Enhanced catalytic activity and CO2 tolerance of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ cathode for solid oxide fuel cells via incorporation of Ce0.8Pr0.2O1.9 nanosheets

Hao Lou,Baixi Xia,Chuangang Yao,Haixia Zhang,Zhe Zhang,Yuxi Sun,Jingyi Ding,Li Zhang,Xiaoshi Lang,Kedi Cai

Advancing solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) significantly relies on the development of cathode materials that exhibit both high performance and stability. This study introduces a novel heterostructure composite cathode by combining La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3- δ (LSCF) particles with Ce 0.8 Pr 0.2 O 1.9 (CPO) nanosheets through hydrothermal synthesis. The LSCF-CPO composite demonstrates remarkable enhancements in both catalytic activity and CO 2 resistance. The distinctive nanosheet morphology of CPO and the extensive heterointerfaces facilitate superior charge transfer and accelerate the processes of oxygen adsorption and dissociation. The incorporation of CPO nanosheets reduces the thermal expansion of LSCF and alters the oxygen ion transport properties, thereby establishing a three-dimensional network for enhanced ion conduction. At 750 °C, the single cell using the LSCF-10CPO cathode achieves a remarkable peak power density of 1179 mW cm −2 , representing a notable 48 % enhancement over the single-phase LSCF. Additionally, the LSCF-10CPO exhibits exceptional CO 2 tolerance. This research offers valuable insights into the design of next-generation SOFC cathodes with enhanced performance and stability, paving the way for future advancements in energy technology.

A highly active and CO2-tolerant perovskite cathode for solid oxide fuel cells operating below 700 °C

Xiaona Zhang,Tian Xia,Qiang Li,Liping Sun,Lihua Huo,Hui Zhao

Exploring high-performance and durable cathode materials can accelerate the commercialization of intermediate/low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Herein a highly active and CO 2 -tolerant perovskite cathode, Pr 0.94 Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 Co 2 O 5+ δ (P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C), is well-designed and developed for SOFCs operating below 700 °C. It is discovered that cation-ordered/disordered perovskite phases co-exist in P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C, induced by calcium doping. As a result, the P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C cathode exhibits a polarization resistance as low as 0.022 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in air. When tested under realistic conditions, an anode-supported single cell delivers a peak power density of 1202 mW cm −2 at 700 °C, along with excellent long-term stability for 120 h. Furthermore, the CO 2 tolerance of P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C is investigated in CO 2 -containing atmosphere, demonstrating an initial polarization resistance of 0.035 Ω cm 2 in air with 10 vol% CO 2 at 700 °C, which increases to 0.053 Ω cm 2 after a 13 h operation. The degradation rate is merely ∼1/4 of that for the state-of-the-art Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3- δ (BSCF) cathode. The outstanding ORR kinetics and durability highlight the potential of P 0.94 B 0.7 Ca 0.3 C as a promising cathode candidate for SOFCs operating below 700 °C.

A-site high entropy and B-site medium entropy double perovskite structure cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells

Yawen Wang,Xinyue Zhang,Mengyu Yang,Shilun Fu,Qingjun Zhou

High entropy solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode materials with a double perovskite structure have attracted considerable attention due to their unique multi-component design and the complex interactions among constituent elements, which endow them with exceptional catalytic performance. We report a double perovskite cathode material, La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 BaCo 0.7 Fe 0.7 Ni 0.4 Cu 0.1 Zn 0.1 O 5+δ (LPNSGBCFNCZ), featuring a high-entropy design at the A-site and a medium-entropy design at the B-site, and systematically investigate its structure, electrochemical performance and CO 2 tolerance. The results demonstrate that LPNSGBCFNCZ exhibits excellent redox activity, with an area-specific resistance of only 0.07 Ω·cm 2 at 800 ℃. Furthermore, compared with the non-entropically designed PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ , LPNSGBCFNCZ exhibits superior thermal expansion properties and significantly enhanced tolerance to CO 2 . This performance improvement is attributed to the dual-entropy design of the A and B-sites: the high entropy at the A-site effectively suppresses the formation of BaCO 3 in CO 2 atmospheres, while the medium entropy at the B-site reduces the thermal expansion coefficient by lowering the Co content. This study indicates that LPNSGBCFNCZ is a highly promising SOFC cathode material, further validating the feasibility and effectiveness of the high-entropy strategy in the development of SOFC electrode materials.

An excellent bismuth-doped perovskite cathode with high activity and CO2 resistance for solid-oxide fuel cells operating below 700 °C

Dehong Huang,Shanglan Wu,Yi Wang,Zhenbao Zhang,Dengjie Chen

Lowering the operating temperatures of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is critical, although achieving success in this endeavor has proven challenging. Herein, Bi 0.15 Sr 0.85 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ (BiSCF) is systematically evaluated as a carbon dioxide (CO 2 )-tolerant and highly active cathode for SOFCs. BiSCF, which features Bi 3+ with an ionic radius similar to Ba 2+ , exhibits activity (e.g., 0.062 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C) comparable to that of Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ and PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ , while demonstrating a considerable advantage over Bi-doped cathodes. Moreover, BiSCF exhibits long-term stability over a period of 500 h, and an anode-supported cell with BiSCF achieves a power density of 912 mW cm −2 at 650 °C. The CO 2 -poisoned BiSCF exhibits quick reversibility or slight activation after returning to normal conditions. The exceptional CO 2 tolerance of BiSCF can be attributed to its reduced basicity and high electronegativity , which effectively restrict surface Sr diffusion and hinder subsequent carbonate formation. These findings highlight the substantial potential of BiSCF for SOFCs operating below 700 °C.

