In light of the depletion of petrochemical resources and increase in environmental pollution, there has been a significant focus on utilizing natural biomass, specifically lignin, to develop sustainable and functional materials . This research presents the development of a lignin-based polyurethane (DLPU) with photothermal-responsiveness by incorporating lignin and oxime-carbamate bonds into polyurethane network. The abundant hydrogen bonds between lignin and the polyurethane matrix, along with its cross-linked structure, contribute to DLPU's excellent mechanical strength (30.2 MPa) and toughness (118.7 MJ·m −3 ). Moreover, the excellent photothermal conversion ability of DLPU (54.4 %) activates dynamic reversible behavior of oxime-carbamate bonds and hydrogen bonds, thereby endowing DLPU with exceptional self-healing performance. After 15 min of near-infrared irradiation, DLPU achieves self-healing efficiencies of 96.0 % for tensile strength and 96.3 % for elongation at break. Additionally, DLPU exhibits photocontrolled solid-state plasticity as well as an excellent phototriggered shape-memory effect (70 s), with shape fixity and recovery ratios reaching 98.8 % and 95.3 %, respectively. By exploiting the spatial controllability and photothermal-responsiveness of DLPU, we demonstrate multi-dimensional responsive materials with self-healing and shape-shifting properties. This work not only promotes the development of multi-functional polyurethanes but also provides a pathway for the high-value utilization of lignin.

In this study, a polydopamine (PDA)-modified MXene-PNIPAM (pMP) hydrogel is prepared using a soap-free emulsion polymerization method, which shows enhanced anti-oxidative, photo-thermal, and tribological properties. The introduction of PDA not only inhibits the oxidation of MXene but also enhances the photo-thermal conversion efficiency of the hydrogel. Even after 50 days, it can still maintain good photo-thermal conversion performance. Moreover, compared with PNIPAM hydrogel, the friction coefficient (COF) and wear volume of pMP hydrogel as lubricant were reduced by 33% and 85%, respectively. Interestingly, the control of COF with excellent reversibility and durability is achieved using pMP hydrogel modulated by near-infrared light. The pMP composite hydrogel exhibits promising prospects in the fields of intelligent robots and biomedical devices.

This study presents an innovative approach to membrane fabrication by integrating electrospinning with surface modification techniques to develop a novel dual-layer protective membrane system. The key innovation lies in the incorporation of photothermally responsive nanocomposites, enabling multifunctional membrane performance. The primary layer is a PVDF-PNIPAAm thermoresponsive matrix synthesized by radical polymerization, integrated with BN@PDA-Ag nanosheets. This design combines Ag nanoparticles’ photothermal conversion and BN’s thermal conductivity to regulate pore size via PNIPAAm chain conformational changes induced by temperature. The secondary layer, comprising CS@CNT and PVDF, significantly enhances membrane hydrophilicity and antifouling properties through chitosan’s hydrophilic groups and chelating capabilities. The membrane demonstrates self-cleaning, adaptive filtration, antifouling and high flux, representing a significant advancement in smart membrane technology for water treatment applications.

Epoxy adhesives have found extensive application in the fields of aerospace, automotive, and electronics industries due to their excellent mechanical properties, bond strength, and thermal stability. However, the cured epoxy adhesive forms three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked networks, which makes debonding challenging and cannot meet the requirements of temporary positioning, recycling, and reuse of precision parts particularly in the electronic devices area. The incorporation of dynamic networks into adhesives is an effective approach to achieving debonding. In this study, a series of anthracene-modified debonding epoxy adhesives were successfully synthesized using anthracene-9-ylmethyl 3-mercaptopropanoate (ANSH) and N,N-diglycidyl-4-glycidyloxyaniline (AFG-90H) by epoxy–thiol “click reaction” under Et3N conditions. The adhesive undergoes a synergistic curing process involving a [4π + 4π] cycloaddition reaction and epoxy self-curing under light and heat conditions (365 nm UV-light irradiation and 65 °C), resulting in optimal bonding with an excellent shear strength of 2.01 ± 0.14 MPa. Moreover, it is capable of breaking the covalent bonds of the anthracene dimers at milder heat stimulation (120 °C), with a debonding rate of up to 87%. The findings offer a promising avenue for the development of a debonding epoxy adhesive.

