The oxidizing substances in the sample oxidize Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺; Fe³⁺ then reacts with xylenol orange to form a blue‑violet complex. This product exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 560 nm. By measuring the change in absorbance at this wavelength, the total antioxidant status of the sample can be characterized.
