The sulfur extracted from soil mainly exists in the form of SO₄²⁻ (sulfate). Sulfate ions react with Ba²⁺ (barium ions) to form a white precipitate of BaSO₄ (barium sulfate). By measuring the turbidity of this precipitate using the barium sulfate turbidimetric method, the content of available sulfur in the soil can be quantitatively determined.
