Time-dependent dynamic multicolor afterglow of simple LiGa5O8:Eu3+/Tb3+ particles for advanced anticounterfeiting and encryption

Peng Zhang,Wanying Xie,Zhenbin Wang,Zenggang Lin,Xiuxiang Huang,Zhenghua Ju,Weisheng Liu

Long-persistent luminescence (PersL) materials have shown great promise on account of their diverse utilization in anticounterfeiting and encryption. Nevertheless, time-dependent dynamic multicolor afterglow is rarely reported, especially for single-component oxide-based materials. In this work, a series of LiGa5O8:Eu3+/Tb3+ phosphors exhibit time-dependent dynamic multicolor afterglow from blue to red or green over several seconds after ceasing the excitation. Both experimental and computational data confirm that the color evolution results from different energy transfer processes between traps and luminescent centers. The processes are probably controlled by thermally activated exciton diffusion and the electron tunneling effect. This dynamic multicolor afterglow of LiGa5O8 phosphors allows their applications in anticounterfeiting and encryption with high security levels.

Theory-Guided Defect Tuning through Topochemical Reactions for Accelerated Discovery of UVC Persistent Phosphors

Hong Li,Qi Liu,Ju-Ping Ma,Zhao-Yang Feng,Jian-Dang Liu,Qing Zhao,Yoshihiro Kuroiwa,Chikako Moriyoshi,Bang-Jiao Ye,Jun-Ying Zhang,Chang-Kui Duan,Hong-Tao Sun

Long persistent phosphors (LPPs) have attracted enduring attention owing to their wide applications. However, the discovery of LPPs is thus far largely the results of trial and error. Here, theory-guided defect tuning through topochemical reactions is demonstrated for accelerated discovery of emerging LPPs. First-principles calculations are employed to identify the thermodynamic charge-transition levels of different defect states, which help examine whether the candidate structure is a suitable host for afterglow. Rationally tuning the species and concentrations of defects through topochemical reactions is then illustrated, which leads to discovery of Pr 3+ -doped LaPO 4 featuring ultraviolet C afterglow with a lasting time of over 2 h. Such a strategy, in conjunction with advanced characterizations including high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance, suggests a radical-involved afterglow mechanism. Importantly, it is illustrated that this concept can be extended for the discovery of more LPPs. It is suggested that theory-guided defect engineering enabled by topochemical reactions can be used as a powerful tool to accelerate discovery of novel LPPs with much clearer afterglow mechanisms, with implications even for the design of other optoelectronic materials.

Luminescent properties of Mg1.99SnO4:0.01Mn2+ phosphors doped with Zn2+

Ge Gao,Qiang Li,Pengxiao Hao,Xiao Huang,Hongjie Luo

In this work, a series of Zn x Mg 1.99- x SnO 4 :0.01Mn 2+ ( x  = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) green long afterglow phosphors are prepared by high-temperature solid-phase reaction. The photoluminescence and long afterglow performance of host material doped with Zn 2+ are investigated. The results show that the emission peak of Mn 2+ is red-shifted by 5 nm with increasing Zn 2+ concentration. Zn 0.03 Mg 1.96 SnO 4 :0.01Mn 2+ phosphor has the strongest green luminescence intensity with the chromaticity coordinates of (0.085 7, 0.608 3) under 270 nm, and Zn 0.01 Mg 1.98 SnO 4 :0.01Mn 2+ phosphor has superior long afterglow performance with average lifetime of 102.41s. The afterglow decay and thermoluminescence curve of phosphor are used to explain the mechanism of long afterglow luminescence. Meanwhile, the afterglow intensity distribution of each pixel in Zn 0.01 Mg 1.98 SnO 4 :0.01Mn 2+ coating samples is carried out by hyperspectral imaging, and the optimal luminescence intensity and uniformity of the sample are obtained at a phosphor/epoxy mass ratio of 0.002 5. Therefore, Zn 0.01 Mg 1.98 SnO 4 :0.01Mn 2+ can be a potential candidate of novel long afterglow phosphors, and hyperspectral imaging also provides new research approaches for the rational proportioning of luminescent materials.

