Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) (EC 1.4.3.4) is primarily found in various organs of vertebrates, especially in secretory glands, the brain, and the liver. It also exists at lower levels in invertebrates and plants such as bean sprouts, where it catalyzes the metabolism of monoamine substances and plays important physiological roles. Its activity can reflect the degree of liver fibrosis. Moreover, abnormal MAO activity leads to disruptions in the transport of intracellular monoamine neurotransmitters, thereby contributing to the development of various diseases. Assay Principle: MAO catalyzes the deamination of monoamine substrates to produce corresponding aldehydes, which are further oxidized into acids. The substrate exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 360 nm, and the activity of MAO is calculated by measuring the rate of decrease in absorbance at 360 nm.
