Organic fluorine compounds are acute carcinogenic and mutagenic to humans. Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) treatment is an innovative technology in the field of the removal of fluorine compounds, and thus current research focused on improving stability and catalytic ability of photoanode. In this study, it has been synthesized a rGO/BiOI photocathode for the efficient degradation of 4-Fluoroaniline (4-FA). The physical characterization and photoelectrochemical properties of the photocathode was determined. The results indicate that the PEC treatment with the rGO/BiOI photocathode was more efficient compared with individual processes. During the optimization experiments, the PEC treatment achieved 99.58 % and 72.12 % of 4-FA degradation and defluorination within 1 h. Cyclic stability experiments show that rGO/BiOI photocathode was efficient and stable, which reached 96.91 % and 67.64 % of 4-FA degradation and defluorination after five cycles. Mechanism analysis indicates that the PEC process was based on an electrochemical reaction and photo-induced processes. The degradation product of 4-FA was mainly 2,4-di-t-butylphenol, and trapping experiments indicates that h + is the primary oxidizing species. Therefore, PEC treatment with rGO/BiOI photocathode is a competitive green approach to remove fluorine compounds pollutants and brings new insights into development of PEC treatment.

Photoelectrocatalysis has attracted significant attention for water splitting and contaminant degradation. However, the lifetime of photoelectrocatalysis devices is hampered by the severe instability and photocorrosion of the photo-active nanomaterial on the photoelectrode, which is a key limitation to realizing industrialization. Typically, the conventional protection strategy of photoelectrodes usually suffers from the trade-off between the photoelectrocatalytic activity and stability. Inspired by biological cell membrane with water channels, here a highly permeable and ultrathin silica coating with ultrasmall straight nanochannels is in situ grown that stabilizes the photoelectrode. These ultrasmall channels boost photoelectrocatalysis by accelerating water transport and reducing the reaction energy within the confined nanochannels. Specifically, the ultrathin coating imparts significant mechanical and structural stability to the photo-active nanomaterial, thereby preventing its detachment, dissolution, and crystal damage without compromising performance. As a result, the protected photoelectrode exhibits enhanced water splitting activity and excellent stability over 120 h, whereas the photocurrent of the unprotected photoelectrode degrades rapidly. Meanwhile, the coated photoelectrode also exhibits superior photoelectrocatalytic degradation efficiency (>97%), even after the 10th cycle. This strategy is facile and universal and can be extended to construct other stable and high-performance electrodes for promoting photoelectrocatalysis in practical applications.

A promising technology was proposed for the remediation of Cu and phenanthrene (PHE) co-contaminated soil. Firstly, Cu and PHE were simultaneously removed from soil using an extraction agent containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Tween 80 (TW80). Specifically, Cu was mobilized by the chelation of EDTA while PHE was desorpted from soil by TW80 micelles. At 20 mL g − 1 of liquid to soil ratio, 10 g L − 1 TW80 and 1 mM EDTA, 73.5% Cu and 68.1% PHE were removed by soil washing. The extraction agent was then recovered from effluent by photoelectro-persulfate (PE/PS) process after soil washing. Under the conditions of 10 mM PS, 4 mA cm − 2 current density, natural pH of 3.5 and 150 min treatment, 83.6% Cu was reduced to elemental copper but only 36.8% EDTA was recovered, while 99.6% PHE was eliminated and 94.0% TW80 was recovered. The result of quenching experiments indicated PHE was predominantly oxidized by sulfate radical, though hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen were also identified by electron paramagnetic resonance technique. The recovered extracting agent could be reused for further three washing cycles. The results demonstrated that soil washing followed by PE/PS process could be a cost-effective remediation technology for heavy metal and organic co-contaminated soil.

In this work, efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) removal of atrazine, one of the most widely used chemical herbicides in the world, was obtained by adjusting the bias potential applied on the photo-anode, and the optimal atrazine removal efficiency reached 96.8% at the potential of 0.2 V vs . SCE in 2 h with the reaction rate constant of 1.72 h −1 . The results indicated at the optimal potential, the separation efficiency of photo-generated holes and electrons was the highest with the lowest electron transfer resistance. Mechanism investigation revealed that superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals and holes all contributed to atrazine degradation, and the bias potential on the photo-anode could influence atrazine removal efficiency by changing the generation amount and distribution of the reactive oxygen species (ROS). It was presumed the nucleophilicity of superoxide radical played an important role in atrazine dechlorination , leading to the enhanced removal efficiency. However, the bias potential did not show obvious influence on the degradation intermediates of atrazine in the PEC system compared with that in photocatalytic oxidation , since it was actually an electro-assisted photocatalytic process in the potential range investigated. The work will provide fundamental basis for establishing efficient PEC system for pollutant remediation experimentally and theoretically.