X-ray-activated long persistent phosphors featuring strong UVC afterglow emissions

Yang Yan-Min,Li Zhi-Yong,Zhang Jun-Ying,Lu Yue,Guo Shao-Qiang,Zhao Qing,Wang Xin,Yong Zi-Jun,Li Hong,Ma Ju-Ping,Kuroiwa Yoshihiro,Moriyoshi Chikako,Hu Li-Li,Zhang Li-Yan,Zheng Li-Rong,Sun Hong-Tao

Phosphors emitting visible and near-infrared persistent luminescence have been explored extensively owing to their unusual properties and commercial interest in their applications such as glow-in-the-dark paints, optical information storage, and in vivo bioimaging. However, no persistent phosphor that features emissions in the ultraviolet C range (200–280 nm) has been known to exist so far. Here, we demonstrate a strategy for creating a new generation of persistent phosphor that exhibits strong ultraviolet C emission with an initial power density over 10 milliwatts per square meter and an afterglow of more than 2 h. Experimental characterizations coupled with first-principles calculations have revealed that structural defects associated with oxygen introduction-induced anion vacancies in fluoride elpasolite can function as electron traps, which capture and store a large number of electrons triggered by X-ray irradiation. Notably, we show that the ultraviolet C afterglow intensity of the yielded phosphor is sufficiently strong for sterilization. Our discovery of this ultraviolet C afterglow opens up new avenues for research on persistent phosphors, and it offers new perspectives on their applications in terms of sterilization, disinfection, drug release, cancer treatment, anti-counterfeiting, and beyond.

Efficient Persistent Luminescence Tuning Using a Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex as Efficient Light Conversion Materials

Dan Zhao,Lijun Song,Linxi Hou

Developing an appropriate method to broaden the color of long persistent luminescence materials has important scientific significance and practical value but remains a great challenge. Herein, we have developed a unique strategy to fine-tune the persistent luminescence using the inclusion complex of rhodamine 6G with (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin as efficient light conversion materials. The emitting color of the novel persistent luminescence material could be tuned from green to orange by changing the concentration of the light conversion agent. Furthermore, afterglow decay measurements showed that the initial afterglow brightness is 9.65 cd/m2, and the initial afterglow brightness gradually decreased as the cyclodextrin inclusion compound coating increased. This design concept introduces a new perspective for broadening the luminescence color of afterglow phosphors, which may open up new opportunities for persistent luminescence materials toward many emerging applications.

Core-tailored carbon dots with ultrabroadband dynamic afterglow for highly secure data encryption and anticounterfeiting

Yatao Pan,Xiangbo Ding,Lin Cai,Zhongran Wei,Shihong Wang,Zhanpeng Liu,Xia Ran,Lijun Guo

Carbon dots (CDs) with ultra-broadband and time-dependent afterglow photoluminescence (PL) are pivotal for next-generation anti-counterfeiting and dynamic information encryption, yet their rational design remains a formidable challenge in terms of spectral-temporal tunability and mechanistic clarity. Herein, we propose a molecular engineering strategy to synthesize CDs@B 2 O 3 via a one-step fusion heating process, using levofloxacin and 1-pyrenylboronic acid as the carbon source precursors within a boric acid matrix. By properly modulating the electronic state distribution between the green-emitting surface states and the red-emitting core states of the CDs, we achieve full coverage of the visible spectrum from green to the near-infrared region. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the broadband afterglow arises from the synergistic delayed fluorescence (DF) of N-heterocyclic surface molecular states and large conjugated domains that activate red core states. Notably, the increased conjugation degree of the carbon core in L,P-CDs@B 2 O 3 results in a higher proportion of red-emitting states and longer afterglow time, enabling a unique color-changing afterglow that transitions from an initial green through yellow and finally to red within 1 s. The time-resolved afterglow characteristics facilitate high-capacity graphical anti-counterfeiting, demonstrating promising applications in graphical security and information storage with spatiotemporal resolution. These findings not only provide an effective approach for designing smart afterglow nanomaterials but also elucidate the structure-emission relationship in carbon-based systems, offering insights into the rational engineering of multi-modal photoluminescent materials.

