Infrared ultralow-emissivity fabric has garnered significant interest for applications in infrared stealth and personal thermal management. However, reconciling the competing demands of low emissivity, breathability, and mechanical strength poses a formidable challenge. Here, an air-permeable polymeric metafabric distinguished by a unique non-through-hole structure is presented. This design is achieved through the electroless plating of silver nanoparticles onto commercially available nylon fabric, supplemented by an intermediate layer of hot-processed nylon porous mesh. This metafabric demonstrates an ultralow emissivity of 0.044, an exceptional electrical conductivity of 51 315 S m −1 , an impressive electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 78 dB, and a high tensile strength of 110 MPa. The emissivity, conductivity, and strength of the metafabric are among the highest values reported for infrared low-emissivity fabrics. The metafabric also exhibits an air permeability that conforms to Grade 2 of international standards. The metafabric facilitates personal precision heating across diverse environments through its integrated capabilities of passive radiative and active solar/Joule heating. Additionally, the metafabric displays antibacterial properties, flame retardancy, sweat absorption, quick-drying, and washability performance, thereby significantly enhancing its wearability. This high-performance, multifunctional, infrared ultralow-emissivity polymeric metafabric holds great promise for applications in infrared camouflage, electromagnetic protection, and personal thermal management.

The design and preparation of infrared stealth materials that meet the application in complex environments is urgently demanded in military fields. In this paper, composites with low emissivity and thermal insulation are designed to be used for indoor and outdoor infrared stealth. Thereinto, nanoPE-MXene, yttrium oxide coated hollow glass microspheres (HGMs@Y 2 O 3 ) and polypropylene nonwoven (PPF) were used as low emission, insulation, and antifouling layers, respectively. The sandwich-structured composite reduce the infrared radiation temperature of the 80 °C heat source object to 33.9 °C , and the average infrared emissivity of 3-15 μm is only 0.17. In addition, the infrared stealth performance of the composite is not affected by environmental changes. More importantly, the composite exhibits excellent anti-fouling and ageing resistance performance, which lays the foundation for the practical application of efficient stealth infrared materials.

The irreconcilable camouflage mechanisms of radar and infrared spectroscopy present substantial challenges to integrating multi-physics field cloaking technology. Although aerogels possess both microwave dissipation and thermal insulation, higher infrared emissivity restrict further amelioration in compatible stealth field. Herein, we propose a bilayer configuration comprised of aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogel and infrared shielding meta-surface (ISM). The top ISM with low-pass filtering capabilities is engineered to regulate emissivity while remaining transparent to microwaves. While the bottom quaternary ANF aerogels with radar dissipation and thermal insulation are synthesized by multi-scale design strategy and heterogeneous surface engineering. Through theoretical and experimental optimization, the assembled compatible stealth composite achieves a near-perfect absorption in X-band, while the synergy of low emissivity and thermal insulation facilitates concealment in infrared windows. Specifically, the minimum reflection loss (RL) reaches −32.44 dB, effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) expands to 3.69 GHz (8.71–12.40 GHz), and the integration of effective reflection loss value ( ΔH ) increases to 9.92 dB GHz mm −1 . Additionally, low thermal conductivity (0.0288 W (m K) −1 ) and average infrared emissivity (0.23 in 3–5 µm and 0.25 in 8–14 µm) can reduce infrared radiation energy by 68.1%. This research provides a new thought for the design of multispectral camouflage and demonstrates enormous potential in stealth technologies.

With the fast development of modern intelligent buildings, the demand for a comfortable environment and 'low carbon' technologies, for example, energy-saving buildings, becomes more intense. Thermal insulation coatings as one of the most promising routes to alleviate the energy consumption of buildings attract extensive attention in recent years. In this work, titanium nitride-based organic-inorganic composite films (TiN O/I films) were introduced as the thermal insulation coatings to window glass via blade coating method. Additionally, two different synthesis methods were adopted to prepare the inorganic TiN nanoparticle and its effect on the optical property of the coatings was studied detailedly via the ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV–vis-IR) spectrophotometer and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer characterizations. In addition, the thermal insulation properties of the films were characterized by a system that simulates the natural environment. Various characterizations show that the synthesized TiN O/I films can not only pass through the visible light but also has high reflectance at the mid-infrared range, that is with the functions of solar control and low emission, well satisfying the requirements of the energy-saving coatings for window glass. These results demonstrated the good feasibility of TiN O/I films in thermal insulation coatings, and also provide a direction for the development of more novel thermal insulation materials with large-scale.