With the rapid development of modern water treatment technologies, public perception of drinking water has shifted from simply ‘having water to drink’ to ‘drinking healthy water’. Despite the ability of modern water treatment plants to remove most pollutants, the presence of excess disinfection by-products (DBPs) in tap water is a major issue. Boiling is amongst of the oldest methods for purifying drinking water, and > 90 % of Chinese households still consume boiled water. This study proposes an enhanced photoelectrochemical–thermal synchronised technology (E-UV/BO) to address the issue of excess DBPs in tap water. The study shows that boiling can effectively remove volatile DBPs, such as trihalomethanes, with removal rates reaching 60 %–80 %, but the removal of haloacetic acids and aromatic DBPs was < 10 %. In contrast, the E-UV/BO technology achieves a removal efficiency of > 70 % for all DBPs, even with complete elimination. This enhancement in the removal efficiency can be attributed to the improved catalyst performance, reduced solution resistance, accelerated molecular motion and decreased intermolecular forces. FT-ICR MS confirmed that the E-UV/BO significantly simplified the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter and effectively removed halogenated and aromatic DBP precursors. For a family of four consuming 10 L of water per day, the daily power consumption of this small-scale device based on E-UV/BO is only 0.5–0.8 kWh. This technology not only offers a new approach to improving the quality of drinking water but also reduces the treatment burden on upstream water treatment plants, contributing to global efforts to ensure drinking water safety.

High surface states induced photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity and stability issue is the major performance bottleneck for nanostructured WO 3 photoanode. Here we report that amorphous TiO 2 ( α -TiO 2 ) be used as passivator to modify the surface states of WO 3 nanoflakes film for improving its PEC water oxidation performance. In comparison with bare WO 3 film, the α -TiO 2 -coupled WO 3 ( α -TiO 2 /WO 3 ) film is of higher PEC water oxidation activity and stability. The photocurrent on α -TiO 2 /WO 3 film photoanode is improved by 2 times that reached 1.4 mA/cm 2 in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 solution at 0.8 V ( vs. SCE). After α -TiO 2 coupling, the UV–vis absorption edge and intensity of WO 3 film do not change obviously, but the formation and oxidation kinetics of H 2 O 2 on WO 3 photoanode are modified. The density functional theory calculations indicate the monoclinic WO 3 (002) has a surface energy of 1.17 J/m 2 , whereas the α -TiO 2 /WO 3 (002) with a much lower surface energy of 0.3 J/m 2 . Additionally, the length of Ti O bond of α -TiO 2 is changed from the initial 1.929 Å to a shorter length of 1.886 Å and a longer length of 2.290 Å in α -TiO 2 /WO 3 (002) through the O 2- -W 6+ bonding effect at α -TiO 2 /WO 3 interface. Therefore, the enhanced PEC water oxidation performance on α -TiO 2 /WO 3 film can be attributed to that α -TiO 2 passivates the surface states of WO 3 nanoflakes film, and the formation of H 2 O 2 from the photoexcited-electrons/dissolved-oxygen route is depressed and the PEC oxidation of H 2 O 2 is accelerated.

Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) and electroenzymatic (EEC) process are two important techniques for degradation of refractory organic compounds. In this work, we coupled PEC and EEC (PEC-EEC) to develop a novel system for efficient removal of chloramphenicol (CAP) driven by visible light. This coupling system was constructed by a CdS/WO 3 /FTO photoanode and a hemin-graphene immobilized cathode. The photoanode was fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly of CdS quantum dots on WO 3 /FTO to provide high visible light activity. In order to achieve the EEC process, graphite cathode was modified with hemin-graphene composite, in which hemin served as the mimic enzyme. When CdS/WO 3 /FTO anode was irradiated under visible light, photogenerated holes participated in the formation of hydroxyl radicals while photogenerated electrons were driven by bias potential to the cathode for the reduction of oxygen into hydrogen peroxide. Thus, organic pollutant could be degraded by the oxidation reactions either with the hydroxyl radicals or the hydrogen peroxide under the catalysis of hemin. The visible light-driven PEC-EEC system was applied to the removal of CAP. The intermediates formed during the degradation process were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and a degradation pathway for CAP in such a PEC-EEC system was proposed.

Exploiting highly efficient oxygen-evolving electrocatalysts is crucial for hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis. Here, a hierarchical structure of boron-doped (Ni,Fe)OOH grown on Ni 3 N nanosheets supported on nickel foam [denoted as B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF] is fabricated. Benefiting from the formation of abundant active sites and the reduced free energy barrier of the rate-determining step caused by B doping, the obtained B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF exhibits extraordinary electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction, requiring overpotentials of only 283 mV and 309 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline pure water and seawater media, respectively, as well as superior stability. When driven by a commercial Si solar cell, the electrolyzer using B-(Ni,Fe)OOH/Ni 3 N/NF as the anode and a previously reported Ru/(Fe,Ni)(OH) 2 /NF as the cathode can achieve a high current of over 1000 mA in alkaline seawater media. This shows the great potential in applying a photovoltaic-driven electrolyzer toward large-scale hydrogen production in seawater electrolysis.