CaGa2O4:Mn2+ yellow long-lasting phosphorescent material: Preparation and anti-counterfeiting applications

Pengcheng Zhang,Yuanyuan Zhang,Kuo Gao,Diao Zhang,Yu Zhao,Jin Lin,Na Li,Zixuan Shi,Mingxi Zhang,Fengfeng Li

With the growing severity of counterfeiting threats, counterfeiting anti-counterfeiting technologies including fluorescence, QR codes, and query-based labels, rely on static patterns with limited encryption security, leading to inadequate protection and a lack of diversity in anti-counterfeiting strength. Consequently, advancing dynamic anti-counterfeiting systems has become an urgent priority. This study developed a novel dynamic anti-counterfeiting strategy through the synthesis of yellow persistent luminescent CaGa 2 O 4 :Mn 2+ via high-temperature solid-state reaction. In this research, the results demonstrated that at the doping concentration of 0.001 mol Mn, the sample exhibited the best luminescence properties. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses revealed that electron traps responsible for the afterglow process primarily originated from oxygen vacancies, and the underlying afterglow mechanism was elucidated. Finally, CaGa 2 O 4 :Mn 2+ long-lasting phosphorescent ink was synthesized and anti-counterfeiting labels were fabricated via screen printing technology. The material's intrinsic photoresponsive behavior enables time-dependent luminance decay post-UV excitation, establishing dynamic authentication through programmable optical evolution, Which effectively realize dynamic anti-counterfeiting.

Brighten strontium aluminate long-persistence materials via optimizing defect energy level distribution

Jiaren Du,Jiaping Zhang,Tengyue Wang,Pengshang Zhou,Lejia Cao,Qingpo Liu,Hengwei Lin

Afterglow brightness of inorganic persistent luminescent (PersL) materials upon ceasing light excitation represents an important parameter for various glow-in-the-dark applications. Although the emission wavelength of PersL materials is developed to cover over the whole spectral range from ultraviolet to near infrared light , and light emission is sufficiently long-lasting with a fractional number of rare-earth doped PersL materials commercially available, PersL materials with high initial afterglow brightness at room-temperature condition remain rarely reported. Employing trap-controlled temperature dependency of persistent luminescence mechanism, defect energy level distribution, and microwave-assisted solid-state reaction, here a highly bright green-emitting strontium aluminate phosphor is reported. Higher initial afterglow brightness (a photometric luminance of 99.8 cd/m 2 , enhanced 1.7 times than that of the commercial one) is achieved due to the massive aggregation of charge carriers at shallow-trap energy levels. The relation between initial afterglow brightness and trap energy level distribution is investigated. The glowing-in-the-dark composite panel composed of Sr 4 Al 14 O 25 :Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ and Polydimethylsiloxane can light up the safety sign and the map of fire evacuation route. These findings may provide a major step forward to developing high-brightness PersL materials and are expected to further benefit a wide range of PersL material systems for practical glow-in-the-dark applications.

Trap induction and regulation to enhance long persistent luminescence for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting

Teng Zhang,Ruchun Zhao,Heyi Yang,Fangyi Zhao,Qinan Mao,Meijiao Liu,Jiasong Zhong

The security level of traditional long persistent luminescence (LPL) phosphor with a single adjustable decay time is increasingly insufficient to meet the demands of a rapidly advancing society, resulting in significant losses for individuals and corporations. Therefore, exploring a phosphor with a two-model of adjustable decay time and afterglow color is meaningful for advanced information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. Here, we propose a simple and efficient strategy to regulate the trap type and concentration in high defect tolerance matrix CaGa 4 O 7 (CGO), achieving tunable emission color, afterglow color and decay time. At first, we introduce the rare earth ions Tb 3+ to generate the new defects, and then substitute Ca 2+ with Zn 2+ in CGO:Tb 3+ (CZGO:Tb 3+ ) phosphors to increase the inherent defects concentration, thereby greatly increasing the number of band electrons trapped by the defects and improving their LPL performance. Owing to the lattice distortion, its luminescence performance is increased by 6.09 times. It is worth noting that CZGO:Tb 3+ phosphor has a variety of emission modes over time, so it has great potential in information anti-counterfeiting and encryption applications.

