavior of CCS-AGA could be accurately predicted by the Langmuir model. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of CCS-AGA for Th(IV) was 162 mg/g. Moreover, this material exhibited excellent reusability and adsorption selectivity for Th(IV).
