Chloride ions react with mercuric thiocyanate to form weakly dissociated mercuric chloride, simultaneously releasing an equivalent amount of thiocyanate ions. The released thiocyanate ions then combine with ferric ions (Fe³⁺) present in the reagent to form orange‑red ferric thiocyanate. This product exhibits maximum absorption at a wavelength of 480 nm, and its color intensity is directly proportional to the chloride ion concentration.