Barium aluminate (BAO) ceramics are highly sought after as a kind of high-temperature refractory material due to their exceptional thermal stability in both vacuum and oxygen atmospheres, but their inherent brittleness results in rapid hardening, imposing a negative impact on the overall construction performance. Here, we report a strategy to synthesize flexible BAO nanofibers with a needle-like structure through confined-gelation electrospinning followed by in situ mineralization. The confined gelation among the colloidal particles promotes the formation of precursor nanofibers with high continuity and a large aspect ratio. The resulting flexible BAO nanofiber membranes are bendable, stretchable, and can even be woven, exhibiting a softness (12 mN) that is lower than that of tissue paper (27 mN). Additionally, they are capable of withstanding hundreds to thousands of continuous buckling and bending at 50% deformation without tearing. More importantly, the low emissivity of the flexible BAO nanofiber membranes ensures excellent thermal insulation at 1300 °C while preserving structural integrity and performance stability. In this sense, our strategy can be easily scaled up to produce flexible yet tough oxide ceramic membranes for a wider range of applications.

Traditional passive single-spectrum electromagnetic defense materials are inadequate to defend against complex multispectral electromagnetic threats. Herein, a bilayer heterofilm (BLH film)-based magnetically controllable soft actuator (MCSA), comprising a defense unit and a drive unit, is constructed. The defense unit offers multispectral electromagnetic protection, while the drive unit enables active defense via magnetic actuation. The synergy allows the MCSA to provide intelligent, switchable electromagnetic defense from ultraviolet to terahertz spectra. The BLH film exhibits the lowest infrared emissivity of 0.04 at 14 μm and an average of 0.16 at 8–14 μm, outperforming comparable composites while integrating radiation energy management for enhanced overall protection. It also demonstrates complete blocking of ultraviolet and visible light (320–780 nm), demonstrating zero transmission. Furthermore, the MCSA can be modulated between open and closed states by applying a magnetic field, facilitating a seamless transition between full-band transparency and full-band defense modes. To expand electromagnetic defense applications, a multilayer gradient impedance matching (M-BLH-300) absorber based on the BLH film is fabricated for stealth in microwave bands, achieving a strong reflection loss of −26.7 dB with an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.85 GHz. Notably, the M-BLH-300 absorber retains excellent performance when extended to the terahertz frequency range and further demonstrates its suitability for multispectrum (from ultraviolet to terahertz) defense. In short, this innovative design concept of combining multispectral defense with intelligent switches will guide the development of next-generation advanced electromagnetic defense systems.

Infrared stealth materials are in increasing demand with the development of infrared detection technology. However, most reported materials focus solely on emissivity control or temperature control, resulting in brief and less ideal infrared stealth effect. Herein, a double layer MXene@polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/phase change capsules (PCC) aerogel composite inspired by the skin-fat structure of camel for infrared camouflage was successfully fabricated via a facile freeze-drying followed by spraying method. The PVA/PCC aerogel composite with high latent heat (155.2 J/g) and strong mechanical properties (772.6 kPa), obtained by an in-situ one-step method, is adopted as a temperature control layer, benefiting from the prominent thermal insulation of porous structure and effective heat absorption of PCC. The low emissivity (0.249) of the MXene layer on the surface of aerogel composite makes its radiation temperature recognized by the thermal imager much lower than its actual temperature. By integrating thermal insulation, heat absorption and emissivity reduction strategies, MXene@PVA/PCC aerogel shows no difference with the background in the infrared thermal imager (radiation temperature difference less than 10 °C), achieving superior infrared stealth for medium and low temperature scenarios, and provides novel ideas for developing more high-performance infrared stealth materials.

Fabric-based infrared stealth composite materials have both thermal insulation performance and low emissivity characteristics, and are suitable for fields such as infrared camouflage and thermal management. Therefore, this study innovatively designed a multi-layer structure fabric-based composite material that combines efficient infrared reflection and excellent heat insulation performance. Through the wet spinning and hot-pressing combined process, the functionalized MXene coating was combined with the SiO 2 aerogel microsphere (SiO 2 M)/gel fiber insulation layer, achieving a "surface low emissivity-internal high insulation" synergistic protection mechanism. A continuous and dense MXene low emissivity functional layer was constructed on the fabric surface. By adjusting the concentration of MXene, its emissivity in the 8–14 μm infrared wavelength range was reduced to 0.282, while maintaining excellent conductivity (surface resistance < 10 Ω/sq). The innovative design of the insulation system of SiO 2 M and gel fibers network was achieved. The aerogel microspheres effectively inhibit heat conduction through their nano-porous structure, while the gel fiber network hinders air convection. The combination of the two enhances the material's insulation performance (thermal conductivity = 0.04651 W/(m·K)). At a heating temperature of 70 °C, the thickness of the fabric is 1.263 mm, achieving a temperature difference effect of 11 °C. After adding SiO 2 M, the thermal insulation temperature difference increased by 5.8 °C. In sum, when heated to 70 °C, the radiation temperature only shows 43.4 °C, which means that the intensity of the infrared signal is significantly reduced. Therefore, this multi-layer structure fabric composite material provides some novel new ideas for related applications.

