Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soils poses serious risks to ecosystem health and food safety, highlighting the urgent need for efficient and environmentally stable immobilization materials. In this study, sodium alginate-based rectorite microspheres (REC beads) and triethylenetetramine-modified rectorite microspheres (TETA-REC beads) were fabricated and applied for the immobilization of Cd(II) in contaminated soils. Structural characterization confirmed that the ionic cross-linking encapsulation process preserved the layered structure of rectorite, while TETA modification introduced abundant amino functional groups that enhanced the interaction between the material and Cd(II). Immobilization experiments demonstrated that both microspheres exhibited rapid and stable Cd(II) passivation performance, with TETA-REC beads showing significantly higher efficiency. The maximum removal efficiencies of water-soluble and available Cd(II) reached 83.87% and 93.33%, respectively. Sequential extraction analysis revealed that the microspheres effectively transformed labile Cd fractions, including exchangeable and water-soluble forms, into more stable species. Mechanistic investigations indicated that Cd immobilization was governed by a synergistic combination of interlayer ion exchange, physical adsorption within the porous alginate structure, and coordination complexation between Cd(II) and amino groups introduced by TETA. Furthermore, microbial community analysis showed that the remediation process promoted the recovery of soil microbial diversity and metabolic functions. The developed TETA-REC microspheres provide a promising strategy for the efficient immobilization of Cd in contaminated soils and offer potential for the sustainable remediation of heavy metal-polluted farmland.

Herein, we reported an ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of bismuth-modified rectorite with high visible light-induced photocatalytic activity. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FESEM, TEM, BET, and UV–vis DRS techniques. Two toxic and nonbiodegradable organic compounds, Rhodamine B (RhB) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), were chosen as the target pollutants to characterize the adsorption performance and photocatalytic activity. The results showed that the prepared samples possessed strong adsorbility and exhibited high efficient photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The excellent photocatalytic activity of bismuth-modified rectorite was ascribed to the strong adsorption ability, the interconnected heterojunction of Bi 2 O 3 and Bi 5 O 7 NO 3 , and the produced OH. Finally, the possible mechanism was presented.

An environmentally benign CuO-rectorite was prepared by calcining the co-precipitation product of Cu 2+ with an acid-activated rectorite at pH 6. It could be well dispersed in water and used as a co-catalyst with TEMPO to selectively aerobically oxidize alcohols to aldehydes. The conversion of most primary benzylic alcohols was very high under optimized conditions. Interestingly, the oxidation protocol also allowed highly selective transformation of benzylic alcohols containing a phenolic hydroxyl group into the corresponding aldehydes. Additionally, very little copper was leached from the catalyst during the catalytic reaction. CuO-rectorite could be reused by centrifugation and washed with acetonitrile and water. At the same time, its catalytic activity remained high.

This work found that rectorite (REC) has a good adsorption effect on cationic pollutants such as ciprofloxacin (CIP), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 79.73 mg/g for CIP. The zeta potential analysis showed that the electronegativity of the REC surface would be weakened after CIP adsorption under acidic conditions. Through adsorption kinetics, isotherm study, XRD, FTIR, and other characterizations, the phenomenon of reduced negative charge on the surface of REC adsorbed with CIP under acidic conditions was explained. Based on the Langmuir and Temkin models, the adsorption process of CIP on REC is a spontaneous endothermic adsorption process. The adsorption kinetics can be better described using a pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the adsorption rate is mainly controlled by chemical adsorption. The characterization further proved that REC adsorbed ciprofloxacin mainly through hydrogen bonding, cation exchange, and electrostatic gravitational interaction. CIP, as an emerging contaminant discharged into the water environment, will be harmful to the ecological environment and human health. Therefore, the utilization of REC for the removal of CIP from an aqueous solution has potential prospects.