Although several separation membranes for the purification of dye-containing oily wastewater have been reported, achieving continuous one-step separation and photodegradation of complex oil/water effluents containing dyes is still a significant challenge. In previous studies, the purification of oil/water mixtures has typically involved a two-step process involving the initial separation of oil/water mixtures followed by the subsequent photodegradation of organic dyes. This is because one-step purification requires the membrane to concurrently possess an excellent separation efficiency and photodegradation ability to ensure efficient degradation of dyes as they rapidly pass through the separation membrane. Herein, we propose a photothermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-MXene/polyacrylonitrile-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) nanofibrous hydrogel membrane (PNIPAm-MXene/PAN-PNIPAm, PMPP membrane). The PMPP membrane is composed of a PNIPAm-MXene hydrogel bonded to the surface of a PAN-PNIPAm nanofibrous membrane. The PNIPAm-MXene hydrogel layer imparts excellent photothermally responsive wettability, photodegradation activity, and antifouling properties to the membrane. The PAN-PNIPAm nanofibrous membrane provides a porous structure that ensures the highly efficient separation of complex oil/water mixtures. The PMPP membrane achieves simultaneous one-step separation and photodegradation of complex oil/water effluents under light irradiation, particularly in the case of multiphase heavy oil/water/light oil mixtures containing both oily and water-soluble organic dyes and oil–water emulsions. The degradation and separation efficiencies of the PMPP membrane exceed 99.5%. Even after 20 cycles, the degradation rates of Sudan IV and methyl blue (MB) remain above 95.7 and 99.9%, respectively.

Oil–water separation has attracted considerable concern for the increasing discharge of industrial oily wastewater and frequency of oil spill accidents. Conventional oil–water separation methods are not effective in treating emulsified oil. In this study, photothermal-responsive polyurethane (PU)/poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PMMA-b-PNIPAM) fibrous membranes (denoted as PTFMs) with core-shell structure are fabricated. The as-prepared membranes exhibited photothermal-modulable water wettability. Significantly, the wettability and permeation flux can be tuned by light illumination during the oil–water separation process because of the incorporation of light-responsive Ag nanoparticles and thermal-responsive copolymers. In addition, the as-prepared membrane exhibited recyclability even for forty separation cycles. It was concluded that the photothermal-responsive composite fibrous membranes provide great potential for the development of remotely operated water treatment devices.

Traditional wound closure methods often present several issues, including additional puncture wounds, adverse effects from anesthesia, and noticeable scarring. Inspired by embryonic wound healing, a Janus hydrogel (PG/Au-Asp@PCM) is designed to manipulate non-invasive wound closure by photothermal-responsive self-contraction of PG/Au-Asp@PCM, which is attributed to the shape memory behavior of PG/Au-Asp@PCM under near-infrared (NIR). Wherein, gelatin acts as a thermally reversible “switch” and polyacrylamide creates stable and cross-linked “net-points”. The elongated PG/Au-Asp@PCM can be temporarily fixed at 4 °C, and subsequently self-contracts upon NIR irradiation, generating a recovery force of 10 kPa, adequate for the closure of wound spontaneously. The Janus hydrogel also incorporates a drug carrier loaded with phase change material (PCM) and aspirin. The PCM absorbs heat during its phase transition above 42 °C, offering the photothermal-responsive release of aspirin on-demand; additionally, it also reduces the risk of skin burn during NIR exposure. Animal studies confirm the effectiveness of PG/Au-Asp@PCM in wound closure. Moreover, wounds treated with PG/Au-Asp@PCM exhibit reduced inflammation, increased thickness of epidermal and dermal layers, and a smoother appearance without scarring. These findings reinforce the feasibility of the photothermal strategy utilizing PG/Au-Asp@PCM for non-invasive wound closure, resulting in enhanced cosmetic appearance and improved wound healing outcomes.

Graphical The Alg/PDA/ZnO solution was used to form photothermal responsive antibacterial fibers under Zn2+ displacement by a wet spinning process. Traditional medical materials, such as gauze are limited in their application for complex wound healing due to insufficient antibacterial properties, thereby emphasizing the need to develop fiber materials with intelligent, controllable antibacterial functions. In this work, zinc oxide (ZnO) and polydopamine (PDA) were synthesized in situ within sodium alginate (Alg) solutions. The solutions mixed in specific proportions were used as a spinning solution to produce composite fibers with photothermal response characteristics, efficient and prolonged antibacterial activity, and good biocompatibility through a wet spinning process. Benefit from the in situ synthesis of ZnO and the Schiff base reaction between zinc alginate (Alg-Zn) and PDA, the tensile strength of the composite fibers reached up to 26.5 ± 2 MPa. The introduction of PDA endowed the composite fibers with excellent photothermal properties, allowing them to rapidly heat to 70 °C and remain stable under light irradiation. Antibacterial tests against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed maximum inhibition zones of 7 mm, 10 mm, and 4 mm, respectively, primarily attributable to the synergistic antibacterial effects among Alg-Zn, PDA, and ZnO. The excellent photothermal response and antibacterial properties lay a solid foundation for the application of Alg-Zn/PDA/ZnO composite fibers in medical materials.

