Investigation of the preparation methods and mechanical properties of graphene nanoplatelets/α-SiC ceramic composites

Maohui Li,Mingjun Zhang,Bo Ma,Wenzhou Sun,Yanmin Wang,And Youjun Lu

While graphene is widely acknowledged for its potential in enhancing the toughness of ceramic composites, achieving substantial mechanical improvements through simple and scalable processing methods remains a challenge. This study demonstrates that minimal additions of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) can significantly enhance the fracture toughness of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics using pressureless sintering. The investigation focused on examining the influence of GNPs addition on the phase composition, porosity, mechanical properties, and microstructure of these composite ceramic materials. By incorporating only 1–3 wt.% GNPs into an α-SiC matrix, a remarkable 37.86% increase in fracture toughness (5.28 MPa·m1/2) is achieved at the optimal loading of 1 wt.%, surpassing the toughening efficiency typically reported for similar composite systems. Microstructural analysis revealed that the primary toughening mechanisms of GNPs in SiC involve pull-out and crack deflection. This study demonstrates GNPs combined with pressureless sintering can effectively unlock the toughness potential of SiC ceramics, providing a practical and scalable approach for industrial applications.

The thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of porous α-SiC ceramics bonded with Ti3SiC2 and β-SiC via low temperature in-situ reaction sintering

Zhaoxin Zhong,Biao Zhang,Jian Ye,Ye Gao,Qiang Liu,Zhiguo Zhang,Feng Ye

Porous SiC ceramics have recently attracted wide attention for their applications in the electrically heatable filter. Further improvement of the thermal and electrical conductivity without sacrificing permeability is a critical parameter for such applications. In the present work, porous SiC/Ti 3 SiC 2 ceramic composites with Ti 3 SiC 2 and micro/nano SiC have been prepared from TiC/Si/α-SiC mixtures at a low sintering temperature (1400 °C). Nano-laminated Ti 3 SiC 2 enhanced the electrical conductivity , while the good thermal conductivity was achieved through in-situ formed nano β-SiC and raw coarse α-SiC in the porous ceramics . Along with the increase of initial α-SiC particle size from 0.76 to 16.13 μm, the permeability, thermal and electrical conductivity improved due to the decreased porosity and increased pore size in porous SiC/Ti 3 SiC 2 ceramics. The results suggested that the decoupling of the electrical conductivity from the thermal conductivity could be tuned by adjusting the initial α-SiC particle size.

High efficiency microwave absorption properties of α−SiCp/α−SiCnw/SiO2/C composites with multi−interface hybrid SiC nanowires prepared by heterogeneous nucleation−growth mechanism

Jiabao Zang,Haifeng Li,Qingzhi Zhu,Ziheng Wang,Hubuli Bazaerbieke,Li Sun,Meijie Zhang

There are few reports about the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of α−SiC based composites, and almost all of them focus on β−SiC polymorphs. In this study, α−SiC p /α−SiC nw /SiO 2 /C hybrid composites (sample SiC−C1500) with heterostructure α−SiC nanowires (α−SiC nw ) of multiple interfaces 4H−SiC/6H−SiC/SiO 2 /C were successfully prepared using mixed powder (α−SiC+m−SiO 2 +C) as raw material based on the heterogeneous nucleation−growth mechanism, and their microwave absorption properties were investigated. Meanwhile, the samples SiC−V2150 and Si−C1500 were obtained by vacuum calcination (α−SiC+m−SiO 2 +C) at 2150 0 C and carbothermal reduction (Si+m−SiO 2 +C) at 1500 0 C, respectively, and their phase compositions were α−SiC p /C and β−SiC p /β−SiC nw /SiO 2 /C, respectively. The sample SiC−C1500 exhibited excellent EMW absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value of −18.37 dB at a thickness of 1.3 mm, and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) value of 4.9 GHz at a thickness of 1.5 mm. In contrast, the EMW absorption performance of the samples SiC−V2150 and Si−C1500 was obviously poor, which was consistent with the RCS (Radar Cross−Section) simulation results. The formation of α−SiC p /α−SiC nw /SiO 2 /C composites (sample SiC−C1500) containing 4H−SiC/6H−SiC/SiO 2 /C multi-interfaces heterostructure α−SiC nanowires (α−SiC nw ) was analyzed. The excellent EMW absorption performance of SiC−C1500 sample could be attributed to the effective regulation of α polymorphs, nanowire heterostructure, multi−component hybridization. This study supplies a helpful experience and reference for improving the high temperature EMW absorption performance of SiC matrix composites.

Synthesis of monolithic SiC aerogels with high mechanical strength and low thermal conductivity

Zhimin An,Rubing Zhang,Daining Fang

The monolithic silicon carbide (SiC) aerogels were converted from catechol-formaldehyde/silicon composite (CF/SiO 2 ) aerogels through carbothermal reduction and calcination . In the process of preparing the CF/SiO 2 aerogel, a new method was proposed to produce more silicon carbide and enhanced the mechanical properties of the SiC aerogel. This method was realized by adding an alkaline silica sol as supplemental silicon source. The principle process of CF/SiO 2 aerogels converting to SiC aerogels was discussed based on experiment and results analysis, while the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of the prepared SiC aerogels were investigated. The results show that the as-synthesized SiC aerogels consist of β-SiC and a small amount of α-SiC nanocrystalline . It possessed a mesoporous structure and a low thermal conductivity 0.049 W/(m∙K), a relatively high compressive strength 1.32 MPa, and a relatively high specific surface area 162 m 2 /g. Due to their outstanding thermal and mechanical properties, the prepared SiC aerogels present potential applications in thermal insulation field, such as space shuttles and aerospace carrier thermal protection materials.

Fabrication and mechanical properties of graphene nanoplatelets-reinforced β/α-SiC composite ceramics

Maohui Li,Mingjun Zhang,Heng Wang,Bo Ma,Wenzhou Sun,Yanmin Wang,Youjun Lu

The inherent brittleness and limited fracture toughness of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics pose significant challenges to their structural reliability in advanced applications. This study proposes a phase-interface engineering strategy to overcome these limitations by synergistically incorporating graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and a β-SiC phase into an α-SiC matrix. GNPs/β/α-SiC composite ceramics were fabricated via pressureless sintering at 2120°C, with systematic variation of GNPs content (1–3 wt.%) against a fixed 10 wt.% β-SiC addition. The effects of GNPs on the phase evolution, densification behavior, and mechanical properties were comprehensively investigated. Results indicate that GNPs incorporation reduced bulk density and increased open porosity. Notably, all key mechanical properties—flexural strength, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness—exhibited a distinct maximum at an optimal GNPs content of 1 wt.%. The composite with 1 wt.% GNPs demonstrated a superior combination of properties: a fracture toughness of 5.34 MPa·m1/2, a flexural strength of 451 MPa, and a hardness of 23.5 GPa. Microstructural analysis revealed that the remarkable enhancement originates from a synergistic toughening mechanism, where GNPs interact with the elongated β-SiC grains to promote multi-scale energy dissipation through crack deflection, bridging, and interface debonding. This work not only presents a high-performance composite but also elucidates a microstructural design principle for developing damage-tolerant ceramic materials.