Recently, employing photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) strategy to eliminate environmental impact and hazards of hard-to-handle antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX) has been given increasing attention. Herein, a “honeycomb” heterostructured α-MnO 2 nanowire/NiCo 2 O 4 hollow nanocages PEC catalyst is fabricated by using a continuous assembly process as following: (1) construction of α-MnO 2 nanowire carrier, (2) surface adhesion of ZIF-67, and (3) Co/Ni ion exchange. The as-synthesized Ti/α-MnO₂@NiCo₂O₄ demonstrated excellent PEC performance for degrading SMX, as compared with that of α-MnO 2 , α-MnO 2 @ZIF-67. Especially, the optimized Ti/α-MnO₂@NiCo₂O₄-30 showed removal rate of 98.2 % for SMX in 30 min, outstanding durability (~8000 s), and tolerable reusability (the removal rate can still reach 76.5 % for SMX after five cycles). The improvement of PEC performance for Ti/α-MnO₂@NiCo₂O₄ can be attributed to that the unique porous structure formed numerous electrochemically active sites, and the α-MnO₂ nanowire as common channel for charge transfer promoted the migration of induced carriers. The DFT calculation indicated that a II-scheme heterojunction can be formed over the α-MnO 2 @NiCo 2 O 4 composite, which can effectively inhibit the recombination of induced carriers, facilitate the degradation process. This work provides a valuable approach for constructing nanohybrids with targeted functionalities, opening new possibilities for the application of nanomaterials in wastewater treatment.

Abstract Efficient and long-term photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen liberation from hydrazine hydrate was achieved using CdS nanorod arrays (CdS NRs) as the photoelectrode. Under light irradiation, the CdS photoelectrode exhibited high efficiency and stability for the anodic oxidation of N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O with high selectivity for hydrogen production at the counter cathode. The yield and Faradic efficiencies (FE) of hydrogen from N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O solution under mild conditions were determined to be 658 μmol/cm 2 and 90%, respectively, after 5 h of operation. The photocurrent density of the CdS electrode in electrolyte with N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O reached 7.6 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V versus RHE, five times higher than that in N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O free electrolyte. And the persistence of CdS electrodes in electrolytes with N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O was more than 100 h, while in N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O free electrolytes, it was less than 100 s. An obvious cathodic shift of the photocurrent onset potential of about 300 mV was also observed. Furthermore, the kinetics of PEC oxidation of N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O were further tested. In addition, it is expected that this work may provide a strategy to stabilize other unstable photoelectrodes for a wide range of applications and supply a way to produce hydrogen by photoelectrochemical decomposition of N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O. Among various advanced oxidation processes, photo-Fenton like catalysis, which couples solar energy with Fenton-like catalysis to generate highly reactive species for wastewater decontamination, has attracted broad interests. However, photo-Fenton catalysts usually suffer from poor pH adaptability, metal leaching and photogenerated charge recombination. Herein, a novel defect-enriched Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 /C 3 N 4 (BTO/CN) heterojunction is prepared via ball milling-thermal treatment method and used as a durable photo-Fenton like catalyst to degrade phenol in water. The BTO/CN heterojunction shows an excellent optical absorption capacity, and a superior e - -h + separation efficiency. With the addition of PMS, a micro-photo-electrolysis reactor can be formed in the BTO/CN, rendering it high photocatalytic activity, excellent tolerance to environmental condition and exceptional stability. The BTO/CN micro-photo-electrolysis reactor exhibits superior performance in phenol removal and excellent tolerance towards salt ions. Non-radical pathway and OH oxidation are demonstrated to contribute to phenol degradation in the BTO/CN heterojunction photo-Fenton-like system. The PMS can simultaneously boost the interfacial charge transmission from BTO to CN forming internal BTO photoanode and CN photocathode, leading to sustainable photocatalytic performance without secondary pollution. This work successfully demonstrates a feasible strategy to develop solar energy assisted Fenton-like catalyst for efficient water decontamination, which holds a great promise towards practical photo-Fenton water decontamination.

In order to meet the requirements of atomic-level smoothness and non-damaging wafer surface with a high material removal rate (MRR) of silicon carbide (SiC), a new method assisted by photoelectron-Fenton reaction was studied to assist in chemical mechanical polishing. The coupling effects of ultraviolet light, electric field, and Fenton reaction in improving the slurry oxidation performance and the oxidation ability on the 4H-SiC wafer surface has been verified by measuring the oxidation-reduction potential, using probe detection methods, and conducting electrochemical experiments. Through immersion oxidation experiments, the oxidation mechanisms of SiC wafers were analyzed in depth using scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests. The results showed that the photoelectro-Fenton reaction greatly enhanced the oxidation ability of the slurry, which improved the efficiency of oxide layer generation on the wafer surface. The high MRR of 102.4 nm h−1 and the low surface roughness (Ra) of 0.57 nm can be obtained after polishing under the condition of pH = 3, and the polishing and synergistic mechanism of 4H-SiC in the photoelectron-Fenton reaction solution was proposed.