The chitosan (CS)-organic rectorite (OREC) composites are prepared with the method of solution intercalation. Electrospun nanofibrous mats are made from intercalated CS-OREC composites at different mass ratios. The properties and structure of intercalated CS-OREC can be verified by
small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra reveal that OREC presents in the composite nanofibrous mats. The MTT assay indicates that the cytotoxicity
of the intercalated CS-OREC nanofibrous mats is low. Besides, the content of OREC in nanofibrous mats has a significant influence on the viability of cells. Antibacterial test confirms that OREC can increase the inhibition rate of the nanofibrous mats against Escherichia coli.

This study reports the preparation and properties of a chitosan (CS)–organic rectorite (OREC)/sodium alginate (SA) composite sponge. The novel sponge was fabricated by solution intercalation and chemical cross-linking techniques. The structure and composition of the CS/SA and CS–OREC/SA composite sponges were characterized by FE-SEM, FT-IR, XRD and EDX. The results showed that the polyelectrolyte with a highly cross-linked structure and uniform pore distribution could be obtained by mixing CS and SA with or without the addition of OREC into them. Besides, the low cytotoxicity and excellent antibacterial efficacy of the prepared CS/SA and CS–OREC/SA sponges were demonstrated by an MTT assay and an antibacterial assay. Moreover, the results of the hemostatic tests on ear-artery, ear-vein and liver injuries of rabbits showed that the addition of OREC into the CS/SA composite sponge significantly improved the hemostatic efficiency of the as-prepared sponge without compromising the biocompatibility and antibacterial property of CS. This study indicated that the CS–OREC/SA composite sponge had the potential to be a potent hemostat for controlling wound infection and bleeding in medical fields.

In this study, the magnetic modification of rectorite was conducted to enhance its regenerability and surface electronegativity. When using the raw rectorite, the removal rate of ciprofloxacin was 78 % and the recovery rate was only 26 % after six regeneration cycles. However, with magnetized modified rectorite (M-REC), the removal rate of ciprofloxacin was 97 % and the recovery rate exceeded 75 %. The magnetic properties, easy magnetic separation and enhanced surface electronegativity of M-REC were confirmed through SEM, TEM, VSM, XRD, BET and XPS characterization. After six regeneration recycles, the basic skeleton structure of M-REC remained largely unchanged, indicating that has excellent stability. Additionally, the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of M-REC were investigated, and the Langmuir model accurately described the adsorption isotherm. The adsorption kinetics data fit the pseudo-second order models. The adsorption rate was determined by the number of available adsorption sites on the M-REC surface, and the removal process was primarily driven by chemisorption. Therefore, M-REC is an environmentally friendly adsorption material with potential applications in environmental remediation.

Background The development of effective technologies for removing tetracycline (TC) from aquatic environments is crucial. In this study, the superior adsorption and separation properties of Fe-RASs for TC were investigated, and the removal mechanism of TC was proposed. Methods Fe-RASs were synthesized by metal modification methods (impregnation and co-precipitation) and iron valences (Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , and Fe 6+ ). The structure and physicochemical properties of Fe-RASs were characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, XPS, and VSM. The influence of pH and temperature on the adsorption characteristics, as well as the adsorption isotherm and kinetics was investigated. Significant findings Fe 6+ -RAS, prepared by pyrolysis following impregnation with K 2 FeO 4 , shows superior TC adsorption capacity (Q m : 191.32 mg/g), presenting an efficient and eco-friendly adsorbent. The adsorption mechanism mainly includes pore filling, surface complexation, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. Fe-RASs are easy to recover and reduce secondary contamination. In summary, this study realizes the conversion of solid waste into value-added products for environmental remediation, and is expected to offer valuable references on the synthesis method and appropriate iron sources for the pyrolysis of magnetic materials.