The fabrication of superhydrophobicity on metallic substrates for corrosion and icing prevention requires surface modification and designing micro/nanostructures. However, surface modification using low-energy materials is potentially harmful to environments and human health, expensive, and degraded at high temperatures and solvents. Hence, a stable and self-healing superhydrophobic photothermal-responsive coating without modification was fabricated by reproducible and rapid electrodeposition to protect material in various environments. The water contact angle (WCA) of CeO 2 smooth surface calculated by density functional theory exceeded the intrinsic wetting threshold, suggesting the potential for superhydrophobicity without surface modification. The as-prepared coating with a WCA of 163.4° exhibited excellent self-healing, self-cleaning, and antifouling properties. Moreover, the coating maintained superhydrophobicity under atmospheric environment (20 weeks), low/high temperatures (−20 ∼ 200 °C), and acid/base solutions (pH = 1 ∼ 14). Its impedance modulus at the lowest frequency is increased by more than 32 times that of the substrate due to the barrier effect of the air film and the coating. Meanwhile, the time of ice nucleation and ice melting on the coating were delayed by 43.45 s and accelerated by 79 s, respectively, attributed to its excellent superhydrophobicity and photothermal conversion capability. The superhydrophobic coating with excellent properties has a promising application in material protection fields.

The research on intelligent corrosion inhibition and repair protective coatings is currently underway, with a particular focus on the intricate microstructure failure process of these coatings due to the inherent complexity of their fillers (functionality, interfacial compatibility, etc.). Herein, we developed corrosion inhibition nanocontainers with enhanced photothermal and pH-responsive properties. The incorporation of chitosan facilitated the acidic environment responsiveness of the nanocontainers, while MoS 2 nanocontainers enabled light-triggered release. The electrochemical results show that after 60 days, the impedance modulus of epoxy coating with 1 % nanocontainers is 4.35 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 , while that of pure epoxy coating is 2.09 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 . And it can achieve 300 h of salt spray resistance. In addition, the mechanical properties show that the adhesion and tensile properties of the coating are improved, and the saturated water absorption of the coating is decreased. In addition, the evolution of its electrochemical structure was comprehensively studied using relaxation time analysis. The research results indicate that the coating exhibits multiple electrochemical processes, and the controlled release and formation of a protective layer effectively hinder the formation of corrosion products and reduce internal electrochemical reactions. This study provides a potential method for studying the structural evolution of composite coatings.

There is significant interest in developing high-performance adsorbents that can harvest water from atmospheric air powered by sunlight. However, The inherent hydrophobicity of porous carbon limits water harvesting capacity. Herein, we report a new class of activated porous carbons (PAK-21) with high water adsorption capacity at moderate to high humidity by solid-phase polymerization of terephthalaldehyde and 2,6-diaminopurine in the presence of KOH under an argon atmosphere at 150 °C for 2 h, and then activated at a high temperature of 700 °C for 1 h. The water harvesting performance surpasses the most common MOFs and porous carbon adsorbents, which benefit from rich surface heterogeneity and highly porous structure. PAK-21 also exhibits fast solar-driven desorption kinetics, ascribing to rapid photothermal responsiveness, hierarchical porosity, and suitable hydrophilicity. Besides, twenty-one adsorption-desorption cycles have been performed to demonstrate its easy regeneration and long-term cyclability. This may pave a new way to modulate the surface functionality and microporous/mesoporous engineering of carbon adsorbents for high-performance solar-driven AWH.

The treatment of diabetic wounds remains a significant challenge in the medical field. In this study, we present a novel approach using photothermally responsive graphene hybrid dry powders for the treatment of diabetic wounds. These powders, derived from polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), exhibit rapid water absorption at the interface, leading to the in situ formation of physically crosslinked hydrogels due to interactions between polymers. Furthermore, by incorporating graphene into the PAA/PEI powder mixture, we establish a multifunctional platform with capabilities such as photothermal antibacterial effects and drug release. Given the outstanding performance of this hybrid material, we demonstrate its potential in wound healing by incorporating the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitor Etanercept into the PAA/PEI powder. This intervention resulted in a significant improvement in the wound healing process in diabetic rats, as evidenced by the downregulation of inflammatory factors, promotion of collagen deposition, and enhanced vascularization. These remarkable attributes underscore the enormous potential value of the presented hydrogel patches in the field of biomedicine.