Dual-emission-center strategy in Ca3Ga4O9:Er3+/Sm3+ enables color-tunable afterglow for multimodal luminescent encryption materials

Yunfei Wang,Sixia Li,Yuzhu Yang,Peng Zhang,Wenfei Qin,Sai Zhou,Xuan Miao,Zenggang Lin,Weisheng Liu

Materials exhibiting long-persistent luminescence (LPL) in the visible spectrum hold pivotal importance for anti-counterfeiting and encryption. Nevertheless, conventional LPL materials generally possess a fixed afterglow color. This constraint makes it imperative to develop multimodal luminescent systems featuring spectrally tunable afterglow. Herein, the Er3+/Sm3+ co-doped Ca3Ga4O9 phosphors achieve multicolor photoluminescence (PL), upconversion luminescence (UCL), and color-tunable LPL by responding to multiple excitations modes ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared radiation (NIR). Spectral analysis reveals a green-to-orange multicolor afterglow by varying the relative concentrations of Er3+ and Sm3+ ions. To unravel the mechanism of multicolor afterglow, afterglow spectra and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra are systematically employed to probe the trap distribution mediated by Er3+ and Sm3+ co-doping. Finally, their prospective application in optical anti-counterfeiting and information encryption is also systematically investigated based on the color-tunable LPL. This successful integration of multicolor, multimodal luminescence with color-tunable afterglow in a single host provides a novel platform for anti-counterfeiting and encryption, significantly expanding the visual diversity of displayable information.

Tunable wavelength of fluorescence and afterglow in super-bright carbon dot-based composite materials

Yulong Cui,Wenxuan Sun,Yao Dong,Yingnan Jiang,Jie Zhang,Tong Zhao,Jing Zhang,Yankai Wang,Meiling Sun,Guangchao Yin

The afterglow material based on carbon dots (CDs), with boric acid (BA) serving as the matrix, demonstrates outstanding structural rigidity. The covalent bond structure is particularly advantageous for stabilizing the triplet states of CDs, thus shielding the triplet excitons from quenching. Urea, on the other hand, harbors numerous CO and –NH2 functional groups, fostering the creation of hydrogen bond structures with CDs. This impedes the non-radiative recombination of CDs, thereby enhancing the production of afterglow. Here, we blend two substrate materials with distinct structural characteristics, utilizing their combined effect on restricting CDs. By employing this method, we have successfully synthesized afterglow materials with an exceptional absolute quantum yield (QY) of 61.22% and an afterglow delay time surpassing 5 s. Urea is employed to modulate the size and graphitization degree of CDs, thereby adjusting the emission wavelength in both solid state fluorescence (S-FL) and afterglow within composite materials. Furthermore, by adjusting the mixed ratio of BA and urea, thus altering their respective proportions in interacting with CDs, the brightness of S-FL and the delay time of afterglow are adjusted.

Enabling Visualized Time-Resolved Dynamic Discoloring Afterglow from Carbon Dots by Engineering Luminescent Centers and Trap-States for Security Applications

Yixuan Xu,Zihan Cheng,Henggang Wang,Jun Jiang,Zuxu Zhou,Linger Feng,Xiaomeng Wang,Hengwei Lin,Kai Jiang

Luminescent materials with time-resolved dynamic discoloring afterglow (TDDA) hold significant potential for applications in anti-counterfeiting and data encryption. However, the afterglows coming from organic systems are usually unidentifiable due to their shorter durations (less than 10 s). Achievement of long-lasting and visually discernible TDDA remains highly desirable but challenging. In this work, the TDDA duration is successfully extended from less than 10 s to minutes by engineering the luminescent centers of carbon dots (CDs) and introducing deep trap-states in a composite of CDs and carbon nitrides (CNs) (named Y-CDs@CN). It is confirmed that the regulation of luminescent centers in CDs containing both C═N and C═O bonds is responsible for the color changes during TDDA from yellow to green. Moreover, the generation of deep trap states is found to be significant for prolonging the afterglow duration to minutes level through converting room temperature phosphorescence into long persistent luminescence, thus making the entire dynamic discoloring process being easily recognized to naked eyes. Furthermore, the afterglow of Y-CDs@CN can also be excited by blue light and even using white light of a cell phone. To harness these characteristics, potential applications of Y-CDs@CN for portable anti-counterfeiting and multidimensional information encryption are primarily investigated.