The demand for designing antibacterial materials was quite substantial in packing and biomedical materials fields. Chitosan had a wide utilization to satisfy this demand. In this study, by incorporating lysozyme (LY) – rectorite (REC) into chitosan films, the ultimately obtained hybrid films can own the enhanced antibacterial properties and still remains good mechanical properties . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that LY and REC could be homogeneously distributed in the CS films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) results verified that the LY-REC incorporation process was successful. Small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra revealed that some intercalation reactions occurred between CS chains and REC. The hydrophobic properties of the CS films were increased by the addition of LY and REC, determined by water contact angle measurement. In comparison with CS films, the mechanical properties of the composite films after adding LY-REC were reduced by 27.58%, but still maintained high tensile strength . Besides, the antibacterial properties of the films could be enhanced by introducing LY-REC. This method exhibited great application value in the food packaging fields.

Organic rectorite (OREC) was added in the quaternized chitosan (QC)/alginate (ALG) nanoparticles using an ionic gelation method to fabricate a controllable release system for proteins for the first time. The morphology of nanoparticles, the intercalated structure of OREC, bovine serum albumin encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release properties were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectra, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, small angle X-ray diffraction and size distribution analysis were performed to characterize the composite nanoparticles. With the addition of OREC, the encapsulation efficiency and the loading capacity of nanoparticles had increased from 21.2% to 44.9% and from 13.7% to 25.0%, respectively. In addition, the rapid initial release was inhibited successfully from 20.15% to 11.07% in stimulated gastric fluid and from 14.69% to 4.52% in stimulated intestinal fluid. The results verified that the addition of OREC could make these nanoparticles effective carriers to encapsulate drug and slow the drug controlled release of nanoparticles.

The anthropogenic release of highly toxic heavy metals into the environment presents a huge challenge for ecosystems and human society. Recoverable and efficient adsorption materials could be obtained by trapping inorganic adsorbents (e.g., TiO 2 nanoparticles and rectorite (REC)), in a natural polymer matrix. In this study, a series of cellulose-TiO 2 /REC composite nanofibrous mats were fabricated via electrospinning. The interactions between inorganic adsorbents and cellulose molecules improved the thermal stability , surface area, tensile strength and adsorption capacity of the mats. We focused on the adsorption of Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ from acidic solutions onto cellulose-TiO 2 /REC composite nanofibrous mats in multiple systems because the magnitudes of heavy metal concentrations in wastewater typically varied. The maximum total adsorption capacity of 69.81 mg/g was obtained by Cellulose-TiO 2 /REC 2:1 nanofibrous mats. The composite nanofibrous mats successfully trapped TiO 2 nanoparticles, and the obtained cellulose-TiO 2 /REC nanofibrous mats could be used to remove heavy metals from acidic wastewater.

The development of a facile method to fabricate eco-friendly and efficient adsorbents for removing phosphate from wastewater is urgently needed. In this study, a low-cost, eco-friendly, and high-performance composite, with highly dispersed lanthanum compounds (lanthanum oxynitrate and lanthanum oxycarbonate) on the two-dimensional (2D)-layered rectorite (REC) nanoclay , was synthesized via a one-pot calcination method. Lanthanum compounds-modified rectorite composite (La-REC) was analyzed to confirm the combination between lanthanum compounds and the surface of REC. La-REC perfectly followed the Langmuir-Freundlich model and exhibited a superior adsorption capacity of 147.6 mg P/g for phosphate, higher than that of both REC and La(OH) 3 . More importantly, it demonstrated high performance for phosphate adsorption within pH ranging from 4.0 to 7.0, and showed a high adsorption selectivity toward phosphate among coexisting ions during the adsorption process . La-REC could efficiently remove phosphate from real wastewater . Furthermore, lanthanum compounds and REC nanoclay had a synergistic effect of increasing the phosphate uptake. The mechanism of phosphate removal by La-REC was investigated, including ligand exchange , electrostatic attraction , complexation, and precipitation. Overall, La-REC provides feasibilities to synthesize the low-cost, eco-friendly, and high-performance adsorbents for phosphate removal , which can offer potential applications in phosphate adsorption for practical pollutant purification.