Lithium doping enhanced ORR kinetics and CO2 tolerance of iron-based double perovskite cathode for solid oxide fuel cells

Hai-Xia Zhang,Chuan-Gang Yao,Zhe Zhang,Bai-Xi Xia,Yu-Xi Sun,Fa-Nian Shi

Fe-based double perovskites exhibit significant potential as cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) owing to their affordability, moderate thermal expansion, and impressive stability. Nevertheless, their practical utility has been constrained by their comparatively lower oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity . In this study, for the first time, lithium (Li) was employed as a dopant to improve the ORR activity of the Fe-based double perovskite PrBaFe 2 O 5+δ (PBFO). The results indicated that the ratios of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and O ads /O lat were effectively tuned by incorporating Li at Ba-sites of PBFO. Consequently, the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen, along with the charge transfer processes were regulated significantly, resulting in an increase in ORR kinetics and improved CO 2 resistance. At 800 °C, PrBa 0.9 Li 0.1 Fe 2 O 5+δ (PBLFO) demonstrated an R p of 0.072 Ω cm², which was decreased by 43.3% compared to PBFO. Simultaneously, the maximum power density of PBLFO-based full cell was improved by 23.3%, reaching 670 mW cm −2 . These findings suggest that Li-doping holds great potential for improving the performance of Fe-based SOFC cathodes, thereby contributing to the advancement of clean and sustainable energy technologies.

B-site high valence cation co-doping boosts fast oxygen kinetics in a cobalt-free perovskite air electrode for reversible solid oxide cells

Chenshuo Yuan,Dongwang Feng,Hui Ye,Pengkai Shan,Lin Ge,Han Chen,Yifeng Zheng,Sheng Cui

Reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) represent a promising technology for efficient energy conversion and storage. However, the performance is often limited by the sluggish oxygen kinetics and poor structural stability of the air electrode. The cobalt-free Bi0.5Sr0.5FeO3−δ (BSF) air electrode exhibits a comparatively desirable performance and is expected to be further optimized. Herein, we propose a B-site co-doping strategy by incorporating high valence Nb5+ and Ta5+ into BSF to synergistically optimize the oxygen transport capacity and surface reactivity. The optimized Bi0.5Sr0.5Fe0.8Nb0.1Ta0.1O3−δ (BSFN0.1T0.1) demonstrates exceptional oxygen ion diffusivity (Dchem = 4.378 × 10−4 cm2 s−1) and exchange kinetics (Kchem = 1.330 × 10−3 cm s−1), leading to a 69% reduction in polarization resistance (from 0.195 to 0.06 Ω cm2) at 750 °C. Notably, the BSFN0.1T0.1 air electrode maintains stable performance under 3–10% CO2 atmosphere, demonstrating superior CO2 tolerance. In fuel cell mode, the single cell delivers a peak power density of 616 mW cm−2 (98% enhancement over BSF) at 750 °C. In electrolysis cell mode, a current density of 1370 mA cm−2 is obtained at 750 °C and 1.5 V in 70% CO2/30% CO atmosphere (116% enhancement over BSF). The synergistic effect of Nb5+ and Ta5+ co-doping arises from their similar ionic radii, stable high valence states, and electronegativity differences, which stabilize the perovskite lattice and facilitate oxygen migration, thereby optimizing oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) activity and electrochemical performance. This work provides a rational design strategy for advanced RSOC air electrodes.

Non-metal doping enhsances oxygen reduction kinetics and CO2 tolerance of SrFeO3-δ perovskite as high-performance cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells

Yuxi Sun,Chuangang Yao,Zhe Zhang,Baixi Xia,Haixia Zhang,Jingyi Ding,Li Zhang,Wenwen Zhang,Xiaoshi Lang,Kedi Cai

The sluggish of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and the susceptibility to CO 2 interactions are major barriers to the widespread application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, a non-metal cation doping strategy was employed to enhance the ORR catalytic activity and CO 2 tolerance of SrFeO 3- δ cathode. SrFe 1- x P x O 3- δ (SFP x , x  = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) materials were synthesized by substituting phosphorus (P) for Fe in SrFeO 3- δ . The doping of P facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies in SrFeO 3- δ , enhancing oxygen adsorption, dissociation, diffusion, and charge transfer processes, leading to a notable increase in ORR catalytic activity. At 800 ℃, the polarization resistance of SFP 0.15 was 0.08 Ω cm 2 , a reduction of 42.86 % compared to undoped SrFeO 3- δ . Additionally, SFP 0.15 achieved a peak power density of 749.36 mW cm 2 , representing a 91.99 % enhancement over SrFeO 3- δ . These findings suggest that non-metal cation doping is an effective approach to boost the performance of SrFeO 3- δ perovskite cathode.