The advancement of infrared-visible compatible stealth materials is pivotal for strengthening national defense security and driving the next frontier in stealth material technologies. Here, we propose a modification strategy for Al/porous SiO 2 (Al/p-SiO 2 ) composite films by incorporating Ag particles to modulate their spectral response, thereby achieving infrared-visible compatible stealth. The most outstanding Al/p-SiO 2 /Ag-20 exhibits excellent thermal stability, with emissivity of 0.27 in the mid-wave infrared (3-5 μm) and 0.19 in the long-wave infrared (8-14 μm) bands. In addition, compared with Al/p-SiO 2 , its visible reflectivity is reduced by 0.35, reaching as low as 0.38 (380-780 nm). To meet diverse application requirements, flexible and patterned Al/p-SiO 2 /Ag-20 composite film was fabricated, exhibiting excellent stealth performance, particularly suitable for wearable devices and fabrics. It is worth mentioning that the fabrication of Al/p-SiO 2 /Ag composite films only requires a simple, low-cost and scalable process, which provides a solid foundation for large-scale application of infrared-visible compatible stealth materials.

Developing a textile capable of achieving infrared stealth under Joule heating conditions is critical for enhancing the operational effectiveness and survivability of combat troops in challenging climates. Here, a novel type of silver nanowires/bacterial cellulose/carbon fibers composite fabric (ABCF) inspired by the multi-layered structure of beetle elytra and the dual-mode thermal management system was designed for infrared stealth at Joule heating via a facile sewing method. The introduction of an inner layer consisting of carbon fibers serves as an effective heater producer, demonstrating excellent Joule heating performance (~ 210 °C at 3 V). The interlayer made from bacterial cellulose aerogel exhibits thermal insulation properties (0.028 W/m·K) and flexibility, functioning as a barrier that mitigates heat transfer through its layer-stacking structure under directional thermal conduction. Meanwhile, the upper layer comprised of silver nanowires provides low emissivity (~ 0.15) and cooperates with the aerogel to achieve infrared stealth. As a result, ABCF achieves both a significant reduction in thermal radiation temperature for targets and long-term infrared stealth stability (~ 55 °C maintained for 8400 s), with experimental feasibility validated through COMSOL simulations. Impressively, ABCF has been effectively utilized in the construction of tents, further highlighting its potential for multifunctional applications in the field of thermal management.

Visible light transparent and low infrared emission materials have great prospects in infrared camouflage, building energy efficiency, passive radiation heating and many other fields, yet their manufacture remains a formidable challenge. inspired by the overlap of branches and fallen leaves in winter, we applied bionic principles to build a conductive network combining AgNWs and MXene on a transparent PET substrate, and developed an optically transparent, infrared-low-emission flexible conductive film. The prepared MA 10/133 film has a visible light transmittance of not less than 71 %, a sheet resistance of 12.03Ω·sq −1 , and average emissivities of 0.37 and 0.18 in two infrared atmospheric windows of 3–5 μm and 8–14 μm, and demonstrates excellent visible transparency and infrared camouflage performance. In addition, in the field of personal thermal management, with superior passive radiant heating performance, MA 10/133 film covered simulated human skin is 4.5°C and 1.5°C higher than those covered by cotton and woolen fabrics. Stable and controllable Joule heating performance can be used as an effective complement to passive radiant heating performance, with a maximum saturation temperature of 74.7°C at a driving voltage of 5 V, which is sufficient to cope with colder outdoor environments. These properties make composite films promising candidates for military thermal camouflage, outdoor life jackets and smart, energy-efficient windows.

The increasing sophistication of modern detection technology requires urgent solutions to the inherent conflict between radar and infrared (IR) stealth mechanisms, further complicated by the difficulties of integrating materials across diverse wavelengths. Here, a synergistic customization of interfacial engineering MXene-integrated aerogel has been developed, featuring a directional regulation of magnetic and dielectric properties. This innovative design incorporates medium-entropy alloy FeCoNi nanoparticles tightly anchored on the surface of a 3D MXene-based skeleton, creating multiple heterogeneous interfaces. The customized strategy leverages the alterations in the magnetic and dielectric components that significantly influence permeability and permittivity to enhance microwave absorption (MA) through magneto-electric synergy. The low emissivity of MXene, combined with the porosity of the aerogel, endows the material with exceptional IR camouflage capabilities. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the FCM aerogel exhibits an excellent absorption bandwidth (EAB = 5.44 GHz) and low-frequency absorption (−27.29 dB at 2.84 GHz), along with reduced radar cross section signals (RCS max = −24.78 dB·m 2 ). Furthermore, the aerogel offers impressive thermal insulation (ΔT = 80 °C), IR emissivity (0.38), and multifunctionality (lightness, compressibility, hydrophobicity, and flame retardancy). This work provides a strategy for developing adaptable radar-IR compatible camouflage design for complex environments.
