Seliwanoff's Reagent is a classic chromogenic reagent for carbohydrate identification, prepared by dissolving resorcinol in dilute hydrochloric acid. It is used to distinguish ketoses from aldoses. Under acidic heating conditions, ketoses (e.g., fructose) undergo a condensation reaction with resorcinol to produce a red-colored product; aldoses react very slowly, yielding only a pale yellow or faint pink color, thereby enabling qualitative detection of ketoses. It is commonly used for carbohydrate component identification and qualitative screening of ketoses such as fructose in samples.
Note: This reagent contains concentrated hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive and irritant. Appropriate protective gloves should be worn during handling, and contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes must be avoided. Adequate precautions should be taken during heating reactions to prevent acid mist splashing.
